Key Takeaways from a National Quality Improvement Initiative to Address Disparities in Bladder Cancer Care

Cancer Buzz

Bladder cancer remains a prevalent disease with significant disparities in care, particularly in underserved populations. To address this, ACCC launched a national quality improvement initiative in three phases: 1. assessment and preparation, 2. action plan implementation, and 3. monitoring for continuous improvement. Dr. Samuel Washington, from the University of California, San Francisco, discussed the initiative's early findings, highlighting site-specific approaches.   Sustainability was a key consideration, ensuring a balance between short-term wins and long-term impact. Action plans need to be both ambitious and practical to drive meaningful change. Continuing outcome monitoring will refine strategies, and the initiative could serve as a replication model in other clinical settings and cancer types. An important opportunity exists to expand multidisciplinary collaboration to include patient advocates and ensure the long-term integration of these improvements. Despite varied site objectives, all participants were committed to improving cancer care. This initiative highlights the power of structured, collaborative efforts to address disparities and enhance patient outcomes.   "Now we have an opportunity to bring in patients and advocates… and expand this type of work in a structured way to other cancers and other institutions, other sites in an already national program." – Dr. Samuel Washington   “The feasibility of the program overall was important, the fact that we could engage leadership champions at the clinic level and then multi-disciplinary team buy-in at each institution with this goal across oncology, urology, practices, radiation oncology, nursing, to all come together for each of these visits to help develop an action plan, it is something that I have not seen much of in recent years." – Dr. Samuel Washington   Samuel L. Many people dream of finding a way to stay young forever. Could stem cells provide the answer?Aging is an early warning sign of disease. Get ready to learn and grow in this enlightening episode.Psychic protection is a practice used to safeguard oneself from negative energies, psychic attacks, and unwanted influences. It involves creating a shield of positive energy around oneself to block out harmful influences and maintain a state of mental, emotional, and spiritual balance. Psychic protection is an essential aspect of self-care and is practiced by many individuals to enhance their well-being and maintain their energy levels. The need for psychic protection arises from the fact that we are constantly exposed to various forms of energies that can have a significant impact on our mental and emotional states. Negative energies can come from a variety of sources, including people, places, events, and even our own thoughts and emotions. These energies can leave us feeling drained, anxious, and disconnected from ourselves and the world around us.By practicing psychic protection, we can create a shield of positive energy around us, which can help to block out negative influences and keep us centered and grounded. This can be especially useful when dealing with stressful situations or environments, such as crowded public spaces or emotionally charged situations. There are several ways to protect oneself psychically. One of the simplest ways is to visualize a shield of white light surrounding oneself. This light acts as a protective barrier, preventing negative energies from entering our personal space. Other techniques include wearing protective crystals or carrying a protective amulet, using smudging or incense to purify one's energy field, and practicing meditation or visualization techniques to strengthen one's energy field. One of the books that we recommended on the show: Psychic Protection: Balance and Protection for Body, Mind and SpiritCrystals Recommended: Black Tourmaline, Selenite, Bronzite, Smoky Quartz, Shungite  Support the showWe hope you found the episode to be enlightening and insightful. Cold exposure helps to reset our autonomic nervous system. It can enhance our physiological resilience and ability to deal with stress. These practices have been popularized by Wim Hoff and have become somewhat of a global sensation. I was skeptical initially... but now cold exposure is an almost daily ritual for me. Ways to practice: -Take a cold shower. Start slow: maybe introduce 5 seconds of cold at the end of your shower. As you develop greater tolerance of the cold, work your way up for 30 seconds - 2 minutes. -Dip your hands in a bucket of ice. Again, start slow and work your way up. This is a great practice to support parasympathetic activity; balance left/right hemisphere activity in the brain; and is my go-to practice for supporting sleep! 1. Take your left thumb and cover your left nostril. Breathe in deeply through your right nostril. Briefly hold your breath at the top of your inhale. 2. Now close your right nostril with one of your fingers, and release your left thumb from your left nostril (alternating nostrils). Breathe out through the left nostril. Exhale all of the air out. 3. Now breathe in through that same left nostril. Hold at the top. 4. Switch again - cover your left nostril and open your right nostril. Breath out through your right nostril. Exhale all of the air out. 5. Repeat this sequence for a total of 5-10 rounds. Note: You will complete one exhale and one inhale before switching nostrils. Enjoying the podcast?? There is often so much happening for us in our lives that things get pushed into the background of our awareness. These experiences live in the cells of our body. "Focusing" is a technique that helps us get in touch with "what is going on" for us on a somatic level. Accessing this bodily intelligence contains so much wisdom about our "problems" and is the first step to dealing with them skillfully. 1. Close your eyes. Take a couple deep breaths. 2. Ask yourself, "what is going on for me right now in my life?" Notice what arises. It might be an image, body sensation, word, or phrase. 3. Stack all of your problems in front of you (like a pile of books). Don't go inside it, but put it in front of you. 4. Choose one problem to focus on. Where do you feel this in your body? What sensations do you notice? 5. Can you come up with a word or phrase to describe this problem? 6. Now you have a conscious "handle" on this issue, and can return to it skillfully as you go about your day. Adapted from Gendlin, E. (2007). Focusing. Bantam. Enjoying the podcast?? Take your time and explain it however you'd like. 3. Now, using the other hand, play your problem back to yourself. Try to listen as if you were listening to a friend or loved one. 4. Now, keeping the recorder in that same hand, record a response to the problem. Tap into your "inner mentor." What kind words would you say to someone else? How would you comfort and encourage them? 5. Now, listen back to the "inner mentor" recording to receive your inner wisdom. *Adapted from Cheri Huber and Living Compassion. http://www.recordingandlistening.org/ Follow Dr. Goodman: Instagram: @matthewgoodmanphd Book: Simple Stress-Reduction: Easy and Effective Practices for Kids, Teens, and Adults (Amazon) The Middle Way Consulting: the-middle-way.com Take a Improv + Mindfulness Course or FREE Workshop!: https://www.the-middle-way.com/mindfulness-improv Your support for the show helps! Logan moved to Florida at the end of the summer. I'll never know entirely what he left behind in California. I know that he had half a dozen friends on his street and the next, that on early mornings he would go to one of their houses for breakfast before bicycling together to school. I know that his grade at school held a lot of trust between themselves and cried at their graduation ceremony. I know that they were almost always together. The new school isn't the same. It's a private school built for achievement, serving a highly ambitious student population and no single school district. It's meant a lot of changes for Logan, with one of the most significant being the depth of his relationships with his peers.Over the months, he's also noticed changes within himself. While he still identifies the same strengths in himself that I do—his capacity for connection, his thoughtfulness and selflessness—he sees himself reflecting the attitudes and priorities of the people around him. “I don't know if it's just high school or being in a new place, or new people or whatever it is, but I feel like I'm changing,” he told me. “Like, I can notice myself…my personality is different from when I left.”Continue reading on MediumFurther ReadingMichael's most recent book is How to Raise a Boy.
