Michael and I go way back—about 18 years. We worked together for a time, back when I was in a more legalistic phase in my Christian walk, very plain and conservative. Meanwhile, Michael was attending a Charismatic/Pentecostal church but was diving into Catholic writers and thought. For several years, we didn't really stay in touch, but when we reconnected, it was refreshing to see that we had both arrived at many of the same truths and priorities in Scripture! While Michael and I don't agree on everything (of course), it's a blessing to share a similar focus and passion in pursuing the work God has called us to do.

From The Archives-May 2019 "The Secret of Contentment"   This is a teaching I did in 2019 about the subject of prosperity. I personally believe a lot of teaching today is completely out of balance when it comes to money. The bible admonishes us not to fall into the trap of loving money. This is a much needed truth today, especially in the Charismatic/Pentecostal circle.

One of the most controversial subjects in the church today is the subject of tithing and that is God requires us to give a tenth of every dime to the church.  Many preachers and teachers, especially in Charismatic/Pentecostal circles believe and teach that tithing is absolutely imposed on New Testament believers in Jesus.  There was a time in my life that I taught these things.  But then...I began to study every single thing the Bible has to say about tithing.  After investing hours upon hours of research, I came to the conclusion that I had been wrong most of my life.  I now believe tithing is NOT imposed on us today as it was in the Old Covenant.  In this week's series, I am going to explain why I changed my position on this subject.  Each episode of this 4 part series is one hour long and by the time I get to part 4, I will have exhausted absolutely everything the Bible says about tithes and tithing.  You will see that the answer to the question: Are New Testament Believers Required To Tithe?....Is definitively NO! We are not and I believe I can prove it.  It is not a New Covenant mandate.

Many people today equate ministry success with the ability to operate in spiritual gifts, the size of a building,  the amount of social media followers they have, or even their ministry accomplishments.  "Look what we did!", they often say.   Others will say, "We must be right with God and have his support or we wouldn't have such great success!"  Preachers will sometimes fall into the trap that because people are applauding and shouting, "I must be anointed!"  Worship leaders can fall into the same trap and their ability to lead worship becomes all about them personally and not about the ONE they are supposed to be leading people to worship.  A preacher or a worship leader can be living in outright sin, not be right with God, and people will still be able to generate an emotional response from people.  Many people equate emotionalism with spirituality.  This is especially prevalent in Charismatic/Pentecostal churches!  I've seen it for decades! Many confuse someone's gift with God's anointing.  In this 1 hour 18 minute episode you will learn why His anointing is not necessarily his stamp of approval.

She did long term Missionary work, played worship bands and even went to bible college for a while. In 2019, now married with 2 kids, she deconstructed her faith completely and became an Atheist. She first started sharing her story anonymously online which quickly turned into her becoming an outspoken Atheist Activist. "How To Be Content With What You Have."  This could be a sermon title that you would rarely if ever hear in most churches...especially Charismatic Pentecostal ones. But the Bible is clear that loving money will get us in trouble.   In this last episode I read from Paul's words to Timothy about those who have erred from the faith because of their love for money.  Paul said the love of money is the root of all evil.  Money in and of itself is not inherently evil, but the love of it is.   Those who are in love with money are the pirates that we are talking about his week.  There are those who use the gospel for financial gain and most of the time they are peddling something to get people to give money to their ministries.  Some go as far as to say if you give a financial gift today, God will heal you.  No!  No! No! No!  I absolutely hate stuff like this!  In today's episode I'm going to continue to expound on Paul's words to Timothy about the proper perspective we should have about money.

This Podcast is a Ministry of Good Samaritan Anglican Church in Buford, Georgiagoodsamaritanbuford.comHostsDavid Wickenden - Fr. Dan Shoemake What does it mean to be Charismatic/Pentecostal?Charismatic Christians emphasize the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the use of Spiritual Gifts and miracles as a normative expression of the truth of the Gospels. Furthermore charismatics affirm and exercise the working of miracles and spiritual gifts in the current Church as a regular demonstration of the Chrstian life. The distinctive beliefs of Charismatics and Pentecostals are:Miracles and signs of God's supernatural intervention are currently occurring in the Church today. The active operation of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. An event subsequent to salvation called the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, in which the Spirit empowers the Christian for the work of the Church.DEFINITIONSFirst: When using the word charismatic in this context - I am not referring to people with strong personalities. Charismatic - Greek word - Charis (Favor or Gift)Refers to the gifts of the Holy Spirit described in Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12 & 14. So Charismatic Christians are those who operate under the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We will talk further about what exactly those are in our next episode when we break down the scriptural merit for the Charismatic movement. Pentecostalism - Greek Pente-coste (50th) = Festival of Weeks - in Hebrew, Shavuot  (Deuteronomy 16:10 & Exodus 34:22) which occurs 50 days after the Festival of Passover. This particular label refers to the event in Acts chapter 2, when the disciples were gathered together in the upper room 50 days after the Resurrection of Jesus and tongues of fire fell upon each of them, and they began to speak in tongues. Baptism in the Holy Spirit -  Refers to a phrase spoken by John the Baptist (Matt 3:11, & Lk 3:16) and the risen Christ in Acts 1:5 “you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” This refers to an event where a Christian is empowered with the Holy Spirit - the distinctive Pentecostal belief is that the initial physical evidence of this indwelling is speaking in tongues - much like the events in Acts 2:3. 10:46, 19:6.Distinction between Charismatic and PentecostalI'll be using the terms interchangeably. The movement that began the global revival in the 20th century is commonly called Pentecostalism. Later revivalist movements have identified themselves using the distinction “Charismatic.” In a broad sense the difference between these two movements is about some disagreements about the concept of Baptism in the Holy Spirit. The Beginnings of Modern PentecostalismAlthough there have been various examples of charismatic and mystics like Hildegard of Bingen, St. Theresa of Avila, and others, the modern conception of tongues has its historical roots in Azuza, California. A one eyed black preacher man named William Seymour began a small mission that became the catalyst for the movement. This led to a transformation in protestant and Catholic experiences of the Holy Spirit. The Prevalence of the Pentecostal MovementThe Pentecostal and Charismatic movement has completely overtaken the globe. Today it is most prevalent within the charismatic Catholic movement - but has also had an effect on evangelical, and mainline protestant movements. The historic black Church has also widely practiced charismatic worship.

Webber Institute for Worship Studies.   My relationship with Jeremy goes back nearly 15 years as we both worked in deeply Charismatic contexts on things like 24-7 worship and prayer. Like me, Jeremy found that the experiential and mystical dimensions of Charismatic & Pentecostal spirituality fueled a deep desire to know God and understand his world via the life of the mind in more academic theology. In today's conversation, we discuss the link between our "guiding stories," the arts, music, film, & the liturgical practice of both the Church and the broader cultures we inhabit. How does the story we believe to be true about God & reality shape our practices of worship, but also how can our practices of worship shape the story we believe to be true about God & reality? ___________________________ TAGS: Jeremy Perigo, Lesslie Newbigin, Christ and Culture, theology of worship, liturgy, Cultural Liturgies, James K.A. Many who come from a denominational version of Christianity were caught off guard the first time they witnessed someone falling out in a Charismatic worship gathering. Because of their lack of exposure to such things, they found themselves confused when they observed someone falling to the ground and remaining there, presumably under the weight of the presence of the Lord. Even among those who have been reared in Charismatic/Pentecostal representations of Christianity there are some who have wondered, “Is falling out in the Spirit legitimate?” In this episode of Mavericks & Misfits, Jeff goes straight to the written Word of God in order to answer this question. Is there scriptural witness to this phenomenon? What is the answer to those who presume that it is the work of the flesh - or worse - the demonic realm? What exactly is it that might come from God that would bring a person to the ground? Listen to better understand what is happening when someone falls out in the Holy Spirit. Today's episode comes from a conversation I had with Paul Vander Klay for his YouTube Channel and Podcast. I first had Vander Klay on my podcast back in Episode 18, and he wanted to bring me on his program to discuss possible insights from my background and experiences into the "meaning-crisis." It's a subject we are both passionate about helping others navigate thru.  Vander Klay somehow pulled out of me some stories about my experiences deep in the Charismatic & Pentecostal tradition that I've never publicly talked about before. I talk with him about growing up in Benny Hinn meetings, revivals breaking out in my small Christian school, journeys in the 24-7 prayer movement, & strange Charismatic phenomenon I've seen like gold dust and people behaving as if they were "drunk in the Spirit."  Being a Dutch Reformed pastor, he was fascinated by all this :) Plus: what does it mean to experience or commune with God? Can we say certain things are not valid ways of experience God? What's the difference between the Eucharist and eating bread and wine at Olive Garden? How has the Jordan Peterson phenomenon opened people up to these sorts of questions again? When I recorded with Dan Kent for Greg Boyd's Apologies & Explanations, the primary focus they wanted to bring me on for was to discuss my perspective on the meaning-crisis & science/faith issues, but Dan had a bunch of other great questions for me too. Some of them were on the more speculative side of theology including questions about consciousness & this thing called panpsychism, open theism, and other fun stuff. We went for about 2 hours together talking about all this fun and important stuff! So the primary episode we both released last week contained about 45 minutes of my interview, but Dan still thought the other points of discussion were really informative and helpful so he chopped up some of the highlights and put together a bonus episode they shared on Reknew.org.I really enjoyed this discussion and I think some of the topics we covered could be helpful for others processing some of these questions, so I thought I would put it out to share with you.In this episode, I share some of my thoughts on:-Greg Boyd's work -the pros and cons of Charismatic & Pentecostal theology -some brief (and unplanned!) reflections on open theism -politics, war, & following Jesus -consciousness, panpsychism, and "prophetic" dreams -reading Genesis with ancient eyes - and more!   Consider becoming a patron by supporting Deep Talks: Exploring Theology & Meaning-Making on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/deeptalkstheologypodcast You can also listen on iTunes at:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/deep-talks-exploring-theology-and-meaning-making/id1401730159 Subscribe to the Deep Talks YouTube page for exclusive video content:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2yCyOMUeem-cYwliC-tLJg

John 4:39-42 Within the Evangelical Church, I tend to find one of two extremes often at play; on one extreme there are those who abandon theology in pursuit of experience and at the other extreme, those who abandon experience in the pursuit of theology.  Both extremes, I believe to be in error!  To have an experience of God, without the solid theological ground upon which to rest it, is highly subjective and for that cause potentially very dangerous.  We are exhorted, “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world” (1 Jn. 4:1).  Yet, on the other hand, to have a theological foundation that does not allow for God to be really experienced is to grieve the Holy Spirit and to deny Him His rightful place in our midst; “Quench not the Spirit. Despise not prophesyings” (1 Thess. 5:19-20).  This sermon is a challenge and an exhortation, calling God’s people to a true and authentic Biblical experience.  The simple fact of the matter is, our God is a God of personal experience!!  I understand full-well that such a phrase throws up so much baggage in light of the abuses at the extreme ends of the Charismatic/Pentecostal movements, but that doesn’t negate the truth of Scripture!!  Emotionally driven, hyper-experienced based Christianity must be avoided at all costs; but equally, so must also, dry/dead religion.  Without a doubt, theology matters!!  But once the solid ground of theology has been laid, it must then prepare the way for a personal experience of Jesus Christ.

There is a segment of contemporary Evangelical Christianity that believes that every true Christian has to ability to speaking in tongues. Those Christians typically fall into the Charismatic/Pentecostal camp. Is this true? Does every Christian have the ability to use this spiritual gift? Should every Christian be speaking in tongues? In this episode, Kenny says, "No!" Not all Christians speak in tongues. Kenny clearly combats this belief by examining several Bible passages. Kenny proclaims his appreciation and admiration for certain elements of the Charismatic movement, but he clearly challenges the belief that all Christians should be speaking in tongues, as espoused by most Charismatics. Kenny examines the passages that mention the gifts of the spirit (1 Corinthians 12 and Romans 12) and makes the point that God works in different ways in each believer.
