What financial lessons can we learn from a tax collector who climbed a tree? Stay tuned and find out.Of course, you know I'm talking about Zacchaeus in Luke 19. That story is filled with important teachings about money, stewardship, and generosity. Dr. Kelly Rush joins us today with some interesting observations about the life of Zacchaeus.Dr. Kelly Rush is a Professor of Finance, Department Chair, and Financial Planning Program Coordinator at Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Ohio. The Cultural and Financial Context of ZacchaeusIn first-century Israel, political, social, and religious divides were as prevalent as they are today. Labels like Pharisee, Sadducee, and zealot carried heavy connotations, just as terms like Democrat or Republican do in our culture. Among the most despised figures in Jewish society were the tax collectors, or publicans, who collected tribute for the oppressive Roman Empire.A publican acted as a financial middleman, collecting various taxes such as road tolls, harbor dues, and purchase levies. Chief publicans, like Zacchaeus, oversaw entire regions and often amassed great wealth by overcharging and exploiting their fellow Jews. Essentially, publicans were seen as greedy traitors who profited from an unjust economic system—what we would call white-collar criminals today.Zacchaeus' position as chief publican meant he was not just a participant but a leader in this corrupt system. However, his story took a radical turn when he encountered Jesus.A Life-Changing Encounter with JesusIn Luke 19, Jesus is passing through Jericho, heading to Jerusalem for Passover. Despite being days away from His crucifixion, Jesus takes the time to walk through the town, looking for Zacchaeus.Zacchaeus, unable to see over the crowd because of his short stature, humbles himself by climbing a sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus. In a moment of divine grace, Jesus stops, looks up, and calls Zacchaeus by name, inviting Himself to his house. This moment showcases a beautiful truth: while Zacchaeus was seeking Jesus, Jesus was already seeking him.The turning point in Zacchaeus' story comes when he joyfully receives Jesus and declares his willingness to make restitution:He pledges to give half of his possessions to the poor. He commits to repaying anyone he has cheated four times the amount—going far beyond the Old Testament requirement of returning stolen goods plus 20% (Leviticus 6).This response highlights a powerful principle: true financial transformation begins with a changed heart. Zacchaeus' generosity wasn't an attempt to earn salvation, but a response to the salvation he had already received.Lessons from Zacchaeus' Financial TestimonyJesus Seeks the Lost, No Matter Their Financial PastZacchaeus' reputation was well known, yet Jesus didn't shy away from him. Instead of condemnation, Jesus offered restoration. No financial mistake is too great for God to redeem. Repentance Leads to ActionZacchaeus' turnaround was immediate and public. He didn't just feel remorse; he acted decisively to make things right. This challenges us to evaluate our own finances and take bold steps toward integrity and generosity. Money Reflects the HeartHow we handle our finances reflects what's happening inside of us. Zacchaeus' newfound generosity was evidence of his transformed heart. Salvation Precedes StewardshipJesus declared, "Today salvation has come to this house" (Luke 19:9), showing that salvation is a free gift, not a reward for financial generosity. Stewardship is simply our response to God's grace. Many people struggle with shame over their financial decisions, preferring to keep them hidden from God and others. Zacchaeus, however, openly acknowledged his financial failures and took steps to correct them. His story reminds us that God's grace covers our past, and He calls us into a new future of faithful stewardship.Zacchaeus' story ends with a bold proclamation: "Look, Lord, here and now I give!" His financial testimony stands as a powerful example of what happens when we allow Jesus to transform not just our hearts, but our wallets as well.Let Zacchaeus' example inspire you to take an honest look at your finances, surrender them to God, and trust Him to guide you in stewardship that honors Him.Faithful Steward: FaithFi's New Quarterly PublicationYou can read Dr. Kelly Rush's full article on Zacchaeus in our new quarterly publication, Faithful Steward. It's human nature to be concerned about having enough, but would you know it when you get there? It's a question we don't ask ourselves enough…how much is enough? We have a great story in the Bible that gives us a clue, and Dr. Kelly Rush joins us today to talk about it.Dr. Kelly Rush is a Professor of Finance, Department Chair, and Financial Planning Program Coordinator at Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Ohio. Understanding Lifestyle CreepIf you're unfamiliar with the concept of "lifestyle creep," it's where individuals tend to spend more on lifestyle comforts and luxuries as they earn more money. For example, a college student on a Taco Bell budget may progress to eating at Panera and eventually to dining at more expensive restaurants like the Cheesecake Factory as their income increases.Lifestyle creep isn't limited to dining choices. It affects various aspects of life, including vacations, clothing, entertainment, and cars. For instance, a high school student might start with an old Ford Taurus, but they may drive a luxury car like a Mercedes or BMW by their peak earning years. This progression happens gradually and can lead to significant lifestyle changes over time.Is Lifestyle Creep Wrong?Increases in lifestyle spending can be healthy and motivating but can also be a slippery slope if left unchecked. It's essential to monitor our budgets and hearts to avoid falling into the trap of excessive spending.Lifestyle creep is fundamental to the human condition and not just a result of cultural norms. There are parallels to the biblical story of Lot, who progressively moved closer to the affluent and corrupt city of Sodom, illustrating that the desire for more is a timeless human trait.Lessons from Lot's StoryLot's story in Genesis 13 shows how he chose the greener pastures of Sodom for greater financial gain, eventually becoming influential in the corrupt city. This progression highlights the dangers of prioritizing wealth and lifestyle over spiritual and moral values. While Sodom is often associated with sexual sins, Ezekiel 16:49-50 reveals that their iniquity also included arrogance, gluttony, idleness, and neglect of the poor and needy. Wealth gave them a false sense of superiority and security, leading to their downfall.Avoiding Lot's MistakesTo avoid the pitfalls of lifestyle creep, it's crucial to set financial finish lines—real dollar limits on spending that help define "how much is enough." These limits can be for lifestyle expenses and assets, ensuring that any financial blessings beyond these limits are used to bless others.Setting financial finish lines increases giving and sharing of the Lord's abundance. As Paul advised in 2 Corinthians, giving should be decided in one's heart and done cheerfully. Establishing these limits helps align our financial decisions with our values, creating greater joy and purpose. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:Should I keep my $25,000 in a conservative investment group that is no longer actively managing it, or should I roll it over to the company I have been with for 30 years? They have been handling my other $50,000 investment and are doing well as my advisors.I was wondering what to do with my $60,000 disability settlement. Is there any way I could stop paying the extra Medicare insurance that was automatically taken out since I already have insurance through my pension?I recently received a call from USAA about investing $300,000 from my TSP into a retirement annuity. Since I plan to retire within the next year, I wanted to know if putting the money into an annuity would be a good idea so that I could get a return on it.Resources Mentioned:Timothy PlanRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. Has your child ever asked you about the realities of homelessness? Maybe you saw someone who needed help on the street with a sign, or you served a homeless population at church. How did you answer them? How can parents convey the way that Jesus feels about those struggling with homelessness to their kids? Listen to this episode with Jaime Buxton to hear a conversation addressing all of these curiosities and responsibilities. For Jaime Buxton, responding to God’s call on her life to serve others has always been her passion and motivation. In 2005, Jaime transitioned from the mission field in Belize, Central America to serve as a Childcare Assistant at The City Mission of Cleveland, Ohio. In this role, she worked diligently with mothers and children in crisis while raising her own family in the ministry she cared so deeply about. Jaime’s desire to compassionately care for children and encourage mothers grew into an opportunity to educate others in how to get involved. In 2016, Jaime became the Internship and Volunteer Services Supervisor at The City Mission, managing thousands of volunteers and dozens of interns over the years. Today, Jaime serves as The City Mission’s Community Engagement Manager and has the incredible honor of educating the community, advocating for men, women, and children experiencing homelessness, and bringing people from different churches and organizations together to serve the Mission’s residents in a meaningful way. Jaime holds a B.A. in Youth Ministry and Missions from Mount Vernon Nazarene University and is a 2021 graduate of the Cleveland Leadership Bridge Builders Program.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to episode ninety of New Creation Conversations. My conversation today is with a great friend and colleague in pastoral ministry, Dr. Sam Barber. Sam is currently serving as the District Superintendent of the South-Central Ohio District for the Church of the Nazarene. Sam is a graduate of Mount Vernon Nazarene University, he has a master's degree in Christian Ministry and Church Leadership from Malone University, another master's in theology from Duke Divinity School, and he earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Nazarene Theological Seminary. He has also been the lead pastor at churches in Troy and Columbus, Ohio as well as at the Kansas City Central Church. He and his wife Jill have become dear friends of Debbie and me over the last several years, and I deeply respect Sam's heart, mind, and leadership ability. Our conversation centers around his recently released book, A People of Grace: Becoming Disciples Together (published by The Foundry Press). In the book, Sam explores the exciting adventure of discipleship – following Jesus. However, he argues that discipleship is never something we do alone, it takes a team effort to help each other grow in holiness and reach out to others. In the book, Sam invites readers to participate together in an innovative approach to discipleship that has its roots in the ministry of John Wesley. It's a very helpful book and a rich conversation. So, thanks for sitting in on this conversation between two old friends.

Welcome to episode seventy-three of New Creation Conversations. It's a joy for me today to get to have a conversation with one of my favorite young scholars and ministers, Dr. Henry Spaulding III – better known to his family and friends as “Hank.” Hank is the Associate Campus Pastor and Assistant Professor of Theology at Mount Vernon Nazarene University. He's an alum of Trevecca Nazarene University, has Master's Degree in Theological Studies from Duke Divinity School, and has a PhD in Christian Ethics from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. Hank and I talk about the unique challenges of campus ministry, but we also talk about his two writing projects – one out and one in process. The project that is out is The Just and Loving Gaze of God with Us: Paul's Apocalyptic Political Theology (published by Wipf and Stock). This book is an edited version of Hank's dissertation work and is an interesting look at the recent interest in the Apostle Paul by non-Christian political scholars and reflects on what they get right but also what they often misunderstand about Paul's political theology. The project that is forthcoming is Iconoclastic Sex – it is a quantitative and theological study of the problem of sex trafficking and Christian sexual ethics. Both are interesting works, and both are deeply connected to the vision of a new creation. It is always encouraging to me to get to connect with young scholars. I'm deeply thankful for those like Hank who have a passion for deep theological reflection and for church ministry. I'm thankful that people like him are picking up the baton and carrying it forward.

One of the more complex issues in our culture is that of guns, violence, the second amendment, and how all of that is relevant to a Christian living in America. Stories of guns being used to shoot people cross our news feeds far too often. Should a Christian own a gun? Should a pastor own a gun? And what about Jesus being non-violent, how does that relate to owning a weapon? Our guest today tackles these difficult questions and more.Dan Skinner is a pastor, entrepreneur, and a strongman competitor. He has been ministering since 2006, and officially became a pastor in 2010 after graduating from Mount Vernon Nazarene University. Dan's passion for guns became a career in 2012 when he became the sales manager for a defense company. And he now owns his own gun store, Eagle Creek Tactical, in Newton Falls, OH. Dan has lots of love and support from his wife, children, and their Labrador retrievers. Questions Answered:What is the definition of the Second Amendment? What limits did the founders place on weapons, for example could a citizen own a cannon?Could a citizen own a battleship? How did you decide to open a gun store? What is the best way to introduce firearms to children and families?Explain your thoughts of people moving their identity from Christians to Nationalism? How do you use a gun shop as part of your ministry? What do you think of the phrase “gun culture in America”?Should a Christian own a gun if Jesus talked about being non-violent?What is your interpretation of turning the other cheek? What challenges have you heard as a Christian who owns a gun shop? How is gun ownership tied into the suicide rate? Can you share your thoughts on mental health related to gun violence? Is a Christian man allowed to fire a weapon at an attacker? What are your thoughts on how sin is impacting pop culture?Should a pastor carry a weapon in church? How can people use their hobbies for the glory of God? This episode is deeply personal as our guest, Andrew Hendrixson, has been a friend for some time. Andrew is a visual artist and poet, as well as a beautiful human being seeking ways to talk about God when we don't have words. We talk about the vocation of the artist, what a poem or painting “is trying to say,” and how all art is following some sort of agitation. In Andrew's words, “I don't know how else I would understand God other than poetically or via metaphors.”Andrew has studied art and philosophy in multiple universities, the most recent being Yale University. He taught art at our alma mater, Mount Vernon Nazarene University. Voices In My Head Podcast Episode #198: The Invitation - The Wesleyan View of the Eucharist with guests Lisa Michaels and Matthew Price. With the release of my new music video, The Invitation, on Ash Wednesday, March 1st, I wanted to have a conversation on the Eucharist as viewed through a Wesleyan lens. Lisa, Matt and I have a great conversation about the welcoming call to fellowship in the body of Christ at the Lord's table.Matt Price teaches intercultural studies at Mount Vernon Nazarene University and is the pastor of The Shepherd's House, a Church of the Nazarene that meets in a local pub. L Michaels is a follower of Jesus, theology student, author, blogger, editor, educator, wife, mom, and aspiring peacemaker. She has a B.S.M. (business management) from Indiana Wesleyan University and an M.A. and M.Div. (both in theology/spiritual formation) from Northwest Nazarene University. L writes about theology, the sacraments, and ministry to the least of these at Flip Flops, Glitter, and Theology (.com). In her spare time, L sings and dances with babies (AKA teaches early childhood music), plans outlandish vacations, drinks voluminous amounts of Peppermint Bark Mocha (preferably at local coffee shops), and masquerades as Catholic, so she can participate in the Eucharist more often.
