In this special episode, we sit down with Johnny Crowder, a mental health advocate, TEDx speaker, musician, and the founder of Cope Notes—a revolutionary text-based mental health support system that's changing lives nationwide. This episode was recorded in Sept of 2024, then we had 2 hurricanes, Johny lost his house and the timing wasn't right to release, until now! Johnny's story is one of resilience, transformation, and purpose. Growing up, he battled schizophrenia, OCD, PTSD, and bipolar disorder, struggling to find a path to healing. Despite these challenges, he channeled his pain into music, becoming the frontman of the metal band Prison, known for its raw, honest lyrics about mental health.
Christina Dent, founder of End It For Good, Author - Curious, shares her journey of understanding addiction and advocating for a new approach to drug policy. She recounts her experience as a foster parent and meeting a mother struggling with addiction, which challenged her preconceived notions. This led her to question the effectiveness of the criminal justice system in addressing drug use and to explore alternative solutions. She discusses the Rat Park experiment and the importance of addressing the underlying reasons for substance use. Christina emphasizes the need for personalized pathways to recovery and a shift away from a one-size-fits-all approach. The illegal drug economy, fueled by drug prohibition, incentivizes crime and violence by providing a financial incentive. Gangs, cartels, and terrorist organizations are primarily funded through the proceeds of the drug trade. Prohibition also leads to the production of unregulated and dangerous drugs, such as fentanyl, which has contributed to the overdose crisis. The current approach to drug policy is reactive and fear-based, and it is important to shift towards a health-centered approach that addresses the root causes of addiction. Regular people can lead the charge for change and create a movement towards policy reform. Building authentic community and valuing every member's contribution is vital in the church. A reputation for being a house of prayer and worship can be a powerful testimony to the community. In this powerful video, Timothy McMahan King shares his story of addiction and recovery, and how faith and freedom can help us overcome any obstacle. Timothy McMahan King is an addiction specialist, faith leader, and freedom fighter. In this video, he shares his story of addiction and recovery, and how faith and freedom can help us overcome any obstacle. Whether you're struggling with addiction or just want to be free from its clutches, this video is a powerful resource for you. Timothy McMahan King shares his story of addiction and recovery, and how faith and freedom can help us overcome any obstacle. When a near-fatal illness led his doctors to prescribe narcotics, media consultant Timothy McMahan King ended up where millions of others have: addicted. Eventually King learned to manage pain without opioids—but not before he began asking profound questions about the spiritual and moral nature of addiction, the companies complicit in creating the opioid epidemic, and the paths toward healing and recovery. We have become a society not only damaged by addiction but fueled by it. In Addiction Nation, King investigates the ways that addiction robs us of freedom and holds us back from being fully human. Through stories, theology, philosophy, and cultural analysis, King examines today's most common addictions and their destructive consequences. In stark yet intimate prose, he looks not only at the rise of opioid abuse but at policy, pain, virtue, and habit. He also unpacks research showing patterns of addiction to technology, stress, and even political partisanship. Addiction of any kind dims the image of God and corrupts who we were created to be. Addiction Nation nudges us toward healing from the ravages of addiction and draws us toward a spirituality sturdy enough to sate our deepest longings. Together we share our common experiences, along with how we are both trying to change the world and the way recovery in Christianity as well as nonfaith based environment has some room to grow. In 1996 during a particularly dark time in my life I stumbled across some crazy sounds blasting through 4ft tall floor speakers (Remember those behemoths lol)... It was the band "Korn" and my musical taste was about to change forever! Funny how sound can change everything that your feeling inside (for better or worse) it is powerful unbelievably at times! Unknown by me at the time but as I was diving deep into addiction and depression so was the famous rock star coming through those outdated pioneer speakers. Brian "Head" Welch a founder and lead guitarist of the band Korn has lived a life of incredible highs, and lows and everything in between, then Jesus saved his life and forever changed the way he would live. He has gone on to become an incredible speaker for the gospel bringing hope to the lost and light in the darkest of places (including stadiums and theaters everywhere). We sit and have a conversation about drugs, depression, our faith journeys and what it means to follow Jesus in a way that speaks to people that need his voice! Brian is an amazing dude, who lives his life for the gospel every day and is an inspiration to thousands upon thousands of people, this is a great conversation that shows a side of him that he doesn't usually show in interviews, you don't want to miss it!
