In this episode, our last with Sonya Ryan (our dear friend; mother of Carly Ryan; and founder/CEO of the Carly Ryan Foundation), we reflect on her daughter’s lasting legacy. We are so appreciative of Sonya, for her patience and time as we have navigated this entire series. We hope many are encouraged to follow Sonya's lead and live by her mantra: "Love is THE most Powerful Force in the Universe”. Sonya teaches by example, emboldening others to work collectively in awareness and determination to see these predatory behaviors interrupted and brought to justice. We are so thankful for these types of collaborations that not only bring attention to this urgent fight but also impart crucial critical thinking skills, emotional intelligence, and resilience to children, in the hope that they might better navigate a world of uncertainty.

In 2006 Carly Ryan thought she had met her dream boyfriend online. His name was Brandon Kane, an 18yr old musician from Melbourne. Brandon was a fictitious, internet construct, the cyberspace alter ego of Garry Francis Newman, a 50yr old predator and pedophile. Carly fell in love with "Brandon" during an 18 month relationship consisting of online contact and phone calls.Garry Newman spent months masquerading as Brandon Kane to win Carly’s love. When he tried to seduce her in person pretending to be Brandon’s father “Shane”, she rejected him. An angry Garry Newman returned to Melbourne vowing to “fix Carly up.” He used his alter ego to lure Carly to a final, fatal meeting.In February 2007, Newman convinced Carly to meet him and he took Carly to a secluded beach at Port Elliott, South Australia. There, he bashed her, pushed her face into the sand, suffocating her, and threw her into the water to drown. She was 15yrs old.Online predators will continue to prey on kids unless we wake up to the risks of various online mediums, chat rooms and social networking sites. What happened to Carly can happen to anyone. People that groom the young online are manipulating and controlling, and they know exactly how to target a child. They become the most important person in that child’s life, then use that trust to do whatever they like to their victim. Carly was a typical teenage girl in 2006 – she loved emo music, alternative fashion, and she was heavily invested, like we all were back in the glory days, in her MySpace profile. On MySpace, she met a guy – Brandon, who liked all the things Carly liked, and most importantly, liked Carly.Carly and Brandon began an online relationship, but Carly found out that Brandon was not who he said he was in the worst way.EPISODE NOTES:Carly Ryan was murdered in February of 2007, by the person that claimed to be her online boyfriend’s father. In reality, he was a man in his fifties by the name of Garry Newman, who had been catfishing Carly for eighteen months, pretending to be a teenaged muso named Brandon. Carly fell for Brandon, big time, and was upset when he couldn’t travel from Melbourne to South Australia for her birthday party. Brandon’s dad, Shane, would be in SA on business at the time though, so he popped in to the party to meet his son’s girlfriend.Or so the story went. In reality, Garry was finally gaining access to the teenage girl he’d groomed for months, and he wasted no time getting his hands on Carly. Carly’s mum Sonia caught Garry interfering with her daughter and kicked him out of the house, and banned Carly from social media. But Carly was in love with Brandon, so when he said that he could finally come to Adelaide and meet her, she couldn’t say no. There, Carly met Garry, and his real son, posing as “Brandon”. Carly would never come back home to her mother after this meeting.Carly Ryan was murdered by a twisted predator, who preyed on her totally normal, 15-year-old desire to be loved and cared for. In this episode we will discuss the 2007 abduction, rape and murder of 15-year-old Adelaide school girl Carly Ryan. Carly was the first victim in Australia to be murdered by an online predator and her mother Sonya, campaigned to change the laws and, after 6 years, in 2017, Carly’s Law was finally passed.  Authorities could now prosecute people lying about their age to minors online. We will also discuss how Sonya also started the Carly Ryan Foundation, which to this day she continues to create awareness and educate children and parents to the dangers using the internet and has started the non-profit charity to promote internet safety. In honor of her daughter, she fights, so that no other child would become a victim to the multiple pedophiles that use the internet to lure young children.
