River City Church - Discover - Connect - Grow Welcome to River City Church Online. Thank you for joining us today as we continuing our series called Crafting a Culture of Healing & Hope in the Church. Today's message has been presented by Pastor Darrell Bierman. A healthy church is one where every person is seen, heard, and valued. A healthy church has carefully crafted a culture of goodness, dignity, and respect. However, both history and our current headlines reveal a church that can be a deeply flawed, sinful, and unhealthy institution, marred by acts of injustice, corruption, abuse, misogyny, and oppression. Indeed, far from having “goodness cultures” too many churches today have “toxic” cultures! So, is this vision of a healthy church even possible or is this vision idealistic and unattainable this side of heaven? Here at River City Church, we believe that a healthy church is possible, but creating one will takes all of us working together deliberately following a map. This new series will give us the map and will both equip and challenge us to turn this this dream into a reality. Some RCC listeners have been part of a toxic church. If you have, it may have affected (or may be affecting) your view of God. What's more: By being able to identify toxic churches we can/will becomes part of the ‘solution' (to keep RCC from becoming a toxic church). Romans 13:10 Love does no harm to a neighbor. Criticism is not necessarily toxic, even when it is misguided. And no one likes to field complaints. Sometimes they are warranted, and sometimes they can be toxic. How can a pastor tell the difference? Thom covers the best ways pastors can discern toxic conflict from healthy conflict. It's not always easy, but he offers a few practical tips through six questions. The post Six Questions to Discern Toxic Church Conflict from Healthy Church Conflict appeared first on Church Answers.

TAKE TWO: A blogger argues that the focus on bad pastors and their abusive leadership in the Christian community might have been overdone and could overshadow the more common existence of good pastors. I disagree. Churches and Christians are called to judge inside their ranks and expose pastoral abuse when it occurs. The Bible calls for greater accountability for church leaders and warns against tolerating abusive practices in leadership. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kelly-dehnert/support

For this episode of In This Moment Janetta Oni talks about God has redeemed her soul from a toxic church environment. Janetta also discusses the ways we ourselves can be toxic, how to know when to leave a church, and she talks about the ways God is still healing her.

Purchase a copy of She Deserves Better: https://amzn.to/40NMYZzArmed with data from an all-new survey of over 7,000 women, the authors of The Great Sex Rescue reveal how experiences in church as teens affect women's self-esteem and relationships today. They expose common evangelical teachings that can backfire--the purity emphasis that can cause shame rather than good choices, the dating rules that can prime your daughter for abuse, and the one overarching belief that can keep her from setting healthy boundaries.Instead, the authors advocate biblically grounded, freeing messages that are more about the dos and less about the don'ts. By reframing (and sometimes replacing) common evangelical messages to teen girls, this book will equip you to raise a daughter who can navigate the tumultuous teenage years while still clinging tightly to Jesus. You can raise your daughter with the discernment to resist toxic teachings. At the end of the day, we all just need people who will embrace our vulnerability and support us when we feel like we are about to lose our minds. No one is perfect, and life gets easier if you can share your imperfections with others. Our guest was none other than mom, entrepreneur, hope coach, and traveling speaker Toni Collier. Toni is the owner of Broken Crayons, which focuses on taking people to a place where they can embrace their trauma and find hope and healing. Toni has experienced so much redemption, health, and counseling that she now lives her life helping others break through the trauma and the pain and find a restored life. In this episode, Toni was full of inspiration for moms and women who are doing it all and provided tips for communication with those around so all your relationships can thrive! Listen close and leave a comment on Instagram about one takeaway that really stuck with you. I know I have a few to share! In this episode, we discuss: Broken Crayons and the impact it has on women who are struggling with past traumas. Setting boundaries with your spouse and kids – especially on the road! How women can do the things that really matter. Finding your people so you can be free to be broken rather than trying to be perfect. Pastor Andrew speaks on what Paul says about love being the cure for a toxic church.
All of us have secrets we wish weren't true. Things in our lives that we don't like or with we didn't feel, but we do. When in that position, shame can easily find its way into our hearts, with tempts us to hide and hiding leads to mental distress. While the church is intended to be the safest place to talk about the shameful parts of ourselves, all too often people don't feel free to be honest. In this episode, I talk with my friend Brit, who held many secrets from herself and others for years. Certain aspects of herself that she didn't like - having an affair, living with an eating disorder for over a decade and withholding the fact that she is attracted to both genders. When life caught up to her, she was placed in a position to come clean, and she did. The reward and freedom she experienced far outweighed the darkness of concealing her secrets. Her story is one of courage and honesty and I believe her sharing the truth of her life will invite you into the same. The church needs a detox. So much of our behavior and mindsets needs a deep cleanse. How did we get here? What is our path forward? It all starts with giving Jesus preeminence in our lives and recognizing the toxic behavior and mindsets we need to change in ourselves.
Identifying Toxic Church Cultures: Interview With Scot McKnightTragically, in recent years, Christians have gotten used to revelations of abuses of many kinds in our most respected churches―from Willow Creek to Harvest, from Southern Baptist pastors to Sovereign Grace churches. One of the best books I have read this year is "A Church Called Tov" by Scot Mcknight, which addresses this very issue. The sad truth is that churches of all shapes and sizes are susceptible to abuses of power, sexual abuse, and spiritual abuse. Abuses occur most frequently when Christians neglect to create a culture that resists abuse and promotes healing, safety, and spiritual growth. How do we keep these devastating events from repeating themselves? We need a map to get us from where we are today to where we ought to be as the body of Christ. Today Scott will be giving us steps to identify toxic cultures, but also how to build healthy church culture where the body of Christ can flourish. In today's episode of Staying at the Table we talk and explore the topic of Church and Empire. We think through what are the positives and negatives of oppression or being oppressed, and the church experiences we go through in today's life.
In today's episode of Staying at the Table we discuss an article called “Jerry Falwell Jr. is not a Hypocrite” and then move the conversation to how do we respond to situations where leaders are moving our organization - a church or Christian institution - away from their values?

We're continuing our series on why I think the future of the church in America is co-vocational. Why I think the church of the 21st century will look less like the 20th century and more like the 1st century. And why now is THE time for pastors like you and me to figure out how to leverage our ministry skills into a secondary income source, so we can serve God and provide for our families no matter what. In today's show we're going to talk about Toxic Church Culture, Beth Moore, #CHURCHTOO and the Co-vocational Future of the Church. Get the show notes/transcript at www.morethanapastor.com/14.

Soul Fire 209 - Gospel Hope, Integrity, Discipline, Faithfulness
Toxic Church Teaching on Female Sexual Desire from purity culture. In The Great Sex Rescue (https://amzn.to/3J6Dlg4) Sheila Gregoire documents teaching on Female Sexual Desire that makes intimacy more difficult in marriage. Popular books like "The Power of a Praying Wife" and "His Needs, Her Needs" propagate these teachings. Much of the teaching on sex focusses on male sexual release and ignores women's sexual desires. Men are portrayed as having a need for sex and women only have a need for relationship or emotional intimacy. This leads to the orgasm gap which is men having far more orgasms than their wives. The Scripture speaks in mutual terms for loving and serving your spouse. "The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband.” (1 Corinthians 7:3, ESV) Let us know what you think in the comment section. Aaron Niequist has been to the top of the evangelical mountain and has experienced first hand the goodness and the toxicity and the pain that is often a byproduct of that world. He's come out of the belly of the evangelical beast without the bitterness and cynicism that many of us fall victim to. He doesn't want to label himself an Ex-vangelical. He's dreaming of living in and creating spiritual places and practices that are a convergence of the best of a number of Christian traditions, and it's beautiful. Too many of us have experienced abuse of power from pastors in our churches. This happens in churches that have allowed for a culture of toxicity. To resist toxicity, we need to restore goodness in our churches. The Hebrew word translated “good” is tov. Scot McKnight and his daughter Laura Barringer have written A Church Called Tov: Forming a Goodness Culture That Resists Abuses of Power and Promotes Healing (Tyndale, 2020). In this episode, we interview Scot McKnight. Dr. McKnight is Professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary in Lisle, IL. He is a New Testament scholar, historian of early Christianity, and theologian. He has a very popular blog called "Jesus Creed" that is housed at ChristianityToday.com. Thanks for listening! SHARE THIS EPISODE WITH YOUR PASTOR. YES, I'M YELLING. Prolific theologian and author Scot Mcknight, along with his daughter Laura Barringer, recently released a book called “TOV" (TOV means “good” in Hebrew). This book was written partly as a response to the downfall of Bill Hybels, pioneering mega-Church Pastor of Willow Creek Church; but it is also a general exhortation for all churches to promote and follow “TOV leaders,” those with fullness of total moral behavior. Co-host Chip Judd, Scot Mcknight and Joey discuss Bill Hybels' fall, toxic leadership culture in churches, and why pastors better take their damn masks off. Like, right now. Take them off. Is there a solution to all this mess? Scot says, "YES, we need more TOV leaders."SHARE THIS EPISODE WITH YOUR PASTOR. In this episode, we chat with Scot McKnight and Laura Barringer about their new book that's making waves called A Church Called Tov. This book is extremely important and is a prophetic call to the Church to form a goodness culture that resists abuses of power and promotes healing. We chat about recent scandals of abuse and coverup in the modern church, why we've created toxic church cultures and how we can move toward more beautiful cultures of goodness (Tov) in our churches. Also, we get some dirt on Scot from Laura about some fun and mildly embarrassing stories from growing up with a biblical scholar.
