The Ghost Furnace - Episode 118 "Hairy Hands of Dartmouth" On this week's episode, we head back across the pond for more UK folklore. This time to a very specific region of Dartmouth along B3212 near Postbridge. This story has been the subject of many newspaper articles, books and conjectures going back over 100 years. In many ways, it has familiar elements we've looked at in other tales, but this one has some very unique characteristics which make for an interesting inspection. If you have a story you'd like to share, you can find us on Instagram, YouTube and TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com
Welcome to Season 2, Episode 9 of The Paranormal Rundown! The Gang of Nerds has been obliterated this month, Vic has Covid, David has neck problems, Fr. Mike is in a lot of pain, and JJ is taking in the fine dining and culture of Japan. Since we weren't able to get together and record a new episode, we thought we would do a recap of Season One. This started out as a simple idea of pull the top clips out of the season and make an episode out of it, but it turned into having about 9 hours or more of really great conversation! As a result, we decided to make it a four part series. We will be publishing an episode each Friday through the end of the year. Sort of a Paranormal Rundown countdown to 2025. Each episode will feature the best clips from five episodes last season. So that it is not just reruns, Vic and David will be adding a little commentary on each of the episode and history of the rundown as we go. This episode has conversation that covers Crop Circles, Hairy Hands, Ouija Boards, Estes Method, Azazel, Demons, Bamboo Chicken, Rocky Mountain Oysters, Cockroach Demon, Shared Stories, Hundredth Monkey Effect, The Antichrist, Bigfoot Encounter, Cheeseburger Cravings, Ghost Police Calls, and Spontaneous Combustion. Talk about a wide list of topics! We also have clips from our first guests, Father Michael Birdsong, paranormal writer Anna Maria Manalo, and retired police officer Val Zavala. We really enjoyed going back through these episodes and listening to some fascinating, and sometimes hilarious, conversation. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.We also have an ask of you the listener. David has been thinking of taking short clips like this out of each episode, and publishing it as it's own podcast. It would be maybe a 30-45 minute episode with some of the more interesting conversation from a full Rundown. If you have suggestions, or would like to see something like that, please email us at feedback@paranormalrundown.com. And as always, if you have any interest on joining us for a rundown, please let us know. The Paranormal Rundown is a partnership between the hosts David Griffith, JJ Johnson, Father Michael Birdsong, and Vic Hermanson.Be sure to check out our partner podcasts:You can find JJ at Southern Demonology, https://www.southerndemonology.comYou can find Vic at Trailer Trash Terrors, https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/vic-hermansonYou can find Father Birdsong at https://www.becomingahouseofprayer.com, as well as hear his new podcast Ending the Curse at:https://open.spotify.com/show/5yL7ZAN4wcRKnMPAlalVXW Hosted on Acast. For this week's episode of Local Legends, Martin has gathered round the campfire to talk all things Devon with folklorist, author, and host of The Folklore Podcast, Mark Norman. If you like a bit of folklore, particularly in podcast form, you're likely already acquainted with Mark, or with some of his work at least, as he is the creator and host of ‘the big show' when it comes to all things folkloric. The Folklore Podcast launched in 2016 and since then has become one of the biggest folklore podcasts in the world. For the show, Mark and a team of other fellow presenters interview world-class experts in the field of folklore and share their research with a wide audience, spreading their knowledge on a global scale. Outside of The Folklore Podcast though, Mark is a very busy person. He lives in Devon and is an independent folklore researcher and author, as well as an elected council member of The Folklore Society. His books include Black Dog Folklore from 2016, Telling the Bees and other Customs from 2020, and the focus of our chat today, The Folklore of Devon which came out in paperback just the other day. Mark has contributed to other books and magazines on areas of folklore and traditional belief, too, and he is the curator of The Folklore Library and Archive. Plus, and his most recent book, Zoinks!, looks at folklore through the lens of Scooby Doo – something which speaks to Mark's nature as a fun, imaginative, playful sort of person who approaches sometimes surprising subjects with rigour and passion. In this chat, we cover all of this and a lot else, including "Scone Politics," why Devon has quite so many black dog legends, strategies for avoiding malevolent faeries, the menace of Worzel Gummage, the Hairy Hands of Dartmoor, and much more besides! To learn more Mark and his work, do visit The Folklore Podcast website – thefolklorepodcast.com – which links to his books, his social media accounts, and his other work. And we will be back on Monday with an all-new County Episode all about the history and folklore of Huntingdonshire! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Have you ever felt a chill run down your spine whilst driving at night on unfamiliar roads? The story of the hairy hands has become part of the paranormal lore of Dartmoor. A pair of disembodied hands that supposedly grab onto vehicles' steering wheel and drive them off the road. The story has been repeated many times over the years, with varying inaccuracies. My family has its own version of this story, which I share with new evidence from my research into the original historical sources. In spring 2021, my father, Steve Casely, and I retraced the last part of the ill-fated route of Dr Helby from Cherrybrook Bridge to Postbridge. It was around the time of the 100th anniversary of the motorcycle accident that fatally wounded the Dr and injured his two young passengers. The sounds of the landscape and the Cherrybrook River flow hauntingly along with us, interspersed with my retelling of the incident and the newspaper reports of the time. Enjoy! Folge direkt herunterladen

The vast, bleak, desolate moorland of Dartmoor, located in Devon, southwest England, has given rise to a number of local folk-tales and legends. Arguably the most bizarre of these stories is the legend of a pair of ghostly, disembodied hands which are said to be responsible for the unusually high number of accidents and deaths on a particular stretch of road between Princetown and Two Bridges. Stephen Clements was my ‘on air husband', a best friend, co-worker, brother and tormentor all rolled into one. For over 4 and a half years we hosted Stephen and Cate at Breakfast which meant 4am alarms, no social lives and a chemistry that brought much mocking and laughter. I don't know if I've ever felt that connected to anyone else, he knew my best and my worst and ridiculed both. In June 2019 he left the show. In January 2020 he left the earth. My heart broke both times. I've been left with so many questions and much confusion. A large part of my identity was tied up in our partnership and now I'm trying to figure out who I am as Cate, not ‘and Cate'. In this first episode of The Cate Conway Podcast, I chat to Professor Siobhan O'Neill (Ulster University and Mental Health Champion for NI) about mental health and suicide. The mantra “It's OK not to be OK” is bandied about all over the place. We encourage people in distress to ‘talk to someone'. But what if you ‘are' the ‘someone' they speak to? How do you handle ‘that' conversation?
In 1921, a series of accidents on a small, rural road, carving through the heart of the boggy marshes and fields of Dartmoor, in South East England, led to a brief explosion in excitement concerning the ghostly image of a pair of disembodied hands, forcing drivers off the road and into potentially fatal accidents. Following a little dash of press magic, the story took hold and grew for over a hundred years, until today where it has become accepted as a staple in British Urban Legend. But how did it happen? How did a relatively innocuous story take such a hold of the public imagination for so long, preserving, evolving and growing with each passing generation? This is the story of the Hairy Hands of Dartmoor, a story that blurs the lines between fact and fiction and spawned into existence a fully fledged cryptid legend from nowhere. ------ For extended show notes, including maps, links and scripts, head over to darkhistories.com Support the show by using our link when you sign up to Audible: http://audibletrial.com/darkhistories or visit our Patreon for bonus episodes and Early Access: https://www.patreon.com/darkhistories Connect with us on Facebook: http://facebook.com/darkhistoriespodcast Or find us on Twitter: http://twitter.com/darkhistories & Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dark_histories/ Or you can contact us directly via email at contact@darkhistories.com or via voicemail on: (415) 286-5072 or join our Discord community: https://discord.gg/6f7e2pt Music was recorded by me © Ben Cutmore 2017 Other Outro music was Paul Whiteman & his orchestra with Mildred Bailey - All of me (1931). In light of the COVID19 epidemic, please note that Elaine and Paula took all the proper precautions needed to make this episode. Hands were washed multiple times, the area was disinfected before/after taping and social distancing was practiced throughout. STAY HOME and listen to this episode about creepy coincidences and hairy hands. Elaine talks about Mary and Barbara two women, 157 years apart who had eerie similarities on the circumstances of their death and their murderers. Paula speaks of hairy disembodied ghost hands who ended up being the cause of accidents and deaths. (GTTFP: 13:30) --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/waitwhaaat/message
Today we're traveling to Devon, the county known for its cream teas, scrumpy… and ghostly apparitions. The Hairy Hands are one of Dartmoor's most famous legends, but what exactly are they - and who do they belong to? We also travel to Buckfastleigh to meet Squire Cabell, the ‘monstrously evil man' and his hellish hounds that haunt the Devonshire countryside. In last week’s episode, Ghosts in Time, we looked at the strange occurrences that took place in the 1920s at Borley Rectory in Essex, England. What intrigues me most about the story is its slight air of credibility due to the reputable character of the witnesses and the anodyne nature of the supposed hauntings. But for others, a ghost story is nothing without something a little more sinister buried somewhere within... Featuring the terrifying Hairy Hands of Dartmoor.
