The Denton Police had lost four days by the time they found out 21-year-old Virginia Carpenter was missing. But when they did, searches were organized quickly, and information was dispatched to law enforcement nationwide. When Texas Ranger Lewis C. Rigler entered the case, one of his immediate concerns was interviewing a handful of folks, including Virginia's suitor, Kenny. Although his one eyebrow remained raised at the thought of this young man's potential motives, Ranger Rigler could find nothing implicating him. Upon the discovery that the Carpenter Family was acquainted with three of the victims of a series of depraved and notorious crimes in Virginia's hometown of Texarkana, the lawman couldn't help but wonder if the infamous Phantom Killer also had a hand in her disappearance. You can support Gone Cold – Texas True Crime and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X. Between February and May 1946, three people were brutally attacked and five were murdered in Texarkana by a man dubbed the Phantom Killer. Texarkana straddles Texas and Arkansas and had a population of about 27,000 at the time of the murders. The murders have never been solved, though many believe to know who's responsible for the crimes. James “Jimmy” Hollis and Mary Jeanne Larey were attacked in February 1946 but luckily survived. Richard Griffin and Polly Ann Moore were not so lucky when they were killed just three weeks later in March. Paul Martin and Betty Jo Booker were the second double murder three weeks later in April. Virgil Starks was killed and his wife Katie was shot twice at the beginning of May 1946. Then the attacks ended as quickly as they began. During this week's Segment 1, Comfy Horror Movie Review we're talking about the man who helped to write for the movie Sudden Impact - Charles Pierce - and his classic 1976 pseudo-docu-horror drama called The Town that Dreaded Sundown. Starring the legendary Ben Johnson, The Town that Dreaded Sundown is a first for the DFM pod - we're talking a real killer with real murders - the Texarkana Moonlight Murders took place in post WWII Texarkana Arkansas/Texas. The Phantom Killer may be the 2nd or 3rd most popular serial killer next to the Zodiac Killer and the Golden State killer. With a narration that gives us goosebumps, we can't help but wonder what the fate was of the suspect that was never caught.Speaking of that Hurdy Gurdy Man song by Donovan, in Segment 2, Horror, Etc we're talking the 2007 David Fichner Zodiac that spawned multiple Marvel-verse characters.

Deciding to embrace it, the state line divided communities have yearly Halloween screenings of the 1976 docudrama horror film The Town That Dreaded Sundown. In 2013, a pair of kids leave a makeshift drive-in screening, only to find themselves confronted by a new Phantom Killer. A metafictional sequel produced by Jason Blum and Ryan Murphy, The Town That Dreaded Sundown.     In a small middle-American town parents have been gathered to hear the tragic story of Jimmy Harper. Jimmy is a normal clean-cut kid, doing well in school, a leader of the local 4H, and in love with the girl next door Mary Lane. Until the day he meets Jack at the local soda shop and is lured to Jack's marijuana den with the promise of swing dance lessons. Before you know it, Jimmy is hooked and going down the depravity drain to murder and prison. He and four of his siblings were visiting their sister Magalie Bamu and Eric Bikubi when Eric accused Kristy of doing witchcraft. Kristy drowned in a bath in an exorcism at their flat in Newham, east London, after days of torture. Taylar then covers the case of the Texarkana Moonlight Murders or "the Phantom Killer". After attacking a young couple on a lovers lane, month after month more attacks and murders that were similar seemed to follow. With a known total of 8 victims and 5 deaths- the Phantom Killer has never been located. After seeing a movie together on February 22nd in 1946, Jimmy Hollis and his girlfriend Mary Jeanne Larey parked on a secluded road known as a lovers' lane. Just minutes later, a man in a white mask forced them out of their car, struck them both with blunt force objects, and sexually assaulted Larey. Luckily both Hollis and Larey made it out alive, but future victims would not be so lucky. In today's episode we dive into the four violent attacks known as the Texarkana Moonlight Murders, and how the mystery surrounding the so-called Phantom Killer created such mass hysteria. Welcome back to Behind The Screams, I'm your host Aran and this week we are taking a closer look at the inspiration behind the movie - The Town That Dreaded Sundown - better known as Texarkana Moonlight Murders. The residents of Texarkana have been haunted by the events known as the Texarkana Moonlight Murders since 1946. That year, a masked murderer killed five people and seriously injured three others in a series of attacks that shook the town to its core. According to Texas Monthly, the presence of a serial killer (before the term was even coined) so spooked Texarkanans that they stocked up on guns and guard dogs, booby-trapped their homes, and even slept in hotels for safety after police failed for months to bring in the man the Texarkana Gazette christened the Phantom Killer.Credit - https://www.grunge.com/328814/the-famous-movie-inspired-by-the-texarkana-murder-mystery/For more content, follow here - https://linktr.ee/FirstClassHorror
