In episode 286 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed reflecting on themes that those dealing with AI and photography are focusing on and the homogenisation of the photo book. Plus this week, photographer Bill Stephenson takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' Bill Stephenson was born in 1955 in Birmingham, but spent his teenage school years growing up in Leeds. After studying for his A levels he wanted to work in a creative industry, and enrolled on the Furniture Design course at Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham. During the course he was required to complete a short photography block. As soon as he started creating images with a camera, he knew this was the career he had been looking for and resigned from the Furniture Design course. Unable to join the photography course as he was ineligible to receive a student grant he began working as a tyre fitter, van delivery driver and a photographer at Butlins Holiday Camp, Skegness in 1977. The following year he sent a small portfolio of photographs to the British Journal of Photography which was published. This led to an invitation from the Communication Arts, BA (Hons) Fine Art Degree course at Sheffield City Polytechnic to consider applying to join the course. He quickly developed a passion and commitment for photographing and recording communities of people who are often over looked, neglected, marginalised or considered unimportant. He has continued to work on commissioned social documentary photography projects alongside a successful commercial photography business before semi-retiring in 2021. He currently lives in Derbyshire, UK. https://billstephenson.co.uk This podcast is also available on Spotify, Google and Apple podcasts as well as wherever you usually get your podcasts. The dean of Canadian sports broadcasting, Brian Williams, looks back at his 50-year career after announcing his retirement from CTV Sports and TSN. Among the highlights: 35 years coast-to-coast on radio with Don Cherry on "Grapeline" -- and not one controversy! Williams, 75, hosted Olympic Games broadcasts for both CBC and CTV. His first game as a reporter, covering weightlifting, was in Montreal in 1976. His last as host, London in 2012. Vancouver 2010 was the pinnacle, says Williams, as Canada owned the podium with 14 Gold medals. It's also where he met up with that other Brian Williams, the NBC news anchor, also just retired in order to add to the confusion. The Winnipeg native also distinguished himself for his coverage of all sports: Formula1 and horse racing, the CFL, Major League Baseball and hockey, everything but comptitive tiddlywinks. He saw them all from Jackie Stewart to Ron Lancaster to Ben Johnson, and worked with some of the greats, sharing stories about Dick Beddoes, Jim "Shakey" Hunt, Don Chevrier and Bill Stephenson. We also talk about those "It's 8 am in Helsinki, 2:30 in Newfoundland," sign-ons he used to give every Games, and how he misses getting ribbed about that from the late Roger Abbott of the Royal Canadian Air Farce.

The book "M" (2017) by author Henry Hemming describes the life of Maxwell Knight, MI5's greatest spymaster during the 20th century. Maxwell famously ran about two dozen agents, uncovering many secrets and plots threatening the UK. In “Our Man In New York” (2019) Henry describes the Great Debate (1940 - 1941): do the USA enter the second World War or not? An MI6 agent, Bill Stephenson, was sent to the US to make sure they did. And Stephenson succeeded! Don and Henry chat about both these books, discussing Maxwell's personal and professional life. How he went from an undercover agent in the British Fascisti to an extraordinary agent runner during WWII. And also, how Stephenson managed to pull off a seemingly impossible task, influencing polls, creating fake news and having access to people in very high places! The podcast starts with an audio clip from M, narrated by Henry himself.
