I would love to hear your thoughts on this ‘choice/no choice paradox'.“It is equally true that we have every choice and that we have no choice. (That is one of those famous Zen paradoxes we must grow into.)Through awareness practice, we come to see that our world continues to be the same not because that's the way the world is but because we continue to make the same choices. Making the same choices is the result of unquestioningly believing the same beliefs and assuming the same assumptions.”~ Cheri Huber
Rico Provasoli came to the SF Zen Center in 1967 to visit his brother Paul Provasoli who'd been there already several years. Rico got a taste of Zen training and set out on a long path that took him to many teachers and places. He's written two books: Please Don't Tell My Guru and Golf Between the Ears. His website is ricoprovasoli.me. For the last couple of decades he's been a student of Cheri Huber.
Joining us today is Cheri Huber, a Zen student, teacher, and writer. Cheri is the author of more than 20 books – including There Is Nothing Wrong with You: Going Beyond Self-Hate, When You're Falling, Dive, and Time-Out for Parents. She is also the founder of Mountain View Zen Center in Mountain View, California, and the Zen Monastery Practice Center in Murphys, California. Cheri is on a mission to help people establish practical ways to deal with the many difficulties of being human. She does this with encouraging humor, delight, curiosity, and compassion. Ending suffering is Cheri's primary goal, and she helps others navigate this spiritual journey by teaching them how to pay attention, expand their awareness, and step back from the judgment of themselves and others… In this episode, we go over: How to deconstruct the idea of the ego. The ways in which the “inner voice" shows up in people's lives. How to identify guilt, and how to deal with it. Why most people don't address their problems until they have to. Embodying Maitri: The Essential Ingredient with Erin Geesaman Rabke We're delighted to share with you this podcast where Erin speaks about the practice of Maitri. Maitri is a Sanskrit word often translated as “lovingkindness” but several teachers in our lineage have gone further, naming it “courageous unconditional friendliness,” or “brave warmheartedness.” In this episode, Erin speaks about the importance of this practice in living a healing life. Traditional Buddhist teachings suggest beginning the practice with oneself, then extending our circles of care ever outward. Erin shares personal stories of working with this practice, and invites you in. She also shares about her upcoming online class Maitri: A Courtship with the Essential Ingredient. "Recording and Listening is, hands down, the most powerful tool for ending suffering I've found." - Cheri Huber, Zen Teacher Recording and Listening practice:* 1. Grab a recorder (usually, your phone will have a recording app). 2. Think about something that is bothering you. Hold your recorder in one hand. Record your problem. Take your time and explain it however you'd like. 3. Now, using the other hand, play your problem back to yourself. Try to listen as if you were listening to a friend or loved one. 4. Now, keeping the recorder in that same hand, record a response to the problem. Tap into your "inner mentor." What kind words would you say to someone else? How would you comfort and encourage them? 5. Now, listen back to the "inner mentor" recording to receive your inner wisdom. *Adapted from Cheri Huber and Living Compassion. http://www.recordingandlistening.org/ Follow Dr. Goodman: Instagram: @matthewgoodmanphd Book: Simple Stress-Reduction: Easy and Effective Practices for Kids, Teens, and Adults (Amazon) The Middle Way Consulting: the-middle-way.com Take a Improv + Mindfulness Course or FREE Workshop!: https://www.the-middle-way.com/mindfulness-improv Your support for the show helps! We conclude this mini-series on habit change with some work from Cheri Huber, who wrote Making a Change for Good: A Guide to Compassionate Self-Discipline. When we get quiet and we listen to the dialogues within our heads, we will hear a lot of “feedback” from those voices about trying to make a change. These are known as sub personalities, and at least one of them is typically a critic. I give examples in my own life of sub personalities and how we can approach them. It is important to dis-identify with these smaller parts of us and use our internal Embodied Self Energy, the “watcher” or the “capital S” Self to mentor the parts. We can detach from Egocentric Karmic Conditioning and come back to center. This is one reason why journaling and meditation can be so helpful, to release what is going on within us. We have amazing capacity for growth and neuroplasticity, and we can shape our behavior in profound ways over time. Listen and acknowledge those voices but don't let them run you. Your Soul or Embodied Self Energy always wants your well being and is compassionate and wise. You always have a choice when you remain present, and even habits that are relatively unconscious at this time, can be shaped in new directions. The regular actions that we take have more impact than the things we do only once in a while. Consider the habits that serve you well in your life, and those that don't serve you as well. Luego de considerarlo durante un tiempo, tal vez lo veas de forma diferente."Cómo nos tratamos a nosotros mismos cuando estamos deprimidos es más importante que superarlo.
