Financial trauma is a real thing. Financial shame is real. And financial abuse is real. And these all influence our money habits, and the way we feel about money.Quite often my parent's desire to control my money, take over my finances, charge me rent to live in their house once I graduated high school, and their own endless financial struggles began to pile up. I started off learning really toxic financial habits. I also entered into a relationship after my first year of college where I was constantly financially shamed by my abuser and my financial moves were heavily controlled – so much so I had a high-balance secret credit card so I could buy coffee without my abuser knowing. Needless to say, I've got financial trauma. I feel a ton of shame around money. In this episode, we're going to break down where shame and financial trauma comes form and exactly how you can heal from it. I'm joined by Steven M. I am living with bipolar. It's the lovable sludge monster living on my shoulder every day and as I'm getting to know it, it blooms into something new. My experience, as well as the four women interviewed throughout this episode, is personal and different from others. Personal bipolar experiences are not shared anywhere outside of private conversations–making bipolar a taboo topic and a sensitive one to discuss. So, just like we're publicly talking about periods now (and the real truth about them), we are going to talk about bipolar. Take care while listening to this episode as sensitive topics such as suicidal ideation, medication, and we will mention frequently triggering content throughout the episode. Sarah Li Cain wants you to be open to opportunities and to make independence a priority. Sarah was born in Hong Kong, grew up in Canada, has lived in Australia, South Korea and China, and is currently in the US. Sarah worked mainly as a teacher, but the key to her survival and success was to be open to opportunities along the way. Knowing that she couldn't be a teacher in the US if she moved there from China with her husband and new son, Sarah looked into ways to make money online. Sarah ended up finding freelance writing as something she could do from anywhere in the world and focused on personal finance writing. Today, Sarah makes over $100,000 a year working part-time from home, creating content for financial brands and online publications. It's not easy to create in-demand content and get paid for it, but her desires to be independent and to be free to spend her time the way she wants, keep her on track. Sarah is also the host of the Beyond the Dollar podcast, where she has deep and honest conversations about how money affects our well-being. Want a career that involves travel? Teaching offers exactly that. Sarah was born a traveller and knew she wanted to have a career that took her across the globe ever since she was a kid. She went into teaching and moved to China, where the low cost of living made it easy to save and travel. She then grew her side hustle of freelance writing to her full time gig and moved to the US with her husband and baby boy. You'll love her story. We also chat about... Advice for others interested in teaching overseas What it was like to give birth overseas Teaching overseas in China How she planned moving to the US How she grew her freelance writing side hustle to her full time job The importance of setting boundaries Her current FI goals Enjoy this chat with Sarah, and please subscribe to us in iTunes if you enjoyed it! Show notes and links from today's episode Sarah's podcast: Beyond the Dollar Sarah on Instagram Western Union Moneygram TransferWise Fincon Key takeaways from our chat with Sarah 1 - Teaching makes more travel possible Sarah knew ever since she was a kid that she wanted to travel as an adult. So to make it possible, she went directly into a career that not allows you to travel, but also pays for your housing and even flight tickets: teaching. She says the most important is to have some experience, and then simply get in contact with a recruitment agency that'll help you find jobs overseas. And so she decided to go to China. 2 -The hard part of going freelance During her time in China, Sarah was building a hefty emergency fund for her move to the US. She also had a newborn - which her and her husband had to plan carefully for. She was also working on her side hustle of freelance writing, eventually replacing her teacher salary. After moving to the US, she tells us that the hardest part was the isolation. She was adjusting to motherhood, to the US and working freelance online. Once she moved to a big city she says things got much better. 3 - The importance of setting boundaries She learnt how to balance freelance work, family time and her own time by clearly setting boundaries. She's learnt to negotiate boundaries with her family and re-assessed her priorities so she knew which clients to keep and which took too much of her time. By making sure she's organising her time efficiently and doing what is most important, she's found a way to be balanced. The results: her freelance income has doubled! Questions? Like or dislike? After driving for 20 hours to Orlando, Florida from Hamilton, Ontario, I decided that my 51st episode of the show would be a live solo episode from the podcast studio at FinCon 2018. What am I talking about for 25 minutes? Podcasts, of course! I listened to 18 hours of podcasts during my drive. The last 2 hours I had a live person in the car, Sarah Li-Cain, from the website High Fiving Dollars and the podcast Beyond The Dollar, so I turned the podcasts off and we had a conversation instead! Many of the episodes I listened to were more than an hour long so I didn't listen to as many as you might be thinking. In today's live, unedited, solo episode, I talk a bit about FinCon but mostly about the 7 podcasts I listened to during my 2.5 day road trip. Here they are, in no particular order: Stacking Benjamins Afford Anything Beyond The Dollar The Money and Media Podcast Mo' Money Podcast The Fairer Cents The Money Millhouse You should check out all of these podcasts, but also all of the podcasts nominated for Plutus Awards this year. You can find the list here. If you need to pick one, I 100% recommend The Fairer Cents. Tanja and Kara are talking about things we should all be talking about and they are really good at it. This is my favourite podcast. I had a great trip down travelling through 8 states - New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. On the way back, I get to add 2 more states, Maryland and the District of Columbia. See you when I'm back in Canada! NEXT EPISODE 52 - David Jenkins

Financial decision made while you are in a relationship can long outlast that relationship. A little forethought, planning and communication can alleviate issues later in the relationship, and if the relationship comes to an end. Our guest today, Sarah Li Cain is a financial story teller who joins us to chat about how to succeed financially in relationships.
Do your spending habits and investments align with your values? In other words, what do want your money to do for you? Do your habits, practices, and investments reflect that? Sarah Li-Cain, a financial storyteller for High Fiving Dollars explains the importance of knowing what you value as an investor. Sarah and Doug discuss how to identify your values and how to be mindful about what you do with your money. If your spending habits and investments don’t help you meet your goals, then a realignment is in order. What should you do if you inherit money from the United States? If you find yourself at the receiving of an inheritance, what should you do next? If you inherit money from America, there are different consideration than receiving an Israeli inheritance. An inheritor of American investments (especially a beneficiary of an IRA) need to know what to do next. Doug has some questions to ask your cross-border financial advisor to avoid unnecessary taxes and overall general headaches. Sarah Li Cain went from broke to six figures after hitting rock bottom and deciding to change her relationship with money. Sarah is willing to share that journey with us. She was quite intentional and set goals for her journey. Taking small baby steps and working her way forward. Don't forget to check out Sarah's site highfivingdollars.com she has some great free resources for you. About Sarah: I’m Sarah, and I’m here to get you thinking about money not just in the dollar and cents sense (haha, get it?), but the psychology behind our spending behaviors. You know you should save more, spend less and all that, but why aren’t you following some of the great advice out there? Or you know you should invest some of your heard earned money, but are too scared to even open an investment account? It really boils down to how we feel about money. Sounds cheesy, but it’s true. If you’ve been taught that investment is meant to be confusing and you need to learn a lot of crazy technical jargon, then that belief is going to lead you to never spend a dime on any type of investment. Or if you’re stressed and trying to run away from certain problems, then that stress will mostly likely manifest in your spending habits. I learned the hard way when I ended up jobless, homeless and $9,000 in credit card over an ex-boyfriend. Through that experience I learned that being kind to myself was key to living a richer life. Once I intertwined physical, mental and financial wellness together, I was able to grow my bank account and live a much more fulfilled life (just ask my husband and adorable son). In the end, money is a tool. But we still attach feelings and beliefs towards money. So to figure out and better our financial situation, then we need to change those feelings and beliefs. Welcome to Richer Soul - Your journey to more a purposeful, intentional, amazing life. Where are you going to go and how are you going to get there? Let's figure that our together. At the core is the financial well being to be able to do what you want, when you want, how you want. It's about personal freedom! Thanks for listening!
Want an example of how an emergency fund can come in useful? How about two examples? Kate Dore from Cashville Skyline shares how her's saved her big time. Long description: Who knew an emergency fund could save your life not once, but twice! So is the story of Kate Dore from Cashville Skyline which she shared in full detail for this episode of the podcast. Talk about someone who turned lemons into lemonade! Most people would begrudge their bad luck when faced with two layoffs in 10 years, but not Kate. Instead of complaining or just struggling through it all, she took it as a big lesson in becoming financially prepared. Which later turned out to be her big passion, which is why she's now on the road to becoming a financial planner. If there's only one thing you can take away from this episode, it's this - life happens, so have an emergency fund just in case. I've certainly been thankful for mine on more than one occasion in my life, that's for sure. Not only that, having an emergency fund is hands down the first thing I tell people to set up as they start their personal finance journey. It may not be fun or sexy, but having one will literally save your life! I'm excited to see where Kate ends up after becoming a full-fledged Certified Financial Planner, but until then it looks like she's been busy the past few months creating some great blog posts and personal finance courses. I've linked them below so you can check them out. Join Me on the Self Worth to Net Worth Challenge! Also, as I mentioned, myself, Sarah Li Cain from High Fiving Dollars and Tara Falcone from ReisUP have come together to create a unique 21-day challenge to combine our expertises in money mindsets, budgeting and investing. You'll get an email once a day for 21 days giving you a full outline on what you need to do to feel empowered about your money and take action! > Kate's Top Blog Posts How I Boosted My Credit Score Above 800 Quitting Your Job? Personal finance isn't just about money. It's about emotions, habits, triggers, mindsets and relationships. I chat about this and more with money storyteller Sarah Li Cain. Long description: Personal finance isn't just about money. It's about emotions, habits, triggers, mindsets and relationships. Many of these aspects of personal finance are explored with Sarah Li Cain, author at High Fiving Dollars, in this podcast episode. Sarah, a fellow Canadian now living in the U.S. with her husband and son, isn't just another personal finance blogger. She's a money storyteller on a mission to teach others about how your actions can truly affect your finances in ways you may have never thought. Take her story for example. Throughout most of her life she was a "Yes Man." Always saying yes when asked for help and putting herself second to provide for those she loved. This doesn't sound so bad, that is until someone takes advantage of your kindness. Which was the case for one of the relationships she was in, where she found herself stuck with $9,000 in debt after the breakup. Sarah doesn't want this to be your story, and she shares more thoughtful pieces of advice in our interview. Not only that, she's developed a number of great resources to help you on your personal finance journey I've listed below. Take Sarah's Spending Triggers Course Sarah's recently created a two-week course all about the triggers that make us overspend and generally mishandle our money. If you want to learn how to curb your spending (and find out why you’re doing it in the first place), sign up to take her course. You won't be disappointed! I was lucky enough to preview her course before she officially launched it, and thought it was a really great and unique program that I knew listeners of my podcast would enjoy.
