Brett R. Smith, Ph. D. is the Founding Research Director of the the L.I.F.E Research Lab at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio (L.I.F.E =Leading the Integration of Faith & Entrepreneurship). His program explores how spirituality and business can indeed be interwoven together for a more fulfilling professional and personal journey. The program's birth at a public University was unlikely, but after hearing about Brett's journey, his calling to teach, his deep faith, and the seeds that God planted in his life, it all makes perfect sense. Matt and Brett delve into his early roles, experiences with corporate and start ups, and finally his transformation to Miami University where, with his commitment and drive, he has led a flourishing program that has opened the minds of students in a unique and powerful classroom experience. The L.I.F.E. curriculum provides guidance, experience, and knowledge in social entrepreneurship and how faith can live in that environment. For anyone who has experience in starting something new, you know there will be high and lows. What the L.I.F.E. program suggests is that our faith can be an asset for survival. Faith is what let Brett to Miami, it is what shines light into his marriage to Laura (guest on 11/16/20) and into his role as a father to four kids, and it is what continues to provide guide posts as new challenges and opportunities fall on the path at Miami. Brett candidly shares some obstacles including how he faced health scares and question marks, but also how these challenges and set backs have been stepping stones to growth and insights to making decisions, arming him with more awareness that our clock is always ticking. This episode is a must-listen for all who are seeking courage to listen to our callings and are curious about how to harmoniously blend faith with their careers. To learn more about Brett, visit the Miami of Ohio University website. His achievements have also been featured in Time, Business Week, Financial Times,  CNN, MSNBC and he has been asked to speak at the United Nations, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Tedx Youth, and a number of leading universities. Comic book producer and artist Brett R. Smith joins Wes to talk about the state of conservatism in entertainment and media. Liberals played the long game in Hollywood and media for decades, investing in movies, television, music, animation and comics to seed progressive ideas through pop culture. Resulting in conservative ideals and principals being wiped out of the pop culture landscape. It's gotten to the point where expressing conservative ideas cost actors, producers, artists and musicians can cost creators their careers. What can conservatives due to be competitive in promoting their principals using pop culture? How much grind do right-leaning creators have to make up? Who can step up and turn the tide in today's culture war? Wes and Brett R. Smith talk about why conservatives need to fight to promote their ideals and principals in entertainment and media.   Black Tide Rising Vol. 1 Indiegogo Campaign Link: https://igg.me/at/blacktiderising/x#/   Support Thinking Critical at Ko-fi. Really big. Really, really big. To get an idea, go to https://travellermap.com/ Classic Traveller is “hard sci-fi” of the 70s and early 80s. Computers were huge and home computers weren’t a widespread thing, no internet, etc. For example: Some ship schematics have large area for computers. Lack of faster than light communications led to a more feudal / regional governmental system throughout the empire Weapons run the range from rocks to firearms to lasers. Daggers and knives are still very common because you don’t want to use lasers or bullets on a ship Ships usually carried a lot of sand. If enemy ships appeared, they could drop sand that would act as chaff / defense against lasers No hit points, damage is deducted from attributes Similar attributes to D&D, however instead of Wisdom and Charisma there was Education and Social Standing. Those could be codified, where the other two are more subjective No experience, no levels… advancement is through wealth, status, etc. Skills CAN be changed during adventuring by going back college or joining the military, etc. Or the Imperium goes to war and veterans get called back to service. Certain attributes can be changed during play… for example you marry into nobility They chose six siders because people already had them at home and would not need to buy polyhedrals Traveller appealed to David when he was younger because it cost less than the D&D books
