The Where is My Mind? podcast, hosted by Bressie, has become a true gem in the realm of mindfulness and mental health podcasts. This show has a special ability to make listeners feel secure and included, no matter where they may be on the spectrum of the topics being discussed. Unlike many other podcasts, Bressie is unafraid to be vulnerable, which makes him extremely relatable. He acknowledges that nobody has everything together at all times, and this sense of acceptance is refreshing. One standout episode is "An Atlantic State of Mind" with Damian Browne, which offers an insightful and inspiring conversation. In a world that is changing so fast, this podcast serves as a breath of fresh air.
One of the best aspects of The Where is My Mind? podcast is Bressie's approach to mindfulness. His stance on this topic is refreshing because he emphasizes the importance of slowing down and taking stock of our lives. He encourages listeners to prioritize self-care and be positive influences on those around them. Additionally, the short meditations included in each episode are a valuable tool for integrating mindfulness into daily life.
While The Where is My Mind? podcast excels in many areas, it does have some room for improvement. One potential drawback is that it may not appeal to all listeners due to its specific focus on mindfulness and mental health. Those seeking podcasts with broader subject matter might not find this show as engaging or relatable. However, for individuals interested in these topics, it provides invaluable insights.
In conclusion, The Where is My Mind? podcast with Bressie offers a unique and much-needed perspective on mindfulness and mental health. Through his vulnerability and relatability as a host, Bressie creates an environment where listeners can feel secure and accepted. The episodes cover a range of thought-provoking topics and provide practical tools for integrating mindfulness into daily life. Despite some potential limitations regarding its niche focus, this podcast is a valuable resource for those seeking to enhance their well-being and understanding of the mind.
“And now, the end is near, and so I face the final curtain….”We are sad to say that we have come to the last episode of Where Is My Mind, and what a journey it has been. Hundreds of podcasts, world class guests, incredible human stories and a dedicated bunch of listeners who have supported us through it all. As we wind down the final episodes of Where Is My Mind, we couldn't go without one last visit to your favourite segment: The Therapy Room.In this special episode, Niall is joined once again by long-time friends of the podcast and two of Ireland's top psychologists, Louize Carroll and Dr. Tony Bates. Since The Therapy Room began, we've explored some of the most important themes that therapists encounter in their work — and today, Louize and Tony reflect on the biggest lessons they've learned over the years. They speak to the profound bravery in vulnerability, and the deep honour of witnessing someone step fully into themselves — beyond the weight of internal and external expectations. They also touch on the importance of balancing the individual story with the broader context, and why we need to reevaluate how we see those who are experiencing pain or deemed ‘crazy'. Louize and Tony both finish by reading passages from some of their favourite literature, and share their hope that people never give up on themselves. This episode discusses some sensitive topics, please take care when listening. The systems we live under are having such a massive impact on our collective wellbeing, but are not inevitable — they were built, and they can be unbuilt. This week, Niall Breslin sits down with someone who has been helping him make sense of the world. Pissed Magistus is a powerful cultural critic and digital creator whose work has helped countless people make sense of the modern world. Known for their ability to translate complex ideas into accessible, emotionally resonant insights, Pissed Magistus brings a unique lens to some of the most pressing issues of our time.Together, they explore the deep psychological and emotional impact of capitalism, the illusion of individualism, and the quiet crisis of meaning that so many of us are living through. Of course this conversation can't be had without examining the ever-powerful shadow that America casts on the world, and the divide-and-conquer strategies keep us disconnected. They unpack what a fairer and more humane system could look like, and why communication and imagination are essential tools for collective change. For more mindfulness content check out Niall's Patreon. https://www.patreon.com/niallbreslinFollow Niall on IG @bressie, TikTok @niallbreslin, FB @whereismymindpodcast and Twitter @nbrez and visit his website: www.niallbreslin.com.If you or someone you know is struggling emotionally or feeling hopeless, it's important to talk to someone about it now. In the modern world, being “flat out” has become a way of life—but it's leaving us burned out, disconnected, and running on empty. In this episode, Niall sits down with Dermot Whelan—TV and radio broadcaster, comedian, author, mindfulness teacher and long time friend of the podcast—to unravel Ireland's obsession with busyness and the toll it's taking on our well-being. Dermot's new book, Busy and Wrecked, explores how we've come to wear exhaustion like a badge of honor, why we struggle to slow down, and how we can break free from a system that constantly demands more. Together, he and Niall discuss the roots of Ireland's culture of busyness, the inherited stress of our history, and the guilt that comes with stepping off the treadmill. Dermot shares his own journey recovering from burnout, the practical tools that helped him shift his mindset, and how sometimes eating the metaphorical frog can help us refocus on what's really important (although we're not sure Niall's dog Stevie would agree). Many of us sat down to watch Netflix's latest drama series this week and were immensely affected by the show Adolescence. Niall was hit with some really big emotions watching the show, and sits down this week to put his cultural lens on some of the cracks in our society that he believes are having a massive impact on our young men. He reflects on the deep-rooted challenges they are facing today, from the scarcity of positive role models to the pressures of masculinity in an era of toxic leadership. It has been a tough few years for our young people, and they are existing in a time that is so drastically different from the one we grew up in. From social issues to social media, he breaks down how these forces are shaping identity, self-worth, and mental well-being, and why open dialogue and community support are more critical than ever. What if the greatest act of courage in our modern world that demands ‘yes' is simply learning how to say ‘no'?In this episode, Niall sits down with Dr. Sunita Sah, an organizational psychologist, former physician, and author of Defy, whose groundbreaking research explores the psychology of compliance, ethical resistance, and decision-making under pressure. Together, they dive into the forces that shape our willingness to conform, from the Milgram Experiment to the silent pressures in society. They discuss why saying ‘no' is one of the most powerful skills we can develop, how cultural and social conditioning make defiance so difficult, and why compliance is fueling the erosion of democracy and our response to global crises. Most importantly, Dr. Sah shares practical strategies to break free from the invisible chains of expectation and reclaim our ability to stand up for what's right. What if the wisdom we need to navigate modern life isn't ahead of us, but behind us—hidden in the land, language, and traditions of our ancestors? In this episode, Niall sits down with Manchán Magan—writer, documentary maker, and explorer of ancient cultures—to uncover the deep-rooted wisdom woven into Ireland's history. Manchán has spent years traveling the world, living with indigenous communities, and delving into the lost traditions of our own land. Together, they discuss the Irish connection to nature, the power of language in shaping our perception of the world, and what we can learn from our ancestors about living a more meaningful, connected life today. They also explore how ancient rituals, storytelling, and a simpler way of being can help us find balance in an age of constant noise. If you've ever felt the pull of something deeper—something older—this will encourage you to listen to the land, embrace stillness, and reconnect with the wisdom that has always been there, waiting. Our collective human psyche has for a long time been impacted by the happenings of the world, from politics to war and the economy. In this week's episode, Niall sits down to talk about just how much suffering we have witnessed in society and how that can leave us feeling helpless. Speaking about the work of Thich Nhat Hanh, whose work on non-violence came from the front lines of the Vietnam war, Niall explores the fear and power driving the chaos and the deep spiritual crisis it is causing in society. He shares how Thich Nhat Hanh's work can be used as a beacon of hope in these difficult times and how our personal choice to nourish life, and not destroy it, can help us feel empowered as a collective again. Niall also leads us in a Metta meditation to send peace during global turmoil. Facing the parts of ourselves we avoid—our shame, fear, and self-doubt—can sometimes bring us out of darkness and into the light. In this episode of Where Is My Mind, Niall Breslin sits down with Pat Divilly, coach, author, and breathwork facilitator, to explore the transformative power of shadow work. Pat's new book, Shadow Work, unpacks how Carl Jung's theories can help us uncover the unconscious parts of ourselves. Together, Niall and Pat explore the roots of shame in Irish history, how it has shaped our collective and personal identities, and why so many of us struggle with self-worth. Pat also shares insights from his work as a coach and breathwork facilitator, explaining how reconnecting with the body is essential for emotional healing, and the complexity and beauty of shadow work in relationships. Prescription drugs have long been relied on in all areas of healthcare, and while modern medicine can have incredible benefits, we also need to start looking at the bigger picture when it comes to our physical and mental health. In this week's episode Niall sits down with journalist and author Julia Hotz to explore a growing movement in healthcare: social prescribing. Julia's book, The Connection Cure, delves into the science, into the science and stories behind this practice, where doctors prescribe activities like art classes, community groups, and outdoor exercise to improve physical and mental well-being. Together, they discuss how our healthcare systems reached a crisis point and what changes could help us heal in a more holistic way. Julia also shares inspiring global examples of social prescribing in action and offers insights on how we can incorporate this approach into our own lives—starting with a simple question: What truly matters to you?For more mindfulness content check out Niall's Patreon. https://www.patreon.com/niallbreslinFollow Niall on IG @bressie, TikTok @niallbreslin, FB @whereismymindpodcast and Twitter @nbrez and visit his website: www.niallbreslin.com.If you or someone you know is struggling emotionally or feeling hopeless, it's important to talk to someone about it now. If you've been here a while you'll know masculinity is something we find both fascinating and necessary to talk about, and more so as the worst kind of men are finding power in society. In this week's episode, Niall is joined by Logan Cohen, a therapist, clinical supervisor and author of ‘How to (Hu)Man Up in Modern Society'. Logan believes men have lost their way in modern society, particularly as we are still stuck in the traditional roles that have not evolved to suit our current world. Through his own difficult experiences with trauma and addiction he wants to help the modern man embrace their social being and reconnect with what really matters. Niall and Logan discuss how ‘toxic' masculinity is leaking into our culture, along with how we can raise healthy boys through non-judgement, curiosity and leading by example. Having come through an intense processing of trauma and his own dark night of the soul, Robin took a chance and applied for An Garda Síochána, Ireland's police force, where his passion for suicide prevention and intervention grew. There are so many things happening in the world right now that are making us question who we are, what we're doing and, to be honest, our sanity. In this week's episode Niall is joined by Emma Kehoe, who through her own self-development journey has turned into a coach and teacher for others. Emma hit rock bottom in her early thirties, when everything she knew came crashing down around her and the realities of her early years conditioning came to the forefront. Emma shares her story of how she moved through heartbreak, vulnerability and an existential crisis, and ended up finding her love for mindfulness and a balanced approach to life. A very happy Christmas to you, from all of us here on the Where Is My Mind team! Well, that is if you're not tearing your hair out. While all the festivities, catch ups, presents and family time can be lovely, it can be a really overwhelming time of year too. Whether you've got something going on in your life like stress, grief, loneliness, Christmas is a time that can amplify all of that. This week, Niall takes you through ways to approach the chaos of Christmas. He talks through some of the biggest stressors of the ‘most wonderful time of the year' like financial trouble, emotional and social expectations, work deadlines and of course all the extra time that you'll be spending with your loved ones. Managing expectations and communication are key, along with remembering the magic Christmas can bring, but so is going gently with yourself. If the festive period is getting too much, Niall takes you on a guided meditation to come back to yourself and remember, this too shall pass. Music is one of the most powerful mediums in the world, and as we've heard from many people on this podcast, it has saved them. In this week's episode we're taking you along to one of the Where Is My Mind? Live shows. In the Mermaid Theatre in Bray Niall was joined by two long-time friends from the music industry, Kieran McGuinness and James Vincent McMorrow. The trio talk about how music has changed thanks to the never ending metrics of social media and how it's now even being tailored to our fading attention spans. They share their fears of music losing its true meaning, with all three having experienced its power in their lives and actually saving them in their darker days. Kieran has a beautiful story about how a performance with his band Delorentos connected him with his birth family, and James explains how focusing on music helped him out of the clutches of an eating disorder. Where Is My Mind is back! You might have been wondering where Niall has been over the last while but after a short hiatus and well needed break he's back to fill you in on where his mind has been. After undertaking The Rising, the launch of The Madman's Hotel and a month-long podcast tour, it's safe to say burnout was on the brink. Niall shares how he was feeling after such a busy time, all while existing in a world that feels like everything is on fire, and what he did to get himself back on track. He also shares some thoughts he's been sitting with over the last few weeks, about how our perception of normal human emotion has and continues to evolve and how stepping back from the online world can be a whole mental refresh. They kayaked Ireland's longest River Shannon, cycled 160km and climbed Ireland's highest mountain Carrauntoohil, all over 8 days to raise funds for better mental health literacy for young people. The Rising 2024 is complete and this week Niall reminisces on the journey, everything he and the team learned along the way and what it means to complete it. Although there were challenges along the way, from injuries to capsizes, and moments where they had to dig deep, we have almost reached the €200k target which will go towards developing further programmes to help our young people. How we listen to music has changed. With streaming, social media and 15 second TikTok's it's rare we listen to a full album anymore. Sometimes, though, a body of work comes along that stops you in your tracks. This week, Niall is joined by Gary Lightbody, lead singer and guitarist with Snow Patrol. The Irish band have just released their first album in 6 years, ‘The Forest Is The Path', which may be their most vulnerable record to date. The band approached this album in a different way than they have before, with the first lyrics coming to Gary while emerging from a numbness following the death of his father. Niall and Gary get into the process of making the album, along with Gary's relief to finally feel again after grief and putting it in writing. They also discuss their shared passion for mental health reform, with Gary's particular focus on the suicide rates in Northern Ireland, and how music is what saved him when he went through his own dark night of the soul. This episode discusses some sensitive topics, please take care when listening. Niall and the team are back for the second year to take on the grueling challenge of The Rising. This year consists of a kayak of the Shannon, followed by a 160 km cycle from Limerick to Carrauntoohil, and culminating in a climb up Ireland's highest peak, Carrauntoohil, totaling 393km. In this episode we hear from the incredible souls in the team and their big ‘WHY' for taking on something like this to better the future of children and young people's mental health. Some of the team are parents, some are driven by their own and their families struggles with mental health, but they all want to create change from how things were in their past. Anxiety can feel like something that is there to ruin our life, but the little alarm system going off inside us is actually incredibly important in giving us warning signals and keeping us alive. In this week's episode Niall is joined by Dr. Richard Hogan, renowned psychotherapist and clinical director of Therapy Institute. Richard's work as a family psychotherapist has given him a deep understanding of anxiety and the function it provides. From sleep to screens, environment to emotions, there are a number of potential root causes of your anxiety but understanding that it's only trying to protect can be a big step in moving forward. Niall and Richard discuss the anxiety that is being emanated in the modern world and how what we're feeling is most likely a very human response. They also look how children are growing up more anxious with a lack of resilience and a fear of growing up. We've talked a lot about connection and relationships recently on the podcast, but they are at the beating heart of our very being. In this episode Niall is joined by our very own Louize Carroll of The Therapy Room, to dive deeper into how relationships mould and mirror our psychology. Louize has a deep passion for understanding how we relate to each other and how that impacts our own inner world. She has created a 12 week programme that helps individuals heal wounds, master triggers and transform relationships. Niall and Louize get into the core of healthy attachments, looking at the three vital ingredients of self worth, communication and vulnerability and how our past experiences can make it difficult to break down the walls and achieve those. They also look at love in the modern world with the influence of reality TV, porn and the trend of trying to diagnose each others attachment styles, and how damaging this external noise can be. We now have solid evidence that social connection is vital to our wellbeing and as crucial to our health as our diet and exercise. So is our modern divided world making us sick? In this week's episode Niall is joined by David Robson, science journalist and author of ‘The Laws of Connection'. We are living in times of great tension that is only exacerbated by our reliance on social media. Unfortunately, this is pushing us further and further away from each other, creating a deficit in our most basic needs as social beings. In his new book, David Robson explains the psychological barriers that are preventing us from forming strong and meaningful connections, along with strategies to overcome our social awkwardness. Niall and David discuss how connection feels really lost in the world right now, along with how algorithms are driving us apart. They also discuss how powerful connection can be in changing the course of our lives and the ways we can push ourselves outside of our comfort zone to begin building a more connected existence. What follows is an incredible journey to understand her pain, coming back from the brink of death and turning it all around to help others process their trauma in life. Rachel shares her incredible story, along with her passion for the power of community and alternative therapies and shows us what the true meaning of resilience is. In the head-melty chaos of the modern world, sometimes all we need is to get through the next five minutes. In this week's episode, Niall is joined by author James Parker, whose new book ‘Get Me Through the Next Five Minutes: Odes to Being Alive' is a dedication to finding gratitude in unexpected places. As the unofficial “gratitude correspondent” for the Atlantic, James' often hilarious odes range from moments of self-discovery to life-changing music to mundane everyday things. The sheer amount of information we are exposed to and are absorbing everyday is beyond overwhelming, and in a media landscape now flooded with misinformation and disinformation it can be difficult to decipher what's real. Niall is joined by Steven Brill, journalist and author whose latest book ‘The Death Of Truth' looks at how social media has given snake oil salesmen and demagogues the power to destroy trust and polarise our society. Steven is also co-founder of NewsGuard, which rates the reliability of news and information websites. Niall and Steven discuss the danger of fake news on our personal wellbeing and wider society, how powerful entities are manipulating the truth and how our world leaders are giving them more ammunition to plant seeds of doubt. They also discuss the anarchy we're seeing emerge in Ireland, driven by far-right manipulation, and how important good information, media literacy and good communication are going to be in rebuilding the trust within our society. As humans we are subject to so much external and internal pressure to achieve, do, strive for more in our lives and in ourselves. It can feel like a never ending mountain to climb. In this week's episode Niall is joined by Dr. Clodagh Campbell, better known as The Wellness Psychologist, who works with a lot of ‘over-achievers' to help them accept where they are at and calm the chaos within. Clodagh's own experience as an adopted person inspired her to hold space for those who feel lonely in their stories and in their pain. Niall and Clodagh discuss the culture that is making us all feel less-than, impacting our self-worth and how that can feel in the body. Clodagh shares how this shows up in the therapy room with her clients and the ways she helps them define the function and the cost of their actions, reestablish their values and feel the very important emotions we're so often distracted from. Relationships are at the core of our very being. How we relate to others can tell us a lot about ourselves and act as a window into our past. In this week's episode Niall is joined by Todd Baratz, renowned psychotherapist and sex therapist. Todd has just released his book ‘How to Love Someone Without Losing Your Mind' which is a brutally honest guide about modern relationships and the culture which they exist in. Niall and Todd discuss how societal norms, both past and present, are living in our relationships and the ways we can better show up for our partners to break the patterns of history. Todd is not a self-help guru, but explains how he guides his clients to approach relationships with curiosity and compassion because no one partnership is the same, and no one is going to save you. As we begin to better understand the immense impact that trauma and environment have on our psyche and body we need to develop new pathways to healing. In today's episode, Niall is sharing a very exclusive discussion with world-renowned trauma expert and physician, Dr. Gabor Maté. Niall recently took part in a panel with Dr. Maté, along with Tammy Darcy, Founder of the Shone Project and Brent Pope, former rugby player and mental health advocate. Hosted by Claire McKenna, the panel discussed the current state of mental health in Ireland, along with solutions to change our toxic culture and create healing in society. Dr. Maté's new book ‘The Myth Of Normal' is a groundbreaking investigation into the causes of illness, a bracing critique of how our society breeds disease, and a pathway to health and healing. Mindfulness and music are two things Niall is incredibly passionate about, and a combination of both can be an easy and accessible way for people to create their own practice. Today, Niall is joined by Niamh McCarthy, the creator of Mindful Nation, an app that connects meditation and music from some of the world's biggest producers and DJs. Having spent her early career touring with Madonna and U2, the gruelling lifestyle took its toll on Niamh and she ended up in hospital with burnout and an array of illnesses. From the guidance of her doctor and a good boss she discovered breathwork and studied under Deepak Chopra, which eventually led her to sharing what she's learned with others. Niall and Niamh discuss their shared love for the power of music in meditation, the unnatural ways we're all living that are causing us to struggle and why taking just a few minutes a day to practice mindfulness can help you reconnect with yourself and your powerful intuition. One of the most powerful supports for our wellbeing is community, a shared sense of humanity that can really nourish the soul. In this week's episode, Niall is joined by Meggan Roxanne, writer, poet, digital artist and entrepreneur. Meggan is the face behind The Good Co, and the 24 million strong Instagram account The Good Quote. When faced with her own mental health crisis Meggan began sharing quotes from songs, writers and herself online and quickly built a community that made her feel less alone in her struggles. Having mostly been anonymous in her sharing until now, Meggan is releasing her debut book ‘How To Stop Breaking Your Own Heart' which is a memoir of her incredible journey, from growing up in a battleground of abuse, dropping out of university, losing her mother, who single-handedly raised her, to creating The Good Quote. Niall and Meggan discuss her inherent drive to be a rebel and a disruptor, the comfort in seeing your pain in someone else's words and how community connects us to something bigger, as well as back to ourselves. Meggan also shares her fear of revealing herself online following the hate and racism she has experienced, but why it's all for the greater good of freeing herself and remembering her Mum. Rory is a candidate for the European Parliament Elections in 2024, under the Social Democrats party in Midlands-North West. Having spent most of his career working on housing, economic inequality, poverty, fiscal policy, public services, and European social policy, Rory decided to run for the elections to try and have his voice heard once and for all. Niall and Rory discuss the dire state of housing and public services in Ireland, how that's having an immense impact on our collective mental health and sense of being and why politicians need to move away from neoliberal ideas to bring a sense of community and belonging back to the people. Mental health experiences can be deeply personal, but we need to look for the solutions at a political level. Mental health is connected to capitalism and social issues and we need change in these areas to see change in ourselves. In this episode, Niall is joined by Micha Frazer-Carroll, an award-winning journalist, culture commentator and author of ‘Mad World: The Politics of Mental Health'. Having grown up with mental health issues all around her, Micha is passionate about changing the narrative on how we understand and treat issues that are deep-rooted in our culture. Her work is a disruptive and hopeful approach to our current concepts around mental health. Niall and Micha discuss how mental health has been determined throughout history and how our health is often decided upon our ‘ability' to perform under capitalist constructs. They also discuss pros and cons of mental health diagnosis and what a progressive, human-led system should look like. Mental health stereotypes can often show the experience in just one way, debilitating, unable to get out of bed or function. Although this can be the case for some, there are many of us battling our minds while living a fully-functioning life. In this episode, Niall is joined by Dr. Lalitaa Suglani, a psychologist and author of ‘High-Functioning Anxiety'. Lalitaa coined the term after experiencing this herself, along with seeing her patients appear accomplished and successful on the outside, while dealing with something entirely different on the inside. Niall and Lalitaa discuss how anxiety can sometimes be confused with high-achieving, and how it can lead to a life caught on the hamster wheel of success. Lalitaa shares the two sides to high-functioning anxiety and the damage that ‘masking' can have on our wellbeing, as well as some practices to help you navigate your way around anxious thoughts. As we pursue the radical reimagining of Ireland, and the world's, mental health frameworks, we must be open minded to new ideas and treatment models. In this episode, Niall is joined by Dr. Jessica Schleider, Founding Director of the Lab for Scalable Mental Health and author of ‘Little Treatments, Big Effects'. Jessica's mission is to create evidence-based solutions that bridge previously-unfillable gaps in mental health ecosystems. Based on research that most people seeking support will only attend one session, she has developed a ‘Single Session Intervention' model for young people to ensure that one interaction counts. Niall and Jessica discuss the content of these single session solutions and how they can provide support that differs from traditional therapy and psychiatry. They also enforce their shared belief that showing people their own strengths and encouraging self-compassion can create a fantastic foundation for dealing with suffering and the complexities of growing minds. As some of you may know, we're on tour with the podcast across Ireland. It's been great to get out and meet some of you guys, to share space with you and of course our incredible guest interviews. Today, we thought we'd share one of our live interviews with a long-time friend of Niall's, Danny O'Reilly, front man of The Coronas. Niall and Danny have come up through the music industry together over the last 15 years and share some of their stories from ‘the good old days' before 15 second TikTok songs and streaming. Danny also shares how proud he is of the longevity of the band, why he's grown to love his alone time in Dingle with his dog and what it was like growing up in a musical dynasty and having Mary Black as his Mam. You'll also hear a very special performance from Niall and Danny. We have spoken many times on the podcast about masculinity, something that has come under constant scrutiny in recent years as men try to navigate the problems, struggles and strengths of their being. As masculinity is being redefined, how can we raise young men in a supportive, encouraging manner so they can thrive? Niall is joined by Jordan Conroy, Olympic athlete, Rugby 7s player and host of new RTE show 'Man Up'. Jordan has spent time working with young men from all different backgrounds and interests, mentoring them and listening to their issues they're facing in the modern world. Niall and Jordan discuss how these struggles differ to what they experienced growing up with the influence of social media and other expectations with their sexuality, body image and success. Both men share what advice they would give to their younger selves and their hopes for the young men who will shape our future. As we dive deeper into the social structures around mental health it is becoming abundantly clear that we need to find a new approach to treating people. In this episode, Niall is joined by Robert Whitaker, a medical journalist, author and founder of Mad In America. Robert has dedicated his career to turning a critical lens on the work of psychiatry, debunking the claims of chemical imbalances and miracle treatments and tracing back the unimaginable history that still casts a shadow of stigma on mental health today. Niall and Robert discuss the questionable science that backs up psychiatry, how it was used to control those considered unfit or different and the reason it still holds so much power in our treatment models. They also put forward a case for the paradigm shift needed to ensure people have informed consent and a true understanding of the root of their symptoms, moving away from the ‘broken brain' theories and examining the social, political and environmental factors at play. This episode discusses some difficult subjects, please take care when listening.
