He has run a business program for executives at Emerson College. And he began his career producing concerts at college for groups like the Fugees, Nas, Dave Matthews Band the Roots and Tribe Called Quest, before starting his promotions company, Seven Heads Entertainment. We talk about his plans for BRIC, his career and how hip hop saved his life. ***I DO NOT OWN THE RIGHTS TO ANY MUSIC PLAYED IN THIS EPISODE*****To find an artist like Jacksonville, Florida transplant Jadon Woodard is rare. He relocated to the Northeast for his college education, Woodard's career as an actor, poet and emcee has seen prodigious growth. Though he wouldn't be mad about rapping in leather sweatpants on the Champs-Elysees, Woodard can best be defined as being the type of person comfortable dropping bars while waiting for the subway train, winning freestyle competitions at the 2012 Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival or yes, donning a teenage student's high school uniform and rapping in a Sprite commercial. His level of comfort in both himself and his craftsmanship is truly impressive, and makes him an ideal representative of the culture's brilliant past and hope for an intelligent progression of rap music into the future. Woodard has been signed to labels (2012 with now defunct group Train Robbers to Boss Sounds LLC), but the deeper story to be told in his art is in his level of dedication to discovering and successfully utilizing avenues to progressing his craft. As an artist, his list of brand collaborations in the past five years reads like a who's who of America's most visible organizations with Nickelodeon, Coors Light, Sprite, the NBA's New York Knicks and Usher's New Look Foundation among the highlights. Clearly, whereas some artists believe that great talent eventually rises to the top, Woodard is a believer in evangelizing his talent not just on the streets, but then climbing to the tallest mountains possible so that as many people as humanly possible can hear his voice. In an era wherein rap music is ubiquitous, there are few in its midst who are fearless, unique and in full pursuit of being not just fabulously rich, but also tremendously creative and undoubtedly important.--- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/iamlovereigns/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/iamlovereigns/support

We're then joined by the founder of the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival, Mr. Wes Jackson. The wait is over! We are finally revealing our new host! But before we do, we have some sad news. Our beloved co-host Emily will be stepping away from the podcast. Emily has helped in countless ways bringing the podcast to the place it is today. Without Emily's contributions, Brew Roots as you know was not possible, and for that, we are forever grateful.Luckily, for us, Emily will continue to contribute to the podcast for the foreseeable future. As always, with bad news comes good news. This week we announce our new host Erika Anderson! Erika coming on board was an extremely easy decision to make, as her resume speaks for itself. Not only is Erika an avid homebrewer, she manages a Beer and Wine Hobby Store, is a member of Pink Boots Society and is respected in the Massachusetts Beer Scene. So welcome Erika to the podcast! Now on to the episode!Matt sat down and shared a beer with Dane and Dagan co-owners at Liars Bench. The duo became friends quickly at college in New Hampshire and after graduation both Dane and Dagan settled on different coasts which unbeknownst to the duo laid the foundation of what became Liars Bench. BANG! @southernvangard #radio Ep 149! Whew folks, last week was a barnstormer personally for your guys Doe & Meeks - massive personal challenges on the home front coupled with a few snow days left us bailing on an episode & interview session. Yeah, we know we said it was coming later in the week on Thurs - we apologize. ALAS! Here we are - our Ep149 mix with so much heat you won’t be able to stand it, AND an interview session with top shelf NYC photographer Photo Rob! If you don’t know the resume, you’re about to find out - it’s pretty likely some of his photos are your favorite and are found a number of hip-hop albums and publications you own. Remember those Jay Electronica & Jay-Z flicks from the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival a few years ago - yep, that’s just a small sample. In this episode of PoPolitickin, we politick with Napoleon Da Legend. Napoleon Da Legend is a Paris-born, East African and Washington DC-raised, Brooklyn-based lyricist who evokes the bleak reality of the world today without losing hope for a better tomorrow. N.D.L.’s innovative short-film “Wise Men” featuring the late great Sean Price quickly became a cult hit among Hip-Hop heads with its overt challenge of the music industry establishment. His signature wordplay and voice rose from relative obscurity after the groundbreaking “Oxygen” record featuring Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon. He has since been touring Europe and the United States having been tapped to perform at the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival in June 2015 and France’s HipOpsession Festival alongside legendary French DJ Poska in February 2016. He was a featured artist twice on the Huffington Post Black Voices BARS in March 2016 and August 2016. In June 2016 he released the “Steal This Mixtape” project with no features where he self-admittedly “stole” beats from some of his favorite producers (J Dilla, Madlib, RZA, Onra… etc), followed by "Steal This Mixtape Too" just 3 months later featuring the motivational "Black Privilege" single. These projects have garnered buzz around the Hip-Hop world showcasing his growth with heart-felt, emotionally driven rhymes over carefully selected soundscapes. N.D.L has also started the official "Steal This Mixtape Tour" selling out venues in 14 cities in France and Belgium including the Finale of the 2017 Hip Opsession Festival in Nantes. He would be back in Europe a few months later for 8 more shows dubbed the "Back For More" tour. http://www.napoleondalegend.com
The God MC Rakim checked in with Angie Martinez to let us know what we can expect from him at the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival this weekend when he blesses the stage.
In this episode, Manny Faces recapped a few exciting events from the past week, and broke down some of the many upcoming events scheduled for the next few months in NY hip hop music and culture, including Freestyle Mondays, the Tools of War old school hip hop park jams, and the (overpriced??) Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival.
Both the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival and Hot 97's “Summer Jam” released schedules and lineups in past days. https://www.mannyfaces.com/ (Manny Faces) provided a breakdown of the artists set to perform, as well as — particularly in the case of the multi-day Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival — information regarding other events scheduled to take place. The episode's sponsor, aside from https://www.birthplacemag.com/ (New York hip-hop's) #1 website and event calendar, http://BirthplaceMag.com (BirthplaceMag.com), was End of the Weak, a staple of underground and independent hip-hop music and culture in New York City. Running for more than 15 years, and having branched out to multiple countries throughout the world, EODub continues to be the standard-bearer for hip-hop showcases and talent competitions. The next End of the Weak is Sunday, April 30, 2017 at Bowery Electric in NYC. Lastly, in his “Words I MannyFest” segment, Manny called out Common and other hip-hop elder statesfolks, for missed opportunities when addressing media about the state of “consciousness” in hip-hop music. While it is easy to critique “mainstream,” and give props to the “go-to” notable artists who are bucking the mainstream trend, like Kendrick Lamar and Chance The Rapper, to sum up hip-hop's entire counter-culture, social justice, black empowerment and self-love to merely these two artists, does a gigantic disservice to the thousands of hip-hop-related artists and organizations that are fighting that good fight.
In episode 04 of Brooklyn Historical Society's podcast Flatbush + Main, co-hosts Zaheer Ali and Julie Golia examine the history and evolution of hip hop in Brooklyn. Joined by Wes Jackson, founder and Executive Director of the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival, we consider how Brooklyn shaped the trajectory of this powerful cultural genre - and how hip hop, in turn, shaped Brooklyn and Brooklynites. We chat with media producer, archivist, and educator Martha Diaz about what it means to document and archive such a multilayered and global movement as hip hop. Finally, in the "Voices of Brooklyn" segment, we listen to author, filmmaker, and cultural critic Nelson George describe how hip hop communities operated on the ground in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Fort Greene.
