Today's podcast features Jon Stea. Jon is a strength and performance coach based in Vancouver with over a decade of experience developing athletes from youth to the professional level. Jon combines coaching practices with an overarching philosophy of sport and movement concepts. As modern society advances, youth sports and adult movement practices are becoming increasingly rigid and specialized. Many athletes struggle to progress in their sport and lose interest once their competitive careers end. Adults engage in community-based fitness but often miss the opportunity to explore their full movement potential and the deeper fulfillment it brings. Understanding why we train and how to empower athletes in their unique process is more crucial than ever. On today's episode, Jon speaks on building a creative, authentic coaching process that gives athletes room to fail, learn, and grow, expanding their abilities over time. He discusses the importance of connection and environment in sports training, games, and movement challenges, gets into motor learning concepts, and speaks on the overall art of coaching athletes for their long-term success. This is a conversation that our current sports, and sports performance world, demands that we have, to offer athletes room to not only be better in their sport but move and play as their authentic selves, in their chosen practice. Coaching or training, whether it be through sports, strength and conditioning, or working at a gym, is just a vehicle for human connection” 24:10 “You have a lot of contact time with people in a low-stakes environment (personal training, strength and conditioning), where someone is allowed to screw up, and that's almost the point of a session, I want to see you fail, so I know where we can improve” 24:45 “We want to do a lot of things in here that you fail at, so we can do more of those things” 25:10 “You want to be your authentic self as much as possible so that athletes feel they can be that too” 30:15: “What you do doesn't matter as much as who you are (to the athletes)” 38:45 “Go over to the wall, pick up 2 pieces of equipment, and we are going to make up a game” 39:45 “I find youth athletes, that's something I've found drilled into them so much, “how do we score points, how do we win”. Remnants of Humanity: Journey Throughout Our Sacred Earth to Restore Balance Held Within the Feminine Dimension by Christine Van Camp ZeccaThe twenty-first century is facing worldwide disintegration. The spiritual systems are falling apart, revealing the lack of all that used to sustain humanity as notions of separation prevail. However, inclusion is essential for survival. Profound love is more powerful than hate, but those in power amplify/ hate, destroying humanity in the process. After the collapse of Western civilization in North America, survivors grounded in healing love flee south. Seven millennia later, an isolated outpost of women wants to share its hard-earned wisdom. These earth-based shamans are losing the energy to continue, unless they can connect with the Underworld of Dreaming Nature to find suitable males to join them. Their quest attracts other “remnants” that also wish to regenerate the planet and return joy to the world. Paradigm shifts are required to reinvigorate the inevitable toxic collapse of a corrupted society, hope rests in the hands of feminine energy and hard-earned wisdom.  She works with creativity and the imaginal realm integrating her background of 30 years of Jungian studies and analysis, DreamTending, and other forms of embodied dream work. She completed BodySoul Rhythms Leadership Training with Marion Woodman that integrates Jung's work with experiential modalities of dream, imaginal work, voice & body expressions with the intention of bringing deeper levels of awareness into our conscious being. Her own practices include painting (since she was 2), Tai Chi (50 years), yoga (20 years), QiGong (6 years), 5Rhythms practice (12 years), Authentic Movement (4 years), Continuum (3 years), Incubation practice rediscovered by Peter Kingsley from Ancient Pre-Socratic philosophers Empedocles & Parmenides (recent) & is currently studying / experiencing Shamanic Trainings:‘The World in Balance' or Katasee (1 year), Visionseeker Trainings and Continuum Private Trainings with Hank Wesselman and Jill Kuykendal: 4 years, completed both one year of VisionSeeker and two years of Advanced Continuum Trainings on two separate occasions. Ellen Emmet is a psychotherapist, facilitator of Authentic Movement, and offers meetings in The Awakening Body: Yoga meditations in the tradition of non-duality and Kashmir Shivaism that she learnt from her teachers Francis Lucille and Eric Baret. She offers webinars and residential retreats. Her offering is an exploration of our true nature at the level of tactility and feelings, but also an inquiry into the hidden corners of the psyche to invite more wholeness into our lives. More specifically, The Awakening Body meetings focus on the body, “allowing it to be our mirror and our pathway, our prayer and our altar, and ultimately the shining expression of this shared identity.” Our conversation explores the complex topic of nonduality and the shadow. Ellen's growing intuition matched my own, that nondual teachings can often be used as a way to escape difficult emotions or feelings, or even disown the body, and overlook or avoid the shadow. With training in Jungian philosophy, including working directly with Jungian analyst Marion Woodman, Ellen brings wisdom and openness to exploring this oversight. Topics include connecting to the wisdom of the body, relational alchemy, the pain of separation, nonduality as a hiding place, ever-present nature of peace, the path of devotion, the role of the divine feminine, and ways to avoid ego inflation. What is Radical Aliveness? How can we explore the principles of Radical Aliveness in the laboratory space of our lives? How might being in a group process help us with exploring our deep feelings?Being in conversation with my friend and teacher Madison Nees is always a profound experience for me. I'm excited for you to listen in and to explore this alive, glowing, curious space we co-created. My first conversation with Madison for Healing The Spirit (Ep. 22 Dancing in The Underworld) was recorded about a year ago, right before the first run of her offering, Katabasis: A Journey to Aliveness. This time, Madison and I met at the crossroads. I'm currently at the end of a yearlong journey with my offering, Astrology as Praxis, and Madison is about to re-enter the field of Katabasis for its second cohort. The principles of Radical Aliveness guided our conversation. The principles are: Cultivating a Non-Shaming Heart and AttitudeKnowing I Don't KnowWelcoming Multiple PerspectivesBeing Willing to be ChangedSaying YES to EverythingIf you're curious about Madison's work, this event coming up on Sunday is great place to start: An Introduction to Radical Aliveness. Here's Madison's bio:Madison Nees is a human, counselor, artist, and guide. My practice focuses on the intersection of ecology, ritual and somatics. I have worked in the addiction and trauma treatment industry since 2015. My own journey includes healing from substance use, anorexia nervosa, loss of culture and self. When I began my journey, I did not understand that the pull to somatics was a call of my ancestors. I was being pulled to heal all the things my mother could not and ultimately lost her life avoiding. I was being pulled to feel the things my Grandmother had no language for.My body knew the language however, and it spoke in illness, pains, aches and rage. It also spoke the language of held grief and aloneness. During this process, I discovered gifts hidden beneath these repressed emotions. These gifts were the sensations. The gifts were the rivers of grief leading me home to myself. They were also the intuition and creativity of my lineage. I always tried to “do” something with the emotions but my healing progressed the more I simply sat with them. Instead of trying to push them away, I wondered what would happen if I let them grow. They grew into my practice today. You can sign up for Madison's newsletter on Madison's website, and follow Madison's work on Instagram @ritual_body.  Check out Madison's exciting new six-month journey, Katabasis, which will begin on Sep 17, 2023. Known in the yoga world as THE teachers' teacher, Annie Carpenter (@anniecarpentersmartflow) shares her story with Anne, who has been an avid student, first via online platform Glo.com, before attending live Zoom classes and IRL workshops with her in 2022. Annie's journey starts in Virginia, but she tells Anne how she found her path early on with dance, leading her to the Martha Graham company and New York City. From getting a scholarship to working at the junior company and briefly joining the main company, Annie found a calling in what she refers to as authentic self-movement and in teaching at the Martha Graham Center. An introvert, she shares with Anne how yoga became an essential part of her life, thanks to Integral yoga (Swami Satchidananda's school) which felt like a refuge from the competitiveness of the dance world.Annie explains how after a trip to LA and a conversation with her teacher Maty Ezraty, she impulsively relocated to the West Coast and turned to teaching yoga full time, training at Yoga Works under Maty and Lisa Walford. They go on to talk about teaching, about Annie's movement principles and energy, how to create inspiration for students, and why Annie founded her own yoga school, Smart Flow Yoga. Annie also shares why continuing to evolve is essential, as well as learning to let go of preconceived notions. She explains how she has learnt to tap into her students' expectations rather than relying on her own. Now based in Northern California, the teacher, who turned 65 this year, also talks about the stages of life, or ashrams, and she is learning to ‘retire' whatever is not supportive in her practice. Quoting Noam Chomsky, she says: "If you are teaching today what you were teaching five years ago, either your field is dead, or you are.” Annie also reveals  her passion for bird-watching, her mindfulness and pranayama practices, and how learning to be still was the doorway to her meditation practice. Finally, she answers the most delicate and profound question of all, one that Annie regularly asks her students: who is Annie? A joyous, profoundly thoughtful and inspiring interview. Sherry Saterstrom helped shape the life of the dance program at St. Olaf College from the late 1960's when she was a student there. A twist of fate brought her back as a guest artist and teacher after completing a Master's Degree in Dance/Humanities at Arizona State University. Over the years her fascination with invention yielded classes such as The Body Movable, Power Play, The Beat Goes On, Movement as a Metaphor, Improvisation as Practice and Performance. In 2000 with a growing passion for improvisation in movement technique and performance, she invented The Improvisation Ensemble. This group continued to re-invent itself with each new season of possibility.Between1978-84 Sherry created and co-directed Dance Co'Motion, a modern dance company whose work was focused in the Artist-in-Residence program of the National Endowment for the Arts. Over the years she enjoyed performing with other dance artists--- Maria Cheng and Dancers, Paula Mann, Bill T. Jones, Lovice Weller, Deborah Hay, Body Cartography---and learning from their artistic visions. As a seeker of new adventures in 2001 Sherry developed a workshop, ”Dance in the Rainforest” at a biological field station in the rainforest of Costa Rica. The workshop intended to pull dancers and movement artists out of their more controlled environments and challenge their notions of dance. It aimed for personal and artistic discovery through navigating unfamiliar terrain. Since 1984 Sherry has focused her training in the area of body-mind studies as it relates to movement, dance and the learning process. She is a certified Body-Mind Centering practitioner and includes meditation, Authentic Movement, yoga, Gaga and movement improvisation in her ongoing physical practice. Her most recent fascination is with the world of fitness and its relationship to her fundamental passion for all things physical.

On a chilly morning in November, 2013, Deborah Cohan, MD, a clinical professor and program director at the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine, walked into an operating suite, her curly hair tucked under a cap, not to perform surgery but to undergo a double mastectomy for breast cancer. Within minutes, the sterile room began to enliven with R&B drumbeats, and the entire surgical team erupted into dance to Beyoncé’s “Get Me Bodied,” with Cohan in the center of it all. This flash mob video, captured by the anesthesiologist, went viral — with over eight million views to date — and even Beyoncé herself posted it on her Facebook page. “What better time to celebrate life,” said Cohan, “than when you’re facing death?” To be clear, for Cohan, dancing wasn’t about glossing over suffering with a forced smile, but about leaning into the body, literally dancing with fear and grief. Dancing was her way to optimize her body before surgery, to connect with the surgical team, and to embrace friends and family dancing virtually in solidarity with her. As an obstetrician-gynecologist who has performed thousands of ultrasounds and witnessed babies dancing in their mothers’ wombs, Cohan imagines that she, too, was dancing long before she was born. When she was three, she began learning highly choreographed methods like ballet and jazz. Then in 2011, she happened upon Dance Journey, a conscious practice where people danced freely, effortlessly, and, as she observed, ecstatically; these movements opened up in her a deep listening to her body and an awareness of the healing power within. It was in this spirit that she danced in the surgical suite. And in 2014, a year after her surgery, Cohan founded Foundation for Embodied Medicine (FEM), a nonprofit organization to bring this embodied wisdom to patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. A Harvard-trained physician, Cohan is an obstetrician who attends births at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and serves as the medical director of HIVE, caring for pregnant people living with HIV and promoting reproductive and sexual wellness for those living with and affected by HIV. Since 2005, there have been no babies born with HIV in San Francisco. In addition to her medical degree, Cohan holds a masters in public health from the University of California at Berkeley, and a fellowship in reproductive infectious diseases at San Francisco General Hospital. She also served as a member of the Department of Health and Human Services Panel on Antiretroviral Guidelines for Adults and Adolescents. For Cohan, medicine and movement are deeply interwoven. She has studied with Anna Halprin of Life/Art Process, Tina Stromsted of Authentic Movement, and Valerie Chafograck of Dance Sanctuary and Movement Liberation. With an embodied approach that honors the inherent wisdom of our bodies and nature, she has served as a doula for those who are giving birth and those who are dying.  The flash mob video landed Cohan interviews on multiple mainstream media outlets, including Good Morning America and the Ellen DeGeneres Show, and inspired others to dance before their surgeries. She lives in Berkeley, California, with her two children and their dog. The conversation: In this 'double interview' Michaela Gerussi and Alice Gale-Feeny (both initiators of the podcast) ask questions about each others' artistic practices, trace some of the ideas which inform them, and unpack different perspectives between their (respective) backgrounds in fine art and contemporary dance. The conversation departs from a place of friendship and familiarity, whereas Alice and Michaela have been working closely since 2019 as peers on the 'MFA Creative Practice: Dance Professional Practice' course with Trinity Laban and Independent Dance. They discuss:-Dialogue; facilitated or 'choreographed' conversations as frames (i.e. Quaker meetings; 'fishbowl conversations', Bohmian Dialogue)-Authorship and collaboration-Notions of ‘material' in both dance and fine art/performance contexts-Fine art training (the changing idea of the art history canon) -States of attention in artistic practice (i.e. distractions as generative)-Objects and written/spoken voice/language as material in physical practice; as extensions of the body; [“The post- in the human suggests not that we come afterways as prosthetic newcomers, but that we were always already embodied in excess of our organs.” (Erin Manning, Politics of touch : sense, movement, sovereignty. Where do we locate and emphasize the work?-The Solo performance; implications/optics of that as starting point, where attention is placed, possibilities of subtlety, detail, etc.Interviewee/interviewer: Michaela Gerrusi is a dance artist researching the complexities of how we sense ourselves. Informed by her studies in Craniosacral Biodynamics, her practice is concerned with the intersection of the nervous system, self-regulation, affect and dance-making. michaelagerussi.com Interviewer/interviewee: Alice Gale-Feeny is currently developing a performance practice that investigates the emergent potentials of speaking aloud and being with objects as a way to occupy a middle ground between self/selves and other(s). alicegale-feeny.com

EP#003 | CLARE OSBOND & TIM BROWN | DANCE OF AWARENESS Today's conversation is with two of Marcela's teachers, Clare Osbond & Tim Brown of the Brighton School for Embodied Therapy, here in our home county of Sussex in the UK. Clare is a body psychotherapist with specific experience in working with trauma, movement and mindfulness. She also has an MA in Dance Movement Psychotherapy, and offers body-centred, movement, and sensorimotor psychotherapy, as well as an ongoing women's movement therapy group. Tim is a body psychotherapist with a background in Deep Bodywork, Embodied Relational Therapy, Postural Integration, Authentic Movement and trauma work. He brings a gentle curiosity, creativity, and warm humour to his work. He believes in taking the body seriously as it holds deep wisdom – and that we just need to listen to it, and trust what it tells us. Together they developed Dance of Awareness, a group movement practice that aims to increase self-awareness and self- acceptance. They both have such knowledge and experience that we could have easily just spoken to them about their individual practices, however our focus for the podcast was their work with Dance of Awareness. They explain the therapeutic value of movement, developmental psychology, and the affirming effect of being witnessed and witnessing ourselves. We also discussed how Dance of Awareness can help with trauma, what this means, and how it is realised in the body. They have said that ‘the moving body is the form in which consciousness grows and explores its self', and when that movement is done there's a return to the ‘ground of awareness'. Seen in this light, their teaching connects participants with mind, body and spirit though movement and is spiritual in nature. Clare leads a beautiful couples exercise to explore our feeling and relationship towards Support at the end of the interview that we loved participating in. We hope you do too. Correction: I misspoke in my introduction to the episode. Melissa is not yet certified as a sex therapist. I apologize for any confusion. Sexual Fragmentation - what is it and how does it show up in sex therapy? Tune in today to learn about how Melissa defines fragmentation as it applies to sex therapy work, as she talks about the competing needs we all have within us. How do we get fragmented? Melissa answers this question, discussing how our sexual and social development from a young age is impacted by loved ones and society, often creating a wedge between our minds and bodies Fragmentation: positive or negative? Keep listening to hear why fragmentation is not necessarily a negative thing, and why it can, in fact, help us to explore and learn more about ourselves. Melissa delves into the fact that a large part of our psyche is in shadow. As we grow up, we are encouraged to critically think and explore so many different subjects and aspects of life; but generally not encouraged to explore or think critically about sexuality and intimacy. “We don't know what we don't know.” How does fragmentation present? Here we learn the key topics that Melissa's clients often bring up and how people use shame or blame as a defense against things that scare them. Spend some time listening as Melissa talks more about the subject of fear in relation to sexuality. Working to heal fragmentation Hear Melissa explain how she approaches the subject of fragmentation with her clients by using body-centered therapy. She tells us that she uses not only the minds of clients but also focuses heavily on dropping down into the body, to the original place where many fragmentations originally occurred. Past memories and moving forward to healing Melissa answers the question: Do people need to remember the original incidences in order to heal? Join in to find out how she helps people de-identify with their stories and move them past the uncomfortable feelings and emotions they may experience in this journey. Erotic mindfulness The definition of mindfulness is listening to your arousal instead of following it blindly. This is one of the first things that Melissa helps her clients to develop a practice in, to help them get out of their head and focus on the pleasure of the body. Find out how it works when couples experience therapy and practice together. Trauma survivors and fear of getting in touch with the body Melissa outlines the impact that trauma can have on the body, and the gentle process that she uses to help people reconnect with those parts of themselves that may have become numb, so they can begin experiencing pleasure and enjoying sex again. Starting the healing process at home Find out some simple pathways to help you start this reconnection process at home by exploring things that already give you pleasure in ways that may not necessarily be sexual. Here, we learn about the expansiveness of sexuality as a generative force and how sex itself is just one component of sensuality. The final takeaway message Our podcast winds up with Melissa telling us her one most important take-home message to start bringing all those fragmented parts of ourselves together. You don't want to miss this valuable message. Background Melissa Walker is a Body-Centered Psychotherapist specializing in sex and relationship therapy for both couples and individuals. Director for the Embodied Relationships Counseling Center, she graduated Naropa University in 2009 and combines her training with certification in Somatic Archaeology, Psychodrama, and Authentic Movement, teaching clients how to get in touch with their body and repair some of the fragmentation that occurs during their life experiences. They discuss: The paradigm shift of moving from the "fixing" mentality to one of exploration and discovery How asking deeper questions can help us find intrinsic motivation beyond the boilerplate reasons why a lot of people come to Pilates and how these questions can better help us meet our or our students needs How to help our students set goals and take ownership for their choices and experiences The different stages of competency and teaching strategies to increase competency Top down versus bottom up processing Links Mentioned: Skillful Teaching Mentorship Program About Chantill Lopez "Be real. On the importance of staying in our bodies, slowing down to be with our own body's living systems and sensitivity, and getting to know the deeper life of our anatomy as an antidote to the fast-paced, electronic world that is evolutionary new to the human body. Guest Andrea Olsen is a pioneering embodiment educator and expert on experiential anatomy, the author of  a triad of books on the human body and its creative and intuitive expression. For the last three decades  Andrea  has been a Professor of Dance  and Environmental Studies at Middlebury College in Vermont. She is a long time collaborator with embodied mindfulness pioneers  Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen of Body-Mind Centering and Janet Adler of Authentic Movement.   Andrea also teaches at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey, California,  bringing body education and mindfulness practices into graduate courses on global communication. This episode's Wisdom Quotes: “Understanding that body is part of Earth is an essential component of human awareness. Our bones, and our breath, and our blood are the minerals and the air and the water around us, so that when you arrive someplace new, after a few days of drinking the water or eating the food from that place, you become that place. So the idea of separateness starts to fade and this larger model of interconnectedness becomes more primary in our awareness.” “We are not naming the bones and the muscles to distance ourselves from the body but to consider these parts as family. To be able to name your femur or tibia or the fibula is like knowing your relatives and making the inhabitation of this wonderful structure that we're in more familiar while retaining the mystery.”   More about Andrea Olsen's work : www.andrea-olsen.com, www.body-earth.org   More about host Stefana Serafina's work: www.intuitivedance.org
