Episode 33 features an interview where we learn a little more why Winnipeg Transit can't solve the violence and disorder plaguing routes, and how City Council and the police are responsible to solve the problem. Part 1- What happened at the Public Hearing on Tuesday? Marty Gold touches briefly on what he told City Council about opening up 'Malls and Corridors' for residential housing buiilds - and what it took to even get registered to speak- in the first segment and in his Sun column today: City Hall Roadblocks Discourage Public Participation At Marathon Meeting . 4.00- A Transit supervisor barely escaped an attack with an improvised 'flamethrower' at Graham and Fort on Friday. The perp had been sleeping on the bus for a couple of hours until being roused that morning. Combined with the assault and robbery of a 21 year old girl getting off a bus in Windsor Park, there's no question that even being near Transit is a dangerous proposition- and that undermines the concept that new tenants on Malls and Corridors will risk taking a bus. (Editor's note- as this episode was in post-production yet another incident involving a machete-wielding man in a bus shelter and police occured at Unicity plaza.) 14.20 Part 2- Once upon a time, before his outsider run for Mayor, Don Woodstock worked as a Transit driver. Earlier in November, he spoke with TGCTS about ways to improve overall bus safety and efficiency. - "Management has no interest or desire to make sure they have a workforce like it was 20 years ago" - "If you can't keep your staff, that's an indication that something is wrong." To send story tips & comments, or to contribute support to Season 5 costs via E-Transfer - Email martygoldlive@gmail.com - Even if MPI doesn't find an Operator at fault for an accident, Transit management can disregard it and penalize an employee. - Don explains the 'white card' system that blames drivers for almost anything. - If new police hires replace the role of Supervisors in incident responses, those supervisors can put on their blue shirt and get back behind the wheel. "We have a system bloated in bureaucracy." 27.20 - "Let us put plainclothes officers in the bus in designated routes that we know we have problems." - "The police top brass need to find away to interject the junior officers, supervisors ultimately stiil have to call police anyway." 31.00 - "They have done nothing to assure the general public they are going to be safe." 35.15 Part 3 - A Rally for Public Safety is being hosted by ATU from 10.30 to Noon on Tuesday at City Hall, 510 Main Street. "We want to encourage riders who have felt unsafe to participate at the rally." Marty will be covering the rally for the Sun. - A preview of upcoming topics heading into the New Year, including Manitoba Hydro wind farms, city hall 'integrity', and more in-depth interviews! "It's definitely something we are concerned about.” With three 14 year olds, two 15 year olds, and a 16 year old to face charges in the murder of 27 year old Peter Filip outside a Logan Avenue beer vendor on Remembrance Day, his mother showed no hesitation in putting blame where it belonged: “Parents have to be responsible for that, and who are the parents?” she said. It was shocking the media reported it, daring to air a view that didn't blame "colonialism", "capitalism" "root causes" or other far-fetched explanations for why 6 kids were roaming the streets looking for victims at 2 AM. Marty Gold explains the trail of one death, 4 assaults, a sawed-off shotgun, and a barely-failed carjacking that proves soft-on-criminals legislation needs to be abolished. When will it be replaced with true deterrence and protection of the public from the outbursts of psychopathic teenagers. His accused killer, like the accused in another recent homicide, continued to rack up charges in the year after convictions for violent crimes but were not locked up. And they weren't the only ones exhibiting the catch-and-release pattern. Before carjacker Ricardo Gomes fired a shot at a driver on Corydon who resisted, he also had priors. The drug addict was convicted of almost choking out a cop in front of her son, biting another and then got into it with a third. He skipped court. He had insisted to Judge Don Slough “I don't want to be one of those people who are coming in and out of jail all my life.” But that's what he's become. - The bizarre hostage-taking of four in West Broadway ended with police shooting a 52 year old man. He was a suspect in the death of a BC trucker who was found in the Manitoba Housing building at 25 Furby after going missing. The mystery started with the truck of Farah Mohamud being found on the parking lot of the Sherbrook Hotel 2 blocks away- where. listeners are reminded, the Langside mass murder case in November also had a connection. - Marty explains, the system is falling apart, and does the math of how the 40+ homicide cases with so many defendants can result in more court trials than Wab Kinew's justice department can manage. He ran on the premise of being tough on crime- but his commitment may be overtaken by demands from his far-left hug-a-thug cabinet and a strained budget. Our latest election interview covers lots of ground, from issues being heard on the doorstep in Southdale to another candidate picking an issue with our guest! Robert-Falcon Ouellette has always been an articulate and engaging guest with TGCTS and our City Circus Shaw TV series. His career includes two Top-4 finishes in Winnipeg Mayoral elections, sandwiching a busy term as an inner-city Liberal MP. Now he's trying to come up the middle in a swing suburban riding between Health Minister Audrey Gordon and an NDP staffer running with an alleged chip on her shoulder that you'll want to hear about.  Liberal seats in the last House were held by Lamont, Dr. Jon Gerrard and Cindy Lamoureux, and Ouellette thinks if they succeed and are joined by another member like him to attain Party status, it could make a big difference in the Legislature. You can sponsor podcasts /donate by email/or send along story tips: Email martygoldlive@gmail.com 8:04 -  RFO talks about health care, and has logical insights into voters being incredulous towards NDP leader Wab Kinew's promise to get 3 ER's up and running without having staffing and training solutions; at the same time, he says, there's a lot of dissatisfaction with the PC government, and with the incumbent MLA's work as Health Minister. 13.40 - Hear about the ripple effects of addictions, crime and homelessness on Windsor Park - with an unbelievable number of houses on one street hit by break-ins! He casts a critical eye at EndHomelessness Winnipeg missing its target. One of the results: "It's not normal to live in a Canadian city where you refuse to go downtown because you're afraid." He calls for better medical and mental health services including providing structured day-to-day activities for the patients-and mentions a favorite subject of rail relocation! 19.00 - RFO brings up NDP candidates living far outside their ridings and our report What's In A Name? Ask Nahanni Fontaine. "I think it's great to go to these protests but sometimes it's about doing those (helping residents) things really well, " calling it "the basic work" of an elected public servant. 20.50- Hear RFO's opinion about Wab Kinew's avoidance of restorative justice for his past altercations. Ouellette goes against the progressive radical image of FN politicians. "Institutions are actually what keeps society together! ... you ignore them to your detriment" citing Winnipeg religious institutions "doing the hard work" of feeding and sheltering the indigent, but not getting support from Christian-bashers like Fontaine. "Anger doesn't get you very far." 22.20 - RFO describes how Renee Cable interrupted her NDP canvassing to confront Ouellette: "Why are you running here? You're going to be splitting the vote." "She said I should have called her to talk to her before I ran as if I need to request her permission to put forward different ideas." He told Cable, "It seems like my very existence is disturbing to you" - and shaking with anger, she started to make it personal about RFO's kids. He says that in the NDP, some people believe they are owed something. He addresses the bigger issues about intimidation and partisan politics in Manitoba- "are we allowed to say anything we want?" In RFO's view, "The big parties aren't very creative with their policies, they don't work very hard and they've repeated a lot of the same mistakes" and "people voting in fear" need Liberal MLAs to provide balance. He cites a lot of factors that are driving down voter turnout and hurt the health of our democracy. 33:07- Marty Gold previews upcoming episodes, including a tip about a bureaucratic cause of ER overcrowding, and a series on inner-city housing, the homeless, and political failures. In Episode 28, we look at how a city councilor was schooled by outraged transit users, and then at the polls that the Manitoba NDP fears. With the snow melted off of city sidewalks, St. Boniface councilor Matt Allard had to find a new topic to flog. It's actually not 'new', because Allard has simply returned to his one of his 'urban visionary' pillars, public transit. In a social media posting on Thursday he managed to restrain himself from the kind of climate doomsday hysteria he hectors fellow councilors about in policy debates, and stuck to the basics. I take a bus from Windsor Park a lot, he said, and here's how I do it, and here's what I think needs to be be improved. Unfortunately, he also insulted the intelligence of just about everyone else in the community with this head-splitter: "... despite all of these advantages, many Winnipeggers don't take the bus because they don't feel safe. The bus is a public space and like other public spaces there are safety risks. There are also safety risks when travelling by car, so much so that Manitoba Public Insurance started the Save the 100 campaign, a campaign that points out the 100 people a year that lose their lives in traffic collisions. Once on the bus, chances of fatality are almost nil." Marty compiled the heated reaction to Allard's dismissive attitude from Facebook and Twitter respondents, and from a few loyal listeners who swiftly sent in their own observations. Among the highlights: "This has got to be the dumbest comparison I have ever heard." "Are people getting knifed and seeing their children beaten in their own cars?" "The last time I was on the bus, someone went unhinged and started screaming like crazy. My kid still talks about that. Not worth it. " ** Help support our independent community reporting via paypal.com/paypalme/MartyGoldMedia ** Allard seems unable to grasp the obvious reasons why Winnipeg Transit is failing, but one user gave him a helpful summary - "Fares are high; Buses are off schedule constantly; Many lines come so infrequently that they can add hours to your ride; Peggo is slow to the point of uselessness." Hear how one woman coincidentally had tested his idea to reduce her private vehicle use - and how far short that experience fell from his utopian vision. A few of the comments came from transit users in Allard's own ward, where criticisms abound about poor service near St. Boniface Hospital, fare-jumpers, and filthy bus shelters commandeered by homeless addicts. This segment reviews a laundry list of shortcomings and failures, from scheduling to routing to no service on Sundays like it's the 1950's. That's aside from riders having to watch out for used needles and machetes. It was also pointed out the absurdity of Allard's suggestions for a new app and other changes, when the entire rider experience collapsed on his watch as Public Works chair. Lastly, a former transit operator of almost 4 decades dumped on the toxic management of Transit and spilled the beans: "There is no safety on a bus." This a startling example of how hard-left ideology among our elected officials is detached from the everyday ramificiations of their failed policies for working class voters- and for bus drivers too. 31:14 - Part 2 - While the headlines blare "Manitoba NDP continues to lead Tories", the devil is in the details. Listen to the polling numbers and the way the margin between the opposition and a provincial government facing "overwhelming dissatisfaction" (according to an Angus Reid poll) has shrunk by over 66%, from 18 points to only 5 now. With the Liberals fading fast, Marty explains how a German word about chess tactics comes into play as Wab Kinew and Heather Stefanson enter the election period facing a sceptical electorate. Laura interviews Diana Parkes, Joanna's mother and Hetti Nanton, Joanna's best friend and chair of the national domestic violence charity, Refuge. Joanna Simpson was brutally killed on October 31, 2010, by her ex-husband Robert Brown a British Airways pilot, one week before their divorce would be finalized at the High Court. Brown dropped the two children home. He took a claw hammer with him and bludgeoned Jo to death, hitting her at least 14 times. At Brown's trial, the court heard how he bundled the children into his car and wrapped Jo's body in plastic sheeting he had brought with him along with a white overall suit. He placed her in the boot before driving to Windsor Park where he had already dug a grave and put down a makeshift coffin.  After nearly 15 hours of deliberation, the jury cleared Brown of murder. He was convicted for manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility and sentenced to 26 years, the maximum sentence allowed. He will be released after serving just 13 years in 2023. Listen as we discuss the case, the events leading up to Jo being brutally killed, the details about how Jo was killed and what happened afterwards in terms of Brown's post offence behaviour and the trial.  We discuss the prosecution's case and how the family were treated both inside and outside court.  Laura also shares critical insight about the case and Brown's mindset, which she has seen repeatedly amongst men who kill their former or current partners. This insight is essential if we are to prevent murders in slow motion like Jo's and effectively prosecute men like Brown. Trigger warning: This case is upsetting, and it may be triggering. It's no surprise that we love our planet. We love nature, and we want to protect it! Today's episode teaches us how to lessen our impact on the environment through recycling and compost. Michelle Dias, an expert in the two, teaches us what the three R's should REALLY be, (with a C mixed in there)!    The Three R's:  REDUCE (as much as possible, first)  Then REUSE,   And if you can't do either of those, RECYCLE (recycling does require a lot of energy, so put YOUR energy into the first two!).    Michelle Dias, born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, studied Biology at the University of Calgary. She now works for the Waste & Recycling Services at the City of Calgary. She has been a naturalist and environmental educator for over 20 years, and has always felt curious and inspired by nature.    Fun Fact: Michelle did a blended program with her two children for school, which included home school, as well as outdoor school. It's called Windsor Park.     Some of the information below will be Calgary, AB specific, so please check the rules for the recycling and composting programs in your municipality.     REDUCE:  Try products with less packaging, like laundry detergent strips, or bar shampoo and conditioner  Remove purely recyclable items from your kitchen, such as Ziploc bags, and use reusable jars or bags instead    REUSE:  Get things second-hand  Reuse items like jam jars and other containers!    RECYCLE:  The three categories of recycling are: Containers (plastic, tin, glass…think kitchen and bathroom packaging), paper, plastic bags  Loose bags do not belong in the blue cart. Plastic bags should be stretchy material and bundled all in one, so they do not fly away at the facility. Crinkly plastic bags, like pasta bags are not collected  Household items like toy trucks, shoes, and toothbrushes are not for the blue cart (when recycling, think about packaging over items)  Black plastic can be a challenge to recycle in some systems, because of black conveyer belts camouflaging the items and the scanners not recognizing them    Recycling metal, glass, and paper is way more valuable than recycling plastic (although, we should still recycle plastic that can be recycled...or reduce it in the first place!)  Rule of thumb: anything smaller than your hand cannot be recycled. For example, Starbucks lids or to-go sauce containers. However, if recycled at the locations you received them, they usually have a program to recycle!    COMPOST:  [In Calgary, specifically] no food packaging and plastic can be composted, even if it says compostable (remember, it also takes a lot of resources to make compostable containers)  Some offices or festivals have their own compostable systems that can handle compostable containers  Food and yard scraps can be composted    *Terra Cycle is a company that recycles old items like toothpaste and other mixed material items. Michelle thinks it's worth looking at the energy spent on shipping one item at a time; we don't want to negate the benefit.*  https://www.terracycle.com/en-CA/    City of Calgary Waste and Recycling: https://www.calgary.ca/uep/wrs/waste-and-recycling-services.html    Library programs: https://calgarylibrary.ca/events-and-programs/programs/talking-trash-with-waste-and-recycling/    Virtual KWE Planet Cleanup: https://kidswhoexplore.com/events/virtual-kids-who-explore-planet-cleanup/    Check out KWE's #patch4apurpose to support 1, or all 8, charities: https://kidswhoexplore.com/product/original-explorer-patch4apurpose/  Production: @kpmediaproductions.
