Philip, the oldest of three siblings, joined the military at age 18 and was deployed to Afghanistan. The Fall of Kabul and the resulting turmoil that led to a mass exodus of refugees, changed his perspective of his parents and gave him context for what they lived through after the war in Vietnam. His father was one of nine Vietnamese refugees who fled the country in 1984 in a small sampan fishing boat with no motor and just two oars. After seven days at sea, they were picked up by a French merchant ship and eventually resettled in the U.S. Their boat was tugged to France by the merchant ship and Philip's father always dreamed about finding that boat again. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Philip joined his father on a mission: find the sampan. They embarked on a quest for answers that would lead them to France, then California, and would eventually reunite the group of survivors nearly three decades later.  Episode Credits: Executive Producer: Tracey Nguyễn Mang Associate Producer: Saoli Nguyễn VBP theme music: Clarity, Paulina Vo Other music: The Quiet Hours, TREVOR KOWALSKI; Shifting Waters; HELMUT SCHENKER; I Will Remember, GAVIN LUKE; Image of You, JOHANNES BORNLÖF; Golden Thought; MEGAN WOLFFORD; Dismantle, PETER SANDBERG

Geoff Hylton joins me for this episode as we discuss drug addiction and the mechanisms that are involved, followed by a personal talk regarding addiction in our own lives and how it has played a role. We also cover Geoff's dating life, strange cultural practices of the Pacific Northwest, industry secrets behind "imitation crab", "wild-like fish" and other seafood conspiracies, sugar: the other white drug; the surprising benefits of prayer, and some of the dangers facing women today. The first half of this episode is more technical than the usual free episodes and we go deep into the processes that underly our biological and psychological functioning. You will hear some technical jargon, but it has plenty of comedic breaks and very genuine personal moments that make the science seem very palatable. This is a very personal episode and I like how it turned out. I hope you enjoy it. If you do, please share it with a friend. The best way to help the show is to talk about it.

September 2021 virtual meeting, with featured speaker Karla Stover, author of the recent book, Wicked Tacoma. Tacoma, the city where the rails meet the sails, has always been a place of innovation and rule-breakers. When the railroad came in the nineteenth century, business boomed, along with smuggling, bootlegging and prostitution. Men such as Peter Sandberg walked the line between criminal and respectable. Police in the growing town had their hands full not just with human criminals, but with stray cows, ducks and the occasional bear. Rumor has it that in the 1920s, gangsters Lucky Luciano and Frank Nitti were sent to cool their heels in the port city and may have been behind a smoke bomb attack on a movie theater. Join author Karla Stover as she delves into the wild and colorful past of the City of Destiny. *** With thanks to Tacoma Creates for support of our public programs.

Of all our greatest searching for purpose and value in life, No bigger search exists throughout humanity than our search for meaning. Celebrated psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl, in his groundbreaking book “Man's Search For Meaning” shared this insightful view: “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms — to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.” On today's show we explore: Reshaping our language of struggler and fear in order to find Gratitude in our challenges. Then resisting our urge of Fight, Flight Or fear- reframing our response for The Modern World. Living Life on Your Terms- Making a conscious choice to live as a vibrant human being. Owning your inner voice in order to silence the inner critic and remove the urge to self sabotage our endeavors. Learning to separate our human traits from our evolutionary and generational patterning to order to be more aligned with the essence of our authentic self. We also look at how we can form a more responsible human evolution towards our fellow human beings, the planet and within our existence in the universe. To borrow from the great Albert Einstein quote: “The most important decision we make, the one which is most aligned within our essence, is whether we live in a friendly or hostile universe” It becomes our responsibility to then decide whether we act in harmony within our responses, creating an existence that contributes to the forward motion of creation. Our minds are the gateway to our world. Everything we create, everything we experience- is a process of the mind. All that we feel, think and touch, all filtered through the perception of the mind. How do we get more aware, focused and in touch with our thoughts? Simple- Mindfulness. By slowing down our breathing and clearing the clutter of cobwebs that often cloud our thinking. An aligned and aware brain is a productive brain. It builds worlds. Khalil Gibran once said: “Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens.” With that-The way we think shapes the way we live. What mental, physical and psychological states take place as we move into mindfulness? Opening our heart Changing our breathing Activating energy centers The act of grounding Refocusing and re-establishing yourself to a state where you feel: Centered whole and complete in who you are. Religion tycks alltid ha funnits; i varje civilisation, i varje kultur, i alla etniska grupper, i varje samhälle.
