We have speakers and occasionally performers sharing conscious words. It came about 11 years ago when we noticed younger people didn't seem to know much about Dr. King, his accomplishments, and movements that he led. We wanted something right in the community that was free to attendees. It was not meant to replace anything but to be in addition to. It was also an opportunity to introduce some to our Dr. King statue. We are blessed to not only have a larger than life size statue and to have a street named after Dr. King but we have the statue on the street. That is rare. Even rarer is to have Coretta Scott King Roses. Thanks to the suggestion by Franklyn G. This week allegations of sexual harassment against another democratic elected official have been made.  The range is from freshmen congressmen, a former comedian to the dean of Congress.  There has been a major awareness initiative called #MeToo that has acted as a wave over the country.  Many entertainers and business leaders have stepped down or have been fired.  Matt Lauer was fired Tuesday.  Prior to him it was Bill O’Reilly and others in the news media.  It seems to be a low tolerance for it in the business and entertainment world but not so much in the political arena.  In spite of calls for resignations most are still there from the President to the latest Congressperson. Are politicians serious when they call for another to resign or maybe it’s just political cover?  It seems that our moral compass is rolling back due to political tribalism that has run a muck!  Is this really a big moment for sexual harassment victims or is Sexual Harassment becoming Trivialized? A Veteran suggested that he kneel as a sign of respect so he began kneeling on one knee. Many tried to make it about not having the right to protest.  They were reintroduced to the 1st Amendment.  They said they didn’t have the right to do it on the job because the 1st Amendment didn’t cover them in the work place so they were shown the NFL contract that did not require them to stand.  Some said that it disrespected the flag as the flag and National anthem required them to stand.  The United Stated Codes were shown where no such requirement existed.  Next it was that they were showing dishonor to the troops.  Military organizations came out and explained that the troops fight and die to up hold the constitution. Now it is that there is a time and place but when is that time and place other than the fictional place in their minds of neverwherey? Press #1 to speak    Dear Mr. President and the 1st Amendment!” Many of you may have heard of the flag protest controversy with the National Football League’s Colin Kaepernick.  Our president has once again weighed in and in a big way.  Not only did he tell fans to walk out if a player protested the National Anthem but later used vulgar language saying, “get that Son of a Bit_ch off of the field right now, out, he’s fired!” The protest started due to the treatment of African Americans at the hands of police throughout the nation.   This is on top of what the president said after Charlottesville.  For those remarks Republican Senator Bob Corker rebuked the president by saying, “the president has not yet been able to demonstrate the stability nor some of the competence that he needs to demonstrate in order to e successful.”  NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell commented after president’s Trumps latest remarks at a campaign rally in Alabama.  “The president failed to understand how the league and its players work to together to create a sense of unity in our country and in our culture. It does make me wonder if the president doesn’t know that we have a 1st amendment in our constitution and that one purpose for it is to prevent Tyranny by backing it up with the 2nd amendment…what would you say to our president if you had a chance to sit down and have a one on one with him?

It is a belief I believe that was in the authors and signers of the United States Constitution.  It is something many have believed at the formation of this country and most practiced until relatively recent times.  It puts governmental power into the hands of the people and takes it away from the wealthy, the powerful, oligarchs and monarchs.  As long as the people believe they are the government and have the power of government then our democracy is strong and will function properly as well as move us all upwards and forwards. It is frequently based in place and so is local, although it can also represent a community of common interest, purpose or practice. It can be individual or group leadership, voluntary or paid. In many localities it is provided by a combination of local volunteers, business and government and is best served by what is called "place management", ie. a combination within a region of Government resources, professional and business skills and the energies of the local community [Sorenson & Epps, 1996:115-117; Osborne & Gaebler, 1993]  A community leader is someone who is perceived to represent the community’s interests and plays the role of protecting them. This role could be paid for or voluntarily, most communities have held this role as a voluntary one.  Community leaders have a vast range of roles that range from mobilizing communities for a common cause to designing courses of action to overcome common challenges.  For more info, click here:  http://www.ktnetafrica.net/blog/ten-top-qualities-great-community-leaders-moses-tetui If you have a question, comment or just want to listen, give us a call (347) 826-9600. He was the only Black book store owner in the state for a while. He got more Black people on fire department than any other locally. He is the man I admired more than any other I met. This in no way is all that Mr. Smith accomplished during his time with us but merely a snapshot.  We affectionately referred to him as, The Mayor of the Bistro and the Oracle of Las Vegas. When I think of things I have done inspired by him and what wouldn’t have happened in my life had he not been in it, I see such a void. My life is fuller because of him and the community has been enriched by him through me. He said, “we should always be excellent.” When I am in the community my goal was to be excellent so they could see his excellence in me. It was a way to show a living respect to him and also for his approval. I admired him and wanted his approval probably more than any other man I have known. A very close military buddy asked, “Who is Sam Smith?”  I simply said, “He was the man I would have wanted to call me son.”   Our Own Voices Live is a radio show featuring people and stories from our community in Las Vegas, the surrounding area and some place near you. Powers given to enforce the act were initially weak, but were supplemented during later years. Congress asserted its authority to legislate under several different parts of the United States Constitution, principally its power to regulate interstate commerce under Article One (section 8), its duty to guarantee all citizens equal protection of the laws under the Fourteenth Amendment and its duty to protect voting rights under the Fifteenth Amendment. After initial unwillingness to comply, all 50 states adopted the change within a few years. On Memorial Day, the flag of the United States is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only until noon.  It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day. The half-staff position remembers the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon, their memory is raised by the livings, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all.For more information, click here:  http://www.pbs.org/national-memorial-day-concert/memorial-day/meaning/

Every year on 25 March, the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade offers the opportunity to honour and remember those who suffered and died at the hands of the brutal slavery system. The International Day also aims to raise awareness about the dangers of racism and prejudice today. Press #1 to speak    Democratic Rebellion but where are the Black People The Democratic Party seemed split during the presidential primary between Secretary Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders.  Small factions have begun to organize and execute actions to reshape and in some cases to take over the Democratic Party.  Not only is this happening locally but in states throughout the country.  Many are establishing intrastate networks.  As I have attended some of these meetings locally the first thing that I notice is the absence of Black people.  Usually I am the only one there or maybe one other.    If you have a question, comment or just want to listen, give us a call: (347) 826-9600. Press #1 to speak    Abolishment of Slavery from the 13th Amendment How many of you know that slavery was not completely abolished with the passage of the 13th Amendment that was supposed to abolish slavery?  Here is how it reads, “Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. Section 2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation. So, as you see, there is a form of slavery that is still legal in America.  How does it impact the present and Isn’t it time for it to truly be a thing of the past? Let’s discuss this.   If you have a question, comment or just want to listen, give us a call: (347) 826-9600. Press #1 to speak    African American History Quiz #1 During this era marriages among African Americans increased dramatically and why?   Black History Month Feb is African American History Month or Black History Month.  What does that mean to you?  I even hear some people who say we no longer need it.   The Black Agenda Each year I like to discuss the Black Agenda since it is the one month where we can openly talk about 100% Black stuff.  This year is no difference so we are going to discuss what our agenda should be and especially in the era of President Donald Trump!  Unity Often we speak of unity and how, “if we could only come together.”  This is usually said around a group of Black people from 3 people or a room full.  It seems to me that at those moments, we are together.  How about joining or collaborating to build and increase capacity?  Now that would be positive progress…!    If you have a question, comment or just want to listen, give us a call: (347) 826-9600.
