Today I am joined on the podcast by Mr Billy Fitzgerald!Formerly the lead singer with Dublin pop-rockers The Dead Flags, Billy has been plying his solo trade around Ireland for the past few years, patiently building an audience with his earworm songs and hilarious online videos. And now with the release of his debut album, Billy is poised for greater attention. He released his debut album, 'A Grand Romantic Gesture', on February 20th which will serve as the primary focus of this episode. We'll be talking about the album's writing process, the instrumentations, mastering the album in Abbey Road and directing the extremely fun and creative music videos. His songs relate touching tales of failed romance through upbeat melodies and ultra-catchy choruses, delivered with soaring falsetto vocals and a wry sense of lyrical humour. Billy describes his music as “songs about heartbreak that make you want to dance”.Mr Billy Fitzgerald is playing Whelans tonight! It should be a fantastic show so make sure to grab a ticket.Mr Billy Fitzgerald on BandcampMr Billy Fitzgerald playing Whelans Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

What a pleasure, what lark! Talking to Barbara Scully about becoming more ourselves, knowing the privilege of ageing, cultivating a habit of gratitude, and making decisions on our own attitude... uáu! I loved our conversation, a chara! Barbara is an accomplished writer, columnist, and broadcaster, comedian, and BANLAOCH (female warrior). She is frequently published in the national press and magazines. Her first book, ‘Wise Up, Power, Wisdom and the Older Woman' was published in summer 2022 and has been widely well-received. Marian Keyes described it as “a warm, accessible, personal account of what it is to be a woman - and the unexpected courage and freedom we get as we age”. Barbara is a familiar voice on radio and TV, contributing to talk shows on both local and national radio (including RTE Radio One) and she is one half of the very popular So You Think You're An Adult slot every week on the Moncrieff Show on Newstalk with Declan Buckley. She is an experienced MC and public speaker and her popular talk, entitled “What If The Best Is Yet To Come” has been delivered to both corporate and public audiences. In 2023 Barbara inadvertently dipped her toes into stand-up comedy. It went better than she expected and so she did it again at the Funny Women show in Whelans in May 2024. As a result she is now working on her own one woman show which she hopes to perform later this year. Follow Barbara on Instagram @barbarascully111 and on X @barbarascully. They have recently supported the band ‘Thumper' in a sold out Workmans mainroom, and they will take part in the female-fronted festival ‘We've Only Just Begun', in Whelans. Furthermore, they filmed an acoustic set with Lips to Ears for their “Car Boot Sale” series, which can be found on Youtube. The band consists of Martina Moon (vocals, songwriting), Sarah Morgan (guitar), Aisling Stephens McGowan (bass), and Zahira Ellis (drums). Their debut single, Emigrate, has accumulated over 6000 streams on Spotify, and has been featured on publications such as GCN Magazine or The Going Out Out Guide. Their most recent single, Omnibus Boners, is on its way to 5000 streams and has been described by Strephen Byrne (Golden Plec) as ‘the latest example of Irish ladies delivering the goods'. Their influences vary from the singer songwriters of the 60s and 70s such as Paul Simon, Carole King or Joni Mitchell, to the BritPop and rock bands of the 90s, such as Elastica, Catatonia, Radiohead or Blur. Their lyrics talk about alienation and about yearning for connection, complemented by crunchy guitars, loud drums and catchy vocal melodies. This is a new type of episode that I am looking to explore more over the coming years, and that is looking laterally into other fields where we as change-makers can find inspiration. And inspiration you are 100% about to feel and hear in this conversation with one of the finest singer-songwriters around anywhere today, and that is Mark Geary. The music you hear throughout this episode, is from Mark's first album, released in 2002 and has accompanied me on my journey as a designer and an ex-patriot whilst living in Australia. It wasn't until recently though that we really got to sit face to face, in front of turf stove, and drink countless coffees and sing and play guitar together in Mark's gorgeous cottage in the wilds of a rainy Autumn day deep within a forest on the outskirts of Dublin.  In this conversation we talk about the remarkable journey Mark has been on over the last 2-decades that has seen him play all over the world.  Mark doesn't play music to be adored, he plays to exist - it's part of who he is. It's part of his fabric. He constantly tours around the world, often with Glen Hansard, another phenomenally talented Irish musician.  We speak about his roots in Sin-E in New York, a place where he cut his teeth - a free flowing cafe that many music lovers will automatically connect with Jeff Buckley, but this was a community of like minded people, that cheered and nurtured their own. A community, much like our own within This is HCD, that is trying to figure it all out and get ahead. There are points in this conversation where we chat about Mark's environment, and how having the space set up and ready to channel whatever it is that we call ‘it' - how this affects the process. Mark's guitars are all around the place, and he's constantly playing, experimenting, trying and testing out ideas. He's a master crafts person. We even talk how this environment is shaping his music, or maybe his music is shaping his environment. The trio including Ricky (Bass) are about to release a brilliant double EP called "Become a Pope" on November the 26th with a headline show in Whelans, Dublin on the following night. Myself and Danielle had a great chat with the lads in relation to self financing their recordings and the humour they always try to bring to their live shows. SWG's will definitely be ready to hit the ground running in 2022 and should see a steady rise in their popularity both here and abroad. On today's episode I have special guest Fiona Lennon (Instagram @this_is_fi) who hails from Mullingar and commonly goes by Fí, her artist name and project she has been developing over the last few years. Coming from a musical town, she began writing music at 18 and has since accumulated hundreds of songs and many great experiences (working with Grammy nominated songwriters, being played on national radio, and playing big stages like Electric Picnic, Whelans, and Cyprus Avenue) As well as this, Fiona worked as a primary school teacher for four years. She went on a solo trip to Los Angeles which made her realise that she wanted to go into something different when she returned home and in this episode we discuss her journey - her experience with anorexia from a young age, pivoting in her career, dealing with friendship groups, trusting your gut feeling and so much more! Her life has been coloured by many different experiences which have taught her to go with the ebbs and flow of life, to relax on expectations, and to trust her instinct to guide her on her own path of self-discovery.

Órla Sweeney is In The Lamplight! Hear all about Órla's amazing life starting from when she was a newborn baby and her dad placed her next to a record player for a musical christening by Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin. As a child, Órla attended more gigs than most people will in their entire lifetime, accompanying her dad, Oliver, who worked as a journalist for the music magazine Hot Press. As a child, Órla had the opportunity to meet many renowned musicians and artists. As a teenager, while Órla's peers were going to popular club nights in Dublin, Órla often found herself at a traditional music session in Whelans or a folk gig in Vicar Street. The songs of Richard Thompson have remained lifelong favourites of Órla's. We get a listen to Órla performing his classic "The Dimming of the Day" alongside former In The Lamplight guest, Seamie O'Dowd. In her early twenties, Órla recorded and released an album of original material co-written with her father. The opportunity arose out of a recording session for a separate project on which Órla was providing backing vocals and the resulting album led to her being signed to the Warner Bros. record label and she completed several successful tours and performed as support for some of the all-time greats of Irish music. After listening to a track called "Donegal Rain" from her debut album "The Blue Note", Órla opens up on whether her exposure to the music industry and music journalism as a child gave her a heightened awareness of any criticism she received as a performer. Órla gives a very honest insight into her struggles with confidence when it comes to performing in front of an audience.Aside from her career as a performer, Órla has been involved in many behind-the-scenes musical projects, chief among which is her involvement with the phenomenally successful "Ceol" album series in which popular artists record Irish-language versions of their hit songs.Órla produced several albums in the series in the mid-to-late noughties working with artists such as Des Bishop, The Coronas and Eddi Reader. Her work with Reader on a Gaeilge version of the Fairground Attraction hit "Perfect" led to them forming a lasting friendship. Órla performed a song written by Eddi's husband and sung regularly by Eddi - "Wild Mountainside" as part of Kieran's "Not A Theme Night" and we take a listen to that performance here.Rory asks Órla about the emotion she brings to her perfomances, something evident to anyone who saw her perform in the recent "Not A Theme Night" show. Following up with a tough question, Luke asks Órla about the special pair of headphones she's wearing for the interview. The three lads wrap up by reflection on their chat with Órla and reveal some plans for next week's episode which will be released on Saint Patrick's Day.

Mary Gough tragically fell down the stairs in her home, only 6 months after her wedding day. Or, at least that's what her husband, Colin Whelan, said. When Mary was rushed to the hospital after this purported accident, the Gardai did not take him at his word. His story did not add up, and Colin Whelan was charged with with Mary's murder. But when Whelan's car was discovered at the top of Howth Head near the seaside cliffs, people thought that there would be no justice for Mary.  But they were wrong. ******************** Head to www.hellofresh.co.uk (https://www.hellofresh.co.uk/) and enter the code MENSREA at checkout for £60 off! Her music blends elements of folk, rock and storytelling with lyrical content that endeavours to blur the line between fact and fiction. You can find her on facebook at www.facebook.com/AoifeWolfMusic/; instagram @aoifewolf; and more of her music is on soundcloud.com/aoifewolf. The song you heard was “Hounds,” and you can listen to it again on youtube! https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCy7mKvrL4WHGKPDi4zMEE5w Brían de Gúl is a singer-songwriter from Cork. You can find him on facebook at www.facebook.com/BriandeGul. The song you heard was “Tramps and Hawkers,” a favourite of Brian’s, in his words: “Twas written in the 19th century by hawker Besom Jimmy, but it was passed on to singers involved in the early times of the folk revival by Scottish Traveller Jimmy Macbeath. He used tramp the roads all his working life, in search of farm work and places to sing. He used sing for his dinner at fairs and markets while farm workers were on their break. Also, I’ve been told recently that my great grandfather was a hawker in Doneraile in North Cork!” The Candlelit Tales crew performed a rendition of The Champion’s Portion, you can find more about them all at www.candlelittales.ie. In this podcast I am joined by panelists Gerard Tannam, Managing Director,  Islandbridge Brand Direction  and by Paul O'Grady, Group Commercial Director, Mercantile Group. We discuss the challenges for companies to truly put themselves in the customer shoes. The particular challenges of using social media to engage customers are discussed. Paul gives some very good examples of how they differentiate their messaging across many of their brands such as Whelans, The Village and Mercantile Bar, and their restaurant brands. Gerard discusses how companies need to avoid the temptation to have a blanket approach to social media marketing. Companies need to be very sensitive to the audience contexts.
