In this episode, we explore food places beginning with 'B.' Neil uncovers the buttery—not the hearty Scottish roll, but the traditional place where wine is stored. Allie dives into the origins and charm of the bistro, with its revolutionary roots where food and culture come together in cosy, intimate spaces. Meanwhile, Sam unwraps the story of Bourneville, where chocolate and community collide. Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

The factories of Victorian England were dark places. Fatalities were high, and workers often lived in poverty. “How can the working man cultivate ideals,” George Cadbury asked, “when his home is a slum?” And so he built a new kind of factory for his expanding chocolate business, one that benefited his workers. The result was Bourneville, a village of more than three hundred homes with sports fields, playgrounds, schools, and churches for Cadbury’s workers and their families. They were paid good wages and offered medical care, all because of Cadbury’s faith in Christ. Jesus teaches us to pray for God’s will to be done “on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). This prayer can help us imagine, as Cadbury did, what our workplaces would be like under God’s rule, where our “daily bread” is earned and our “debtors” forgiven (vv. 11–12). As employees, it means working with “all your heart . . . for the Lord” (Colossians 3:23). As employers, it means giving staff what’s “right and fair” (4:1). Whatever our role, whether paid or voluntary, it means tending to the well-being of those we serve with. Like George Cadbury, let’s imagine how things could be different if God were in charge of our neighborhoods and workplaces. Because when He is, people flourish.

The conversation: In this 'double interview' Michaela Gerussi and Alice Gale-Feeny (both initiators of the podcast) ask questions about each others' artistic practices, trace some of the ideas which inform them, and unpack different perspectives between their (respective) backgrounds in fine art and contemporary dance. The conversation departs from a place of friendship and familiarity, whereas Alice and Michaela have been working closely since 2019 as peers on the 'MFA Creative Practice: Dance Professional Practice' course with Trinity Laban and Independent Dance. They discuss:-Dialogue; facilitated or 'choreographed' conversations as frames (i.e. Quaker meetings; 'fishbowl conversations', Bohmian Dialogue)-Authorship and collaboration-Notions of ‘material' in both dance and fine art/performance contexts-Fine art training (the changing idea of the art history canon) -States of attention in artistic practice (i.e. distractions as generative)-Objects and written/spoken voice/language as material in physical practice; as extensions of the body; [“The post- in the human suggests not that we come afterways as prosthetic newcomers, but that we were always already embodied in excess of our organs.” (Erin Manning, Politics of touch : sense, movement, sovereignty.

French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot is perhaps most well known today from the images of his “hysterical” female patients featured in Bourneville’s Iconographie Photographique de la Salpêtrière. While not diminishing the epistemological and aesthetic importance of “the image” to Charcot, Jonathan W. Marshall argues in Performing Neurology: The Dramaturgy of Dr. Jean-Martin Charcot (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016) that the work of the French neurologist is best understood through the lens of dramaturgy. He demonstrates the spatial and temporal implications of Charcot’s neurological practice as steeped in neo-classical aesthetics and deeply attuned to scenography, showmanship, and stage production. Using convincing evidence drawn from critiques of Charcot, Marshall demonstrates in Performing Neurology that the power and danger of mixing medicine and theatrics was not lost on Charcot’s contemporaries. Historian and author, Carl Chinn reaches back into the early history of Cadburys – an iconic name which is synonymous with Birmingham. Carl reveals that the company originated not in the leafy suburb of Bourneville, but in the very heart of the rapidly expanding industrial town. The story is one of significant challenges and near-disaster as well as perseverance and innovation. But the family’s devotion to quality products which were “absolutely pure” combined with their entrepreneurial skills, saw them succeed.
