Thomas, affectionately known as "Dr. A", is the teen mom turned doctor who helps women "SOAR" by teaching them how to apply the life-changing methods of mindset, resilience, and action to Slay Odds & Achieve Results! As a teen mother turned doctor, Dr. A certainly had the odds stacked against her. Raised in the crime-ridden streets of Detroit, her family was turned upside down at age 13 when her parents divorced and days later her mother was shot five times in her stomach by a hitman – and survived! Adding to the family turmoil, just three years after the shooting, Dr. A gave birth to her son while still in high school. Despite it all, she went on to earn three degrees and six figures before the age of 30, all while raising her son and working full-time! She later earned her fourth degree, a doctorate in just 2.5 years! She didn't just beat the odds, she crushed them! "Dr. A", has sustained success in her career as a healthcare executive and university professor. Her established career spanning over 20 years has led to national and international awards, presentations, and academic publications. As a Christian woman, wife, and mother, she dedicates much of her personal time to her family and to ministry in her local church, where she serves as Vice President of the Board of Directors, Women's Ministry Director, and Director of Education.

When Marc Trice went to prison, Beanie Babies were hip, Whitney Houston sang “I Will Always Love You” and “internet” was not a household word. He was 15 years old and had never held a job. When Trice was released 21 years later, he had to learn how to negotiate the new century as a man in his mid-30s with a felony on his record. And the family of Trice's murder victim, Sandra Lee Raph, had to learn to live with the knowledge that he was now free. We listen back to a conversation with Marc Trice, and Angela Thomas, the sister of his victim.
Welcome to Black Cancer, a podcast about the nuances of our lives as people of color told through our cancer journeys. I'm your host, Jodi-Ann Burey. And talk about nuances. Our guest on today's episode is Angela Thomas, a nurse, mother and woman of faith who laced up her gloves and kicked cancer in the ass. What I love about being a person of color is our rich tradition of storytelling. It's alive in our communities and most importantly, keeps our communities alive. Angela's storytelling grounds us in the value of time. We interrogate the notion of “leaving everything up to God” and how that works alongside using her faith, we talk about her path to diagnosis, the actual logistics of preparing for the worst, learning to say no, our hair, our dreams, and so much. So much more. You're in for a treat until the very end. Before we get started, just a heads up. This was recorded in Decemeber 2020 a time when we were both still really impacted by Dr. Susan Moore's experience battling COVID-19. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jodi-ann-burey/message
