It's the final month of year, which means it's time again to celebrate the reason for the season and make it another DePalmber to ReMalmber as we fire up another Brian De Palma series, DePALMBER: PART DE, with 1987's The Untouchables, directed by De Palma, written by David Mamet, and starring Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, Andy Garcia, Charles Martin Smith, Robert De Niro, Billy Drago and Patricia Clarkson. A 1930s Chicago gangland drama about the prohibition war on Al Capone, it's a quintessential Dad Movie that found second life as a classic video store rental in the decade-plus after its release, and this week J Mo finally catches up with a movie that was the talk of the schoolyard some 25 years ago now. Plus: No trips to the theater to discuss this week, but we look to streaming for an in-depth report on the Taylor Swift / Travis Kelce fanfic Lifetime Original holiday film, Christmas In The Spotlight. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, The Untouchables is currently streaming on Paramount+ at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include Constantine, Sweethearts, When Harry Met Sally..., Kiss The Girls, Our Little Secret, Den of Thieves, Under Paris, Downtown Owl, Anthony Jeselnik: Bones and All, American Gangster, Dear Santa, Smile 2, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, Josie and the Pussycats, That Thing You Do!, Blow Out, Mission: Impossible, Air Bud, The Departed, Infernal Affairs, and The Naked Gun 33 & 1/3 among others. DePalmber: Part De continues next week with Brian in full erotic thriller mode as we check out 1984's Body Double, which unfortunately at present is not available to stream in Canada but can be rented on YouTube and Cineplex. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

"Once, there was this day... this one day when... everyone realized they needed each other."Thanksgiving is just around the corner, so The Wives Colangelo are discussing a rare festive film. Most people remember PIECES OF APRIL for the cover art of an alternative Katie Holmes with choppy bangs and box-dyed red hair, but few remember the micro-budget charm of a story about an estranged young woman attempting to host what might be the last holiday she ever has with her family before her mother passes from cancer. With an Oscar-nominated performance from Patricia Clarkson and a message of how family can go beyond your blood relatives, let PIECES OF APRIL be the warm hug you need ahead of what may be a tumultuous holiday season with your own family.BONUS: Poppa Colangelo stops by to tell a little family story! This season, I am focused on stories with negative or neutral character arcs. Sometimes, finding out what a character doesn't want is the first step to discovery. On the surface, Cathy Whitaker has a perfect life. However, it's a shallow life. Cathy's choices are symbolically represented by her husband, Frank, and her gardener, Raymond. The two male characters are interesting external representations of Cathy's internal choices. There's a small amount of exposition in Far From Heaven, but when it features, it's done straightforwardly and with simplicity. -M“The interesting events in Cathy's arc happen side by side in the movie. She shows an interest in Raymond at the same time, she discovers Frank with another man. While Cathy is trying to maintain one life, she's also growing in another part of her life.” - Melanie HillRelated Story Nerd EpisodesThe Accidental Tourist (Season 5, Episode 3) For access to writing templates and worksheets, and more than 70 hours of training (all for free), subscribe to Valerie's Inner Circle. To learn to read like a writer, visit Melanie's website.Follow Valerie on X, Instagram and Threads @valerie_francisFollow Melanie on X, Instagram and Facebook @MelanieHillAuthor

Going into the video rental shop and seeing a cover with one of your favorite actors and just taking a whim on a new film. That's exactly how I discovered Pieces of April from 2003. Starring Katie Holmes who we all loved from Dawson's Creek, and with Patricia Clarkson playing her mother it immediately caught my attention. With a shoe string budget the story and incredible acting takes such a simple story of family dynamics over a holiday weekend and it spins into such a great story and film to watch this season. Me and Mikey talk about our first time watch (we think?), being shocked this was the only time Patricia Clarkson was nominated for an Oscar, and talk all about how great 'baddie' Katie Holmes looks. Fancy dress, guns, Ennio Morricone music, and snappy dialogue bring us into the fictional non-fiction world of Elliot Ness and Al Capone. Powerhouse cast, powerhouse script, quotable from begin to end, and introducing Patricia Clarkson, can this movie do any wrong. Listen to find out. My guest is Emmy, Golden Globe and double Olivier Award winning actor, director, producer and writer, Brian Cox. In a wonderfully unguarded conversation, we talk Eugene O'Neill, Logan Roy & Succession, great examples of directing, acting with Gielgud, how to shape a character, how to run a rehearsal room, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and we end with a recitation of his favourite poem. Recorded in his dressing room at the Wyndham's Theatre in London while he was starring as James Tyrone opposite Patricia Clarkson in Jeremy Herrin's production of A Long Day's Journey Into Night.

"People thought I was a dirty skank? Fine. I'd be the dirtiest skank they've ever seen" We watched the 2010 teen film Easy A with our friend Evelyn. We truly used to be a proper country. When we used to get teen comedies like this in movie theaters, not just dropped on streaming platforms. Directed by Will Gluck and written by Bert V. Royal, Easy A helped catapult Emma Stone into massive stardom. Fourteen years and two best actress Oscars later Miss Stone might be the most beloved, and talented of her generation. And they say the modern movie star is dead! When Olive Penderghast lies to her best friend about losing her virginity to a college boy, the rumour mill catches on like wildfire, branding Olive as the school harlot. We discuss dated elements of the film that feel painfully 2010, Emma Stone's star is born performance, and the last screen credit for Amanda Bynes. And don't worry, we discuss Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci's unhinged performances as Olive's "cool" parents. Truly only Tom Cruise can judge us for our incedencies! Episode 080: Long Day's Journey into Night by Eugene O'Neill Host: Douglas Schatz Guest: Jeremy Herrin Welcome to The Play Podcast where we explore the greatest new and classic plays. Each episode we choose a single play to talk about in depth with our expert guest. We'll discuss the play's origins, its themes, characters, structure and impact. For us the play is the thing. Eugene O'Neill wrote his autobiographical magnum opus, Long Day's Journey into Night, in 1941, but because of the personal revelations it contained he gave explicit instructions that it was not to be published until 25 years after his death and that it should never be staged. In the event his widow allowed both to occur in 1956, only three years after his death, when the play won O'Neill his fourth Pulitzer prize. As we record this episode, a powerful new production of the play is playing in London, with Brian Cox and Patricia Clarkson heading the cast. I am delighted and privileged to talk with the production's director, Jeremy Herrin, about O'Neill's monumental play.
The Losers close out April with another trip to prom with Carrie White, only this time there's no Brian De Palma, no Sissy Spacek, and no Amy Irving. Instead, they dial back to 2002, when NBC aired a new vision of Carrie that may or may not have been the backdoor pilot for a would-be TV series. Together they discuss Bryan Fuller's vision, the early aughts aesthetics, the garish CGI, Angela Bettis and Patricia Clarkson's performances, how it hews closer to the page, and more. For as long as I've been a devotee of cinema, I've followed the career of Patricia Clarkson. Patricia is a genuine queen of the screen, featuring in films like The Station Agent, Far From Heaven, The Green Mile, and Pieces of April, for which she received an Academy Award nomination. Her latest films is the magnificent drama film Monica, featuring Trace Lysette (Transparent, Hustlers) who plays the titular character, a trans woman who poses as a support worker to visit her dying mother, Eugenia (Patricia Clarkson). Due to Eugenia's abusive nature, Monica left the family years ago, only to be drawn back into the fold by her sister-in-law, Laura (Emily Browning), to make amends with her mother.Unresolved trauma hovers under the surface of Monica's exterior, with Trace Lysette delivering a performance that stuns with its authenticity and complexity, and when she shares the screen with Patricia Clarkson, the film truly soars. Director Andrea Pallaoro, alongside co-writer Orlando Tirado, has crafted a masterful trans narrative which was part of a landmark year of LGBTIQA+ cinema in 2023.In the above interview, Patricia talks about her work throughout the years, the importance of celebrating and championing queer voices, and the joy of working alongside Trace Lysette.Monica screens at the upcoming Mardis Gras Queer Screen festival, running in cinemas in Sydney from 15-29 February 2024, with select films heading online for on demand screenings across Australia from 1-11 March 2024. Tickets can be purchased at QueerScreen.com.au. The festival features an array of panel discussions including chats about Queer Tropes and Trauma on Screen, Films That Made You Feel Seen, and more, alongside a wide array of features, documentaries, and short films, including All of Us Strangers, Mutt, The Missing, Isla's Way, The People's Joker, Kokomo City, a celebration of the work of John Waters with a screening of Female Trouble, and even a sing-along of The Sound of Music. In their first episode of 2024, Madeline, Julian and Emilio disembark, hand over their firearms, and investigate Martin Scorsese's 2010 film 'Shutter Island'. In the third of five episodes considering "perceptions of sanity," the trio consider its place among other well known films with twist endings. Is this Scorsese's attempt to beat M. Night Shyamalan at his own game? How much of what we see is actually happening? Who is the real "monster" in this film? Should some of these nurses and orderlies consider side hustles as working actors? Did Emilio actually find a scenario where clever wordplay just didn't do it for him? The three also try their hand at a new segment called 'Unlikely Shared Universe', where they test the limits of their imagination and movie nerd brains to keep characters repopulating the movies they love, only with new aliases and identities.

Any film that includes Patricia Clarkson in its cast has the cinematic equivalent of the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. She is that good, that committed, that versatile. Her credits run the gamut from well-loved indies like Lars and the Real Girl, The Station Agent and Dogville to mainstream hits like The Untouchables and TV series, including Six Feet Under, which earned her two Emmy Awards. Her latest release is Monica, about a transgender woman coming to terms with her dying mother. Leonard and Jessie had a ball talking with an actress who loves what she does and has an unquenchable zest for life.
Celebrated for bringing depth and nuance to roles ranging from a drug-addicted art dealer (High Art, Lisa Cholodenko, 1998), to a dying mother meeting her daughter for the first time (Monica, Andrea Pallaoro, 2023), Patricia Clarkson is no stranger to complex emotional terrain. Perhaps that is why she feels somewhat comfortable in the volatile world of A Woman Under the Influence, John Cassavettes' 1974 masterpiece. The film centers around Mabel Longhetti, brilliantly rendered by Gena Rowlands, as a deeply loving, profoundly unstable housewife and mother of three. We explore the extraordinary power and nuance of Rowland's performance, the layered collaboration of Cassavettes, Rowlands, and Falk, and learn the extent to which the film was indeed a family affair. For this iconic film, we could not ask for a better guide than the woman Cooper once dubbed the “Unofficial Queen of Sundance”, Patricia Clarkson. Hosted on Acast. When a Promise Meant Something: Sean Penn's The Pledge November is the month of Rick Ramos and this week we continue - following Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon and Walter Hill's Hard Times - with a look at Sean Penn's 2001 The Pledge. Featuring an underrated (and I would argue tragically underseen) Jack Nicholson performance that sidesteps all of the Nicholson tropes that we have become used to, Nicholson portrays Jerry Black, a police detective on the eve of his retirement who leaves his retirement party to investigate a young girl's rape and murder. He is quickly sucked into the horror of the crime and finds himself obsessed with discovering the truth and bringing the killer to justice. Penn's film takes all of the labored and tired tropes that have become standard for the genre and manipulates them in ways that make for a fresh directorial take. Featuring an all-star cast (that never screams of stunt casting) including: Sam Shepard, Helen Mirren, Aaron Eckhart, Patricia Clarkson, Michael O'Keefe, Vanessa Redgrave, Robin Wright Penn, Harry Dean Stanton, Benicio del Toro, Tom Noonan, and (an incredible) Mickey Rourke, the 2001 film is one that truly speaks to Penn's power and gifts behind the camera. #Monica is a film worthy of an Oscar nomination, and I recently interviewed Eleonora Granata-Jenkinson, producer, and Andrea Pallaoro, director, about the making of this this beautiful movie. Monica is played Trace Lysette and Patricia Clarkson stars as her mother. The film is about a trans woman who was driven out of her home decades earlier because her family would not accept her life choice. But Monica returns to care for her ailing mother, and the humanity and emotions that evolve throughout this film are nothing short of extraordinary. Here's a clip from our interview with Eleonora and Andrea, representing Italian-American filmmaking at its finest. They talk about making this movie, and the choices made to depict the story with such beauty. Monica is also getting Oscar nods, and the team will be fundraising to raise money for an Oscar campaign, and we also talked about that during our interview. Please find our full conversation with Eleonora and Andrea on all video and audio platforms of #LittleItalyPodcast, #LittleItalyOfLAPodcast, and #DeborahKobyltLIVE, and invite your friends, too. I'm your host, #DeborahZaraKobylt, and I'm honored to have you joining us

Leaping from Algiers, Louisiana to the Broadway stage and, ultimately, the top-tier of Hollywood, is no simple feat. In Patricia Clarkson's case, it required a daring jump from her native New Orleans to Fordham University, and the fortuitous, essential mentorship of actress Debra Monk. But Clarkson never truly left the South behind, and in fact she relishes her upbringing there, recalling it fondly—especially her mother's Creole cooking. On this week's episode of Table for Two, the Golden Globe Award-winner sits down with host Bruce Bozzi to reflect on her early roles in The House of Blue Leaves and The Untouchables, her adoration of actress and singer Jennifer Holliday, and the values she's gained by growing up the youngest of five sisters. Peter Dinklage has won multiple Emmy awards for playing the iconic character Tyrion Lannister on HBO's "Game of Thrones" in a role that helped him become an international superstar. However roughly eight years before that show first went on the air, he had his first true breakout role playing the more unassuming Finbar McBride in this relatively unassuming comedy/drama directed by Tom McCarthy. McCarthy would also go on to bigger things as he would eventually direct the Best Picture-winning Spotlight in 2015. Together they collaborated here on a bittersweet story of a quiet loner who finds that despite his best efforts to keep to himself and JUST study and watch trains, he can't help but meet interesting new people. Playing the various new people whom Finn befriends are Patricia Clarkson, Bobby Cannavale (in one of HIS early breakout roles), and Michelle Williams. On the surface, this is very much a movie about trains but UNDER the surface? Let's find out....Host: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
