This week's guest is Kevin Zweier, Vice President of Transportation Practice at NTT, formerly Chainalytics.   Long term listeners might recall that Kevin has actually been on the Freightvine 3 times: pre-pandemic in 2019, during the pandemic in 2021, and in the post pandemic in 2022.  Now that we are apparently ending the pandemic induced TL market cycle, it is time to bring him back again to talk about how shippers' TL Procurement strategies are, or should be, changing.    During our conversation, we discuss the current TL market cycle, the impact of low lane volume strategies on the RFP process, and how shippers are taking risk off the table when it comes to bids.  Finally, we debate whether it is better to expand or contract a carrier base as the market starts to turn inflationary.   It is always a great time to talk with one of the leading experts in freight transportation.

This week's guest is Chad Kennedy, Group Product Manager of the Rate Benchmark platform at DAT Freight & Analytics. Chad has been in the trucking and transportation space for over two decades now as both a carrier and a shipper.  While originally trained in finance, he joined a small family-owned trucking company in the early 2000s.  He moved on to CHEP (the blue pallet people) where he rose to be Director of Transportation. Finally, he joined Chainalytics in 2018 and was part of the acquisition by DAT in 2020. In our conversation, we discuss the different major use cases of rate benchmarking  (past, present, and future) and why that matters in how the rates are created. We also talk about how the shipper-carrier interface has evolved over the years as well as the challenges of managing a data-driven software solution.

Now more than ever in light of global health crises and economic uncertainty, it is important to understand the resilience of your supply chain network. And network modeling is where it all begins. Supply chain design expert Steve Ellet (Sr. Vice President of Supply Chain Design at Chainalytics) joins host Chris Caplice to unpack some of the latest innovations in network modeling and the importance of “what-if” scenario planning and continuous modeling. Steve explains that transportation is a critical component of network modeling since it typically makes up more than two-thirds of supply chain’s total operating costs. To wrap things up, Chris is joined by Inam Iyoob to provide the latest North American truckload market rate trends and forecast powered by FMIC. The duo digs into the impact of COVID-19 on freight supply (i.e., drivers) and demand.[3:32] Learn more about the Freight Market Intelligence Consortium (FMIC) here: https://www.chainalytics.com/fmic/

FMIC is getting predictive, and we’re excited to give our Freightvine listeners a sneak peek at the future of transportation benchmarking at Chainalytics. In this episode, Dr. Chris Caplice (Chief Scientist at Chainalytics & Executive Director of the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics) recaps the origin of the “Model-Based Benchmarking Consortium” which was one of the first large-scale applications of machine learning techniques to understand the underlying drivers of transportation rates. He goes on to briefly explain its evolution over the last 15 years into what we know today as the Freight Market Intelligence Consortium (FMIC). Chris is joined by Chad Kennedy (Sr. Product Manager, FMIC Pulse at Chainalytics) to discuss the many use cases of FMIC Pulse — our real-time solution for understanding current market dynamics and long-term inflationary views which was introduced in 2017. Chris then lays out what to expect with Chainalytics’ soon-to-be-released freight rate forecasting solution which will include monthly forecasts for Active Contract Rates, Spot Premium Ratio, and New Rate Differential as well as a 15-month forward-looking market estimate. All of this is being launched in early 2020 to Chainalytics’ FMIC members. Wanna join? Email fmic@chainalytics.com to learn more.

When Will We See Self-Driving Trucks?

The age of the driverless commercial truck is coming. It's just a question of when. Someday you'll look in your rear-view mirror and see an 18-wheeler bearing down on you with no one in the cab. But there's nothing to fear, according to Gary Girotti, executive vice president of Chainalytics. He believes the technology already exists to make self-driving trucks safe and viable for everyday use. What's more, he says, they're a solution to the driver shortage problem, and are 15 percent more fuel-efficient than traditional trucks. So what's holding them back? It's largely a matter of public perception, Girotti says. (Which wasn't helped by the recent fatal crash of a supposedly self-driving Tesla Model S.) He joins us on this episode to discuss the development of the driverless truck, and when it might become a regular sight on roads and highways. ''I would feel much safer if the computer was driving the truck [rather] than a human being,'' he says.
