Brit Eaton is back on the podcast to discuss Deconstruction and the modern deconstruction movement within the Christian Church. We believe that it is important to create a safe atmosphere within our churches and communities where people feel empowered to ask questions... especially the difficult ones. Our conversations centered around healthy ways to unpack and examine your beliefs and WHY you believe what you believe as well as destructive ways to deconstruct. As Brit pointed out, "Deconstruction without reconstruction is just destruction" and if you feel that you have a need to dig deeper into unpacking your beliefs, jump in... but keep your eyes fully fixed on Jesus in the process. All of us have secrets we wish weren't true. Things in our lives that we don't like or with we didn't feel, but we do. When in that position, shame can easily find its way into our hearts, with tempts us to hide and hiding leads to mental distress. While the church is intended to be the safest place to talk about the shameful parts of ourselves, all too often people don't feel free to be honest. In this episode, I talk with my friend Brit, who held many secrets from herself and others for years. Certain aspects of herself that she didn't like - having an affair, living with an eating disorder for over a decade and withholding the fact that she is attracted to both genders. When life caught up to her, she was placed in a position to come clean, and she did. The reward and freedom she experienced far outweighed the darkness of concealing her secrets. Her story is one of courage and honesty and I believe her sharing the truth of her life will invite you into the same. George Wood and Brit Eaton believe that our legalistic, box-checking, one-size-fits-all programs produce astonishingly high failure rates—which means far too many people are left to fight addiction, mental health problems, and suicidal thoughts on their own. So, they wrote a book (that will be released by the time you hear this episode), called, “The Un-covery”: Understanding the Power of Community to Heal Trauma. They believe that their book will help the church—and the world—see recovery through a grace-laced, gospel lens. George A. Wood is an ordained minister, pastoral care counselor, and a former addict turned recovery activist and founder of three different recovery ministries. And his co-author, Brit Eaton is a writer, speaker, discipler, adjunct professor, and strong advocate for nontraditional recovery and women in ministry. So, we weren't joking with the episode title. Meet one of the most important people in the world of vintage denim, Brit Eaton (@originalindianajeans). He's a Levi's collector who's made a name for himself by being just crazy enough to risk his life for some insanely rare jeans, including one of ten pairs of buckleback Levi's, a original Olympic pair of Levi's, and countless other historical finds. He's a treasure trove of good stories, conversation, and cele-brit-y shoutouts (see what I did there? I went to Yale), and we hope you enjoy this conversation with Brit, even if the conversation is mostly him talking, Michael laughing at swear words, and Sol either grunting in agreement or hanging his mouth open in shock.
