Welcome to the latest episode of the WAB Podcast. In this episode, we explored TEDx Youth at WAB. Joining us were Kristina and Jeremy, two senior students and co-organizers of TEDx Youth this school year, and Abril from Grade 12 and Elsa from Grade 8, who shared their ideas at this year's event. They discussed their journeys, challenges, and favorite moments, offering a behind-the-scenes look at what it took to bring TEDx to life, and how it is a platform for growth, courage, and self-discovery. Jeremy introduced TEDx Youth at WAB as a fully student-led initiative that has been running for over a decade. What made the event truly special was that every aspect—from organizing to speaking—was entirely managed by students.  Kristina and Jeremy, both in their final year of high school, have been leading the TEDx Youth club for the past two years. They first joined as speakers, and over time, fell in love with the experience. Their passion eventually led them to become co-leaders of the club.  Kristina emphasized that TEDx gives students the chance to share ideas they are truly passionate about. This year's theme, "Clarity in Complexity," reflected the increasingly complex world students navigate today, shaped by the rise of AI and other global changes. "Through this TEDx, we try to find clarity within that complexity," she said.   For Abril, a first-time speaker in Grade 12, the platform offered an opportunity to explore a theme close to her heart: finding focus in a world dominated by social media. She had always been fascinated by self-improvement and the search for meaning amid digital distractions. Initially intimidated by public speaking, Abril gradually built her confidence through the rehearsals and feedback sessions organized by the TEDx team. She saw the event as a safe space to grow, learn, and challenge herself.  Elsa, an eighth-grader, chose to speak about the courage to say no. Her idea stemmed from a challenging summer, during which she learned to set boundaries and overcome personal struggles. As a two-time participant, Elsa faced a new challenge this year—speaking alone at an event where most participants were high school students. However, with the support of her peers and the organizers, she found the confidence to craft her speech and deliver it with confidence.  If you want to hear more about our students' inspiring TEDx journey, don't miss this episode!

In this episode, I have the pleasure of speaking with Diana Lutfi, a bioethics and legal scholar, who recently authored an amicus brief on behalf of the detransitioners community in the Supreme Court case, United States of America v. Jonathan Skrmetti. We dive deep into the implications of this landmark case, which challenges Tennessee's prohibition on “gender-affirming care” for minors. Diana explains how this case could set a precedent affecting similar laws in 26 states, raising critical questions about the future of sex trait modification. We discuss the complexities surrounding the concept of "standards of care" in pediatric gender treatment, particularly how these standards can be influenced by political agendas rather than solid evidence. Diana emphasizes the importance of recognizing biological differences in healthcare and the inherent discrimination that occurs in medical treatment based on sex. We also explore the tension between parental rights, state regulations, and the autonomy of minors in making life-altering decisions.Throughout our conversation, we aim to uncover the broader implications of this case for healthcare policy and the ethical considerations surrounding permanent sex trait alteration for minors. Join us as we navigate these challenging topics and seek to understand the stakes involved for individuals and families facing these critical decisions.Read the amicus brief here.Donate to support Diana's work.Diana Lutfi, JD, MSHCM, CPHQ is a legal and bioethics scholar, healthcare professional, and advocate of patients' and providers' rights. During the pandemic, Diana successfully challenged and changed Colorado Nursing Board rules, decreasing the red tape around reinstatements. Diana has avidly worked to protect patients' rights amidst healthcare policy, helped physicians write policy proposals, and most recently authored a Supreme Court amicus on behalf of the larger detransitioners community. In her professional career, Diana was a human subjects researcher, healthcare administrator, educator, and projects consultant. She has extensively investigated issues around access, autonomy, bodily integrity, and coercion in healthcare. “Exposure is the birthplace of possibility”  When my guest Lamarr Womble said this my mind exploded.   It made me think about how many more possibilities I'm missing because I haven't dared to expose myself to something new.  How about you?  Are you exposing yourself to new things?  Could this exposure be the birthplace of not just new possibilities but of new dreams?  This ability to expose yourself to new things is just one of the skills that Lamarr opened up my mind to in our conversation about the skills we need to make our dreams come true.   Overall this conversation made me realize that this is a missing piece from what I've been sharing with you here at Reframe to Create. While I always encourage you to create and get on with building your dream life, Lamarr shows that there is a step before that.  Building a solid foundation of skills that will support that dream.   We dig deeper into what this looks like.   In this episode you'll learn:  The foundational skills you need to build to support your dreams  The power of invested mentors who will create the space for your experimentation   How your job can be a skill builder and supporter for your dreams  And much more!  If you're ready to go after your dreams and create beautiful things, but can't figure out why you keep getting stuck, Lamarr may have the answer to why.   Listen in with your notebook and pen to enjoy an informative and inspiring conversation!    About my guest: Lamarr Womble is a nationally recognized Keynote Speaker, Executive Coach, Leadership expert and co-host of The Men Up Podcast Host.  He helps audiences to access a more fulfilled life by helping them to discover “it's not just about what you do but who you want to be”. Ambassador Lambert & Anne Calteux explain some complexities of the European Commission / EU, and Artnit Day, Pedro Castilho & Tiara Ernzen represent the upcoming TEDx Youth event. From the start of this year, it is Belgium's turn to hold the presidency of the Council of the European Union for the 13th time. Ambassador Thomas Lambert, Belgian Ambassador to Luxembourg, tells us more about this role, which switches between the 27 member states of the EU every six months. They work in a group of three, and this trio, working across an 18 month period includes Spain and Hungary. So it ran from Spain, now the baton has passed to Belgium, and it will end with Hungary before the next trio is formed. It's not so easy to understand the complex machine that comprises the European Commission, the European Parliament and the European Council, not even for those who are part of the system. Anne Calteux, Head of the European Commission Representation in Luxembourg, gives us a brief explainer and emphasises why it's so important to use our democratic right to vote in this year's European Elections. Protect, Strengthen, Prepare The aims of Belgium's common programme with Spain and Hungary are trifold: Protect, Strengthen, Prepare. Ambassador Lambert elaborates on the timely nature of each. We've just had the Val Duchesse Social Partners summit and he also explains the historic importance of this dialogue. Each Presidency is an opportunity for the spotlight to dance around the 27 member states. Consequently, there are more cultural events available to those in or visiting Belgium at the moment - a good place to travel for Carnival or Easter for instance. Anne Calteux's work helps give a local Luxembourg link to the voice of the Europe. She helps amplify the messages of President Ursula von der Leyen, to develop a green, digital and geopolitical union. https://belgian-presidency.consilium.europa.eu/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/thomas-lambert-334b474/ https://lu.linkedin.com/in/anne-calteux-714525b TEDx Kolléisch Youth Arnit Dey is the co-organiser of TEDx Kolléisch Youth. With him as guests are Pedro Castilho from Verbalius, a coaching expert on public speaking, and student speaker Tiara Ernzen. Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will

305 The Anthem of Poetry   The arts have always been impactful and meaningful to humanity, however one stands above all the rest in this episode and that is poetry. Poetry conveys emotions and thoughts that are often difficult to put into words, making it one of the most important avenues for both emotional understanding and human connection.  In this episode Sarah Elkins and Maya Williams discuss the importance of poetry and how Maya's experiences and life paths shaped them into the artist they are.    Highlights You'll never know who you can teach or inspire. Find the communities that welcome and love you. Give yourself permission and encouragement to seek what you need and will work for you. Do the work, especially when it's hard. We are all full of contradictions, meaning it is even more important to hold true to our values.  Spite can be a great motivator, especially in succeeding and surviving.   Quotes “I remember telling my therapist, “Oh well, I know that not every space is perfect, right? So I just need to find the first thing that's available to me.” And then my therapist tells me, “You do not have to go to a house of worship that does not love you.”” “It makes me feel upset when someone says something like, “Oh I tried going to a therapist but I just felt worse afterwards so I stopped going.” and it's like that's part of the work! That's part of the work! I can understand not wanting to continue with a therapist if they said something bigoted or they didn't do their jobs, right? But they're doing their job and you feel worse afterwards, you need to give it more time.” “The most impactful friends in my life are the ones who tell me like it is.”   Dear Listeners it is now your turn, I'm curious to know if you have been interested in poetry. Have you ever found it interesting or intriguing or inspiring? And if you haven't, why did you stop looking for poetry that might actually inspire you? I challenge you to find a poem in the next two days that really resonates, a poem you can get into, dive into, maybe find some of your own healing in it. It could be from one of Maya Williams' books, it could be searching “Poems about,” and then putting your keyword in. Find your poem that can be your anthem for a little while, and when that gets tired find another to be your anthem for a little while, just as you would with song lyrics or a song. Don't forget to purchase a book of poetry from your local bookstore to support your local poets. And, as always, thank you for listening.    About Maya (From her website) Maya Williams (ey/em, they/them, and she/her) is a religious Black multiracial nonbinary suicide survivor who is currently an Ashley Bryan Fellow and the seventh Poet Laureate of Portland, Maine . Maya's debut poetry collection, Judas & Suicide, is available through Game Over Books . In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. His program explores how spirituality and business can indeed be interwoven together for a more fulfilling professional and personal journey. The program's birth at a public University was unlikely, but after hearing about Brett's journey, his calling to teach, his deep faith, and the seeds that God planted in his life, it all makes perfect sense. Matt and Brett delve into his early roles, experiences with corporate and start ups, and finally his transformation to Miami University where, with his commitment and drive, he has led a flourishing program that has opened the minds of students in a unique and powerful classroom experience. The L.I.F.E. curriculum provides guidance, experience, and knowledge in social entrepreneurship and how faith can live in that environment. For anyone who has experience in starting something new, you know there will be high and lows. What the L.I.F.E. program suggests is that our faith can be an asset for survival. Faith is what let Brett to Miami, it is what shines light into his marriage to Laura (guest on 11/16/20) and into his role as a father to four kids, and it is what continues to provide guide posts as new challenges and opportunities fall on the path at Miami. Brett candidly shares some obstacles including how he faced health scares and question marks, but also how these challenges and set backs have been stepping stones to growth and insights to making decisions, arming him with more awareness that our clock is always ticking. This episode is a must-listen for all who are seeking courage to listen to our callings and are curious about how to harmoniously blend faith with their careers. However, David Schnurman reminds us that when you go a layer deeper, you notice that everyone has fears (even if they seem fearless on the outside).  Our circumstances may not be the same, but we've all gone through challenges in order to grow, and we've all faced fear along the way. But David says you can work through your fears by removing labels from a situation. When you label a situation as good or bad, you often become paralyzed by fear. But when you avoid labels, you can take action knowing that whatever the outcome is, it's not good or bad — it's just one step in your path to success.  In this episode of The Lawyer's Edge Podcast, Elise Holtzman talks with David Schnurman, CEO of Lawline, about strategies to overcome fears, focus on your goals, and accelerate your journey to success. David discusses the challenges he faced while scaling his business, how coaching can greatly impact your journey, and why it's important to always have a beginner's mindset.

Happy Day, Friend! On this week’s podcast episode I’m talking about toxic positivity. Toxic positivity is a form of communication that can invalidate the complexity of our emotional terrain. As I discuss in this episode, it’s the tendency to invalidate difficult emotions such as anger, fear, frustration, sadness, and grief. I wanted to spend some time on this topic because while I’m a big advocate of having a positive growth mindset and feel the research is clear that it’s important to our overall success, it’s not at the expense of naming, managing, and processing difficult emotions. We must have the skillset to cultivate a positive mindset and outlook, and walk through difficult emotions and challenges if we desire to reach our goals, have healthy relationships, and experience authentic joy in our lives. It’s key to building resilience, and whole success. In this episode I define what toxic positivity is, how to recognize it in our communication and others’ communication, and I’m sharing some pro-active tips to transform any toxic positivity communication tendencies into a style that honors the complexity of our emotional landscape, thus contributing to our overall success and well-being. When we honor the complexity of our emotional landscape and lean into difficult emotions, we create more opportunity and possibility for connection and creativity in our lives. ReferencesI referenced the work of Susan David, Ph.D. and her book Emotional Agility, and for more information you can click here. I also referenced the TEDx Youth talk by Abria Joseph about Removing Negative Self-Talk, and for more information about that talk you can click here. If you’re interested in my book, Today’s Gonna Be Awesomesauce, that I referenced as well, click here, or see the links below.

Some of the brightest minds in the boardroom feel out of their depth when it comes to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) topics, but few readily admit to it. That’s why unique individuals like our latest podcast guest, Crystal Dilworth, are essential. Dr Crystal Dilworth is a science communicator, presenter and business consultant, recognised worldwide for her work in translating very complex technical jargon that comes with STEM industries into simplified language that just about anyone can understand. Her wildly successful TEDxYouth talk, “The Myth of the Scientist”, TV and movie roles have seen her excel in an industry that has long seemed mysterious and enigmatic. She’s interviewed some of our most famous STEM celebrities, including Elon Musk. Now, she gets to be on the other side of the mic. Through Crystal’s work, she is able to facilitate dialogue, build consensus and create understanding around the science side of business, removing that mystery. Breaking down barriers is her forte, and she has a knack for making science enjoyable all. This ability comes at a time when science and technology are infiltrating all aspects of our lives, and having even a very general understanding of them is imperative to progress. Do you want to know how you can better understand and appreciate science and technology? Listen to this episode. Co-hosts Paul Smith and Anna Byrne also quiz Crystal on things like: The communication problems most often seen in boardrooms How and why these problems occur, and what we can do to diminish them How information can so often be misconstrued The lack of any deliberate structure around how professionals in business communicate with one another, and why this creates new difficulties What are the more imaginative ways we can teach new information in boardrooms? When does communication become exclusive in the boardroom? How your board can enhance communication skills and take them to the next level The benefits of better communication How generational gaps can create communication errors Crystal’s tips and recommendations for anyone struggling to become more literate with STEM concepts Links: Future Directors Website: https://futuredirectors.com/ Paul Smith LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/futurepaulsmith/ Anna Byrne LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/anna-byrne-13901262/ Crystal Dilworth Twitter: https://twitter.com/PolycrystalhD?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor Crystal Dilworth LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/crystal-dilworth-phd-4405659b/

Classroom 2.0 LIVE webinar with Curran Dee and Marialice Curran of @CurranCentral, April 1, 2017. We are so excited to welcome Curran Dee as our special guest presenter for this webinar in his presentation entitled "Digital Citizenship from a Kid's Perspective." Curran will be sharing information about DigCitKids which was co-created with his mom as a forum for digital citizenship for kids by kids. He'll be sharing his experiences and projects with #digcitkids including their pledge and monthly challenges which are designed to amplify student voice and leadership. Curran is the Chief Kid Officer of DigCitKids (digcitkids.com) who advocates for parents and children to learn alongside each other to develop skills digital natives and digital immigrants alike need to use on a daily basis. His past advocacy work includes Twitter chats, a TEDxYouth speech in Burlington, Mass. Most recently, Curran was interviewed on TeacherCast discussing the idea of kids as global citizens. “When kids are passionate about creating change, they need to learn with the world. That happens digitally,” he said. “I think even kids in elementary school should be able to have a voice and be able to make connections beyond the classroom walls.” In the future, he has plans to do workshops offline that will help kids of all ages connect, collaborate, learn, understand and solve problems safely through offline activities and online discussions. Curran works alongside his mom, Marialice B.F.X. Curran, Ph.D., founder of the Digital Citizenship Institute and cofounder of the Digital Citizenship Summit, both based in Connecticut. Dr. Curran has partnered with her eleven-year old and the two are recognized professionally as a mother/son digital citizenship team. The dynamic duo model best practices while working with parents, educators, students and community organizations. “As a teacher, principal and associate professor, my most rewarding work has been advocating with my son as he paves the way for a new generation.” Teachers, parents, students, colleges and ed/tech industry experts are learning from their example. “Our mission at DigCitKids is to keep asking a wider audience, ‘How are you using technology every day to make a difference for your community, for other kids and for the world?’ and then showing them how to get started,” She is passionate about empowering students around the world with positive and practical solutions. An international speaker and named one of the Top 10 Digital Citizenship bloggers to follow in 2014 by Common Sense Media, Curran co-founded (2011) and moderates the digital citizenship #digcit chat on Twitter and also serves on the leadership team for the Digital Citizenship PLN through ISTE. http://www.digcitkids.com/ https://twitter.com/digcitkids

Kevin Rabinovich has been working with TEDx since 2011 when he was 13. His story of how he's united 50 high schools in the state of South Carolina is inspiring. He started watching talks in the 4th grade and is now a mentor at 19. He's the very example of on the job training, having worked on six TEDx events and being the organizer for the past four years. He believes that producing an event by youth, and for youth, provides a unique opportunity for time-stressed students to share ideas. He says that there's not a venue for idea-sharing for this age group. We love their concept of IDEA GRANTS. When I asked Kevin about his superpower, he wasn't keen on admitting one, rather he said, "I'm accidentally good at a lot of what it takes I guess." Right. Another organizer that makes me feel like a slacker. I asked him what impact the TEDx experience has had on his life, "I now realize how important ideas are to society, and it's gotten me to look at many different career options that I'd never have considered before."

Randy Bretz, the Organizer for TEDxLincoln, suggests that the secret to managing a TEDx is that he doesn't feel like you have to do everything, yourself. He's very comfortable asking for help. For anything and everything. Tell us a bit about your background and your TEDx origin story. Randy has a long history in the TV production business, which makes producing a TEDx easy for him. He started his first TEDx in 2011. A friend of his mentioned that TEDx licenses were available and he saw this as an opportunity to marry his production expertise with high-quality content. How many TEDx events have you produced or worked with? Randy's done six main events, 2 TEDxWomen, 2 TEDxYouth, 4 TEDxLive - viewing parties and 10 Salons. What makes your TEDx unique? High-quality video production with a locally oriented feel that mirrors what happens in the community of Lincoln, Nebraska What's your superpower? Producing What was the biggest surprise for you while working on your event? That there was much more to it than he thought. Every event has its challenges, what was the biggest dragon you had to overcome? Getting discouraged. There's so much to do; he looks for inspiration to find the energy to get through the to-do list. What's one piece of advice you have for veteran organizers? For first-timers? Don't do it all by yourself. Learn how to step away. Looking forward to your next event, what excites you the most? TEDxLincolnYouth in August 2017 and getting to work with the kids. What's a TEDx event that you'd like to attend? TEDxWashingtonDC Finally, the show is called Hacking the Red Circle, so what's your best hack? Don't be afraid to ask people to help you, or be on stage, or partner, or give you funding. Just ask.

"Everyone can relate to sitting in a spot and you don't feel like you're supposed to be there and you're meant for something more. You could be 45 years old sitting at a desk in an office and you feel like you're selling yourself short and you've been lying to yourself your whole life about who you are and what you're capable so you're just limiting your dreams." -Jake Ducey   We've all experienced a moment when we're not happy with our life. We've reached a moment when we know we need something else to become who we're truly meant to be. However, it can be difficult to know where to begin and how we can accomplish our goals. Today,three-timed publish author, speaker, and leader, Jake Ducey, shares how we can create a life that we love. To get started on living a fulfilling life, Jake will explain how the subconscious mind works to help our intuition, how to identify and own our vibrations, and how to live a life that we love.  Take Advantage of Your Subconscious Mind To be successful and live a life that you love, it's all about living a life that you feel good about. To do this, you must listen to your own thoughts and senses. Unfortunately, many people are limited by their mindsets and their emotions are controlling their thoughts. Not only is it important to understand how our thinking process works, but how we can use our subconscious to our advantage. The unconscious mind is a wonderful thing and it acts as a filtering device for outside reality. Outside reality can be anything from thoughts about love, body image, money, or career that we hear from other people, the public media, and even Facebook. And these pieces of outside reality create barriers that keep us from listening to our inner reality and intuition. Once you begin to listen to your intuition and emotions, your inner vibrations can tell you the truths about who you are and who you're meant to be. Learn to Listen to Your Inner Vibrations   "When you disconnect from your senses, you get in touch with a deeper vision. You can see your life and who you want to be and who you're supposed to be. You can hear the intuition and the soul and the heart speak to you in a faint voice that you can't really hear because the noise of the world is so loud."-Jake Ducey   Thoughts from the outside world can keep us down, but so can our own senses and emotions. When we're controlled by different senses and emotions, we become unfocused. Things that we want like good grades in school or a higher salary send vibrations and senses that control our every move. By disconnecting from outside noise and really listening to our emotions, we can tune in to what our unconscious thoughts and energy vibrations are telling us. In the end, you come to realize that the truth relies in your own reality. What creates reality is yourself and not your senses nor vibrations. Change Your Life with Visualization   "If you hold a vision within yourself, two things can happen: You eventually give up or you start talking to yourself about how it's not going to happen or it's not happening."- Jake Ducey   We think in images, not words. If you can control the images within your head, then you can control your mind and essentially your life.  But sometimes, outside thoughts and images can create roadblocks. These images can be anything from what we see on the news, from social media, to a chat with our coworkers. Fortunately, you were born with this powerful mind to create whatever you want to create. Don't listen to what other people tell you what you can and can't do. Visionaries don't accept the outside world and they don't allow it to hold them back from doing what they want to do. You have to think of what you want to think. Don't fill yourself with negativity and everything that's going on in the outside world. Block out the outer world. focus and believe in your inner world more.  First Steps to Create a Life That You Love Create a life that you love by setting goals for yourself and give a new meaning to things in your life such as your education or your career. Another way is to increase your own value and don't change what you do. Stick with your job and work on being more comfortable with yourself and the tasks that go along with your job. You can increase your value and not change what you do by growing your skills and increasing your self-image. Accomplishments like that can help you grow in your career and start you on a path a position that you love, a new company to work for, or a better salary. It's not where you are in your career, but the meaning that you give to your career and the value that you create from it.  To move forward in your life, what do you want to create? People such as Jay-Z, Steve Jobs, the Wright Brothers didn't listen to the outside world. Instead, they were so ambitious and successful because they had these inner visions and images. Their inner world helped them become who they wanted to be and do what they wanted to do with their lives.   About Jake Ducey At only 25 years old Jake Ducey is a three-time published author with Penguin/RandomHouse (The Purpose Principles and Profit From Happiness), a leading speaker for his generation having been featured in TEDx Youth, hired by mega organizations such as Nielsen and Accenture, and a leader who has already inspired countless thousands of young people to seek meaningful career success and to make a difference in the world. He also is a sought after speaker, having given the first TEDx talk on music therapy. In addition to this, he teaches other creative entrepreneurs how to help more people, earn what they're worth, and achieve balance through his coaching division, Empower U Academy. As if that wasn't enough, he is the President of WRAMTA, and a Tribal Elder of TEDxYBC, the largest TEDxYouth organization in the world.
