Are you ready for school to begin? Avoid being hated by your child's teacher and listen to this podcast with Jess. In this week's episode she shares insider tips on how to get your kids ready for the school year and how to have a great relationship with their teacher. Take Aways: 1. Make sure bed times and routines are in place before the school year starts. Start practicing a week before school starts so your kids are use to waking up early and going to bed earlier. 2. Read to your kids in the evenings. 3. Introduce yourself to your child's teacher and follow up a few days later with an email. 4. If you do have a problem with your child's teacher, communicate using "I" and always assume the best. 5. If you need to have a conversation with your child's teacher, make an appointment. The carpool line is not the place to have an in depth discussion about your child's grade.
We hark the return of Avoid Being Hated (@avoidbeinghated) who grace us with something really special. That's right: they done recommended us another movie! Looks like they lost their copy of Home Alone 3 though. So... let's get into Gigli before it starts sucking in planets. Good things! Featuring: man's desperate quest for nuggets, lickin' midriffs, penis vs vagina: ultimate showdown, Detective Christopher Walken, one flexed waddle and the very model of a many many monologue. Int'rested?
Liz and Adam have embarked on a 30 day journey to rid their lives of all happiness and joy, otherwise known as the Whole 30 Diet. In this week's episode we chat with Beki, a Whole 30 graduate, and she shares some tips and pointers to help make getting along with your friends easier during this time of sadness. ;-)
Show Notes: This week Liz and Toni chat with Courtney from The QuadCast and Shrink 2 Shrink. This is a must listen podcast for anyone thinking about seeing a therapist. All everyone should be seeing one! Take Aways: Don’t dump on your therapist and then never change. Do the work. Know yourself. You know if something won’t work for you based on your thinking and personality. It’s okay to find another way to reach the same goal. (However this isn’t an excuse for not doing the work) Interview your therapist before making a commitment. It’s okay to find a different therapist if you don’t click. Stay away from unprofessional therapists. If your therapist asks you to dinner… run away. About Courtney: Courtney is the host of the QuadCast and Shrink 2 Shrink podcasts. He’s also a program manager for a counseling center, foster agency and therapist. When he’s not listening to people’s problems he’s forcing other podcasts to do their daily planks and keeping everyone updated on Twitter. Follow him on Twitter at @QuadFatherMFT. About Liz and Toni: Liz and Toni spend half an hour every week encouraging others to be kind and do unto others. Join them by subscribing to Avoid Being Hated’s email list, and on iTunes. They would appreciate an honest review. This week they talk with Myk O'Connor, a driver for the ride share company Fasten and host of the Can I Get a Ride podcast to get another perspective. You'll need to take a listen as Myk shares one experience that left Toni speechless. Take Aways: Don't send drunk friends home alone! This is both dangerous for your friend and the driver! You can sit in the front or the back, it's your choice. When you are inside the car, remember to use your inside voices. Remember to tip! Uber allows in app tipping, so make sure you share the love (and the money) with your driver.
Yay!!!! We made it to our 50th episode! Go us! Last week Toni & Liz gave their perspective on using ride share companies to get around. This week they talk with Myk O'Connor, a driver for the ride share company Fasten and host of the Can I Get a Ride podcast to get another perspective.
Have you ever ridden in an Uber, Lyft, or Taxi? If so you might be able to relate to this week's podcast episode. Liz and Toni are discussing ride sharing etiquette and a few tips for their drivers. Take Aways: Drive assertively, but also safely. Don't kill your passengers, they still have to pay, tip, leave a review at the end of the ride. This isn't the Daytona 500. Take turns at reasonable speeds. We like a car that smells clean... not SCENTED. We also like a car that is clean. You don't have to drive a BMW, but please make an effort to keep the back seat useable.
Finishing up our conversation with Guire about not annoying your ER nurse. We wander into not annoying other patients and how Toni transports her husband to the ER. Guire has more good tips about conversation etiquette with your nurse and we finish up with our final take aways.
What really constitutes an emergency? Does anyone really like needles and shots? Do I need to clarify that I do not like shots or needles? Meet our friend Guire. He is the ER nurse we all hope to get when we have to visit the ER! ...and, let's be serious, we've all been there! Today, we chat all things ER. Take Aways: Stick with the 1-10 scale. Don't tell the nurse it's a 12...it doesn't help. Triage is an algorithm of 1-5 emergencies. You are being skipped for a reason...someone else's emergency is more ....um, urgent! Think of our medical system as one of finite resources. If you are there for a scrape you will be using a resource that someone else, in more urgent need may need.
Can you be hated by therapist? Turns out the answer is no, but just in case, you should listen to this episode. And. Who should see a therapist? ...um, everyone. Hear why. Today Toni and Liz are joined by Courtney, the QuadFather from the QuadCast and discuss etiquette in counseling sessions and which couch to lay on.
Finishing up our conversation with Brett from last week, we talk more about his experience.
Liz and Toni both cry in this episode. Bring your tissues and join us as we chat with Brett. Brett is a veteran of the US Navy who lost the lower part of his right leg in a heroic act. He has recently competed in Prince Harry’s Invictus Games in both Sitting Volleyball and Swimming where Brett was awarded the Gold medal (Sitting Volleyball) and a Silver medal (Swimming: 200 Relay). Brett is also on the USA Sitting Volleyball team and is eyeing the World Championships next year and the Paralympics in Tokyo in 2020.
We are diving into the life of pool guys. Our friend Paul joins us from the Varmints podcast to chat pool maintenance and the dos and don'ts that go along with having someone clean your pool.
Dr. Julie Kinn is a clinical and research psychologist and the co-host of the comedy show The Station Wagon Podcast. She grew up Jewish and shares her experiences and insights with us this week as she endeavors to raise her kids in the Jewish faith as well. Take aways for this episode: 1. Check your Hebrew tattoo with someone before putting it on your body to make sure it says what you want it to. 2. Respect people's beliefs. Have conversations and listen more than you speak. 3. Don't assume American muslims and jews hate each other.

A little forethought, planning and communication can alleviate issues later in the relationship, and if the relationship comes to an end. TEXTING IN CAPS SHOULD BE USED SPARINGLY, LIKE FOR SARCASM AND URGENCY. Liz and Toni discuss this and other useful texting tips to help you be liked in your text threads.
Movies. Sitting in a theater for any amount of time can be fun or trying depending on the people around you. Being part of an enthusiastic crowd can make your night, but a loud talker who can't follow the plot can ruin the experience. Liz and Toni chat about the little things you can do to make everyone's experience better, including your own! Take Aways: Buy your tickets ahead of time and avoid the lines! Using a site, or app like Fandango makes the process quick and painless! Be considerate of those around you. Turn your phone off, or at least to silent and lower the brightness of your screen for crying out loud! Hang in there for the plot reveal and learn to whisper if you have to ask questions. Pick up your trash. No one wants to wade in or out through your cartons of popcorn. If you have a small bladder, pick your seat accordingly. #PodernFamily moments The One Good Thing podcast comes up while we are discussing the Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez movie "Gigli," because we wonder if there is anything good from this one star wonder. Our very own Lord Saunders co-hosts The Gravity Beard podcast this week. Their discussion of current events and things that happened on this day in history is riveting. About Liz and Toni: Liz has been to the theater more and more in the past 6 months, while Toni stays home to avoid napping at the theater. They have varying whisper volumes and are passionate about helping people be kind to one another on all occasions. Join them by subscribing to Avoid Being Hated's email list, and on iTunes. They would appreciate an honest review.
Today we tackle a current event because it needs to be talked about. United has a history of mishandling situations, but more importantly the follow up for these situations. When a company makes a mistake and forces their customers to pay the price, the issue compounds itself. The initial United situation could have been handled, even poorly, without the public backlash if they had only used a little common sense in how they handled their customers. Take Aways: Not every United employee would have handled this situation, and are not to blame. Do not take your frustration out on those employees. Write or tweet United directly. Be kind to our gate agent. Follow Wendy's on Twitter. United, this means you too. Don't be disingenuous in your apology. When you make a mistake fix it, own it, apologize sincerely. At the end of the day, we believe United needs to use some common sense in how they treat customers and handle the backlash of a mistake.
Parenting is difficult. Dealing with other parents can be too. Toni and Liz discuss the different ideaologies and challenges that go along with parenting.
Today Liz and Toni are joined by Hannah (who Toni can't believe is even old enough to drive) who shares what she's learned during her three hour daily commute. Take Aways: 1. Don't block the intersection. Seriously people... WHY??? 2. Traffic circles, if you don't know what these are (aka you didn't learn to drive in the Northeast), watch and observe before entering one. It isn't tricky if you do what everyone else is doing. 3. Blinkers don't mean speed up so we can't get over. Also, it's good to use them when you are making a turn so you don't get rear ended. 4. SLOW DOWN. We all get there eventually.
#PodPrank! Enjoy and have a Happy April Fool's Day! ~ Liz and Toni
Waitresses, hostesses and guests. Liz and Toni spend time talking about the easy ways you can avoid being hated. at a restaurant.
Toni is out sick! Ack! Thankfully, The Toph from The Gravity Beard podcast joins Liz for an episode about being a good neighbor. Some of our favorites? Don't' be a weird room mate. Don't speed through the neighborhood streets. Don't be inconsiderate with noisy activities and animals!
Today Liz and Toni are joined by Mark Norman. Mark runs an IT Consulting firm in Miami, Florida where he provides white glove service to high end clients. We learned lots of useful tips on things to do before calling technical support, AND information to have handy when you do make the call. Take Aways: Reboot your computer. It really is a remedy. There are scripts and things that run when the computer starts up that are designed to fix things. (that's the non-technical explanation....haha) If you are calling a friend for help, try Googling your issue or asking someone else in the office before you call IT. Pay attention to the problem you need solved. The more information you have when you talk to IT, the easier it will be for them to solve your issue. Don't be that guy. Seriously.

Show Notes: Toni and Liz discuss their love of Florida sports and how to avoid being hated when you attend a sporting event either live or in someone's home. Take Aways: Remember to bring your manners to the stadium or arena. Avoid drinking too much, swearing too much, and SIT IN YOUR ASSIGNED SEAT. (All caps for emphasis- from Toni) The world does not end if your team loses. No one likes a sore loser, or a gloating winner. If you are watching an event at someone's house, offer to bring a snack or drinks, or both. Clean up after yourself. You might not be invited back to watch the game on the 72 inch HD television if you leave a gigantic mess. About The Liz & Toni: Liz is a diehard Miami Hurricanes fan and Toni is a diehard Florida State Seminoles fan. In spite of their college football differences they are still able to maintain a friendship except for that one day of the year when the teams play each other. Then all bets are off. Liz and Toni are passionate about helping people be kind to one another on all occasions (except when the Hurricanes play the Seminoles). Join them by subscribing to Avoid Being Hated's email list, and on iTunes. They would appreciate an honest review. Credits: Audio post production by Lord Saunders Music: Actionable – Bensound
The Toph from the Gravity Beard podcast joins Liz and Toni to discuss how to avoid being hated by your spouse. What are some of the challenges that commonly face married couples throughout a marriage? Toph give us the male perspective and how he keeps the romance alive. Take Aways: Listen. Learn to listen. You don't always have to solve the problem, sometimes your spouse just needs to be heard. Keep the romance alive. Bring home flowers and continue to date your spouse. Rescue. Men, sometimes your wife needs to be rescued from kids and house life. Rescue her. Budget. Have budget meetings. Money is the number one source of marital fights. Have a budget, talk about the budget and stick to the budget. About The Toph: The Toph hosts the Gravity Beard podcast where he, and sometimes friends, talk about sports, entertainment, current news, daily life and whatever is interesting. He has been married for 9 years and has 3 kids. He has become quick friends with Toni and Liz, so you can expect to hear more from him in the future. ABH recently did a guest appearance on the Gravity Beard podcast.
Eric Nisall joins Liz and Toni to discuss all the ways we annoy our accountants....okay, we did try to avoid being hated while doing the interview so we didn't bring up all the things we do for our accountants. Eric brings a voice of reason to the accounting conversation we we talked about deductions and timelines. Take Aways: Ask questions when hiring a new accountant. Interview them and find someone who specializes in your area. Not every accountant is an expert in every area. Make sure the preparer form is attached and they are signing the tax return so they are accountable for their work. Ask how they are getting paid. Going to places with high volume and general services may mean that you miss out on more specialized deductions. The more organized your records, the less you spend. There is a direct correlation. Pay your accountant on time. Do NOT call the day after submitting your paperwork to ask if the return is done.

Take aways Consider the wife of the firefighter while on shift. Be compassionate towards her while the only parent at home and try to understand the emotional stress. Give them their space when they are off work. Be respectful of their "off time." Don't take advantage of their passion to want to help people.
