The Black Donnellys were an Irish family looking for a new start across the Atlantic Ocean in the early 1840s. James and Johannah Donnelly had lived in poverty and strife and they hoped that Canada would bring a new start for their little family. So they packed up what little they had, along with their son James, Jr., and migrated to Forest City, Canada from Tipperary, Ireland.  They would find a new life in this new world, but they would not gain it in the right way. They would take what was not theirs and this would lead to strife for their family. It would eventually lead to a lot of death as well. And now spirits roam the former Donnelly homestead. Toronto Acoustic-Punk rockers, Public Messdeliver a 5-song EP that defines the genre.  “Too Many Ghosts”, the debut EP from Toronto's newest group, Public Mess, features Cactus Vella on Acoustic Guitar and Vocals, Rob Fiasco on Acoustic Bass, and Andrew Heule on Drums.  Public Mess blends acoustic-punk with hints of alt-country. Their debut EP was recorded at Sandy Pockets Studio. A DIY recording studio located in the garage of Vella's cottage. Mastered by Jon Drew, and released on Anxiety Attack Recordings, “Too Many Ghosts” clocks in at just under 18-minutes long and leaves you wanting more. The EP also features a cover of “Objector” by the legendary Blundermen. A Toronto-based punk band from the early 1990's.  The songs on “Too Many Ghosts” deal with topics such as Life and death, as in the case with the opening track "They Bring Me Woes", as well as "Never Get Sober", a song Vella wrote about an old friend and former bandmate who passed away last year. On "The Tide", Cactus sings about living fast, being left for dead, and just barely surviving. The EP closes with "Leaving Parkdale". A love letter to their favorite neighborhood in Toronto. At one point all 3 band members lived in the south-west Toronto neighborhood. These days, only Robstill remains there. Cactus Vella has been playing in the Southern Ontario music scene since the mid 90's, both in bands, as well as a solo musician. He's recorded and toured with such bands as Sinkin' Ships, The Class Assassins, Plan 37, and Whiskey Hearts, to name a few. Cactus, and his label Anxiety Attack Recordings also brought us the acoustic tribute to Rancid from a few couple of years ago. Rob Fiasco, attended high school with Cactus, and the two friends have always wanted to play in a band together. Rob has also been at it for years with bands like Blank Stare, The Donnellys, and currently also playing with indie rockers Centraal. Andrew Huele, who taught himself to play drums as a kid from a VHS tape, also plays in Stillwaves, as well as creates psychedelic electronic music under the moniker Howlin' Heule.  “Too Many Ghosts” will be available on all streaming services on Monday July 31st. As well, a limited run of cassette tapes will be available.  Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/public_mess YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@PublicMess This episode is brought to you byGo to BETTERHELP.com/apologue for confidential online counselling.use the code word Apologue for a 7 day free trial Pledge monthly with Patreon https://www.patreon.com/apologueShop Apologue products at http://apologue.ca/shop Go get the 1 hour mini Documentary on Lowest of the Low's Classic Album Shakespeare my Butt at https://thelowdoc.gumroad.com/l/SMB

The deadly fight between Patrick Farrell and James Donnelly on 27th June 1857 kickstarted one of the longest-lasting and most violent feuds in Canadian history. The property the Donnellys had been squatting on had been previously leased by Farrell. A judge had ruled that the lot be split 50/50, but, at a barn raising bee, Donnelly chucked a handspike at Farrell, who died two days later. Decades later, the Donnelly family's homestead was attacked by a vigilante mob, leaving five of their family dead. In this episode Arion, Rebecca and Olly ask why nobody was convicted of the murders, despite two trials and a reliable eyewitness; reveal why the Donnelleys became known locally as the ‘black' Donnelleys, a nickname which persists to this day; and unearth, amongst one of their number, a surprising predilection for poetry… Further Reading: • ‘History | Lucan Museum' (donnellymuseum.com): https://www.donnellymuseum.com/history • ‘Black Donnellys - The Outrageous Tale of Canada's Deadliest Feud, By Nate Hendley' (Formac Publishing Company Limited, 2018): https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/Black_Donnellys/sK5jDwAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=0 • ‘The Doomed Donnellys of Ontario' (TVO Today, 2020): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jqqfg3PND7o #Canada #Irish #Crime #1800s Love the show? In this exceptional birthday gift episode (dedicated to my incredible Mother), I delve into a story of intense vigilante justice amidst Canada's settlers. This is the account of the brutal massacre endured by the Black Donnellys of Biddulph, Ontario during the 19th century. The Black Donnellys, an immigrant family hailing from Ireland, gained notoriety due to allegations of their involvement in crimes and acts of violence. Eventually, they became victims themselves when the local townspeople subjected them to a savage lynching. Their narrative encompasses rural conflicts, strained community relations, vendettas rooted in religious differences, and a heartbreaking conclusion. Originally from County Tipperary, Ireland, the Donnelly family settled in the rural township of Biddulph Ontario in the mid-19th century. James and Johannah Donnelly, along with their five children—James Jr., William, Bridget, Robert, and Thomas—established a farm and integrated into the local community. However, tensions between the Donnellys and their neighbors gradually intensified. The Donnellys were viewed by many as squatters, outsiders, and criminals. The local animosity was fueled by their perceived audacious conduct and alleged involvement in numerous petty crimes. Furthermore, the religious and cultural divide between the Donnellys, who were of Irish Catholic descent, and their Protestant counterparts in the area added another layer of complexity, reviving age-old rivalries from England. Happy Birthday Mom! May this bring an extra touch of joy to your day. In episode 10, we discuss famous hauntings in two plantations.  Lore developed around these plantations for several reasons.  One of these was to help bring in tourists, but the other - was that historically lore that surrounds plantations is many times altered to emphasize the horrors of slavery.  In the story you will hear today, these don’t apply.  The case you will hear actually happened the way it is presented.  It wasn’t exaggerated to bring in tourists, but is a case of extreme hatred that was targeted at one family, corruption at the highest levels, and a community that had the taste for blood.     Welcome to Bonus Episode 14…The Black Donnellys We got merch! I made my first visit to Ri Ra Irish Pub in the Shoppes At Mandalay Bay back in June 2019 and reviewed the experience on Episode #24 of the podcast.  As I described it at the time, everything about Ri Ra was "authentically Irish".  Sitting in this pub in a mall in Las Vegas felt exactly like sitting in the pub in Dublin - and a lot of things helped contribute to that...from the food, to the drinks, to the staff, to the music. And that's where the people joining me for this episode of the podcast come into play. My special guests are Dave Rooney and Dave Browne of The Black Donnellys.  They're the resident house band at Ri Ra in Mandalay Bay. I talked to the guys about growing up in Dublin & the band's origins in Ireland, how and why they made the move to Las Vegas, their various Guinness World Records and their brand new documentary film An Irish Story: This Is My Home. Of course we also talked about the COVID-19 pandemic and how they've been keeping busy through the Vegas shut-down. If you want to learn more about Dave & Dave and the Black Donnellys, visit their official website - which includes info on where you can watch An Irish Story: This Is My Home.  Also make sure to follow the band on Instagram and Facebook - where they've been performing live shows. And if you want to learn more about the tragic real-life story of The "Black" Donnellys - from which the band took their name - check out the website,  Heaven & Hell on Earth - The Massacre of The "Black" Donnellys.   On the site, you can read all about the family, the murders and the aftermath - including the TWO trials that followed - as well as look through archival evidence from the events.

Gene is newly widowed and haunted by his memories. As he bumbles through long days, he questions his wife Maida’s sudden death, his daughter’s motives, and the enduring and meaningful friendship of best friends Ed and Gayle Donnelly. He tries to resurrect the good memories of the two couples raising children in a New Hampshire town and vacationing together every summer at a lake house owned by the Donnellys. He tried to come to terms about his relationship with his only daughter, Dary, who has chosen to raise a fatherless child, has made her home on the other side of the country, and who challenges Gene’s happy memories of everything that happened in their lives. She even challenges his view of her mother. Moving between Gene’s fraught current life and memories of his childhood, coming of age, courtship, marriage, and career, The Dependents (Back Bay Books, 2019) is a sensitive novel about love, parenthood, friendship, and finding contentment. The Donnellys were a family of Irish immigrants who moved to Canada and became outlaws in the 1800s. Carter and Wenndy investigate the family and the volatile relationships they had with their neighbors in rural Ontario. These ongoing feuds may have led the town to turn a blind eye to the "The Black Donnelly Massacre."

Aaron Huggett and the Black Donnellys by J.D.

Points of View with Jillian Keiley

The ghosts of the Donnellys return to tell their side of things. A raucous, wall-of-sound rock opera, Vigilante tells the explosive true tale of a ruthless Irish immigrant family and an entire town bent on revenge. Based on the unsolved 1880 massacre of Ontario's notorious Donnelly family, Vigilante is a stomping, swaggering and compulsively watchable story about frontier justice. This outlaw offspring of Sweeney Todd and The Threepenny Opera walks the razor's edge – aggressively inventive, visually stunning and absolutely electrifying. Vigilante marks the return of Edmonton's astonishing Catalyst Theatre (Nevermore), following major tours to London and New York. “I saw this piece twice: once in Fort McMurray, and again in Edmonton after Catalyst had returned from the off-Broadway run of their original production Nevermore. I loved both iterations but the steampunk style and pulsing fury of the music was deep in my bones by the second viewing. Now to see it again will satisfy a craving that I've had ever since.” – Jillian Keiley, Artistic director, NAC English Theatre “History — Canadian history! — doesn't just rock, it comes at you with an aggressive and explosive energy in the thrilling new rock ‘musical' from Catalyst Theatre.” - THE EDMONTON JOURNAL

We start off the show talking about Harry Potter and how she got into the series.  We hit on characters we like, favorite books and characters that we felt are overrated. Aurora and I then discuss at length the "Riordanverse" with the Percy Jackson series.  We talk about how she got into it and which of the series she likes the best.  We also discuss The Kane Chronicles, Magnus Chase and the newly released Trials of Apollo book. She then hits me with two book series recommendations.  The first is by Scott Westerfeld and it is the Leviathan series.  The second is The Elemental Trilogy by Sherry Thomas.  She explains the backgrounds behind both books and why she recommends them. Lastly, she talks to me about a tv show that aired in 2007 that she recommends watching - at least the pilot, called The Black Donnellys.
