‘For if a person fatigued with long and hard labour, or with a violent agitation of the mind, takes a good dish of chocolate, he shall perceive almost instantly that his faintness shall cease, and his strength shall be recovered' The Cacao tree was first domesticated by the Olmecs in Mesoamerica, possibly as early as 1500 BC, and was then first encountered by Europeans in the 16th century, when it is said that the Aztec Emperor Montezuma welcomed Hernan Cortes into his dominion with a mysterious dark drink. Indeed, Chocolate was originally consumed as a drink, and was a cornerstone of Aztec life, whether used as currency or as part of religious rituals. Brought back by the conquistadors to Europe, Chocolate slowly spread through the continent, particularly among the ruling classes, up until the industrial revolution of the 19th century, when technical advancements allowed for chocolate to be made into a food, at a far lower cost. This paved the way for Quaker families, such as the Cadburys or the Frys, keen to find an alternative to alcohol, to make the snack available to the masses… Tom and Dominic have partnered with Cadbury, in celebration of their 200th year anniversary, to explore the story of how chocolate, from its Mesoamerican origins, became a British favourite. Over the coming months, Cadbury will be announcing more plans for its 200th anniversary year, including ways that fans nationwide can get involved in the celebrations. This week we have James Cadbury joining me in my kitchen to talk all things chocolate! Being the great great grandson of John Cadbury the Founder of Cadbury which we all know and love, it's not surprising that James was inspired by his families history and story. James founded in Love Cocoa in 2017 which is a luxury chocolate brand focusing on gifting and offering a more premium chocolate experience, after taking Love Cocoa to Dragons Den the brand has gone from strength to strength with the hope of Love Cocoa stores opening in the future. In 2020 James noticed a real gap in the plant-based chocolate space, we were letting oat milk take over our lives, but no one was using oat milk to make chocolate. Therefore as Cadbury was the first brand to add dairy milk to their chocolate (hence the name Cadbury Dairy Milk), James thought that he would be one of the first to start adding Oat Milk to cocoa in order to create the same delicious creamy chocolate experience that the plant-based market was missing. With a lot of consumers now opting for oat milk over dairy milk due to taste preference as well as the sustainability bonus, it seemed the obvious option and he was completely right! HIP (which stands for Happiness In Plants) was born 18 months later in 2021 and over two years it has gone from strength to strength. In this conversation James and I discuss the following topics:Growing up in the Cadbury householdThe influence Cadburys' has had on his career The reasons behind starting Love Cocoa in 2017His experience on Dragons DenWhy James started HIPThe process of starting HIPHow the two companies run alongside each other How the plant-based space is looking in confectionaryEthics and how James runs his two businesses in a sustainable wayHow James has ensured that there is no plastic used in the packaging of HIPWhat's next for both Love Cocoa and HIPLast Meal To checkout HIP head to Sainsburys or check them out online To checkout Love Cocoa head to John Lewis or check them out onlineThis episode was hosted by Georgia Symonds and produced by Maisie Pepitt Hosted on Acast. Her most recent role was to cover the HR Director's maternity leave but how all the different experiences she had acquired over the years really set her up to succeed in a leadership role. There was so much to discuss that we couldn't squeeze it all into just one episode so we'll be doing part 2 in a few weeks where we'll talk about life through an acquisition and operating on the global landscape. However, there's an abundance of insights to take from this episode alone so I hope you enjoy it!If you'd like to contact Jane with any questions or want any advice then here is her email - jane.murphy@alexander-dennis.comSupport the show

W/C 11th April 2022 What we think of as an Easter egg is not in point of fact that old a tradition. The first examples can be traced back to the early parts of the nineteenth century, predominantly in France & Germany. Although Cadbury's were producing chocolate for the European market from the mid 1840's, they didn't in fact produce an egg until 1875, building the range at a modest pace until they had about twenty on offer at the turn of the twentieth century. It was the launch of the Dairy Milk chocolate variety in 1905 that was the game-changer. It was an instant hit with the public, driving a huge increase in demand for Easter eggs from then on in. Cadburys sell roughly 25-30 million boxed eggs a year, making up a third of the overall total. Stay safe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FT62Gwv70kM (Chocolate - Snow Patrol)

From the Lavender many products are made and are all available from the farm shop and online. Different types of lavenderThere are many different types of lavender, with plenty of varieties and colours to choose from.Lavandula Augustifolia (English Lavender) has several varieties and is a popular hardy shrub:Hidcote with its stunning dark purple flowers, remains a gardener's favourite and is suitably hardy for the Irish climate.  Once fully mature, the plant will grow to a height and spread of about 1 metre/3 feet. We call it ‘Cadburys' Purple' and its our best seller.Munstead is another popular choice, with paler mauve flowers and a long lasting scent. Typically Munstead grows bigger than Hidcote. There are also pink varieties of lavender (Miss Katherine, Rosea, Hidcote Pink to name a few) and also white varieties such as Edelweiss White. Planting several colours together creates a stunning display in any garden. Our two acre field was planted with Dutch lavender ‘Grosso' and English Lavender ‘Munstead' (approximately 6,500!) in May 2013.  Grosso is a hybrid variety, a cross between a true lavender and a Lavandin known for high yield oil production and a strong scent.During Spring 2018 we  planted an additional 3 acre field with over 7,000 plants.  Using English Lavender Hidcote and English Lavender Rosea to create a beautiful display of rows of dark Purple and Pink flowers for visitors to enjoy.  As lavender is slow to mature, this field will take approximately 3 years to grow.Website: https://wexfordlavenderfarm.com/about/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wexfordlavender/?hl=enFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/WexfordLavenderFarm/There will be a blog post on this episode very soon on my website. Join Niki Tudge as she chats with Victoria Stilwell. It's always a pleasure for me to host and chat with Victoria Stilwell. The conversation moved quickly through comparing Cadburys to Hershey's chocolate. We covered the important topic of how we, the British, define biscuits versus the term more commonly used in the US, cookies. We did soon reach the important topics and had some thought-provoking discussions about dog breeding, puppy mills and much more. Thank you, Victoria, for all the great work you do, for being a great guest and for always being a fabulous sport! And why do Cadbury Eggs in America taste so different than the ones in the UK? On this mini-sode, we're going to give you a taste of why chocolate has changed over the years, and fill you in on exactly what's inside a Cadbury Egg.

Hello, I'm Ava! A little about me… I'm a great believer that we are all here to serve a purpose with the limited time we have on this earth. Over the years I have truly transformed my life. From leaving home when I was 17 years old, living within my comfort zone and avoiding uncomfortable conversations to now, living a positive, abundant, FULL life. Over the past few years I've set myself goals that included personal and business achievements and I achieved them all, plus more! I have grown my small beauty business from my spare room into a recognized and respected brand within the beauty industry. I have employed staff, educated and mentored hundreds of students who travel from all over the UK (even from overseas!), judged lash and brow competitions, been a keynote speaker for events, and I have hosted events within the industry. Soon to start my degree in Psychology Counselling I am passionate about making a positive impact on the world. Alongside my multifaceted career I am also a mother and the things that make me the happiest are being in nature with my loved ones, exploring the beauty around me and sitting on my sofa dipping a Cadburys chocolate bar into a cuppa tea!

Mark joined us in his finery of a Denton branded tracksuit, peaky blinder cap complete with bobble on top and of course trainers and sunnies. What more could we have expected from one of the most incredible London ad men over the last 40 years. Although don’t call him an ad man… he makes films…. “Please send your scripts to www.thomasthomasfilms.co.uk”.Please visit https://getbehindthebillboard.com/?p=340 for the images to follow along.Mark joined us with gifts [others take note, we like gifts], we talked briefly about his book the Power of Purelity. You can buy it here, and Mark will chuck in some free gifts… www.coy-com.com/shop Mark reckons there’s a revival going on in Outdoor, some great work sitting proudly from the rest… Mark credits Nils Leonards Uncommon for their work on Habito, Droga5 for Coal Drops Yard, and Atomic for their work on the Royal Opera House posters: Marks first billboard was for Milk Tray, something he concepted up with the late and great Norman Icke [who came up with the original idea for the milk tray man] while Mark was ‘just a visualiser’ at Leo Burnett. Within weeks Mark was hanging out in New York ready to shoot on top of the JCPenney building. Mark met his long term creative partners Chris Palmer on set for a TV shoot, a set he shouldn’t have been on! The shoot was for Cadbury’s creme egg, and he’d slipped one of his ideas in with the creative teams one. On a sound stage at Pinewood he bumped into Chris, and he got Mark into BBH within months. Mark recalls John Hegarty hating half of his book in the interview…. But Chris helped nudge John in the right direction. 4 1/2 years later… Mark and Chris left to setup Simons Palmer Denton Clemmow Johnson where they worked on Nike among others. We talked about all of the poster work they did…. Originally they were engaged only for Soccer… but soon worked on Rugby, basketball, running, Olympics and many many others. Of all of them, Mark picked out the Ian Wright football poster. ‘Behind every great goalkeeper there’s a ball from Ian Wright’. We talked about Advantage Sampras, Charles Barkley and the Marathon no U turns. With the latter 2 styled graphically on political propaganda posters. We moved on to Wrangler, and a lesson to all you creatives out there. If you believe in your concepts keep pushing as hard as you can. If you can invest in your idea and to help sell the concept to your client it might help get great work away. Then onto another important lesson. Paying your suppliers back for the proactive work you get them working on. Having Malcom shoot the test work, led to more work for the agency and therefore more for Malcom.  Asda we spent a bit of time talking about a favourite execution for Free Range Eggs, featuring a model made chicken on a motorbike, escaping the chicken farm in the style of The Great Escape. The humour is there on all of the executions.Heineken too had that humour running through it.Top Tip: Don’t leave it on a Piece a paper. Mark gave us the example of his Samson Batteries, which he’d visualised up as a poster. He managed to turn that poster into 3 TV commercials!Favourite Billboard of all time. BEANS MEANS HEINZ. Bring back the slogan!

Our hero, young Brendan lives in a remote medieval outpost under siege from barbarian raids. But a new life of adventure beckons when a celebrated master illuminator arrives from foreign lands carrying an ancient but unfinished book, brimming with secret wisdom and powers. To help complete the magical book, Brendan has to overcome his deepest fears on a dangerous quest that takes him into the enchanted forest where mythical creatures hide. It is here that he meets the fairy Aisling, a mysterious young wolf-girl, who helps him along the way. But with the barbarians closing in, will Brendan's determination and artistic vision illuminate the darkness and show that enlightenment is the best fortification against evil? Roger Carr, who is to stand down as chairman of Cadbury following the recent takeover by Kraft Foods, gave a Distinguished Speaker Seminar at Saïd Business School on 9 February on the subject of hostile bids and takeovers. Carr delivered his verdict on an event that he said had enraged a portion of the British public, ignited politicians, distressed employees, amply rewarded shareholders and perhaps highlighted some pitfalls of the system and the rules under which directors and Boards discharge their corporate responsibilities. Carr described himself as a committed free marketer who had no quarrel with the Anglo American way but suggested that something had happened to the system to tip the playing field towards short termism. The popular myth of Cadbury, Carr said, was as an old fashioned, family business run by chocolatiers with Quaker principles. Despite this, Cadbury had become a global business whose success owed more to acquisition, demergers and disposals in the last ten years than the evolutionary developments of the previous 150...
