Q&A on the Netflix series The Beast in Me with actor Matthew Rhys. Moderated by Jim Halterman. Author Aggie Wiggs, grieving the loss of her son, finds new purpose unraveling the mystery behind neighbor Nile Jarvis' vanished wife and his suspicious dealings.
Widow's Bay Editors – Isaac Hagy, ACE; Kyle Reiter, ACE and Jen Bryson The editors of Widow's Bay may not live on a cursed New England island, but after years of working together across shows like Atlanta, Station Eleven and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Isaac Hagy, Kyle Reiter and Jen Bryson have developed the kind of shared creative history that makes them feel right at home in one. Created by Katie Dippold for Apple TV, Widow's Bay stars Matthew Rhys as Tom Loftis, the skeptical mayor of a strange little island town where the locals believe the place is cursed. Tom would very much like to turn Widow's Bay into a thriving tourist destination. Unfortunately, the island has other ideas. The series also stars Kate O'Flynn, Stephen Root, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll and Dale Dickey. For Isaac, Kyle and Jen, the show was another chance to reunite with longtime collaborator Hiro Murai and post producer Kaitlin Waldron. Isaac's creative relationship with Hiro goes back nearly twenty years, starting with no-budget music videos before eventually leading to Atlanta. Kyle joined that extended creative family through Kaitlin Waldron and Atlanta, while Jen came up through the same post team, beginning as a post PA before eventually moving into the editor's chair. In our interview, the editors talk about how the show was first described to them as something close to "ten episodes of Teddy Perkins," with additional reference points including Jaws, John Carpenter films, Stephen King stories and the specific textures of rural coastal New England. The island itself was designed to feel contemporary, but also strangely out of time — a place without cell phones, without modern comforts, and possibly without a sensible tourism strategy. ISAAC HAGY, ACE Isaac Hagy, ACE is an editor whose work includes the feature films Waves and The Friend, as well as television series such as Atlanta, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Station Eleven, American Vandal, Chef's Table and Sirens. He has received multiple Emmy and ACE nominations for his work, including recognition for Atlanta and Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Across his work in television and film, Isaac has helped shape stories that blend tonal precision, visual invention and deeply character-driven editing. KYLE REITER, ACE Kyle Reiter, ACE is an editor whose credits include Atlanta, Barry, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Station Eleven and Black Rabbit. A multiple Emmy nominee, Kyle won an ACE Eddie Award for his work on Atlanta. His editing work spans comedy, drama, surrealism and genre storytelling, often finding the rhythm between deadpan humor, emotional honesty and unexpected tonal shifts. JEN BRYSON Jen Bryson is an editor whose credits include Atlanta, Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Sirens. After years of working with the post team connected to Hiro Murai, Kaitlin Waldron, Isaac Hagy and Kyle Reiter, Jen moved from post production assistant work into assistant editing and then into the editor's chair. Her work reflects a sharp eye for performance, character detail and the delicate balance between comedy, tension and emotional truth. Visit ExtremeMusic for all your production audio needs. Hear Isaac discuss his work on SIRENS. Check out Kyle's interview for BLACK RABBIT. Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode. Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube.

Mo Walker joins Matt and Dawn to review four new shows available to watch this week. First, The Burroughs from Netflix, which functions almost as an elderly version of Stranger Things set inside a retirement community, led by performances from Alfred Molina and Geena Davies. Next, on Sky, Ponies, a series set in the 70's which focuses on two men who go undercover with the CIA. The BBC's Two Weeks in August which could be seen as an attempt to make a British version of The White Lotus but plays more like a terrible sequel to a Channel 5 drama the team hated years ago. Lastly, Dawn's favourite new show, Apple TV's Widow's Bay, which follows a Mayor played by the always brilliant Matthew Rhys, in a cursed town. For our quiz, Dawn challenges the boys to name as many Game of Thrones cast members as they can.
Today, we are joined by Kate O'Flynn from the Apple TV show Widow's Bay. We got the chance to discuss her superstitions, which include some rather interesting bird-related ideas. We also spoke about her recent turn taking the lead in Ep. 4 of Widow's Bay, "Beach Reads", which sees O'Flynn's character, Patricia, assistant to Matthew Rhys' Mayor Tom, organising a town party while dealing with some old school "friends". It's safe to say that, thanks to an ominous party-planning book, things take a turn for the supernatural. We also discuss if she walked away with any party tips from this experience.. Thanks to Kate for sitting down with us for this wonderful chat about the show, now streaming on Apple TV. About "Widow's Bay" In "Widow's Bay," something lurks beneath the surface. Mayor Tom Loftis (Rhys) is desperate to revive his struggling community. There's no Wi-Fi, spotty cellular reception and he must contend with superstitious locals who believe their island is cursed. He wants these people to respect him. They don't. They think he is soft and cowardly. And he is. But Loftis is determined to build a better future for his teenage son and turn the island into a tourist destination. Miraculously, he succeeds: tourists are finally coming. Unfortunately, the locals were right. After decades of calm, the old stories that seemed too ludicrous to be true start happening again. Blending genuine horror with character-driven comedy, "Widow's Bay" features an ensemble cast led by Rhys, Kate O'Flynn, Stephen Root, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll and Dale Dickey. The supporting cast includes K Callan and Emmy Award winner Jeff Hiller. Hailing from Apple Studios, "Widow's Bay" is created, showrun and executive produced by Dippold. Murai executive produces through his banner Chum Films alongside Carver Karaszewski, Claudia Shin and Rhys. Murai directs five episodes this season, in addition to directors Ti West, Sam Donovan and Andrew DeYoung.
Hayley Campbell, Scott Bryan and Naga Munchetty review the week's biggest new TV and streaming releases. This week the trio reviewed 'Widow's Bay' a ten-part comedy horror on Apple TV. Matthew Rhys stars at the mayor of a fictional New England town, who refuses to believe the superstitions of the residents who claim the island is cursed, only to begin encountering various supernatural happenings himself.Next, Kylie' a documentary on Netflix looking into the pop stars' life and her career spanning over 40 years and still counting. Produced by John Battsek and directed by Michael Harte, the series dives into her time on Neighbors, overcoming her cancer diagnosis and the preparations for her anniversary tour next year. Finally, 'Dear England' on BBC One and the iPlayer, a four-part drama based on the stage play by James Graham which explores the England men's football team - and its relationship with national identity. Joseph Fiennes stars as Gareth Southgate.Remember you can email mustwatch@bbc.co.uk to have your say.
It's Apple TV+ this week on the podcast, as that's the last place on TV, or at least one of them, that's still taking big creative swings and also releasing episodes serially. Longtime contributor Omar Gallaga joins Neal Pollack this week to discuss two Apple+ shows. The first, Margot's Got Money Troubles, based on a novel by Rufi Thorpe, comes to us from David E. Kelley, who's been making TV for decades. But this show feels fresh and modern thanks to a winning lead performance from Elle Fanning and a nuanced look at the Only Fans universe. The cast, which includes Nick Offerman, Greg Kinnear, Nicole Kidman, and Marcia Gay Harden, is uniformly excellent, but Michelle Pfeiffer steals the show with a late-career master turn as Margot's mother, a performance so fully realized it doesn't even feel like she's acting.Much more stylized, but no less effective, is Widow's Bay, a new comedy-horror semi-anthology series from comedy writer Katie Dippold, which embraces and deconstructs horror tropes with unabashed delight. It's like the X-Files meets Northern Exposure, with a touch of Twin Peaks and Parks and Recreation. The cast includes Matthew Rhys, Kate O'Flynn, and Stephen Root, and a bevy of monsters and supernatural happenings that bedevils a cursed Massachusetts island. Four episodes in, and Widow's Bay is already a TV legend. Omar and Neal give it their highest recommendation, and no one has better taste than they do.Enjoy the show!

Plus we tackle your theories after the 5th episode 'What to Expect on Your Trip' of AppleTV's new hit show WIDOW'S BAY. Is this all "crazy stuff just happens" like the old TV show 'Lost'? Hey hey, it's DtW on the way, and we're setting up shop in Widow's Bay! Dan and Raul are checking out the homey storefronts, the peaceful coast and the one nice diner in a spooky island town on AppleTV. This is a town that has been compared to Pawnee from Parks & Rec by way of Stephen King, and the description is as apt as the town is very cursed but the people are quite kooky. Mayor Loftis, played by Matthew Rhys, is trying to wrangle the odder elements of the isolated community enough to turn it into a tourist destination in an effort to save the floundering town. However, despite his shaky skepticism, the forces of strange and scary are descending on the town like a fog, sometimes literally, and only the quirky loons like Stephen Root's Wyck know how to deal with it. The show is both funnier and scarier than the trailers hinted at, but do these qualities mesh into a solid watch? Listen to this pod and be forewarned!

Rating Out of 5 What the Actual Fuck Was This Brian: .01/5 Darryl: 1/5 Project Hail Mary (2026) Release Date: March 20, 2026 Runtime: 156 minutes Director: Phil Lord and Christopher Miller Writer: Drew Goddard Based On: Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir Studios: Lord Miller Productions, Pascal Pictures, Open Invite Films, and Waypoint Entertainment Distributor: Amazon MGM Studios (U.S. and Canada), Sony Pictures Releasing International (international) Summary: Ryland Grace wakes up alone aboard a spacecraft with no memory of who he is or why he is there, only to slowly realize he has been sent on a desperate mission to save Earth from an extinction-level threat. What starts as a survival mystery turns into a science-heavy, emotionally warm space adventure built around problem-solving, sacrifice, and an unexpected interstellar friendship. Main Cast: Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace Sandra Hüller as Eva Stratt James Ortiz as Rocky Lionel Boyce as Carl Milana Vayntrub as Olesya Ilyukhina Ken Leung as Yao Priya Kansara as Mary Bastian Antonio Fuentes as Parker Production Notes: The film was directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and adapted by Drew Goddard, who also wrote The Martian, giving this one a similar mix of hard-science problem solving, humor, and crowd-pleasing momentum. Production shot in the United Kingdom, with principal photography running from June through October 2024, centered at Shepperton Studios. The movie's cinematography was handled by Greig Fraser, with editing by Chris Dickens and Joel Negron, and music by Daniel Pemberton. One of the big talking points around the movie is how heavily it leans on practical filmmaking. Lord and Miller said the production avoided green screens on set, relying instead on built environments, controlled lighting, puppetry, and VFX enhancement later. Rocky was brought to life through a combination of puppetry, animatronics, and digital effects, with James Ortiz both performing and voicing the character. The approach clearly connected with audiences. The film opened to about $80.6 million domestic and roughly $141 million worldwide, making it Amazon MGM's biggest opening and the biggest opening weekend of 2026 so far. It was also produced at blockbuster scale, with reporting placing the budget around $200 million net.
