THE LEGENDARY DETROIT DJ JOINS THE CONVERSATION
Guess Who's Back..
On this episode, Mike talks with HD Jones and Susan Jones on the Front Porch about things their kids gave them that have meaning.....what does that have to do with kidney stones? Who knows. The good news is that they also found some stuff in the Bible about why it's important to look back as we are headed forward. Good stuff! And on Inny or Outty, well, you'll just have to watch and listen .... there's not a good way to describe this one. What a great planet! House Shoes is a legendary DJ and Producer. I recently posted a video on the main channel all about De La Soul's Stakes is High, which was produced by J Dilla. A short clip from this conversation is in that video, because House Shoes put out the Jay Dee Unreleased EP, which features a remix of Stakes is High. Well today I'm bringing you the FULL conversation - we talk about his beginnings in music, the scene at St. Andrews Hall, some Dilla, His Record Label Street Corner Music, Fatherhood, a Crazy Story about the Secret Service, and just generally nerd out about music. You'll want to follow House Shoes online: Street Corner Music: https://streetcornerscm.comHouse Shoes on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/shoeshouseInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/houseshoes/?hl=en

We stay in touch with the streets, and the streets said, "we want House Shoes on the podcast". So we made it happen. We linked up with the man to talk about his life, career, and everything in between. We go back to the early scene in Detroit, making his debut solo album, Let It Go, the importance of record stores in the community, and, as always, you can expect some good old-fashioned Rap nerd talk. Known for his outspokenness online and in real life, House Shoes pulls no punches regarding what he cares about; in this case, it's the music. Join the PATREON House Shoes just might be one of hip hop's most passionate torchbearers. The DJ/Producer/record label owner was an early champion of J. Dilla, and has since helped shine a light on a slew of incredibly dope artists – Quelle Chris, Elzhi, Stro Elliot, to name just a random few – through his co-signs, his production work, and through releases via his record label Street Corner Music. Shoes makes a return to the show (his first appearance in 2020 got lost in the archive) and talks about everything from the business of running a record label to the key to putting together a great album to the reason why he still hasn't forgiven Bob James. The guest for this episode is Butcher Bear, the Austin, TX-based owner of (iN)Sect Records, co-founder of Exploded Drawing, and drummer in the band Black Mercy. Always donning the full-on bear costume, I go way back with him from the days of my original Renaissance Soul website (I did a (iN)Sect podcast mix a while back called ‘The Demon Within’), and Butcher Bear has always been a huge supporter of Detroit music having released projects on (iN)Sect Records featuring Guilty Simpson, House Shoes, Self Says, Chanes, Dakim, and Nameless. As long as we have known each other, this was the first time we talked at any length, and it was great to finally catch up with Butcher Bear. During our conversation, we talked about his upbringing in Austin, which included a lot of hardcore shows, along with time being in bands and becoming a producer himself. We also get into the conception of (iN)Sect Records and his philosophy in how he releases projects and the creation of the Exploded Drawing events. Butcher Bear is simply just a music nerd and has such a passion for a wild array of genres, that he’s always been a blessing to know. We need more people like Butcher Bear in the arts world. Uncle Shoes swings by the podcast to keep the Detroit vibe going through the podcast. As we reflect on his time on the West Coast for the last decade we deep dive into the legacy of Bugz, Proof, Dilla, and he responds to Esham from last week as we finally put that to bed. In the end, its all love and business. Growth, entrepreneurship and having an ear for music is what we chat about as we navigate stories of Shoes DJing at his high school, to become a living legend, fatherhood, and whats up ahead for his label Street Corner Music.
