Camille Preaker has serious mommy issues, and her sister, Amma, isn't going to win any awards for being well-adjusted either. Meanwhile, the ill-behaved girls of Wind Gap are turning up dead. Tune in as we talk to Lara Bricker, author, journalist, and Crime Writers On panelist, about what Gillian Flynn's "Sharp Objects" gets right about Munchausen's by Proxy, her personal experience with malevolent mothers, the Gypsy Rose Blanchard of it all, and the reality of being a small-town reporter. Lara also dishes about living in Exeter, New Hampshire which is simply infested with writers like Dan Brown and Joe Hill. Bonus: Find out which local used to wrestle with John Irving! And when you're done listening, head over to order Lara's new book, "Dead on Deadline" from Water Street Books. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/midlit/support

Travel with Dr. Sam and Dr. Fran to Wind Gap with Camille Preaker as they investigate HBO's Sharp Objects. Who is murdering children in Wind Gap? What is going on with Camille, Amma, and Adora? The doctors solve those questions quicker than Detective Richard and the police chief solve the town's crimes. Dr. Sam and Dr. Fran review complex topics seen in the show including Camille's history of abuse, alcohol use, and non-suicidal self-injury. Would we expect someone to engage in self-harm the unique way Camille does? Given Camille's difficult history and current challenges, what could treatment for her ideally look like? Learn more about an uncommon disorder which is commonly portrayed in entertainment. Dr. Sam and Dr. Fran dive into Adora poisoning her children and review a new diagnosis—factitious disorder imposed on another (previously called Munchausen syndrome by proxy). That also brings us to a new Diagnosis Graveyard.  We will tell mama if you don't listen to this week's session! Content Warning: episode discusses suicide, non-suicidal self-injury/self-harm, and child abuse

Sarjan ohjaaja Jean-Marc Vallée tunnetaan myös tv-sarjasta Big Little Lies, jossa naishahmojen keskinäinen virtapiiri on hyvin jännitteinen. J.P. Pulkkisen kanssa Sharp Objectsista keskustelee Helsingin Sanomien toimittaja Jussi Ahlroth. Kuva: AOP

The twisted, hellish descent into Camille Preaker’s life in Wind Gap comes to an end in the finale episode of HBO’s series as well as in the final two chapters of Gillian Flynn’s novel. Series creator Marti Noxon and director Jean-Marc Vallée stick the landing with a gripping, shocking hour of television that will have people talking for years to come. The differences in the book vs show make for a lively debate. Topics include: How to tie the myth of Persephone to this story, the phenomenon of false confessions, the criminal justice system’s handling of minors, the meaning behind “don’t tell mama,” the secret father theory, and the choice to include post-credit scenes. HBO’s limited series “Sharp Objects” proves to be a powerful adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s novel from the jump. Creator Mari Noxon and director Jean-Marc Vallée craft a sweaty, oppressive, and bloody look at small town life in Middle America. Amy Adams’ portrayal of journalist Camille Preaker returning to Wind Gap to cover a young girl’s murder is heartbreaking and bleak, but undeniably captivating to watch as she wrestles demons who aren’t remotely tackled, only mildly concussed.   Episode 1: 17:23 Episode 2: 36:51 Episode 3: 51:59 Episode 4: 1:01:31   THE PLAN: This week they cover chapters 1-8, next week episodes 1-4 of the TV show, then back to the novel for chapters 9-16, then episodes 5-7 of the show, then finish up with a combination book and film episode covering the final two chapters and the finale of the TV series. 5 podcast episodes in total.   Ink to Film is now on Patreon!
