Joint Pain, Psoriasis & Hormones Healed as ER Nurse Practitioner Moves Toward Functional Nursing | Connie Wade

Michele Scarlet sits down with RN, Nurse Practitioner, and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner Connie Wade for an honest conversation about what 25 years inside the emergency room taught her about the limits of conventional medicine, why her own doctor told her she was not "sick enough" to treat, and how she finally healed the symptoms she had been "swiping away" for years. In this powerful Health Detective Podcast episode, Connie shares her personal journey through psoriasis, debilitating joint pain at 48, chronic reflux, daily ibuprofen use, estrogen dominance, heavy painful periods, more than 20 years of night shift, H. pylori, an overwhelmed liver and gallbladder, food sensitivities to her favorite foods, and a depleted gut microbiome. Together, Michele and Connie unpack how functional lab testing gave Connie the vindication she had been looking for, why she healed in three months once she addressed the root causes, and why she chose to keep working in the ER while building her functional health practice on the side. This episode dives deep into: Why her doctor said "she wasn't sick enough" and sent her home with ibuprofen The functional labs that finally explained her symptoms after years of being dismissed How 20 plus years of night shift flatlined her cortisol and disrupted her hormones H. pylori, food sensitivities, and the gut findings that changed everything Why psoriasis, joint pain, and heavy periods are not just "normal aging" The reframe that helped Connie cut gluten, sugar, and dairy without feeling deprived Why so many nurses are leaving bedside nursing and the third option most do not consider How to build a functional nursing side practice without leaving your license or your job Why going all in or all out of conventional medicine limits your reach as a clinician The four simple daily practices Connie recommends to every patient How to ask your family for support when you start your healing journey Michele and Connie also discuss why the body is constantly trying to send messages, why most of us swipe them away for years, and why functional lab testing catches dysfunction long before conventional labs ever turn "abnormal." If you are a woman struggling with joint pain, psoriasis, hormone imbalance, or symptoms your doctor keeps dismissing, or you are a nurse, NP, or clinician quietly exploring functional medicine as a career path, this episode will change how you view your body and what is possible.

What if every "non-compliant" patient was actually a signal that the system isn't working for them? In this episode, Jamie sits down with Jaclyn Taylor, Clinical Strategy Director at Your Health and a nurse practitioner who started her career as a home-based provider in 2020 — thrown straight into the fire of COVID, isolated patients, and a healthcare world rewriting itself in real time. What she saw inside patients' homes — medications scattered on tables, food insecurity, missing transportation — changed how she thinks about every chart she's ever read. You'll hear: Why a nurse-first pathway gives nurse practitioners a fundamentally different lens than a medical school pathway — and why patients feel it What working across home care, telehealth, trauma, and wellness teaches you about treating the whole human, not just the diagnosis Why trauma surgery turned Jacqueline into a believer in proactive, longitudinal care — and what gets missed when we only meet patients after something has already gone wrong The two words she uses to describe what's most broken in traditional healthcare: fragmentation and misalignment How empathy stops being a poster and starts being operational — built into the design of care itself If you've ever felt invisible inside the healthcare system, or if you're the one trying to fix it, this conversation reframes the whole game. Darius Sharpe has spent over two decades watching the same patients cycle through emergency rooms with the same conditions, the same medications, and the same unaddressed root cause. As a paramedic-turned-ER nurse, he started asking a question nobody around him wanted to answer: why are we treating the result instead of the cause? What followed was years of self-experimentation — continuous glucose monitors, serial lab draws, coronary imaging — on a man who, by every outward measure, looked like a picture of health. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Jo Taylor, author of the book Margaret of Thibodaux. Jo is an obstreperous, retired ER Nurse who is likely an obstreperous writer too. She grew up with three stepmothers (not at the same time). She's lived on a boat and traced her genealogy back to the year 310 (maybe, probably, you know how genealogy is). She's been married for 33 years and all her hero characters are based on her husband, a hero in real life. Her first book, Postcards: Collected Poems and Short Stories, came out in July 2024. Margaret of Thibodaux, her first novel, released on March 18, 2025.   In Carole's book review, she stated: 14-year-old Margaret is not going to let her father erase the memory of her deceased mother by bringing another woman (certainly not a stepmother) into their home. Her best friend, Honey tries to convince her there's nothing to worry about. The new woman is a doctor after all, loved by the entire town. But for the past six years her mother has appeared at her feet and lulled her to sleep with her favorite lullaby. Margaret is convinced that couldn't possibly continue if another woman occupies the master bedroom.   Jo Taylor masters this coming-of-age story which takes place in Louisiana during the summer of 1974. You can almost feel the heat of the bayou as Margaret and her friends solve the problems of the world on the swings at the water's edge.   The local town medium is the one person Margaret feels can help her contact her mother to make sure their routine won't change. But no medium, or talk with friends, or even pleading with her father can assure her things will be fine. It isn't until she finds a poem at her mother's grave that she begins on a path to a solution she can live with.   This is a story you'll want to put on your TBR list.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Jo Taylor Website: https://www.jotaylorauthor.com/ Substack: https://jotaylorauthor.substack.com/ https://x.com/JoTaylorAuthor https://www.instagram.com/jotaylorauthor/   Purchase Margaret of Thibodaux on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/463ocIY Ebook: https://amzn.to/45I7GiE   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? In this episode, Sarah delves into the integration of scientific principles with spiritual practices in nature-based education, highlighting a holistic approach that nurtures both mind and soul. She discusses how scientific research informs our understanding of developmental stages from childhood to adulthood, complementing spiritual growth. Nature is portrayed as a bridge between scientific inquiry and spiritual exploration, offering transformative experiences. Sarah explains how combining scientific insights with spiritual practices can turn life's challenges into opportunities for self-understanding. The episode also explores the role of mindfulness and meditation in development, supported by scientific findings. Furthermore, Sarah emphasizes the enhancement of community through a dual lens of science and spirituality in education. Practical advice is offered for incorporating these elements into nature-based learning. Finally, Sarah shares promising new discoveries and practices that point towards the future of nature-based education.Meet Sarah: Sarah was born in Boston in 1954 between two hurricanes. In third grade, inspired by her teacher Mrs. Wamsley, Sarah won a prize at her school for a bird's nest collection. Her family lived in the forest in Dover, Massachusetts, next to the 1,200 acre Hale Reservation which, rain or shine, was her playground and sanctuary. In addition Sarah's grandparents had a summer home on Narragansett Bay where she roamed freely, feet cut by barnacles, eyes stinging with salt water, hundreds of sunburns, ticks and poison ivy, Sarah loved it all.Sarah sailed across the Atlantic at age 17, then took to the mountains as an instructor for NOLS and Outward Bound. Her inherited skills as a teacher blended with her love for the outdoors as she made her way across the American West and Alaska taking students of all ages into the alchemical opportunity that nature based adventure, and education, provides. In 1976 Sarah was couch surfing in Lander Wyoming, waiting for winter to pass so she could get back out into the field with a paycheck. To pay her bills, Sarah took a paid training course at the local hospital to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. A kind and competent RN took Sarah under her wing and encouraged her to consider nursing school. Sarah graduated in 1979 as an RN. Her love for nature merged with the health sciences as she stepped into the best career she can imagine. In her 46 year career as an RN Sarah has worked in rural healthcare clinics, regional hospitals, schools and third world countries. She has worked as a midwife, ER Nurse and Critical Care Nurse and everything in between. Raising three children and 12 hour hospital shifts was a recipe for burn out. This is when Sarah found yoga as a potent stress management tool. Yoga led her to its sister science, Ayurveda, the oldest healthcare system on the planet. Sarah now combines modern medicine with the time tested wisdom and science of Ayurveda to teach deep wellness. Deep wellness is a protective state of body, mind and soul that can be present even when we are challenged by poor health and aging. She is a multi-certified yoga, Ayurveda and meditation teacher, Enneagram Coach and grandmother to three adventuresome growing children. She lives on the skirt of a mountain in Western Colorado with thousands of acres of National Forest a few miles up the road. Professional development practitioner and veteran emergency nurse Kristen Cline discusses her article, "America's ER crisis: Why the system is collapsing from within." Using the TV drama "The Pitt" as a reference point, she argues that the reality of the emergency department is exponentially more chaotic and dangerous than portrayed. Kristen shares her frontline perspective on the intersecting crises crippling the system: an epidemic of workplace violence where assault is treated as "part of the job," a wisdom gap created by an exodus of experienced nurses, and a perpetual backlog caused by hospital overcrowding and a lack of downstream facilities. The conversation reveals how profit-driven management and impending Medicaid cuts are accelerating the closure of rural hospitals and vital services, creating health care deserts. Her core message is a stark warning: the safety net is tearing, and it has been held together only by the sacrifice of health care workers who are running out of hope.
