John is joined by American singer and songwriter d4vd, to talk about how he wrote and recorded his debut album ‘Withered'.  David Burke, aka d4vd, broke into music after beginning to produce tracks of his own to accompany Fortnite videos. Having taught himself how to make music on BandLab and uploading tracks online, he first saw success with the single ‘Romantic Homicide', becoming a viral hit. John is joined by Hollywood royalty and Jazz sensation Jeff Goldblum along with producers Alex Frank and Scott Gilman to talk about how they recorded and produced ‘Still Blooming'. A lifelong pianist, Jeff formed The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra in the 1990s, performing in and around LA for over 20 years. The band's fourth album released in May 2025, ‘Still Blooming', blends Broadway classics and tracks from the great American Songbook with guest vocals from Scarlett Johansson, Maiya Sykes, and Jeff's Wicked co-stars Ariana Grande, and Cynthia Erivo. The record was arranged, recorded and produced by band members Alex Frank and Scott Gillman. In this episode, Jeff, Alex, and Scott walk us through each track's creation, from spontaneous singing on set, to detailed musical arrangements and figuring out keys over the phone. They share the production tricks used to balance pop vocals with jazz recordings, the moments they all jammed together in the studio, and how they plan to bring it all to the stage. The Value of Studying DanceDanceCast is a podcast that spotlights non-traditional dance artists. It is produced by Silva Laukkanen, an advocate for inclusive dance based in Austin, TX.In this episode of DanceCast, Silva interviews Jasmiina Sipilä, who works as a leading teacher in the dance department of Vocational College Live, where they offer the only professional dance degree in Finland for dancers with special needs. The professional degree in dance is aimed for students with special needs, which means these dance students need individual support, modifications, and extra guidance in their studies and working life. The definition of special needs is used in this interview as an umbrella term to mean students who are neurodivergent, have developmental disabilities, have mental health challenges, or have different bodies and motor functions.  Jasmiina describes how, in the degree, the students focus on contemporary dance, cooperation, somatic skills, performing, choreographing, and inclusive dance theory, as well as curriculum in dance practice and theory. The students' degree has many applications after graduation, from dancing professionally to working in the community with different populations.This episode is part of a series interviewing institutions with inclusive dance programs and individuals who identify as disabled and have experienced formal dance education as either students or teachers. This series is part of Silva's ongoing work as the director of Art Spark Texas' dance program. This year, she is continuing the multi-year community-engaged research project, funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, that explores disability-centered accessibility in dance education and how we can create barrier-free dance education for students with disabilities in the US.Jasmiina Sipilä is a dancer (BA Hons in Contemporary Dance, Trinity Laban, City University of London), a dance teacher (Master of Dance, University of the Arts, Helsinki), and a special education teacher (professional teacher training college, Haaga-Helia, Helsinki). Rachel is currently Head of Movement at the Guildford School of Acting. She trained at the London Contemporary Dance School, graduating in 2006, and in 2009 she was selected for a unique choreographic programme, Dance Beyond Borders, which took her work across Europe, including Germany, Belgium as well as across the UK.  She holds an MA in Choreography from Trinity Laban, a fellowship from the Higher Education Academy, moreover she's an associate of the Institute for Leadership and Management and a Consent Forward Artist certified by the IDC (Intimacy, Director's and Co-ordinators).  She has collaborated with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the British Youth Music Theatre.  Rachel talks me through her love of movement, how it means different things to different practitioners, her work with animal studies and how people who say “it's not their thing” can grow to love and embrace it. Not to mention, how integral it is to the actor's process, finding the body of the character, finding the big expressions and condensing it down into a natural character's characteristics. Building a Music School with Barbara Mohorko-Vuka is another fascinating installment of the Business Awards Show. Barbara grew up in Slovenia, learning cello from the age of six and gaining an extensive musical education that saw her graduate from Trinity Laban and the Royal College of Music. Barbara took over the Wimbledon School of Music in 2018 at just 22 years of age. Depsite a global pandemic attempting to disrupt the development of her school, Barbara has grown the school impressively over the last five years. Most instruments are now taught and the school is going from strength to strength. She tells us about the work of the school, the joy of concerts, how music education is treated differently in Slovenia to the UK and the long term plans for her business. Having won a silver award at the 2023 Best Businesswomen Awards, she also talks about the impact of winning an award, and her plans to enter more local awards in 2024. This is a great episode for any young entrepreneur wondering if they are mature enough to run a business. Mateja Bučar je slovenska koreografija in plesalka, ki je svojo umetniško pot začela kot balerina v Operi in baletu SNG v Ljubljani, pozneje in vzporedno je bila članica Plesnega teatra Ljubljana. Baletno izobrazbo je pridobivala doma in v tujini, prav tako tehnike modernega in sodobnega plesa. Z letom 1992 stopi na samostojno umetniško pot koreografinje in plesalke. Od leta 1999 pod okriljem DUM, Društva umetnikov, so njena dela s področij sodobnega plesa in performansa uprizarjana v mednarodnem prostoru. Mateja Bučar je leta 2015 na Trinity Laban konservatoriju za glasbo in ples londonske univerze prejela doktorski naziv na področju teorije estetskih vprašanj v koreografskih praksah. ABOUT ROWAN FLACK:Rowan Flack is a south London-based artist known for her introspective and accessible contemporary jazz songs with contemplative lyrics and understated, transparent vocal delivery. As a jazz graduate of Trinity Laban and a former student of The Brit School; her music weaves between the genres of jazz, pop and folk. Inspired by a broad range of singers and instrumentalists; she listens to Astrud Gilberto, Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek, Norah Jones, and Gretchen Parlato although early influences also include more downtempo dance and indie-folk bands such as Bonobo, Zero-7, Fleet Foxes, and Villagers. This new production is directed by James Brining and designed by Simon Higlett.Having graduated from Trinity Laban in 2022, Teddy made his professional debut in Anyone Can Whistle by Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents at the Southwark Playhouse.Teddy is trans and proudly speaks up for trans rights whilst calling for better representation for trans people in theatre. After finishing in the final 12 for SSSPOTY (Stephen Sondheim Society Performer of the Year) awards, Cassius Hackforth has continued to make a name for himself within the industry. Shortly after the performing at the final, Cassius was announced to be joining the company for the Charing Cross Theatre's production of From Here to Eternity. It was here where he was reunited with SSSPOTY winner Desmonda Cathabel and he got to make his professional West End debut. Earlier this year, Cassius also joined headed to Guildford to play Peter in the premiere production of Alex Parker and Katie Lam's The Railway Children. In both shows, Cassius demonstrated an enthusiasm and determination to succeed in an industry which can be very unpredictable. Indeed, he charmingly admits to regularly writing to writers, directors and producers to express his desire for work.In one of his first ever interviews, Cassius Hackforth sat down to reflect on his recent successes - making his West End debut and being competing as a finalist at SSSPOTY. He revealed his love for screen work too having recently completed work on a  short film: Move On Up and getting to play speaking role in the upcoming Indiana Jones film. We also get to hear Cassius open up about his struggles too - namely his battle with anorexia and admitting the difficulties of gaining work in the industry. After receiving an eating disorder diagnosis during his training at Trinity Laban, he sought treatment and bravely came forward about his experience hoping to inspire more people to come forward about their struggles. There's something quite remarkable about Cassius' love for performing and we are sure there'll be further opportunities to watch him on stage or on screen going forwards.

The three-way conversation begins with introductions from guest curator Daniela Perazzo, then delves into the notion of intimacy and touch in life and in performance, discussing Charlotte's new work Written in the Body, and moving into how practices of wellness and support can exist within artistic work. Finally, we discuss the role of language in Charlotte's work. This is the first episode in a two part mini-series on the theme of 'Re-enchanting British dance,' guest-curated by Daniela Perazzo and supported by Kingston University. Both episodes are three-way conversations between an invited artist, a member of the podcast team, and Daniela Perazzo. Bios: Charlotte Spencer is a choreographer, teacher, curator, mentor and performer. She initiates all projects for Charlotte Spencer Projects, often working across art forms and in outdoor environmental contexts. Charlotte was recipient of a Bonnie Bird Choreographic Development Award in 2020. She has received commissions from The Place, Wellcome Collection, Greenwich Dance, Trinity Laban, Salisbury International Art Festival, South East Dance, Jerwood Galleries, Turner Contemporary, Siobhan Davies Dance and Brighton & Hove Libraries. Charlotte was a Sadler's Wells Summer University Artist 2015-18 led by Jonathan Burrows and Eva Martinez, and Artist Activator at Greenwich Dance 2014-17. She has worked closely with Siobhan Davies Dance since 2010 on a variety of projects, notably leading Next Choreography 2014-16 - their choreography programme for Young People. Charlotte was a priority artist for Dance Dialogues 2 2012-14 and Tour d'Europe des Choreographes 2010/2011. Charlotte graduated from London Contemporary Dance School in 2003 with a 1st Class BA (Hons). She is also in the midst of building a house in Brighton and hanging out with her young child.Petra Söör (collaborator, Written in the Body) is a dancer, maker and facilitator, working in a range of contexts including with Fevered Sleep, Charlotte Spencer Projects, Simone Kenyon, Robert Clark, Robin Dingemans, Carrie Cracknell and the National Theatre. Alongside solo work her own practice often proposes collaborative processes within a diversity of environments, projects include Sleeping a Walking Mountain and Undanced Dances, currently evolving interests in person-centred approaches to movement, tactile pedagogy and different modalities of touch to support health and wellbeing.Louise Tanoto (collaborator, Written in the Body) is a dance-artist based between Belgium and the UK. For the best part of a decade, Jordan Broatch has already been performing up and down the country in various productions from Ellen Kent operas to playing in Oliver at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Since graduating however, Jordan has established themselves at one of the most exciting newcomers onto the London stage, starring in 2 stellar productions at Southwark Playhouse. Many musical theatre fans saw them redefine the role of J. Bowden Hapgood in Anyone Can Whistle, starring opposite Alex Young and Chrystine Simone. The show was one of the biggest Sondheim revivals since the composer's passing and critics hailed Jordan as a "blazingly engaging" performer. An openly non-binary performer, they have also been a vocal advocate for more diversity and representation of queer characters in the industry. It seemed particularly appropriate that in Lift, he got to play an Avatar - one that is not male or female. Whilst the role was less showy than Hapgood, Jordan remained enthusiastic about the time spent in the show and now proudly calls their company members friends.In this exclusive interview, Jordan Broatch sat down to reflect over the past year so far and expressed his gratitude for getting to make such an impressive debut. It doesn't seem surprising at all to learn that they've been involved in the industry for some time, albeit only recently graduating as an adult performer. Still, they are humble and insists they have more to learn and indeed, we should look forward to whatever Jordan has lined up next. They also describe to us their ambitions for their career, telling us their love for The Other Palace as well as Southwark Playhouse where they made their debut. Jordan also makes it clear they will only work on projects that make them happy and encourages others to do the same, hinting they would also be keen to explore work outside the realms of musical theatre too. It's a fascinating to hear the young graduate speak about his experience and we look forward to watching them continue to flourish in their career.

Román Baca is a classically trained ballet dancer and choreographer. In 2001, recognizing his desire to defend the defenseless, he took a hiatus from dance and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving as a machine-gunner and fire-team leader in Fallujah, Iraq during the Iraq War. After the war, Román returned to dance and co-founded Exit12 Dance Company, which tells veterans' stories choreographically, to increase cross-cultural understanding and heal divisions. Exit12 has delivered its programming in multiple conventional and unconventional performance spaces across the world. Alongside Román's work with Exit12 he is also an Early Career Researcher at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire, a Junior Research Scientist with the USAF/USN Research Unit, and a Ph.D. Candidate at York St. John University in the UK studying the intersection of dance and war. Earlier this year Román worked as an Arts Envoy with the US State Department to Nigeria where he conducted creative workshops with paramilitary, police, and charitable organizations on arts and health. Román completed his MFA at Trinity Laban and was the 2019 awardee of the Selma Jeanne Cohen Dance Lecture Award for his research into the dance and the military. In this episode of the Acrobatic Arts Podcast, Liza Kovacs discusses the question “How much training is too much?” Liza considers herself a dance nerd and is interested in learning mechanisms, knowledge building and pedagogical practices in dance, as well as in the application of periodization concepts in classical training. Since graduating from the National Ballet School of Canada, Liza Kovacs has danced with the National Ballet of Canada, Lalala Human Steps and the BJM as well as collaborating on numerous projects with some of Canada's finest contemporary choreographers. Her passion for dance has led her to a Masters of Arts from the University of Quebec in Montreal and a Masters in Dance Science from Trinity-Laban in London. Since then she has studied kinesthetic anatomy and neuromuscular re-education with Irene Dowd, as well as in physiology, biomechanics, performance psychology, somatic studies and Laban movement analysis. Liza is certified in all levels with ABT's Training Curriculum and is also a certified Pilates instructor and a registered somatic instructor. She joined the teaching team in classical dance of the National Superior Pole of Dance Rosella Hightower in 2019 while developing an online goal setting practice to help aspiring dancers reach their potential, wherever they are. In this episode we talk to Roswitha Chesher and Alexander Whitley about digital dance and technology. Both started their careers with dance training – film maker and photographer Roswitha Chesher at Trinity Laban and choreographer Alexander Whitley at the Royal Ballet School – but they’ve both moved into exploring dance in different formats – on camera, screen and using digital technology. Whilst it’s true to say that over the past year many of us have been on a crash course when it comes to digital and dance, in contrast these two artists have been working within the digital sphere for years and so we decided to invite them on to talk a little bit more about what it is that excites them and find out how we can all learn to explore and use digital technologies more effectively. We begin by discussing the journey we have been on as a sector which has evolved pretty quickly from the kickstart reaction of many to share back-catalogue documentation to the kind of immersive experience offered recently by Rambert with Rooms. Given their familiarity of the digital space and their enviable access to high quality equipment we also probed a little into whether they themselves had felt creative during covid and how they had reacted either individually or as a company to the challenges of the past year. Alex shares his interest in technologies such as virtual and augmented reality and the potential this is offering him and his company to explore new ways of making and presenting work. And Roswitha shares some of the lessons learnt from thirty years making dance on screen. She reflects upon how of late so much of the material she has been asked to work with has been made on the very small (mobile phone) screen. Together we reflect upon how the luxury so many of us experience of having this technology in our back pockets can be deployed creatively when used with thought, care and skill. We talk about the ability to curate an environment when making theatrical work and how in digital this translates to much more nuanced experiences such as directing the focus and the eye. A dance teacher wear’s many hats. Some days we act as a therapist while others we are an advisor. Sometimes a mentor and often a role model. We have all entered into this vocation to change lives, support healthy child development and maybe even inspire the pursuit of a career or education in dance. At the post-secondary and professional level this role does not change much, as professors, artistic directors and ballet masters have indicated that their roles involve aspects of mentorship, guidance and teacher. Today we will take a deeper look into the role of the mentor specifically for early career dance artists. GUEST: After completing her undergraduate training in Dance Theatre at Trinity Laban where she later also completed her master’s degree, Nina Atkinson founded the Loop Dance Company in 1993. In 2004 Nina returned from a two-year sabbatical in New York studying at the Limón Dance Foundation and in 2008 returned to New York to study on the first Limón Teachers Program. Nina’s research interests lie in creating artwork for unusual spaces, from large-scale site-specific work to intimate installation experiences. Nina is, a Lecturer at Canterbury Christchurch University and University of Roehampton and is currently a Visiting Lecturer for Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in their post graduate diploma in Community Dance program. She is currently studying for her PhD at Coventry University.

The conversation: How might attention be considered as a connecting point between contemporary dance practice and Craniosacral Biodynamics? With this question in mind, Michaela invites guest Laressa Dickey to speak about the points of overlap she has found between working with language, movement and in therapeutic settings. Together they discuss some of the basic and more complex principles fundamental to Craniosacral Biodynamics, beginning to explore more broadly the ways that this work can inform our sense of ourselves both in life and as applied to movement-based artistic practice. They also discuss:- interdisciplinary artistic practice: tensions/mysteries between forms as generative gaps- compositional resonance between dance and creative writing- rethinking the traditional client-practitioner relationship- improvisationInterviewee: Laressa Dickey's artistic work lands in the fields of writing, movement/performance, and bodywork. She has published four books of poems as well as several chapbooks. Together with sound artist Andrea Steves, Dickey published RADIO GRAVEYARD ORBIT (Sming Sming), a speculative artist's book about space junk. Her collaborative installation with Ali Gharavi, How to Pass Time with No Reference, was included in the Bergen Assembly 2019. Along with Magdalena Freudenschuss, she was commissioned by Bergen Assembly to create a series of feminist essays on the politics of care, entitled: Re:assembling Emotional Labor: On the Politics of Care. Since 2005, she's been using movement improvisation and performance to inform her writing practice, and vice versa. Her bodywork is influenced by Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy, Body Mind Centering studies, Amerta Movement and an attuned, empathetic imagination.Interviewer: Michaela Gerussi is a Canadian dance artist based between Tkaronto (Toronto, Canada) and London, UK. Michaela's dance practice is nourished by her inquiry into the nervous system, interoception and attunement, in relation to her studies in Biodynamic Craniosacral therapy. Her work considers shifting relationships between people, places and materials, layering subtle perceptual detail with a functional, dynamic approach to movement. Her collaborative performances, intermedia and site-specific works have been presented in Montreal (QC), Toronto (ON), Sherbrooke (QC), Buffalo (NY) and Berlin (DE). A classical musician by training, Elizabeth studied flute and piano at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and then Trinity Laban, London, where an inspirational ‘Business For Musicians' course ultimately proved more interesting than her daily diet of musicology, theory and historical performance practice. She established Worcester-based Encore Communications in 2009, growing the business into a team of experienced, marketing professionals offering a full range of marketing communications services.  Today, Elizabeth is responsible for the day-to-day running of the business, overseeing all Encore Communications' activity and remaining ‘hands-on' with several accounts, delivering integrated media relations, social media, digital marketing, crisis communications and strategy work for clients. Today I am talking to Marrianne Town Smith, a dramatic soprano who found her voice much later than what is the usual trajectory for classical singers. Having had a highly successful career, Marrianne's life in marketing was halted due to changes in her personal circumstances. And then she found singing. In our conversation Marrianne tells about her experiences of stepping into the daunting realm of a music conservatoire in her early forties, she explains of what makes communication a primary skill both in business and in music, and highlights the importance of living life to the full.Marrianne Town Smith started to sing in 2007 as a hobby and distraction from a fast-paced Marketing Management role. Since then she has been on an adventure into opera and classical music, doing as much to learn and grow with a full time job as was possible.  In 2015, she successfully auditioned for a Postgraduate Vocal Studies programme at Trinity Laban and graduated with distinction in 2017.  She has performed many roles in operas and staged scenes at Blackheath Halls Community Opera, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music, AIMS international Singing School and City Lit Opera, as well as regularly performing recitals in venues around London and the south east.  She has sung in masterclasses with Susan Bullock, David Gowland and Christa Ludwig.  In 2018 she sang her first opera role with Opera in the Meantime, singing the Witch in Hänsel und Gretel.  In 2019 she covered the roles of Maddalena in Andrea Chenier, and Madeleine Lidoine in Les Dialogues des Carmélites with Midsummer Opera.  She performed her first role with orchestra singing Donna Anna in Don Giovanni in Sicily at the Mediterannean Opera Studio and Festival in July 2019.  In December last year she sang both the Witch and debuted the role of Getrude with Opera in the Meantime's revival production of Hänsel und Gretel.  2020 started with two Requiems and the opportunity to add oratorio roles to her resume, with Verdi's Requiem and the Brahms's Requiem, both conducted by Peter Fender.  And then sadly Covid-19 took over and all other plans for this year have been postponed.  However, she remains optimistic—she has been working away in her garden “She Shack” learning new roles and repertoire.  She is also having online coaching with amazing International singers and stage directors as well as continuing to work with her wonderful teacher Raymond Connell.  Website: www.marrianne.co.ukFacebook: www.facebook.com/marriannetownsmithsoprano

Od takrat nastopa s številnimi svetovnimi orkestri, gostuje s solističnimi koncerti na prestižnih glasbenih odrih in festivalih. Več let je bila članica klavirskega tria Greenwich, skupaj s čelistom Stjepanom Hauserjem (nekoč član 2Cellos) in pianistko Joko Misumi. Danes poučuje na londonskem konservatoriju za glasbo in balet Trinity Laban ter snema za radio BBC. Lana Trotovšek igra na violino Pietra Antonia dalla Coste iz leta 1750. Agnes Bakucz Canario is a Portuguese/Hungarian movement artist based in London who works is often multidisciplinary and collaborative. Agnes’ work focuses on searching for tenderness and flows with regards to human relationships, flows, money, borders and water. Having lived and worked in four different waterborne cities (Lisbon, Budapest, Inverness and London) has made water, as a source, incredibly important to Agnes’ being and practice, using it as a means to connecting to spaces and the people that inhabit it. Agnes has previously performed Isabel Lewis’ ‘Occassions’ at the Tate Modern (Tanks), Bouchra Ouizguen’s ‘Corbeaux’ the Tate Modern and more recently, Hagit Yakira’s ‘If One Keeps Walking’ at Trinity Laban. Hear Agnes talk about the different processes of performance through working intimately with people in underground bunkers as well as how their own process of choreography develops with the passing of time and their deep connection to music that drives their creativity forward. The fifteenth Thoroughly Good Podcast was recorded in August 2018 at the British Youth Opera rehearsals in London South Bank University. British Youth Opera - an opera training company for graduates and young professionals was founded in 1987. It has annual programme of productions, masterclasses and workshops for new opera talent. Amongst its alumni features Laura Attridge who appeared on the Thoroughly Good Podcast about Trinity Laban's production of Rape of Lucretia a few episodes back. This year British Youth Opera stage two productions at the Peacock Theatre from 1st September - Stravinsky's Rakes Progress and Jeremy Sams' Enchanted Island. You'll hear from the Enchanted Island cast and production team talk about the experience of working in British Youth Opera later in this podcast. First, is a conversation with Executive Director David Balcombe. Performances of The Enchanted Island are on Saturday 1, Wednesday 5 and Friday 7 September at 7.00pm at the Peacock Theatre on Portugal Street. Alison Swann talks about her experience in using movement and dance to support all areas of the primary school curriculum. Alison is a Dance in Education Specialist with 30 years experience. She trained at Laban (now Trinity Laban) in Contemporary Technique and Movement Analysis. Dance Educates strives to raise standards through a multisensory approach to learning, supporting teachers in delivering your curriculum through  cross-curricular dance (http://www.danceeducates.co.uk/advice/what-is-cross-curricular-learning/)  and movement sessions. We believe an exciting, social and creative learning environment is the key to children and young people engaging and retaining knowledge enabling them to be confident learners and building skills for life.
