June is recognized in the US as Caribbean-American Heritage Month. So what better time to say Sante! or Cheers! to recognize the important achievements of researchers working to support members of the Caribbean community. We speak with Dr. Dorothie Durosier Mertilus about how important it is it literally be able to speak someone's language; in her case French or Haitian Creole. We hear from from Dr. Clement Gwede, the scientist whose lab is out in the community. Coming at gaps in care from different angles means that patients can be supported in meaningful ways, to offer them the best outcomes. Send us a text message and tell us your thoughts.Caribbean American Heritage Month invites us to explore the rich tapestry of identities that shape our diaspora experience. In this episode, we uncover the fascinating yet often overlooked story of "The Merikins" – formerly enslaved Black people who joined British forces during the War of 1812 and later established thriving communities in southern Trinidad. After gaining their freedom through military service, these remarkable individuals received land grants from the British in 1815-1816. In Trinidad, they built productive agricultural settlements, but their contribution extends far beyond farming. They maintained powerful cultural and religious traditions that are still recognized today. Discover more about this remarkable chapter in Caribbean history with us. Her company was established in 2018 and they offer commercial and residential cleaning, as well as, a cleaning product line named K-Sol.Keadian tells us how the pandemic brought forth the idea that allowed her to bottle her own chemical-free, non-toxic cleaning products. This new venture makes her company one of the only black-owned cleaning product lines in the United States. K-Sol products can be found through her website and on Amazon, and she has hopes of getting into large scale wholesaling in the near future. Of all her products, she says that the Mango Coconut scent has been a huge hit with her Caribbean audience. In this episode we talk about the success and awards Keadian has achieved, as well as, the challenges of migration, racism and entrepreneurship she has had to overcome.Keadian also gives advice to entrepreneurs on how they too can move past the difficulties and succeed. Visit carryonfriends.com to read more. Make Connections:Connect with Keadian: Instagram | Website |  Klean n' JiffyConnect with @carryonfriends - Twitter | Instagram | FacebookTalk Back:Please provide your thoughts about Caribbean American Heritage Month by completing this anonymous survey. Support the show

Since they're still denying that truth, Rep. Plaskett explains how things have changed on the hill between colleagues. She also discusses her legislation, H.R. 3434, which provides equity to people living in the territories, specifically seeking health insurance and Medicaid.
