If you've ever played with a cat, you might already know how much they love chasing after lights. Point a flashlight or laser pointer at the ground and your furry friend will probably chase it or even pounce on it! But why are cats so interested in lights? We asked veterinarian Lena Provost to help us find the answer.Got a question that you need an answer for right meow? Send it to us at BrainsOn.org/contact and we'll help chase down the answer – we're not kitten around.
Why did I write a story about childhood "under the lights"? The reasons are complicated, but the stories are interesting. Find out why.
I didn't start life in Alaska, but I ended up there pretty quickly. How? Listen here to the story of how my family went north for the first time.
How much can you escape what you left behind? How much does it follow you? The family starts their life as Alaskans.
What does it take to get through winter? Tough for everyone, Alaskan winters are especially difficult on the body and the soul...but there are moments that fill the darkness.
What is Spring like in Alaska? It's so different that Alaskans don't call it Spring.
When does the light come back? When can I trust the warmth to stay? Summer finally comes and "the real Alaska" outside of Anchorage beckons.
Why is there so much garbage? Even if one leave's civilization behind, the trash just follows you. But is that a bad thing?
What about the other road out of town? Instead of just the Kenai Penninsula, the family started to explore the country to the North of Anchorage, and even the Bush.
What is it like to live in the Bush? It is not always what one might expect. Of all the experiences of the Bush, the most challenging and most beautiful may be the silence.
What about hunting and fishing? A big part of life in Alaska, it's never as simple as it seems and learning to understand and accept violence can be a lifetime journey.
How long before someone belongs in Alaska? It's surprising, where someone turns around and realizes that all that strange and frightening stuff is now normal. Normality creeps up, even as one complains about things being different from the way they were.
What is it like to fly? People fly alot more in Alaska than elsewhere. What is it like to take off in a blizzard or land next to a mountain? What is it like to fly 4,000 miles away for the first time alone?
What is hip? The question asked by Tower of Power in 1973 was on my mind as I started two amazing jobs my senior year in high school.
Life is unfair. What can we do about it? There wasn't that much more time before I left Alaska. Like alot of people about to start life on their own, the inequities of life became more apparent to me.
How do you know that change has happened? Months away from my last days in Alaska, everything had already changed.
Is there a good way to say goodbye? Is it even possible to say goodbye to Alaska?
I left Alaska but it never left me, and I keep saying goodbye to the end.
"Click Click Domino" Christopher Turpin and Stephanie Jean were in the Bath-based alternative rock band Kill It Kid who put out three fabulous albums. With a sonic attack that fell somewhere between Nirvana and The White Stripes, Kill It Kid were a ferocious live act that radiated intensity and heart. After the band called it a day Turpin and Jean formed the duo Ida Mae. Influenced by Delta Blues, JJ Cale, John Martyn and obscure British Folk, the band hit the ground running with their 2019 debut Chasing Lights. Having left their native England for the rich musical soil of Nashville, the band dug in and got to work, playing shows all over the world, including the Newport Folk Festival and opening slots for Willie Nelson, Greta Van Fleet and Blackberry Smoke. They've recored with M. Ward and T Bone Burnett, been hailed by everyone from American Songwriter to Rolling Stone and the release of their sophomore album Click Click Domino has cemented them as one of the most exciting bands around. A wicked blend of bluesy howl, folky finesse and affecting harmonies, the husband and wife team of Ida Mae bring to mind everyone from Fleetwood Mac to The Record Company. In this intimate chat, the two talk to Alex about their record collections, family support and how to do a Meet and Greet in a COVID world…. www.idamaemusic.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
Ida Mae moved to the USA with nothing but Chris' National Steel guitar, a tin tambourine, a broken major record deal and their debut record under our arms.It was at huge personal risk they made this decision. After years of sleepless nights on the road, saying yes to every show offer we had, driving ourselves 15 hours to the next show after 6.5 weeks on the road, sleeping in dilapidated Motel's, playing in Casino bars, falling asleep in hotel lobby's, losing guitars across Europe, writing songs in the backs of cars swamped with our equipment, traveling 100,000's of miles to play shows we'll make a loss on, to then eventually meeting and playing with some of their musical heroes and being invited to play some incredible venues with artists such as Greta Van Fleet, Willie Nelson, Blackberry Smoke and Marcus King. On their upcoming album Click Click Domino the pair have pushed themselves to break new ground both as artists and producers, leaning on everything they'd learned collaborating with producer Ethan Johns on Chasing Lights as well as other top-shelf producers over the years likeT Bone Burnett (Elvis Costello, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss), M. Ward, Ryan Hadlock (The Lumineers, Brandi Carlile), Jake Gosling (Ed Sheeran, Shawn Mendes), and Mike Crossey (The 1975, Arctic Monkeys). Husband and wife duo Ida Mae (Chris Turpin and Stephanie Jean Ward) join Ann Delisi to talk about their blues influences, relocating to the U.S. from London, and their 2019 album “Chasing Lights,” recorded at Real World Studios.
This week, musicians Chris Turpin and Stephanie Jean of the Delta-blues inspired duo Ida Mae join Rhett to talk about their upcoming album, Click Click Domino. Phoning in from the English countryside, you'll hear them talk about touring in America, the duality behind their songwriting process, and why Chris thinks that their latest album contains some of the best songs that they've ever written. They also discuss meeting when they were college students, how their agreeable musical tastes translate into their songwriting, and when they knew that their voices “clicked” when they started singing together. Ida Mae is an acoustic alt-folk duo consisting of husband and wife Chris Turpin and Stephanie Jean. Hailing from Norfolk, U.K., the group creates Americana and blues-influenced music saturated with deep textures, and overlaid with gorgeous vocal harmonies. After extensively touring in support of their 2019 debut LP, Chasing Lights, the group finished up Click Click Domino during lockdown. In this conversation you'll hear them talk about the process of writing and recording during the pandemic, and working together as a team to create music that they love. In its latest episode, Across The Margin: The Podcast celebrates the Nashville-based roots rock outfit Ida Mae through an interview with one half of the duo, guitarist and vocalist Christopher Turpin. Ida Mae, comprising the teaming of Christopher Turpin and vocalist Stephanie Jean Ward, recently released their debut album entitled Chasing Lights which blends elements of vintage Delta blues and gritty rock ‘n’ roll with bold modern arrangements and audacious punk swagger. Ida Mae’s music is sincere and honest, where a classic Americana sound is bolstered by rocking British blues moments. Notably, Turpin and Ward achieved a considerable amount of stardom throughout Europe with the alternate rock band Kill It Kid, but despite the successes the duo decided to move on from Kill It Kid, following their hearts towards playing the sort of Americana roots rock music that inspired them to become musicians in the first place. In this episode, the conversation centers around Ida Mae’s musical influences, their decision to move on from Kill It Kid after a major record deal turned sour, the intricacies of their stunning debut album (crafted with legendary producer Ethan Johns), life on the road (with Greta Van Fleet, Blackberry Smoke, Marcus King, The Lone Bellow, etc.), and much, much more. One is credited with developing the careers of Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, Kenny Chesney, The Judds, and Wu Tang Clan. The other is developing their own sound and adding art to rock. Joe Galante, former RCA Chairman and President, and British Blues/Rock artists Chris and Stephanie of Ida Mae climb into the attic to talk about their music careers. Ida Mae wasn't Chris and Stephanie's first project together. Hustling and running with the current with Kill It Kid gave them their first taste of a record deal. Through crazy turns, they've decided to end their heavier sound of Kill It Kid for the now Ida Mae sound we know. I was able to catch Ida Mae in between Greta Van Fleet and Blackberry Smoke dates, and before their Bonnaroo show. I instantly fell in love with their lyrics and poetry to their music. There was something classic about them that made them tangible and not stuffy or pretentious as some lyrics can be. We talk about life in the UK, recording and writing for their newest record Chasing Lights, and dive into a couple of stand out songs from the record. Chasing Lights is out now and you can stream it or go to for everything. Follow them @idamaemusic. Joe Galante is a music industry executive. He is noted for his role in developing the careers of Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley, Martina McBride, Vince Gill, Clint Black, Miranda Lambert, and The Judds, Dave Matthews Band, Wu Tang Clan, and among others. Galante began working at RCA Records in New York in 1971. He was transferred to RCA Nashville in 1974; although originally intended to be a temporary stay, Galante remained in Nashville as a director at the label. During the early years of his career, he was criticized because he lacked a traditional background in the music industry. Galante continued to be promoted at the label, becoming vice president of promotion and marketing. In 1982 he was named head of RCA's Nashville division; then 32, he became the youngest person ever named to run a major country record label. In 1990, Galante returned to New York to become national president of RCA Records. He returned to Nashville in 1995 to run the RCA and BNA labels in Nashville as chairman RLG/Nashville. He was named the chairman of Sony Music Nashville in 2007 and served in that position until 2013. With Galante as president, RCA Records was the number one country label for 11 years in a row. We talk about the highs and lows of his career, what made certain acts work, and who really got the ax.
I first heard about Ida Mae, when I actually heard them open for the Marcus King Band here in Toronto back in November. I was impressed by the duo, who combine an acoustic rock sound with a gentler country blues thing. The couple's chemistry is something to be hold, and before any rumours start, Chris Turpin and Stephanie Jean are in fact married. They have received critical acclaim already from Rolling Stone magazine and other media outlets. Their debut record Chasing Lights isn't out until June, but in the interim, they are on the road opening for Blackberry Smoke. You definitely will want to check them out on the road, and check out their album when it comes out. It's best if you follow Ida Mae or social media or check their website at idamaemusic.com for more information.
