Robert Kidney of The Numbers Band 15-60-75 : Part 2 on Zig At The Gig. Robert Kidney founding member, singer songwriter, composer, and guitarist for the Number band. The Numbers Band (a.k.a. 15-60-75) are an American blues rock[1] and experimental rock band formed in Kent, Ohio, United States in 1969. They are part of the 'Akron Sound' that sprang forth from their home state. The original personnel were Robert Kidney (guitar, lead vocals), the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde's brother Terry Hynde (saxophone), Hank Smith (guitar, keyboards), Greg Colbert (bass) and Tim Hudson (drums). Chris Butler, from Tin Huey and The Waitresses, also played in the band for a stint as a bassist. They premiered as a live act at the local nightspot The Kove in July 1970. Later, they incorporated jazzy influences as well and they have stuck with their sound ever since. By 1972, Gerald Casale, future co-founder of Devo (bass), and David Robinson were added to the lineup. Casale was thrown out after wearing a monkey mask onstage. Due to interior pressures, Kidney terminated the project by year's end and joined his brother Jack's band, King of Hearts. However, King of Hearts reformed as a new Numbers Band a few weeks later with a retooled lineup that consisted of the Kidney brothers, Hynde, Drake Gleason (bass) and Jay Brown (drums). After two years of playing gigs, Brown left the band and Robinson came back. Michael Stacey (guitar), was added prior to the cutting of their 1976 live album Jimmy Bell's Still in Town. The following year, Gleason was replaced by Bart Johnson (bass). The Numbers Band, like most of the other Ohioans, never became renowned nationally and were not signed by the major labels. HUMP DAY! As we get over the hump & head towards the weekend, we noticed that there's some snow in the forecast on Sunday! So, as Frankie Macdonald would say, "BE PREPARED!!!" In the news this morning, the Governor of California declared a State of Emergency due to the wildfires in L.A., Trump is going to rename the Gulf of Mexico, Facebook is apparently getting rid of "fact-checkers", and a suspect in the attempted homicide in Tomah on Thanksgiving Day was arrested. In sports, we took a look at the upcoming schedules for the Bucks & the Badgers, and the Wild Card weekend schedule in the NFL. Plus, a check on the coaching carousel. And ICYMI, the WWE is taking the 2026 Royal Rumble to Saudi Arabia! We let you know what's on TV tonight, and if you're a big fan of "The Shining", you've got a chance to watch it at the Overlook Hotel this year as it celebrates it's 45th Anniversary. And speaking of movie anniversaries, we ran down a list of movies that are turning 50 in 2025! Elsewhere in movie news, a theater chain is pulling a 7-11 & letting you bring your own bucket to their theaters on January 19th for "National Popcorn Day". Cool story about a couple of Lions fans who connected over a recent tragedy. Some food-related stuff today with the Girl Scouts announcing that they'll be discontinuing a few of their cookie flavors after this year, the new McDonald's McValue menu, and Busch beer is offering a few single people the chance to speed-date at "Date-Tona" in February. Also, a look at some of the menu additions to NFL stadiums during the playoffs. And during today's "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a mom who left her kids in the car while she gambled at a casino, a Hooters waitress that got a DUI, and a 9 year-old in Arizona who got a legitimate tattoo. Esma also shares her experience of enjoying great sushi delivered by a robot waitress on a bullet train. They wrap up by revisiting A Taste of History and indulging in some amazing chocolate. [Ep310]

All music, no annoying chatter! A way back when, every year I would crank it up at our annual holiday hootenannies. Then eventually posting the track list online, and generally spreading the cheer. And every year people would beg me to burn them a copy. I even burned dozens of CDs as Christmas gifts in 2000. Seems that people really dig it because of the wide variety of Christmas music; it's got everything from Combustible Edison to Frank Sinatra, from the most excellent holiday special ever The Year Without a Santa Claus to the Waitresses, to Bing, Ella, Burt and lots more. I revised and expanded it for the modcast back in 2007.Oh and stay tuned for a new Christmas modcast coming Sunday, Dec. 22! Happy Krimble! “Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential 90s musicians and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in the book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. Our guest today on this encore episode is the guitarist of the Waitresses and songwriter of the classic song, “Christmas Wrapping,” Chris Butler. He talks about how the song came to be and its legacy as a Christmas classic. Musical credits: Etude 13 LaSalle by Blue Dot Sessions Theme song from Audiojungle. What's up, dudes? I've got Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas and Scott Leopold from Holly Jolly X'masu here to talk the mutant disco/no wave album “A Christmas Record!” From ZE Records, it was a triumph of experimental Christmas music.Founded in 1978 by Michael Zilkha and Michel Esteban, ZE was one of the most popular rated labels, capturing the emerging New York sound of the period. They gained exposure through a distribution deal with Island Records. In fact, before long they had signed such acts as Kid Creole, the Waitresses, Was (Not Was), Cristina, and James White. Called “the best independent record label in the world” and “the world's most fashionable label,” they closed their doors in ‘84.In 1981, ZE released a Christmas compilation album as a lark. Of course the album is noted for standout alternative tracks “Christmas Wrapping” and “Christmas on Riverside Drive.” Davitt Sigerson's “It's a Big Country” is a folksy little ditty that plays as a newsletter of sorts, tucked into a Christmas card. Unfortunately, some of the songs don't quite hit as hard. Suicide's “Hey, Lord” is a depressing number and Alan Vega's “No More Christmas Blues” feels like just the opposite.Synthesizer? Yep. Funk rhythms? Got ‘em. Bummer Christmas songs? For sure! So grab your record player, put “A Christmas Record,” and listen to this episode!Sounds of ChristmasFB: @SOCMusicTwitter: @SOCMusicIG: @socmusicHolly Jolly X'masuFB: @HollyJollyXmasuTwitter: @HollyJollyXmasuIG: @hollyjollyxmasuGive us a buzz! We're back for another round of our New Wave Game! The rules are simple, because the game is stupid. We're listening to the next three volumes in the Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the 80s CD series, and trying to guess each other's favorite songs. Volumes 4-6 include Flopcast favorites like the Go-Go's, Men at Work, Duran Duran, and Devo. There are also memorable one-or-two hit wonders like Soft Cell, A Flock of Seagulls, the Waitresses, and Bow Wow Wow. And then there are the acts who never really scored a hit, but still made an impression. (Yikes, Jim Carroll knew a lot of people who died...) In New Wave Game Part 1, we both failed miserably. Surely we'll do better this time, if we can only clear our brains of Toni Basil screeching about Mickey. The Flopcast website! The ESO Network! The Flopcast on Facebook! The Flopcast on Instagram! This Women's History Month, The Rose celebrates trailblazers within the breast cancer community. Waitresses and restaurant workers throughout the city struggle to access basic healthcare. As we celebrate Women's History Month, we're reminded of Dr. Lori Choi, a woman fighting for change. As the founder of I'll Have What She's Having, an organization dedicated to improving healthcare access for those in the restaurant industry, she provides unique insight as to why we need improved public policy. And how cultural differences and financial barriers can prevent individuals from receiving necessary care. This episode is a call to action to prioritize health and take steps to improve healthcare access for all women, especially those in underserved communities and challenging professions. Please consider sharing this episode with your family and friends at therose.org. Your action may save the life of an uninsured woman.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over
Secret signals on the job: Waitresses at some 19th-century restaurants ensured speedy drink service by communicating with a non-verbal code. One server took orders, then placed each customer's cup to indicate exactly what the customer wanted. A second server could then whisk right in and serve the right beverage without asking.
