Do you ever feel like you don't measure up to the other women around you? Perhaps you've decided to wait on pursuing a particular goal or dream until you reach a particular weight loss goal? Or maybe you've been struggling with shame about something that happened in the past, and you feel like that has disqualified you from leadership or ministry. If you resonate with any of this, or work with women in any capacity, this episode is for you. Today we're chatting with our guest Rachael Gilbert. Rachael was a guest on episode 14 way back in the beginning of the podcast, and she's back with us again today. I know you're going to benefit from this conversation, and we cover a lot of ground, including how your core beliefs are connected to your confidence, what body image and the Fruit of the Spirit have to do with each other, and “big T” vs. “little t” trauma. We also discuss whether trauma can or should disqualify us from leadership, and why it's so important to address the hurt in our hearts when it happens. Body image is a topic that has major implications in our lives, yet we tend to avoid talking about it because it's so personal and oftentimes sensitive.  I'm so thankful my friend Rachael Gilbert is bravely speaking into these body image issues through her new book, Image Restored. She addresses our most common body image pitfalls and, as a licensed counselor and mom, comes at it both professionally and practically.    Here's a few of the topics we cover: Signs we're dealing with body image concerns that need addressing Core beliefs impacting our body image Ways to reframe our body image biblically Current health trends that are red flags for healthy body image Parenting healthy body image with our kids  I hope you'll take a few minutes to listen to this important conversation today. I also pray each of us will ask the Lord to reveal the places in our lives where we need to reframe our attitudes towards our bodies, not only for our own benefit but also for our families.      Resources from today's show:  Image Restored by Rachael Gilbert imagerestoredbook.com Every Parent Wants to Know: A Christian Parenting Digital Event When I Talk to God, I Talk about You   Pardon the Mess is a part of the Christian Parenting Podcast Network. Let me ask, are you tired of being at war with your body—and your thoughts about your body? With the constant presence of social media and more, so many of us fall into the scary trap of comparison. Comparing ourselves to others. Comparing ourselves to culture and society's definitions of perceived perfection. Maybe even comparing our current self to our younger self. Whatever it is, we get lost trying to replicate this world's defintion of beauty rather than trying to radiate the beauty God has already instilled within us. Thankfully, today's guest, Rachael Gilbert, comes with a message of hope and encouragement to help us restore and renovate our body images from the inside out. As a fitness instructor, Rachael struggled with shame when she didn't measure up to her dream body image, but then, as a licensed counselor, she realized how many of us bury those same painful insecurities as well. Therefore, Rachael wrote her new book releasing March 7th titled Image Restored: Tear Down Shame and Insecurity to Experience a Body Image Renovation. In and throughout the pages of this book as well as the discussion in this week's episode you'll learn about a biblical perspective on eating, fitness, and godly self-confidence; tools for overcoming comparison; counselor-inspired strategies to help you appreciate how God made you; and ways to use thoughts and feelings so they help you rather than sabotage you. My prayer is that after this episode, you would be encouraged and uplifted to view yourself through the eyes of our Creator who calls you unique, wonderful, and beautiful. Link to Image Restored Book: https://rachaelgilbert.com/image-restored/

This week on Real Talk with Rachael I'm talking with the author of A Little Goes a Long Way and host of The Love Offering podcast, Rachael Adams. Rachael hopes to help women realize their God-given purpose and significance. She and her husband, Bryan, run a family business and farm in Kentucky with their two children, Will and Kate, and two doodle dogs. Her work has been featured on Crosswalk, iBelieve, Today Parenting, and YouVersion.  Key Points from Our Conversation: Women in particular struggle with wondering if the mundane things they're doing actually matter. The truth is that we are inherently significant because God created us, not because of our works. Jesus did mundane things that significantly impacted the people around Him. We get to partner with Him to call out the gifts in the people around us and make mundane things extraordinary.  We tend to value the "highlight reels" of our lives and ignore the ordinary moments, but we often don't see the impact we have daily. Be faithful to do the little things every day and trust God to use them.  Little actions build on one another - that includes poor choices. If we justify the "little sins" in our lives, they will compound.  God purposefully chooses to do things little by little. We all start at zero, the important thing is to keep building. Ask the Lord what He wants you to begin. The more time we spend with God in prayer, reading His Word, and worshiping, the more we will begin to find power in the mundane. Let's Get Real Practical: Write out Zechariah 4:10 and put it somewhere you can read it daily: "Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin." Together we are tackling the lie: it's selfish to take care of yourself.  As busy moms we are prone to serve everyone around us and place our own care at the back of the line. We kinda can't help it, it's how God wired us as caregivers and overseers of our homes and families. But we also know when warning signs creep in through short tempers, lowered immune systems and burnout - that, my friend, is when it's time to re-evaluate. The Lord designed us for this hard work called motherhood but sometimes we just need the reminder that He desires a healthy balance of service and rest.  Today, Rachael and I want to call out the lies the enemy whispers to keep you frantic and exhausted and point you back to the Truth of God's heart and His Word and give you practical steps to care for your temple, your heart and your mental health. Listen in to this episode with counselor and author Rachael Gilbert as we tackle how not feeling enough leads us to shame ourselves, decide we must perfect witnesses for Jesus, and believe the false narrative that a life with Christ ALWAYS means choosing the sacrificial, hard, morally-obligated task even when we feel like we're dying on the inside. This episode is the first in our Skill Set series, one in which we'll take God's wisdom and overlay it onto our real-life struggles so we can know what practical tools are at our disposal to help us overcome our struggles with God's truth and grace. Key Quotes “If you don't like the fruit of a tree, you have to take a look at the root of the tree.” - Counselor + writer Rachael Gilbert “Stop. Take a deep breath, and go back to Jesus.” - Counselor + writer Rachael Gilbert “When I turn back to Jesus, all the shame, guilt, and everything I'm carrying melts away.” - Counselor + writer Rachael Gilbert “The Lord will never ask us to do stuff that causes our own household to crumble.” - Counselor + writer Rachael Gilbert “Your own household is your first ministry.” - Counselor + writer Rachael Gilbert “When we do from a place of be, it feels very joyful.” - Counselor + writer Rachael Gilbert “Just go be a kid. Just go sit at the Father's feet.” - Counselor + writer Rachael Gilbert Mentioned in the Podcast The FCC requires that I tell you that I'm an Amazon Affiliate, which means I earn a bit of commission on each sale. In today's episode I am joined by my friend, author and speaker and host of Real Talk with Rachael, Rachael Gilbert, to take on a key lie the enemy uses to attack the hearts of Moms and really, all women. The lie: I'm just too busy to take care of myself Motherhood is hard on your body, your mind and your spirit because, honestly, it is just a demanding role that God gives us. As busy moms we are prone to serve everyone around us and place our own care at the back of the line. We kinda can't help it, it's how God wired us as caregivers and overseers of our homes and families. But we also know when warning signs creep in through short tempers, lowered immune systems and burnout - that my friend is when it's time to re-evaluate. Connect with Rachael at rachaelgilbert.com and on Instagram! Connect with Somer at somercolbert.com, on Instagram or check out the Ahavah Community private Facebook Group! To download this week's Lies Good Moms Believe Prayer Guide, click HERE! FAVORITE TAKEAWAYS: You're not alone in this struggle - the enemy loves to isolate us and make us think we are the only one struggling When I'm wrestling with a lie of any sort, I always want to get to the root of where did the lie come from and does it have any validity. You might have a root lie that I'm not enough or worthy -  it really comes down to a value issue, what do we see as valuable and what does God see as valuable Mom's have such a servant heart. It is noble at the end of the day that the first ball we are willing to drop is our own Warning signals: Numbing out - shutting out all of your feelings Health falling apart Snapping at your kids Change in libido When you no longer love the things you used to Burnout Check in: How's your heart? Am I numbing out? Is my heart sad? Follow the peace, not the pressure The world puts pressure on us, but let's be honest, we put pressure on ourselves too. When you are letting pressure guide your decisions, you will experience anxiety Following the peace doesn't always look like an easy decision, sometimes it's the harder decision. You can have peace when making a hard choice. Self care has gotten a bad wrap because we think it's supposed to look the same for everyone. Your thoughts affect your feelings and your feelings affect your behavior So if the enemy can mess with my thoughts, he gets to mess with my feelings and my behaviors or my actions. Our body is a temple to be taken care of, not an idol to be worshipped When we actually steward our temple well, not only do we get the benefits of the fruit that's produced, but our family does as well because we feel better. You are a daughter of the Most High God and He cares about all of the things you are going through. Not only does He care but He is here to set you free!

#113: God is Fun & Faithful with Rachael Lampa

This week on Real Talk with Rachael I'm talking with recording artist Rachael Lampa. Rachael has been enjoying music industry success since her teen years, yet ask her what her richest accomplishments are, and you’ll hear a lot more about the relationships that have formed her on the road, the fans that have become dear friends, the beauty that has bridged impossible gaps in ministry to the marginalized and the miracle of her own growing family and sense of home. Even while her own story continues to unfold, Rachael’s driving passion is to elevate the stories of those around her, using the vehicle of soul-filled music to help her access hearts in a way nothing else could. Faithful is an organic continuation of Rachael’s journey, connecting the souls of modern women with the heroines of the Bible who birthed their spiritual heritage and proved time and again a God completely devoted. Key Points from Our Conversation: Rachael got a record deal after singing at a Christian festival when she was 14. For the next 8 years, she toured regularly and released new music. Living a life filled with travel and music at an early age allowed her to build deep trust in God and develop a unique relationship with Him. "God speaks through fun." We are innately drawn to fun things that bring us joy - it's part of God's design. After spending time working with women in prisons and jail and being inspired by God's faithfulness to them, Rachael decided when she got back into music, she would write for them, to them, and about them. The Faithful project is a fulfillment of that commitment. The project features authors and artists coming together to tell the story of God’s faithfulness in and through the women of the Bible. Throughout the writing process, Rachael found multiple comparisons between the women God partnered with in the Bible and the women she met in prison. He was faithful then and He remains faithful now. If you're in need of encouragement, remember there is power in the name of Jesus. You don't need to have all the words, just say His name and invite Him to wash over your situation. There is power in partnering with other women and being able to see and hear each other without a time restraint or agenda. When we make space for God to move, He births new ideas. Resources mentioned: Faithful Livestream - May 1, 2021 at 7:00pm CST Faithful (book) Faithful (album) That Sounds Fun Podcast Let’s Get Real Practical: In this episode we talk not only about God's faithfulness, but how much fun He is. This week I encourage you to think about what is fun to you and make time to do one of those things this week. Also, ask God to show you how to make any situation fun. Because God has gifted you with competence, and He’s gifted you with gifts to use and acknowledge. And you don’t do the world any favors when you deny your gifting for the sake of not wanting to be boastful.” - Jill E. Welcome back to the show, everyone! This week, I am discussing a Real talk: I've struggled with body image much of my life. I've used food and exercise as a reward and punishment. I've obsessed over what I ate or didn't eat, how much I exercised or didn't exercise, how my clothes fit or didn't fit, and what the number on the scales.I've beat myself up when the jeans didn't fit, felt frustrated and discouraged when the scale didn't say the number I wanted it to, and spent way too much mental energy thinking about what I see when I look in the mirror.I've always gained 30+ pounds with each pregnancy and losing it has always been a challenge. But I felt like getting back to “pre-pregnancy size” was super important — so I've expended so much thought and effort and unhealthy pursuits to hit that.I don't share this so that people will leave comments saying, “But you look great!” I share this because I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in this.As women, we can invest so much time, thought, and money in the pursuit of what we think is the ideal body image… all the while missing that we are made in the image of God, thinness doesn't define our value and worth, and that the Enemy loves to hijack our focus from Jesus to an obsession over our size. And that's why I'm so grateful for this week's podcast episode with @rachaeljgilbert where we talk openly about what it looks like to have a healthy body image and practical ways to get there.Yes, pursuing health and fitness so that we can have energy to do what God has called us to do and honor the body God has given us is a good thing. But the number on the scale or size on the tag of our jeans is not what defines us: Jesus does! And I've learned firsthand that you can hit your goal weight and still be incredibly unhealthy mentally, emotionally, and physically. Because health isn't just about what we put into our bodies or what we see in the mirror; it's also about what we allow to take up residence in our minds and hearts and what we believe about ourselves and about God.In this episode, Rachael Gilbert, the author of Image RESTored: Tear Down Shame and Insecurity to Experience a Body Image Renovation, shares powerful insights and personal journey shed light on the often unspoken struggles many face. We delve into the impact of trauma on body image and how addressing both big and small traumas is crucial for healing. Rachael's expertise as a therapist guides us through the process, offering practical tools and a fresh perspective on finding freedom.Rachael reveals the significance of addressing both big and small traumas that impact how we view ourselves. She explains how these experiences create barriers and impact our lives, and she shares her own transformative journey, emphasizing the power of processing trauma. Her insights provide keys to unlock a new way of thinking and living, so I hope you will join us as we explore the layers of healing, embracing your identity in Christ, and discovering the path towards body image restoration. In This Episode[0:35] - Today's guest is Rachael Gilbert, author of the book Image RESTored![1:17] - Rachael shares her personal body image struggles and healing journey.[2:25] - Blending fitness expertise and therapy, Rachael guides body image challenges.[4:33] - I ask Rachael to share some of her personal journey.[7:11] - Rachael shares how she began to seek help and embrace change.[9:32] - It starts with recognizing the desire for change, then embracing tools.[10:42] - Rachael advocates for identifying core beliefs and challenging them.[13:50] - Challenge lies with God's truth, reshaping thought patterns for healing.[16:01] - Rachael argues for creating a safe, empathetic space for girls' body image struggles.[19:57] - It was so important to Rachael to address her trauma, a key topic in her book.[23:29] - Embrace insecurities, and confront them with tools for lasting freedom.[25:20] - I add that we should recognize insecurities and find truth in God's love.[26:46] - A secure attachment to God improves body image struggles.[28:59] - Rachael advises us to open our hearts to Jesus; He heals even the most broken parts.[30:26] - I explain why I love the title of Rachael's book.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineImage RESTored: Tear Down Shame and Insecurity to Experience a Body Image Renovation by Rachael Gilbert10 Days to Be a Happier MomSign up for the Hot Deals Email ListMoneySavingMom.comMy Instagram account (I'd love for you to follow me there!
