On today's show, we chat with Melody Noel! For Melody Noel, music is a life force. Born into a family of mariachis spanning across seven generations — with the earliest musician dating back to the 1870s — Melody forged her own path as the first to create music outside the Mexican folk genre. Melody began her journey in pop music as a member of teen girl group Runway MMC. This experience opened her eyes to the American music scene, working with the likes of Grammy nominated Alex Cantrall (“Leave (Get Out)” by JoJo) and Brandon Howard (“I Ain't Gotta Tell You” by Ne-Yo) for Runway MMC's debut EP “Forever Yours” (2008). Melody pursued higher education at NYU's Clive Davis School of Recorded Music, graduating in 2014. Her class project, an EP titled “The Living Room Sessions,” sparked the interest of music publisher Imagem Music; they signed her soon after in 2012.She continued her path as a songsmith in Los Angeles, toplining for songs such as “IDon't Wanna Love You” (Casablanca Records/UMG) by Prince Fox, “In My Head (feat.Georgia Ku)” (Mad Decent) by Party Favor, and “Paper Roses” (Spinnin' Records) by Kura. In 2016, she co-wrote the single “Love Make the World Go Round” recorded by Jennifer Lopez and Lin Manuel Miranda. Released exclusively on iTunes, all proceeds were donated to those affected by the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, FL. The song peaked at no. 72 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and no. 9 on the Digital Songs chart. After feeling the pull to write songs for something bigger than herself, Melody pivoted to the Christian music genre, establishing Influence Music in 2017. In 2018, Melody led the worship collective in creating iTunes no. 1 and Billboard no. 2 album “Touching Heaven.” Melody's single “Mistakes” made it on Billboard's Christian Airplay chart for 20weeks. She continues writing and performing songs that are utilized by churches globally. To date, Melody's songs have been streamed 228 million times across DSPs. Whether writing music for pop icons, film and television or for local congregants, the banner Melody carries over it all is "Soli Deo gloria,” meaning “Glory to God alone. With the release of “Back to Praise” via Influence Music (distr. via Capitol Christian Music Group), Melody is stepping out in faith to accomplish such a mission. This EP consists of five pop-infused worship songs that remind believers that no matter what life brings, God is good, and our response is to keep coming “Back to Praise.” melodynoelmusic.com@melodynoelmusicchristianmusicguys.com@christianmusicguys

[SEGMENT 2-1] Observations Israel is at war with Iran; and who knows what happens next in that conflict All I know is Iran is in deep kimche, because supposedly Israel knocked out most of their defense systems. We are still sending money to Ukraine, but we have no updates on progress. The world is a mess. Have you seen the video where Trudeau sits down at a table, and China's president is looking at his phone and won't acknowledge him. The president of Brazil ignores him, as he tries to shake his hand. Mitch McConnell is stepping down. Did you see him fall on a stage recently. He looks as bad as Biden Laura Loomer says the RINOs in the Senate want somebody who will do what McConnell did and work against Trump… [SEGMENT 2-2] Trump the Central Park Five and OJ I asked this question a while back, “What if Nicole Simpson were white?” Here's another question, “What if OJ were white? If Nicole Brown-Simpson had been Black instead of white, the O.J. Simpson case would likely have been perceived very differently, both in the media and within American society. Speculating on this hypothetical scenario, there are a few key aspects that would shape how the trial might have unfolded in terms of public sentiment and racial dynamics.Racial Dynamics and Public Perception: The original O.J. Simpson case was already racially charged, as many Black Americans viewed Simpson as a symbol of triumph over systemic racism in the justice system, while many white Americans saw the trial as a clear case of guilt obscured by racial tension. Had Nicole been Black, the racial polarization may have shifted. Black and white communities might not have been as divided over Simpson's guilt or innocence, as the racial dimension that fueled such passionate reactions may not have existed in the same way.Media Coverage: The media played a significant role in shaping how the O.J. Simpson trial was perceived. Nicole Brown-Simpson's whiteness was central to how the case was framed, amplifying the notion of a Black man allegedly murdering a white woman, a narrative historically loaded with racialized fears and stereotypes. If Nicole were Black, the media may not have sensationalized the trial in the same way. The case might not have received the same level of attention, or the racial undertones would likely be different, potentially focusing more on issues within the Black community rather than interracial tensions.Race and Justice System Critique: The case spotlighted deep mistrust between Black Americans and the criminal justice system, with many believing Simpson was being unfairly targeted due to his race. If Nicole were Black, this critique of the system may have been less pronounced, as the racial dimension that fueled the "us vs. them" narrative might not have been as intense. The focus may have been more on domestic violence or celebrity culture than systemic racism.Historical Precedent: Historically, cases involving Black victims of crime, especially when committed by fellow Black individuals, have received less attention from the media and the public. It's possible that if Nicole had been Black, the case might not have reached the fever pitch of public interest that it did. Similarly, the reactions from both the defense and prosecution may have played out in a less racially charged environment. Some commentators and researchers have speculated on these hypothetical changes to the Simpson trial. For instance, in various discussions of race and media, analysts point to how white women victims often receive more sympathetic media portrayals and heightened public interest. This dynamic might have been different if Nicole had been Black, perhaps leading to less of a "racial trial of the century" moment and more of a celebrity-focused or gendered case. However, no significant academic work has tackled this exact hypothetical in depth. Still, the role of race in the justice system and media perceptions has been explored widely in other contexts. Authors like Patricia J. Williams and Ta-Nehisi Coates have written about how race impacts the narrative around criminal cases, especially when it involves white female victims and Black male defendants. This thought experiment is an extension of how deeply ingrained racial dynamics in America influence the interpretation of high-profile legal cases, especially those involving interracial conflict or violence. Speculating on how the O.J. Simpson case would have unfolded if O.J. were white instead of Black introduces a fascinating exploration of race, celebrity, and the justice system. If Simpson had been white, several key aspects of the trial would likely have been dramatically different, particularly in how the media, the public, and the jury approached the case. 1. Public Perception and Racial Polarization One of the most defining features of the O.J. Simpson trial was the racial divide in how it was perceived. Black Americans largely viewed Simpson as a victim of systemic racism, while many white Americans saw it as a clear-cut case of guilt. If Simpson were white, this polarization may not have existed in the same way. The trial might have been less about race and more about the intersection of celebrity culture and domestic violence. Without the racial dimension, it is likely that Black communities wouldn't have rallied behind Simpson in the same way, and white Americans would not have perceived the trial as an example of a flawed justice system letting a guilty man go free based on racial issues. 2. Media Sensationalism The media played a huge role in portraying the case as a battle between racial justice and privilege. The dynamic of a famous Black man allegedly murdering his white ex-wife was key to the media frenzy. Had Simpson been white, the racial implications wouldn't have driven the narrative. Instead, the media might have focused more on Simpson's status as a celebrity or the brutal nature of the crime. Celebrity trials often attract media attention, but the racial tension added fuel to the fire in this case. Without it, the trial would likely have still been highly publicized, but the sensationalism would have centered on Simpson's fame and wealth rather than his race. 3. The Jury's Decision The racial composition of the jury was another critical element of the O.J. Simpson trial. In the actual case, the jury was predominantly Black, and race played a significant role in how they viewed the trial. If Simpson had been white, the jury's racial makeup would not have had the same implications, and the dynamics of the trial might have focused more on gender issues, such as domestic violence, rather than race. The defense's strategy, which leaned heavily on accusations of racism within the LAPD, particularly regarding Mark Fuhrman's testimony, would not have been as effective if Simpson were white. The defense might have been forced to focus more on evidence manipulation or police incompetence rather than race-based arguments, which could have led to a different outcome. 4. Race and the Justice System The O.J. Simpson trial came at a time when racial tensions in America, particularly between Black communities and the police, were at a boiling point. Just a few years after the Rodney King beating and the L.A. riots, the trial tapped into deep-seated frustrations within the Black community regarding police brutality and systemic racism. If Simpson had been white, it is possible that the case would not have become such a lightning rod for conversations about race in America. Speculation and Commentary There has been some commentary regarding how the case might have been different if O.J. Simpson were white. Though no large academic pieces tackle this hypothetical directly, some legal analysts and social commentators have suggested that the racial dynamics significantly influenced how the public, media, and legal teams approached the trial. If Simpson were white, the media focus would have likely shifted to Simpson's celebrity status, wealth, and fame, without the same focus on systemic racism or police misconduct. While it's difficult to point to specific sources that deeply speculate on this hypothetical, there have been discussions in broader analyses of the case that recognize the pivotal role race played in shaping the outcome and the broader narrative around the trial. Conclusion Had O.J. Simpson been white, the trial would likely have been less about racial injustice and more about celebrity privilege or domestic violence. The media would have framed the story differently, and the defense would not have been able to rely on accusations of systemic racism to the same extent. Without the racial polarization, the outcome of the trial might have shifted, and the case wouldn't have become the cultural phenomenon it was. The O.J. Simpson trial, as we know it, is inseparable from the racial tensions that defined it. [SEGMENT 2-3] Crime stats 1 The EXPERTS reported that crime went down under Biden. Down SIGNIFICANTLY. This week, we head back to '82 (when we could throw a pigskin a quarter mile) with special guest Jackson Reed. With his band Jackson Reed and the Silverbirds, the 26-year old Calgary rocker is mixing an irresistible blend of earnest '80s classic rock with modern pop smarts. Following the success of tracks like 2021's "Dangerous Lover" (featuring legendary drummer Kenny Aronoff) and 2023's "In My Head," their latest single is a cover of Prince's iconic 1982 hit "Little Red Corvette", offering up a take on the classic that's both faithful and fresh. It's garnered radio airplay coast-to-coast in both the USA and Canada. Reed also hosts the wonderful podcast Guess That Record, where he has interviewed luminaries such as The Police's Andy Summers, Dweezil Zappa, and Billy Joel drummer Chuck Burgi. And, in tribute to Jackson's pod, we play a brand new O3L game called "Back in 82, I Could Guess That Song!" Like good honorary Canadians, we partake in conversations about hockey, Rush, the Tragically Hip, Degrassi, Corner Gas...plus little red corvettes, Brett's drag club appearance, and Uncle Gregg's oddly specific sensual fantasies. Hey, it was Saturday night, we guess that makes it alright... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Marianne Eloise has had the same Fall Out Boy song stuck in her head for over three years. "It's Hard to Say 'I Do,' When I Don't," an relatively obscure cut from the band's 2007 album Infinity on High has taken up permanent residence in her brain as the ultimate earworm. Everybody has had a riff or a melody stuck in their head, but not at this . Eloise, a journalist and music writer, decided to turn her malady into a story. Her pursuit of the science behind "stuck songs" led her to our unique bureau of forensic musicology. On this episode of Switched on Pop, Charlie and Nate talk about earworms: what they are, why are they so catchy, and how we might get rid of them. Then, Nate confronts his own stuck song: The Lemon Twigs's "In My Head," and in talking to the two brothers behind the group, finds a novel approach to giving an unwanted musical guest the boot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIszb9nh3r4https://open.spotify.com/artist/64kjTvGmTTpYpoSX0uNJ6QRapper Jesse Medina continues to pour his heart and soul into his music, putting out hard-hitting tracks. The most recent is “No Ma'am” off an upcoming EP titled Extrasensory Modes ofPerception.“No Ma'am” features Medina's boy Q-Timer, who he has been playing music with for years. They wrote the song together and put it to a beat by producer Barry Bones, who they bothworked with on Medina's recent track “In My Head.”While his first single was more about using trippy poetry describing the world of drug psychosis, this one is a little more fun and playful with a focus on “chillin' with his homies.”“We went over to Barry's lab and did it over his beat,” Medina said. “It was based off the show‘Married With Children' and Al Bundy's little crew of homies. You know, it's about looking out foryour bro, having guy time and just kind of talking shit.”Medina admits there is some randomness to the song, and he and Q-Timer are just “spittin'.”The inspiration for the bars kind of just came out of thin air.“It's really about the brotherhood,” Medina said. “It is kind of the camaraderie between me andQ-Timer. It's about sticking with your boys. You know, there are people in relationships, but youcan go out and kick it with your homies. I like the word play and like the beat a lot, and the hookis hella dope to me. That kind of sums it up.”Medina said the bars and the beat carry the lyrical flow. The beat has an element of intrigue to itbefore the lyrics kick in.Here they comeAll my gunsMy day onesLike when you see me runThe story behind the beat is an interesting one. Jesse said there was initially another beat that“No Ma'am” was written to. Somehow it went missing, and no matter how hard they looked, theysimply couldn't find it. Sometimes that is just the way things go, and resiliency is key. While itthrew them off at first, Medina, Q-Timer and Barry Bones started from square one and put outsomething to be proud of.“Q found this beat and it was sounding hard,” Jesse said. “When I heard it, I knew it was a hellasick beat. I love it, man. It's beyond what I wanted it to be. This beat changed the delivery andmade it something else.”He has heard solid feedback from his fans about his last track, “In My Head,” and with “NoMa'am” that praise has only continued and increased. He said this is one for the friends andfans alike.“This is for the hip-hop heads.”Extrasensory Modes of Perception has nine tracks and will be released next month. It is a mix ofdifferent styles of hip-hop. Jesse said it is beyond labeling in a genre. Each track differs from thenext and will keep the listeners on their toes and on the edge of their seats in anticipation. Whilethere is a sense of randomness, he said there is also a method to the madness.“If I hear something in my head, I'm just going to execute it, and there's no telling what kind ofmusic will come from it,” he said. “I'm looking at the challenge and having fun with it every time. But there is a theme — you can hear the hip-hop influences no matter what song it is.”Jesse was born and raised in San Jose, and music is simply a massive part of his life. When hehears music, lyrics will just flow through him, but sometimes he takes his time to make sureeverything is perfect. Medina thrives off using straight emotion with the beat.He has influences that date back to music his mother would play like Prince, Rick James andthe Isley Brothers. Some of his current inspirations include groups like the Gorillaz, FreestyleFellowship, TDE, Gnarls Barkley, Deftones, Chelsea Grin and Portishead. When he was just 10 years old, he started writing music. Through life experiences and hisinspirations, he has been able to create his own personal sound and touch.Jesse is always working. His current projects are a three-song EP, called This Way Westward,as well as an EP with unreleased songs called Nostalgia Nuggets.“No Ma'am” is available on all platforms, and Extrasensory Modes of Perception is scheduledfor an August 3 release.Be sure to follow Jesse Medina's musical journey on all platforms.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/creator-to-creators-with-meosha-bean--4460322/support.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Taylor Acorn over Zoom video.Nashville based singer/songwriter, Taylor Acorn, is gearing up for her FIRST EVER tour supporting Real Friends. The tour will be visiting over 25 cities across North America including stops in Toronto,ON, Philadelphia, PA, New York, NY, Pomona, CA and more before wrapping on Tuesday, November 1st in Minneapolis, MN at The Garage. In August, Taylor shared her latest single, “Psycho,” an empowering pop rock anthem about taking your power back from a partner that has been gaslighting you and turning into the “bad guy” they think you are.Growing up in the early 90's & 2000's pop punk/ pop rock scene, for Taylor Acorn it was never a phase. Hailing from the small North Central Pennsylvania town of Wellsboro, Taylor had always dreamed of a career in music and in 2014, dropped out of Kutztown University to pursue just that, setting her sights for Nashville in 2017.She first left her mark in the country music world with her 2017 single “Put It In a Song” followed up by an EP she wrote solely on her own, which now garners nearly 50 Million streams, releasing several singles to follow. However, she never felt at home creating country music and in the midst of the 2020 pandemic went back to her pop punk roots with her cover of “Jamie All Over” on TikTok, sparking the attention of many elder emo fans as well as Mayday Parade themselves.Since then, she has gained the attention of many emo/pop punk bands with her newly rendered versions of their songs. Covers aren't the only thing that's been grasping the attention of fans though. With her infectiously relatable releases of “Do That Again”, “In My Head” and “Shapeshifting”, Taylor is now leaving her own footprint in the pop punk community giving her fans a place to feel safe and to feel heard, by tackling tough subjects such as mental health by sharing her own personal struggles. She wants to give her listeners a space where they can feel free and vulnerable, a place where healing is accepted no matter who you are or where you've come from.We want to hear from you! Tyler got to hang out with an artist that has been on his radar for quite a few months now. Her name is Taylor Acorn. You may have heard of her after her most recent releases “Shapeshifting”, another single called “In My Head” and her recent acoustic cover of blink-182's “First Date”. After we released one of our recent episodes called: Pop-punk NEEDS to invade the Country Music world, Tyler feels like Taylor is the perfect follow-up to that episode. Because he feels like Taylor is definitely an artist that can play nice in the pop-punk world AND the country music world ALL at the same time. She comes from a country music background, but she's doing her thing in the pop-punk world and she is doing it VERY well. But they discuss just that and whether or not she thinks she can play in both genres. They also talk about her very beginnings, when we can expect a new single and then she dishes on a tour she'll be in support of that you don't want to miss! When it comes to Taylor Acorn, Tyler REALLY expects big things from her and we're excited for everyone to hear her story.Support the show
