But why does this happen? What causes us to enter these periods of spiritual dryness? Sometimes, it might be of our own doing. Other times, it is that something has happened to us, yet other times, it's just part of living in a fallen world. If, as Christians, we find ourselves experiencing these kinds of feelings, where things seem dark and lonely, where discouragement seems to be raining down on us, how do we climb out of it? Where do we go, and what do we do? How do we fix our troubled hearts? Join us to hear what Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Philpot share as they guide us to think and act biblically in all these ways when we experience perplexity in our souls.Dr. Caldwell shares that we have all faced these things, and if we haven't we will. What makes some of these times especially difficult is we have no rhyme or reason for them. When a believer experiences spiritual dryness and can point to sin they're allowing in their life, the answer is they need to repent. The Bible says to repent and turn from sin, that times of refreshing will come from the Lord. But what if you're unaware of any sin on your part, any sin you're not confessing, and yet a dryness has settled in?Dr. Caldwell reminds us that we're not encouraged to deal with what we can't see and don't know. We're called to deal with what we can see and what we do know. Too often, we can get caught up in spending too much time trying to figure out why there's this apathy instead of just dealing with the fact that it exists. Christians live by faith, not by sight or feelings. Feelings are fickle and totally untrustworthy. Our responsibility is to obey the Lord, step by step, moment by moment, day by day, no matter how we feel. Sometimes, our physical condition can weigh in on the drynes...

"My soul longs, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God." Psalm 84:2   Sometimes, in our spiritual journey, we may encounter periods of dryness and feel distant from God. It is during such times that we must remember the promise in Proverbs 3:5- 6: to trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. Just like a desert plant relies on deep roots to find water amidst the arid land, so must we deepen our roots in prayer and faith during times of spiritual drought.   In Psalm 42:1-2, the psalmist expresses a deep yearning for God, likening it to a deer panting for streams of water. This imagery reminds us that our souls thirst for God's presence just as intensely. Even when we feel far from Him, we can take comfort in knowing He is always near, waiting for us to seek Him with sincerity and humility.   Isaiah 44:3 says, "For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants."   Consider the story of Elijah on Mount Horeb (1 Kings 19), feeling spiritually drained and isolated. Despite his desolation, God provided sustenance and revealed Himself in a gentle whisper. This narrative is a powerful reminder that even in our lowest moments, God remains faithful and will renew our strength if we earnestly reply to Him.   Just as a garden requires both sunshine and rain to flourish, so too do our spirits need periods of dryness to appreciate the richness of God's presence. Let us approach these seasons with perseverance in prayer, holding onto the assurance found in Isaiah 41:10 that God will uphold us with His righteous hand through every trial. Trust that your season of spiritual dryness is but a prelude to a deeper connection with the living water that never runs dry. Amen. Isaiah 55:1 says, "Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you without money, come, buy, and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost." Amen.   Prayer for the Day! Oh Lord, help me to overcome spiritual dryness and find joy in your presence once again. Guide me through this desert of doubt and confusion, and lead me to the refreshing streams of your grace. Renew my faith, restore my hope, and revive my spirit with the fire of your love. May I never lose sight of you, O God, my strength and my salvation. In Jesus' name. Amen.  --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pastor-divineo/support

As believers and ministry wives, we will experience times of spiritual dryness, times where we struggle to experience the truth of God's presence in our daily lives, times where our spiritual walk feels stagnant and emotionless. We live in a world full of distraction and fatigue; the battle to focus on Christ is ever present.  Author, mother, and pastor's wife Kristen Wetherell has experienced times of spiritual dryness in her own walk and joins us today to share her story. Kristen shines light on some symptoms of spiritual dryness to be on the alert for, as well as how to navigate those seasons with Christ and community at the forefront.  SHOW NOTES In times of spiritual dryness, choose community and confession rather than shame and isolation.  Symptoms of the beginnings of spiritual dryness can include distraction, discouragement, physical fatigue, ministry burnout, or temptation engagement. Discipline and desire go hand in hand. The more we discipline ourselves spiritually, the more we begin to desire God. QUOTES “In seasons of spiritual dryness, you will be tempted toward shame and isolation when what will be most helpful for you is to choose community and confession because those things bring freedom.” -Kristen Wetherell “It’s weird to think about discipline and desire, but I really think they go hand in hand. Sometimes the desire is there and our hearts are just a flame for the Lord.  Sometimes it’s a discipline, and sometimes it’s both. But I think if we’re disciplined, we can sit back and wait on the Lord to renew the desire. But if we’re not disciplined about it, it’s going to be really hard for that desire to have any space to grow when the Lord turns it on again.” -Christine Hoover LINKS FROM THE SHOW Help For the Hungry Soul Front Row Seat CONNECT Connect with Kristen Website  Connect with Christine Facebook // Instagram // Books Visit How to Thrive as a Pastor’s Wife to access Christine's resources for ministry wives like you! This Sunday Pastor Lynn continues our series and shares the message entitled "Things That Get In The Way:Spiritual Dryness!" During this time of fasting we are going after any area of spiritual dryness in our lives. Spiritual dryness comes from unplowed ground--places we have not surrendered to the Holy Spirit. When we have unsurrendered areas, we become spiritual dry and, like Israel, turn to other things, other gods, idols, and even our flesh to fill us and  empower us. But this is not God's will and it is dangerous because it can lead us down a path of separation and destruction. Hosea 10:12 says, "Sow righteousness for yourselves, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the Lord, until he comes and showers his righteousness on you."  Let us take inventory of our lives during this time of fasting and submit ourselves to the Holy Spirit so that He can break up the unplowed spiritual ground in our lives. This will result in the fruit of righteousness--which is simply being like Jesus! And being like Jesus is powerful, abundant living!

The words of the song says, "The longer I serve Him, the sweeter He grows, The more that I love Him, more love He bestows; Each day is like heaven, my heart overflows, The longer I serve Him, the sweeter He grows." For some though, instead of deepening their relationship with Christ, a coolness grows. Church attendance becomes routine. Halleujah drones out and becomes nothing more than words of a song. Bible reading is perfunctory. Prayer time is a check off the list of things done. Church work is simply that ... church work. The scandals that erupt in church are often juicy and depressing -- Pastor so and so did this, the choir director did that. But what about the scandals in us? It's not that you're living a life rifled with sinful living, it's just ... you're going through the motions. You're experiencing with a coldness, a dryness, which leads to apathy. Is it because we're focused on doing this thing FOR the Lord? Are we merely performing? If that's the case, then how can we free ourselves from performance and have a real, in-depth relationship? In our desperation, we are often tempted to cling to something other than God's word in hopes of making it through. But it is only through His word that we have the ability to speak life into our "dry bones," rattle them together, and make them dance. When the dry bones in our lives start rising up, we need God to spark the connection to fulfill our assignment!

A great conversation with a sweet friend of mine, Ali King, about spiritual dryness and what to do when you're in a 'dry season'.   We know it can be frustrating when you've experienced the amazing goodness of God and then find yourself in a place where you feel like you aren't hearing or feeling Him! You feel lonely, confused, abandoned, or maybe even like you want to give up...   BUT there's hope!! Please listen to this episode if you need encouragement and ideas on what to do while you're in a season of spiritual dryness. Sooner or later, spiritual dryness is a condition that will come upon anyone who is engaged in any kind of spiritual journey. In seasons of spiritual dryness, God seems absent, distant, and far away. Psalm 42 shows us what spiritual dryness feels like, what are some of the factors that contribute to it, and most importantly, how to use the resources of the gospel as spiritual medicine in those dry seasons.

In the Bible, Ezekiel teaches that even through all of that, God pursues us with His goodness desiring to bring revival and fill us with His fruit to bring refreshment to our souls. They break open the etymology of the word ‘desert' and its Hebrew roots to discuss how spiritual aridity can be an opportunity to talk to God and grow in your relationship with Him. They offer tips for how Christians can preserve through times of dryness and desolation and offer hope that God is ever-present, even in the silence. Resources: “Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light” edited by Brian Kolodiejchuk, M.C. ; Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola; “Introduction to the Devout Life” by Francis de Sales

Welcome to Teachback Tuesday, where you'll hear the most popular episodes from the previous season. Are you feeling spent? Bone weary and bone dry? The condition of spiritual dryness can happen for a variety of reasons, but most of those reasons are tied to events that have gone on for too long, or changes that we don't like. Sometimes the issues of life are like bad garments ordered on Amazon. You want to return them to the sender! We can't send chapters of our life story back to God for rewrites, but we can trust Him to help us through our seasons of spiritual dryness. When we're dry, we're also thirsty. This episode, Recovering from Spiritual Dryness covers three indicators of thirst, along with suggestions for recovering. God can "pour water" on those who are thirsty. Les and Pastor Kyle Worsham discuss spiritual dryness. What is spiritual dryness? A feeling of being depleted or empty. Many people describe it as feeling far from the presence of God or having minimal or no spiritual growth What 3 things can cause spiritual dryness? Situations and mindsets: lusts of the flesh and pride are the primary ones Lusts: Peter said that fleshly lusts wage “war against the soul” (1 Peter 2:11). Fleshly desires dull the senses of spiritual things. We start to chase after things of this world rather than things of the Kingdom, which leaves us dry. Pride: Pride is the sin that kills faith and trust in God. Pride crept into the garden, and it creeps into your lives today. When we go through life and feel “good” about our state of being, we can forget the Lord and think all we have is from our own strength and doing. Pride seeks adoration and appreciation. It forgets that great and mighty things will be done by God's Spirit, not by our strength. Lack of consuming God's Word: The Bible says that God's Word is a lamp and a light. It reveals the places to walk. So often, we are spiritually dry because we don't know what to do in a given situation. We become so focused on other things or the difficulty of our situation that it takes away from time in God's Word and prayer. Spiritual dryness is a red flag to cut away distraction and carve out time with God every day. How to overcome lust, pride, and lack of consuming God's Word Lust: Ask God to reveal to you any areas that are unchecked. What are you “consuming” that is actually drying you up rather than refreshing and nourishing your spirit? This could be watching certain movies, listening to certain music, or gathering with people who speak against God's Word. Pride: Ask God to reveal areas where pride has crept in. God says that He gives grace to the humble and resists the proud. If you are feeling spiritually dry, humbly come before God and repent. Ask Him to renew a right spirit within you (Psalm 51:10-12). Lack of consuming God's Word: Ask God what He wants you to let go of to begin to receive refreshment from the Living Water. This takes spiritual discipline and commitment, but the harvest will be abundant in due season. Is there a hidden gift in spiritual dryness? Yes! Spiritual dryness is not pleasant, but it is a reality for us at various points in our faith journey. As with anything—in times of joy and trials—we must be willing to ask God what He wants us to see and learn from every circumstance. Seasons of spiritual dryness are no different. Jesus said if anyone thirsts, come. Spiritual dryness leaves us thirsty. But unless we thirst, we won't draw near to the One who can give us living water. The key to overcoming spiritual dryness is to reposition our minds to come to Jesus and drink! How to overcome spiritual dryness Recognize it as an invitation to come to Jesus. David's example in Psalm 42: He didn't allow his past or his feelings to drive him. He decided to praise and hope in God. Worship. Get into the Word. Pray out loud. Journal: record prayers and how God answers them. Join community and attend revival weekend. Livingproof.co/revival

After all, we were shut out of church for a season, and then we realized that there were some things that were very robotic about our attempts to worship the Lord. Revival is often born during times of trial. “Recovering from Spiritual Dryness” shared three indicators that we may be spiritually thirsty, along with suggestions for recovering from this temporary condition. Are you one of many people who didn't mind when church was limited to live stream for a season? Maybe you would only admit this to close friends or family, but you had company. After decades of going to church in person, suddenly we were sitting in our pajamas with pancakes, bacon, coffee and our Bibles. Okay maybe some of you only had coffee but still, this wasn't how we normally went to church. Something happened during that time of dramatic change. It advanced the ideal environment for spiritual dryness. Not everyone had this experience, but if you found yourself embracing the live stream over the in-person service so much that you didn't want to return, there may have been more going on than just side effects of the pandemic. And it's not just about church, either. Seasons of spiritual dryness can happen to anyone. The pandemic is not the only thing that was going on in people's lives when it arrived, and it will never be the only thing we're facing on any given day. There are many things in life that can leave us feeling physically spent and spiritually drained, but God can help us to recover. We'll consider three indicators that we may be running dry, and then we'll explore suggestions for recovering from this temporary condition. Spiritual dryness happens, but it doesn't have to become permanent.
