Today we had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Michael Oxton, co-founder of Night Shift Brewing! Michael takes us way back to the early days of Night Shift, when he and two friends bought a “brew at home” kit and started making beer in their Sommerville apartment. They opened their first location in Everett in 2012 where they brewed 250 barrels of beer. Fast forward to today when they brew 35 thousand barrels of beer annually! Michael walks us through some of the keys to success in this industry - including switching from bottles to cans, starting a distribution company, and saying “no” to a massively tempting deal for the name “Night Shift.” Michael is so down to earth, and has never let his success cloud his vision of the company mission. We absolutely love this conversation. Enjoy! Josiah Didier has been playing professional hockey for nine years, but arguably the biggest honor of his career is his current role as the Captain of the Providence Bruins.  Dids joins the show to break down the excellent regular season that the P-Bruins finished with in 2022-23.  We flash back to Josiah's time as an assistant captain at Denver under now-Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery, winning a conference tournament and playing with current NHL role players.  We discuss one of Dids' favorite moments this year - scoring two of his four goals this season on his 30th birthday against Hartford in April.  Josiah also discusses his upcoming trip to Iceland, some of his favorite golf courses around New England, and a surprising fact about B's prospect Georgii Merkulov's golf game. In Beers, it's two Boston selections!  Jake reviews a jacked-up Mexican lager, "Cerveza Fiesta," from Night Shift Brewing in Boston's Lovejoy Wharf.  Will reviews a recent trip to Notch Brewing in Brighton, where their affinity for Czech, German & Austrian ales is second-to-none in the Boston area.  Our Business segment features a breakdown on Tom Brady's purchase of a stake in the Las Vegas Raiders, and we evaluate teams that are prime to relocate across the sports world. We finish with a recap of the Stanley Cup Playoffs so far, the potential for the Heat to go the distance, if Nikola Jokic is a top-five active NBA player, and where LeBron will end up next year. Craft Brew News 09/06/19(Courtesy of Brewbound.com) https://www.brewbound.com/Night Shift to Open $10 Million Brewery in Philadelphia, Expand Production in Everett, MAEverett, Massachusetts-based Night Shift Brewing announced plans Wednesday to open a $10 million, 130,000 sq. ft. production brewery in Philadelphia.Speaking to Brewbound, Night Shift co-founder Michael Oxton said the company is “committed” to opening the new brewery before the end of 2020.The Philadelphia project is being financed through a combination of cash flow and bank debt, he added.Night Shift’s three founders — Oxton, Rob Burns and Michael O’Mara — collectively own about 80% of the business, with friends and family holding the remaining stake in the company.Oxton said “Since our beginning, we haven’t taken on any more investors and we have no plans to do so,”. “Our runway is fiercely independent for 100-plus years, and we have no plans of raising outside capital and letting another firm sort of dictate our decisions.”Earlier this month, the Philadelphia Board of Zoning Adjustment approved Night Shift’s permit to operate a taproom inside a former Anheuser-Busch wholesaler warehouse, according to the Boston Globe, which first reported the story Wednesday. In Philadelphia, Night Shift will lease the building, which is already equipped with refrigeration space, loading docks and a potential taproom location. The company plans to install a 100-barrel brewhouse in the space, which will immediately unlock 30,000 barrels of initial capacity. Over time, Night Shift could scale production at the facility to 200,000 barrels of capacity, although Oxton stressed that Night Shift remains committed to a philosophy of letting demand dictate growth. In addition to opening the Philadelphia brewery, Night Shift is upgrading its Everett headquarters, replacing its 20-barrel brewhouse with a 60-barrel system. The new brewhouse is expected to be operational next month. All of that demand has Night Shift on pace for 50% volume growth by the end of 2019. Oxton projects the company will produce more than 40,000 barrels, up from around 30,000 barrels in 2018.Craft Brew Alliance Exploring All Options in the Wake of No Offer from A-BCraft Brew Alliance CEO Andy Thomas had a rare off-cycle conference call with investors and analysts today after his company’s largest playmate, Anheuser-Busch InBev, declined its long-held option to purchase the Portland, Oregon-headquartered craft beer maker. The call came two weeks after the August 23 deadline for A-B, which already owns 31.3% of CBA, to make an offer of $24.50 per share (about $328 million) to purchase the remainder of the company or pay a one-time fee of $20 million. A-B opted for the latter, leaving questions about the world’s largest beer manufacturer’s future interest in the smaller beer company known for brands such as Kona Brewing, Widmer Brothers, Redhook and others.Since that time, CBA’s stock (BREW) has declined from $12.96 on August 22, the day before the deadline, to $9.28 at the end of trading today. It has sparked speculation that CBA might look to sell to another suitor or divest its brands, including fast-growing Kona. Another narrative emerged saying CBA and/or Kona were too entangled with A-B to ever be unlinked.Thomas stressed that CBA’s management team is being “exhaustive” in making sure all options are considered before choosing the correct path forward. The company’s leadership team has begun working with independent board members, bankers and external advisors to explore alternatives, “strategic and otherwise,” and the conversations with A-B have continued as CBA tries to understand what a future relationship looks like, he said. “We wouldn’t be in the discussions that we’re in right now if we thought status quo is an acceptable outcome,” he added. “It is not.”The biggest CBA block is that Kona brand, which is pushing 500,000 barrels and growing “high-single to low-double-digits,” Thomas said.Boston Beer Company is Taking Truly Hard Seltzer on Tap to Bars and RestaurantsTruly Hard Seltzer-maker Boston Beer Company announced today the nationwide launch of “Truly on Tap,” a new product that the company is calling ”one of the first hard seltzers available on draft” across the country.Boston Beer CEO Dave Burwick told Brewbound, via email, that Truly on Tap is the Pure offering renamed. He noted that Truly on Tap shares many of the attributes of a vodka soda: “effervescent, clear, finished with a squeeze of fresh fruit” but with a lower ABV.According to the sales sheet, Boston Beer appears to be positioning Truly on Tap as an alternative to light beer and spirits, attempting to capture happy hour and game-day occasions during the upcoming football season.Citing off-premise sales data from market research firm IRI, the sales sheet notes that hard seltzer sales year-to-date have surpassed those of IPAs — the most popular craft beer style — through July 7.Additionally, the company calls out a Radius study, which found that two-thirds of drinkers said they would substitute drinking a beer at a bar with hard seltzer if it were available. Meanwhile, the company’s two flagship brands — Bud Light and Budweiser — continue to lose volume although both still rank among the top five Brewery Openings on the Rise in Major U.S. Population Centers, BA ReportsU.S. cities with populations in excess of 5 million have seen the most percentage growth of brewery openings in the past five years, according to Brewers Association chief economist Bart Watson. In an email to Brewbound, Watson explained that the growth in the number of breweries in the U.S.’s largest cities is partially due to those locations playing “catch-up” with the rest of the country.Watson’s data — including an interactive map — revealed that eight metro areas are now home to more than 100 breweries.Leading the way is Chicago, with 167 breweries. Interviewed Chet Brett (Brand Manager) from Tribes Brewing Co. in Mokena, IL - Chicago area– they are doing well and selling a lot of beer.Trailing Chicago are long-time beer meccas and other major population centers, including Denver (158), Seattle (153), San Diego (150), Los Angeles (146), New York (141), Portland, Oregon (139), and Philadelphia (113).The last time Watson charted the data — in 2013 — Seattle’s 87 breweries were the most in the nation. Chicago ranked fifth that year with 62 breweries, trailing Portland, Oregon (77), San Diego (76) and Denver (63).Rankings are fleeting, however, as more breweries open their doors and shutter. According to the BA, 7,000 breweries were in operation as of the end of October, with potentially as many as 1,000 openings in 2018. Meanwhile, Watson told Brewbound earlier this year that he anticipates as many as 300 brewery closures by the end of 2018, as the gap between openings and closings begins to converge.News courtesy of Brewbound (https://www.brewbound.com/)Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel. The sun is finally out in Boston, the weather is getting warmer, and the scent of burgers can be detected around the neighborhood. Summer is officially here! Today's conversation with true tickets Co-Founder and CEO Matt Zarracina gives us insight into running with a strong early application of a burgeoning technology, in this case blockchain. The idea for leading the ticketing world onto the blockchain came when white-boarding blockchain applications with a subject-matter expert and later getting a call from his friend on exactly the same concept. Once the product vision and a friends-and-family round came together, Matt and his Co-Founders Steven Dobesh and David Piskovich jumped in full-time to make trackable and verifiable event ticketing a reality. Let's catch up with Matt to check in on true tickets's progress to-date. ----- And, while things may be slowing down a bit in the office, the startups of Early Stage have been achieving incredible milestones. - Digital health startup Wellist from Episode 7 just closed a $10M Series A funding round, led by Summation Health, Cedars-Sinai Health System, and .406 Ventures. - Night Shift Brewing from Episode 31 just announced Night Shift Lovejoy, a brand spanking new brewpub on the first floor of Converse's HQ near Boston's TD Garden. Anna Jobe, called out in the podcast by Co-Founder Michael Oxton as an unsung hero, will manage the new location. - An SEC filing from May 10 shows cybersecurity startup CYBRIC from episode 32 receiving almost $500,000 in follow-on funding. - Vesper, the startup building miniature microphone technology from Episode 15, just picked up $23M in Series B funding, led by American Family Ventures, to help them scale the mass production of their microphones and support R&D and sales. Have you ever tried to brew beer in one of those cheap Mr. Beer plastic barrels? How did the batch turn out? Michael Oxton, Co-Founder of Night Shift Brewing out of Everett, MA, started his foray into the beer world in exactly the same manner. For the record, his first batch turned out horrible -- it tasted like rotten cider! Michael and his fellow conspirators wouldn't be deterred, and soon their house was overrun with beer-making equipment and hundreds of friends more than willing to taste test the beer at one of their many house parties. With $100,000 in friends and family money, they opened their first brewery and sold 200 barrels in the first year, then 700 the year after, then 1,500, 4,000, 10,000, and 20,000 in 2017. Night Shift Brewing was officially a runaway hit, with lines continually out the door of their new Everett Brewery and legions of loyal Night Shifters saddling up to the bar to test out their latest concoctions. Boston Magazine even named them the best craft brewery in Boston for 2017. With production maxed out at their brewery, they added a RI-based contract brewer Isle Brewer's Guild to help meet demand from Massachusetts liquor stores and bars. The sky is the limit for this trio of co-founders and their growing team, but under the facade of automatic success was a ton of hard work and navigating a number of life-or-death challenges. No doubt, Michael and his team will face new hardships as they push themselves to innovation on their model. First, the brewery. Now, a craft beer distribution company. What will they dive into next? I had so much fun interviewing Michael at their Chelsea, MA, distribution center last week, and I know you'll enjoy the conversation as well.

In episode 72 of Taste Radio, we feature a conversation with Poorvi Patodia, who is the founder and CEO of Biena, a fast-growing maker of roasted chickpea snacks. Just five years since its launch, Biena is distributed at 15,000 locations across the U.S. and available at Whole Foods, Target, Sprouts and Stop & Shop. Patodia outlined her vision for roasted chickpeas and how the combination of familiar snack flavors and a healthy, whole food option continues to win over investors, distributors, retailers and consumers. She also discussed why Biena attempts to operate more like a tech firm than a food company and the decision to launch a co-branded line of snacks with Weight Watchers. Also included in this episode: BevNET editor-in-chief Jeff Klineman and sr. brand specialist Jon Landis explored the world of retail activation through encounters with the High Brew Liner, a giant bus turned into sampling cafe that is on tour throughout the summer. And in the latest edition of Elevator Talk, we talk with Rob Burns, the co-founder of Night Shift Brewing, a craft beer maker based in Everett, Mass. Show Notes: 1:07: Would You Like to Sample My Yams? -- In-store sampling has long been an effective path to trial consumption. But some demos are executed better than others. What are ways that you’ve been impressed by a sampling opportunity? Any experiences that you’ve found particularly impressive… or bad? The hosts discussed the importance of brand advocacy, enthusiasm and engagement and the burdens of retailer required sampling. 7:27: Interview: Poorvi Patodia, founder and CEO, Biena -- Project NOSH editor Carol Ortenberg and BevNET managing editor Ray Latif met with Biena founder/CEO Poorvi Patodia and discussed about the company’s rapid rise and how she’s shepherded its growth amid surging demand for healthy, plant-based snacks. Patodia also discussed why she runs Biena more like a tech firm than a food company and learning lessons from her first few years as an entrepreneur. 43:19: Interview: Mari Johnson, EVP of Marketing, High Brew Coffee -- Inside the High Brew Liner, we spoke with Johnson about the aims and techniques that would cause a company to sink money into this kind of experiential investment, and recorded some of the interactions that come when a team explores different ways to grow awareness and drive trial. 1:00:13: Elevator Talk: Robert Burns, Co-Founder, Night Shift Brewing -- We meet up with Burns, who co-founded Night Shift Brewing, a fast-growing craft brewery based in Everett, Mass. Brands in this episode: Drink Maple, Sound Sparkling Tea, Biena, High Brew Coffee, Night Shift Brewing. For sponsorship opportunities, feedback and suggestions contact podcast@bevnet.com.

Tim Oxton is the Art Director for Night Shift Brewing. It's a role that much like the brewery's success and growth in the craft beer space, has grown organically. Being hired at your brother's company for anyone can be exciting and stressful all at once, but it is also a source of pride for Tim. Over time what started out as helping his brother out evolved into a full-time position that is integral in the image and brand that is NS and Tim's hard work and passion for it play a big part in that. Tim not only is responsible for the labels, but also the photography and images of the brewery. It was great to learn about his process, working with his brother, his photography projects and to chat and share a laugh. This is almost like a podcast version of his strangers with random object project - we'd never met (and still haven't in 3-D) but shared a moment and some stories.

Season 3, Episode 8 – This week, beers from Night Shift Brewing and Perennial Artisan Ales. This week, Nagel brought the pain with SoCal rarities from Perennial Artisan Ales and Night Shift Brewing. Before we get into the beers, it should be known that Greg’s cask ale festival called “Firkfest” is going down on March 19, 2016 in Anaheim, California. We’ve been promoting this event for good reason—it’s a unique festival to Southern California, featuring 50 breweries and 30 cask beers, ranging from the more traditional cask conditioned beers to firkins with chocolate, peppers, or whatever else brewers want to add to their standard release and one-off beers. Get your tickets at firkfest.com. Excellent Brews from Perennial and Night Shift. First up on the show this week is a brew from Night Shift Brewing, a gose made with oysters. Oysters are more commonly used in stouts to add a salty, briny/dry character. In this case, they were added during the boil of the gose, which is a beer style that is inherently salty. Adding the brine character from oysters is a natural fit for the gose style of beer. Next up is another gose made by Perennial Artisan Ales, but this one goes (oh, words) in a different direction. This beer also has a tart, salty quality, but is made with lemon peel and orange peel, along with a healthy dose of key lime juice. This beer is great—a true summer seeeper. We wrap up with two more Night Shift beers, Ever Weisse (radness) and Maracuya. Night Shift is reminiscent of The Bruery in terms of their curious exploration and their quality execution of unusual beer styles. At the same time, Perennial is also kicking ass and taking names. We can get Perennial in SoCal right now, but Night Shift would be a welcome addition…just saying’. BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. Jeff and Gabe talk about how important it is to revisit your messes on a yearly basis. Is it a good idea to hang onto boxes of books in your attic for years and never open them? Do we really need to keep the tour postcard for R.E.M.'s Reckoning Tour from the early 80's? This is a seriously weird look into the minds of the hosts, as evidenced in Gabe's show notes listed below (Jeff scribbled his into a Field Notes and are illegible).
