Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world. In this week's episode, Niall looks at a topic he's wanted to explore for quite some time. Masculinity is a complex subject in today's world, one that is often accompanied by words like ‘toxic', ‘crisis' or ‘fragile', and that absolutely needs discussion when figures like Andrew Tate try to push a definition of what it means to ‘be a man'. Masculinity is indeed in a difficult place, but we need to look at WHY it's in this place. Niall asks why masculinity feels so lost in modern society, along with exploring his own relationship with it. However, the conversation is led in a different direction when he visits the Men's Shed in Ballybrack, Dublin. If you're unfamiliar with Men's Shed, they are community projects where men can come together, share skills and form friendships, an environment that allows for meaningful, honest and vulnerable conversations just like this one. This week we're joined by boxing legend Michael Conlan, who is currently in camp training for another headline bout a Madison Square Garden on St. Patrick's Day. A double Olympian and double Inter-Continental champion, Conlan is widely regarded as one of Ireland's greatest ever boxers. Mick chats to the lads about some of his career highlights, friendships - including how Paddy Barnes helped save Christmas, his passion for mental health advocacy and helping people, and what comes next. It was a pleasure for us to have Mick on the podcast, especially for a milestone episode like 200. We've loved the 5 years we've spent making this podcast, and we hope to continue as long as you keep listening. Thanks for listening and supporting two lads from Ballybrack who like to hear stories and laugh at each other's mistakes.
When a Spanish immigrant Fernando Nuno La Fuente starts work in Ireland, he joins a local football team in the hope of making new friends and settling in his new home. However, camaraderie and sporting achievements were put into stark context when Fernando was driving home from a Thursday night training session and suffered a fatal collision on a local road. Leinster Senior League quickly came to the club's aid but the story didn't appear to be what it first seemed. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Jumpers for Goalposts was back in the Brack this week, so we packed up our gear and went along to chat with some of the people involved. Jumpers For Goalposts (J4G) is a new volunteer-run movement that encourages men of different ages, races, backgrounds, and abilities to come together for an old-fashioned game of football using ‘jumpers for goalposts’. The idea is the brainchild of Ballybrack mental health activist Keith Kelly. It followed the success of a poem and video he created for World Mental Health Week back in 2018. She is one of the most seriously talented singers in music right now. Sigrid also happens to be one of the soundest and the coolest! There's a reason she says she is the "boss of her projects." It's a Sigrid Special on The Muireann O'Connell show. We had a ball and at one point surprised her with a call from her tiny hometown of Ålesund with Johnno from Ballybrack, Dublin who is now living in Norway! (They got chatting about Dirty Nelly's the Irish bar!) . @thisissigrid: "This is honestly the greatest thing that could ever happen in an interview" 👌ðŸ¼@MuireannO_C called up Johnno, an Irish lad from Ballybrack, who lives in Sigrid's tiny hometown of #Ålesund (#Norway). 🇳🇴🇮🇪 pic.twitter.com/DcoKJWCXwi — Today FM (@TodayFM) January 21, 2019 The Norwegian singer/songwriter popped in for a chat and session that included why she has fallen in love with her Irish fans, how she has only taken three weeks off in three years, what conditioner she uses! and why she's looking forward to her 3Arena gig. This week on the award winning WTSpod Danny & Mero had the pleasure of welcoming climate scientist, lecturer and current Chairperson of Friends of Earth Ireland, "The Verdant Yank", Dr. Cara Augustenborg. Climate change is arguably the biggest challenge facing humans in the history of our existence - and yet, there are still a number of people who dedicate time, money and energy to denying what 97% of scientists agree on.Its happening, and humans are the driving force. Climate Change is accelerating at an alarming rate with some predictions claiming that summers in the Arctic will be ice free within a few years, but sometimes the arguments can be very heavy and laden with technical talk that is mind bending. With that in mind Dr, Cara tries to simplify it all and look at the problem through the simple minds of two lads from Ballybrack that like spicebags and cans of fanta.
This week on the award winning WTSpod, Danny and Mero were joined by actor and activist John Connors. John came to the attention of the nation on the smash RTE drama "Love/Hate" as Patrick, the man who killed criminal kingpin "Nidge". More recently John featured on Irish screens as part of the documentary "I am Traveller" which focused on exploring the identity of Travellers in modern Ireland. John brings us through his life on the camp in Darndale on Dublin's north side and how he got started in acting. From losing his father to suicide aged eight to battling with mental health issues in his teens, John's story is filled with ups and downs and features some heart wrenching as well as heart warming moments. On top of this the lads talk about summer in Ballybrack, UFC 200 and Danny is going to see Britney Spears. Rate, review, subscribe and give us a share!
A special edition of What's the Story? this week as Danny & Mero head to the heart of Dublin, Ballybrack, to witness the newest generation of ass kicking kids at the very first Junior Takeover Muay Thai event. The two lads had chats with a host of kids and fighters including Evan, Ella, Tom and Maia from Warriors Gym in Dublin. Zoe, Daniel and John Walsh from Waterford Muay Thai, Aaron and Liam who only found out they were fighting each other when they sat down together with us, Shane and Shane from Celtic K1 and of course, friend of the show and the man behind the event, Cian Cowley. It was a great day which had everything from kids in their first fight to teenagers who are nearly veterans. Danny got called out by one of the kids and had to leave with a security escort, Mero is currently working on his spinning back fist technique and we learned that Disney Land in Florida is haunted... at least according to one of the kids. Big thanks to everyone involved on the day, especially Mark Merrigan who was our producer, runner, organiser, security, life coach and spotter. Don't forget to check out all our previous chapters online and on iTunes, rate, review, subscribe and let us know what you think!
In Part two of our conversation with award winning author and journalist Paul Howard, we hear his opinion on drugs in sport, the Ross O'Carroll Kelly years, his "episode" of classic TV show, "Only fools and horses" and lastly the mysterious case of Darth Vader in Ballybrack... was it the Sith Lord himself? Was it an imposter? Was it a league of Ireland footballer double jobbing? We also find out details of what's next for both Ross, and Paul as well as details of a great competition! Please rate, review and subscribe, let us know what you think!
This week Danny, Lindsey and Mero are joined by the legendary Paul Howard. A multi award winning journalist, Paul is one of the most decorated literary minds in Ireland. Creator of the Ross O'Carroll Kelly series, Paul Howard has sold over 1 million books and sold out theatres across Ireland with stage adaptations of Ross and his friends. In part one, Paul sat down with us and spoke to us about growing up in Ballybrack, Dublin. Moving to Ireland from England as young boy when Thatcher came to power, his school days in St. Laurence College and his early days in the world of journalism.
