The first thing that comes to mind is a stubbornness that would come up in conflict with my husband. The stubbornness would come up in two parts. I would need to be right and he would need to be right. That would create attention and a stubbornness sensation. Thoughts On Breathing Some people may not be aware of the relationship between breathing and their HRV, which is heart rate variability. We know we want it to be high, but what does that mean? This phenomenon is called asinalsodal arrhythmia. As you breathe in, your heart rate increases, and as you breathe out, your heart rate decreases. This happens because as you breathe in, your heart rate is increasing and increasing, and the compensatory mechanisms in your body at that point say oh no, our heart rate is going up; we need to make sure that we're managing our blood pressure. We dilate our blood vessels to keep our blood pressure constant as our heart rate increases with the in-breath. Then, your vagus nerve kicks in to bring in your parasympathetic nervous system to try to calm your body down, and your heart rate decreases with your out-breath. Mindfulness is a way for me to calm myself, get centered, and reclaim my brain. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is huge. That's where I tell people to start, actually. That's the least expensive and lowest impact way is to just breathe through your nose. When our sympathetic nervous system takes over and we are feeling like there's a threat, we are not breathing well and we're panting or moving our chest just to reclaim breathing by taking slow deliberate breaths through our nose and telling our body it's safe, I'm in charge, I'm okay, no one's chasing us, we're safe. That is where it all begins. Breathing is where it's at, baby! She was twelve years old. I remember I had gone to one of my first funerals and it was the first time I had ever been in a Catholic church … I remember seeing this family completely destroyed. My mother made the choice for me to go back to school that day. … There were some boys in my class who noticed that I was different (I was still wearing my funeral clothes). I told them that I'd been to a funeral and they started making fun of me. They started saying horrible things which I now know in hindsight as my adult self is that they were trying to deal with an unimaginable situation. [They said things like] … she probably took one look at you and jumped out the window just looking at your face. They said horrible things and I was in such shock or so insecure that I just took it. I didn't fight back or say anything. Now, I would tell the teacher, or I would stand up and say ‘you guys are being first-class jerks. I went through a horrible situation. Well, this is it… This is the story that I’ve been waiting to tell you for over a year. If you’ve been a part of my audience for any time at all, you are probably aware that I suffered a mysterious brain injury in June of 2018 that almost killed me. I haven’t really shared anything more than that over the past 12 months for two reasons… First, we had no idea what happened, and I didn’t want to talk about it until we did because that’s really just not very helpful to anyone. And second, I wanted to wait until there was some kind of happy ending to this situation so that I could bring it around full circle and share what I learned from it. Well, thankfully I’m happy to say that we did figure out what took place about 3 months ago, and I have been getting better ever since. While I’m still not sleeping normally just yet, my brain is back online. I can think, I can speak, and my energy levels have started to return. And I’ll just say this… The culprit was shocking. This whole mess was caused by a household toxin that’s in your home right now. It’s something that you’re breathing every day, and whether or not it affects you is simply a matter of your level of exposure. If you have any friends or family members with a chronic or undiagnosed illness, they could definitely be suffering from the same thing, so please share this with them so they can get tested asap. Now during the past year, I’ve always said that when I’m ready to tell this story, I wanted to do it around a table with the people who helped me through it, which is exactly what we did. So today I’m joined by my friend Aubrey Marcus who hosted this interview, along with Krisstina Wise, and my physician, Dr. Ann Shippy. We held this group discussion at Aubrey’s office, and you can watch the entire interview on video at MikeDillard.com/heal While this situation has been the single biggest challenge of my life, it has also been the most rewarding because of the personal work and transformation that it forced me to do, including all kinds of psychedelic medicine which we’ll be talking about today. This is one hell of a story, and this is definitely the most personal interview I’ve ever given, so thank you for your support during this past year, and I’m incredibly grateful that I’m back to work so I can help you guys and serve you in any way that I can. Without further ado, let’s dive in… Resources: AnnShippyMD.com ChooseMuse.com Curable: How an Unlikely Group of Radical Innovators is Trying to Transform our Health Care System Music: Music by: Ascence Song: About You Licensed under a Creative Commons License

Ariel Garten co-founded Muse® as an expression of her background in neuroscience, psychotherapy, and art, along with her dedication to bringing easy-to-use and accessible tools for well-being to the masses. Ariel is also the co-host of “Untangle” podcast, where she interviews groundbreaking neuroscientists, psychologists and meditators to teach listeners about the brain, how it works and how to use it to its full potential. Ariel studied neuroscience at the University of Toronto and worked in labs at the Krembil Neuroscience Centre, researching Parkinson’s disease and hippocampal neurogenesis. Post graduation, she trained as a psychotherapist and had her own private practice as well a designing a clothing line that opened Toronto Fashion Week and has been sold across North America. It was her desire to understand the self from both scientific and artistic perspectives that led her to work with BCI technology in the lab of Dr. Steve Mann. There she recognized the opportunity to commercialize technology that would fundamentally disrupt multiple markets and soon co-founded Interaxon, makers of Muse®. The company debuted with the creation of “Bright Ideas,” Ontario’s feature showcase at the 2010 Winter Olympics, where visitors in Vancouver controlled the lights on the CN Tower, Niagara Falls, and the Canadian Parliament buildings with their minds from across the country. Ariel and the Muse® headband have been featured in global media, including CNBC, CNET, CNN, Forbes, Popular Science, TechCrunch, the Wall Street Journal and VentureBeat, which credited Ariel for creating “the most important wearable of 2014.” In addition to her full-time position at Muse®, Ariel keynotes around the world on technology, mindfulness and entrepreneurship and supports and advises a variety of start-ups. Ariel Garten (@ariel_garten) envisions a world where we can control computers with our minds. She's on the cutting edge of computer and brain interfaces with her creation, the Muse headband. Ariel sent me a headband a few months ago, and I've been using it to refine my meditation sessions. The headband gives me neurofeedback to help me identify a relaxed-focus mental state. So while I'm meditating, I get audio feedback that's an expression of my brain's activity. That audio feedback helps me adjust my meditation technique. The point of muse is to train your brain into focusing on one thing so you can build that skill and carry it over into other forms of meditation, as well as to have the mental awareness throughout the day to manage your attention and focus. I've experimented with EEG headsets before. I first bought one about seven years ago. The Muse absolutely blows away that experience. In addition to being useful for meditation, it is also a clinical-grade headset – used by neuroscientists everywhere – that measures all brainwaves as well as certain movements. In this conversation, we'll talk about: What mental cues can keep you in a meditative state? We'll talk about how mental cues differ from one form of meditation to another, and how those cues relate to what Muse measures. How do you develop a product with a new technology, when the application is unclear? Hear Ariel's story about how Muse started as a playful experiment, and evolved into a useful product. How do you follow disparate interests to an original idea. Ariel has a background in psychotherapy, fashion design, neuroscience (of course) – as well as having many other interests. How has that curiosity helped her arrive at an original idea, and how did she see past the naysayers who wanted her to focus on one thing? Muse is not a sponsor, but they have set up a special deal for our listeners. If you use the code LOVEYOURWORK at choosemuse.com, you'll get 15% off the Muse headset, or the new Muse 2. Ariel is the Founder of InteraXon, the makers of Muse: the brain sensing headband. She is also a neuroscientist, innovator, mother, and entrepreneur whose driving purpose is to empower and help others overcome mental obstacles in order to live healthy, happy lives and reach their maximum potential.   We’ve had Ariel on before talking about How to Overcome the Knots in your Head on Episode 45. Real tactical tips to overcome your obstacles and help change your mindset. I’ve received so much feedback on this episode that people have really liked the tactical exercises versus the theoretical stuff. In fact, one of our listeners shared it the episode with her teenage daughter and she was saying that it really built her confidence!   About Muse 2   Muse® 2 uses built-in biosignal, inertial, and heart sensors to create real-time audio experiences in four key areas to help users find focused calm, improve posture, and increase breath and heart awareness. With the companion app, Muse® 2 translates meditators’ internal states into immersive soundscapes to provide subtle guidance during meditation. Muse 1 gives you real time feedback on your brain during meditations. It is essentially the personal meditation system that fits in your head and gather data on when your mind is focused or when it wondered so that you can build a stronger meditation practice of data. Muse 2 teaches people that brain is amazing but meditation has a much greater gateway. Meditation is all about breathing, sitting, how your heart is moving, how your body is moving and then they built a sensor to each one of those facets just like what they did for the brain. The new headband also has a PPG sensor the tracks your heart rate so that you can get real-time feedback on your heart, it has sensors that will be able to track breathing so that you can see each inhalation and exhalation. It also has sensors that will be track your movements. From there they created this three beautiful experiences around heart, breath and body so that you can get real-time feedback around those  practice.   How Muse 2 Works   Muse 2 had the same factor as his predecessor Muse 1 which is a small little headband that fits in your head just like an eyeglass. The form factor is a little bit slimmer and along the way they have created a smart glasses that read EEG and through the process of building smart glasses that could read your brain they develop the EEG smaller so they can take that and incorporate it into the new Muse. The new Muse is smaller and lighter but it has more power and more sensors. They also added a PPG sensor next to the EEG sensors on your forehead that turns out to be more accurate than reading EEG on your wrist because reading your heart rate from your forehead is more reliable then your wrist. Just like the Apple wristband where a red light go through your skin to be able to see the blood flow at any moment so it sinks in real-time in your heartbeat. In that perspective, they develop the headband that translate your heart's activity into a beating of a drum so you can actually hear every single beat like a beating of a drum plus they paired that with real-time feedback with your breathe. When using your heart rate you can actually track each and every one of your breath and correlated it with your movement when you breathe in and out. Using these fusion of sensors, you can actually track each and every one of your breath in crisp real-time and then from there gives you guided reading exercises.   “The first sensation is never the right sensation” “When you practice meditation over time, the impact of your emotions is not as dramatic in your mind and your body”   Ariel also shared about Muse Facebook group community which allowed them to support each other and hold each other accountable during their meditation sessions, their struggles during meditations and finding their best practices.   “Give yourself time” “Turn of your inner critic”   About Muse® by Interaxon Inc.:   At Muse®, our team of neuroscientists, meditation teachers, and engineers develop state-of-the-art experiences using research grade EEG technology. Our goal is to help individuals build a rewarding meditation practice and live healthier, happier, more connected lives. Thoughts on Breathing I try to get out to the beach. I think nature, wherever you get it is really, really important. I find when I'm in nature by the water or in the earth, my breathing slows and I start to breathe along with the waves and it just changes me. Suggested Resources Book: Going to Pieces without Falling Apart: A Buddhist Perspective on Wholeness by Mark Epstein Book: Financial Alchemy: Twelve Months of Magic and Manifestation by Morgana Rae App: Choose Muse www.ChooseMuse.com Bullying Story I was the most hated girl in school in the third grade. I moved from the city in Los Angeles and Hollywood out to the suburbs. One was very diverse and a very, very different culture. We called grownups by their first name. It was just very different and then suddenly I'm in this very white bred suburb with different social rules that I didn't understand. So I was the girl everybody hated. I had no friends in school. There was one girl I would play with after school, but she would be the meanest girl at school. It was a life that has only gotten better since then. So I have this aspect of myself that I call my inner fat girl because I was chubby at the time, so people called me fat stuff like I wasn't even a person. It was so dehumanizing and I still have this aspect of my personality that comes out when I'm feeling in a social situation, not good enough, not pretty enough, not popular enough. Like there's something really wrong with me and I have so much love for this part of me fat girl, because a, she needs love more than maybe any other part of me. And I think she's also the most loving because that part of me that feels like the unacceptable ugly outcast who doesn't deserve to exist, recognizes, understands, loves and desires to provide safety for everybody else's inner fat girl that feels like the unsafe outcast who doesn't deserve to exist. So my mindfulness is to take that experience and kind of turn it into gold through service, by bringing love first to that part of myself and really, truly loving her contribution. There's a temptation when we're being abused and feeling the abuse, especially if we're empathic and we're feeling the anger and the rage. It's very tempting either to lash out at the people who are attacking us or even more tempting to lash out at ourselves and hurt ourselves and join the abusers. When we can pause and love the parts of us that we have the most trouble with; maybe you call it the saboteur or the bully. You know, I talked about my fat girl. Each of them is on our team. Each of them has wisdom, and when we can really embrace and love that part of us, it gives us a super power. It gives us the super power of empathy. When I love my inner fat girl, the part of me that feels hated and ugly and lonesome and doesn't deserve to exist and lonely, then I can see and understand and love everybody else's part that feels those ways and then it gives me sort of a super power to heal that pain and that changes the dynamic. I became a coach. Really, truly. I quit acting and became a coach because I was doing it as a hobby and I liked myself better. I liked the relationships better. I was happier. So honestly I became a coach. Totally for selfish reasons because I found it easier to be happy helping other people. Free Gift Do you want to become more calm, relaxed, peaceful, and content? Chris holds a masters in engineering and computer science from the University of Toronto. Contact Info Website: www.ChooseMuse.com Most Influential Person My Mother. Effect on Emotions I would say I'm a much happier person now as a result of being introduced to mindfulness. I think this really comes from understanding myself that much better and understanding how to live in a way where I don't have as much conflict with myself. [Mindfulness has given me] the capacity to really understand how other people are experiencing things. This makes for a much more frictionless flow in life. It feels great. Thoughts on Breathing The breath is fascinating. I've recently played more with intentional breath work where breath is sort of an energetic tool to influence your nervous system. In my mindfulness practice, just recognizing that there is an automatic function of your breathing and a conscious aspect of breathing and simply watching your breath really isn't so easy. There is a really amazing rabbit hole there just to discover what it's like to try to simply observe the breath and not influence it. It's a beautiful biofeedback tool. And so Muse is a biofeedback tool, but actually, the practice of meditation is like deep biofeedback at work because of the things that we use to anchor our attention. Suggested Resources Book: Wake Up To Your Life by Ken Macleod App: Social Media like Instagram Bullying Story Like I said in the beginning, mindfulness for me is all about awareness and a big part of that is self-awareness. I think for an individual who might be a bully, for example, growing some deeper self-awareness, really provides an opportunity to understand what's happening and how your actions are being received. [Also], what those actions are and what they're related to in your own emotional experience. I think being aware of something is the first step in change. If you can't see what's happening there can be no interest in being any different. Seeing what's happening provides an opportunity to become interested and motivated to do things differently. That in itself doesn't allow you to change necessarily, but it certainly can make you aware of what's happening. So I think that's a really important first step is just expanding some inner awareness. You can actually see what's happening emotionally and how it's manifesting in action, even as a retrospective. So I think doing any kind of inner practice, you know, out of context where you're just with yourself can be perhaps simple enough. The things that come up in meditation seem to be better received and you can hear them more clearly. And so that's the really great first step in that someone who is being bullied, it's both an inner and an outer awareness that comes into play. Free Gift Thinking of launching your own podcast? There are five waves commonly observed in the brain: Alpha, Beta, Delta, Gamma and Theta. 2. These waves can be measured at anywhere from ½ Hz up to 100 Hz 3. MUSE™ matches form with function, an attractive accessory designed to accurately measure EEG. 4. Due to the sensitivity of what's being measured, the MUSE™ must be used in a calm, inactive environment. 5. HRV and EEG are correlated, but there is no causal relationship at this time. 6. _Everyone_ has a “voice” in their head; managing that voice is key to becoming effective. 7. Remember the “voice” in your head is more like a demon…the truth is you do not need it. ** ** **Resources Mentioned:** - [Let's Talk When You're Free](http://chrisguillebeau.com/re-lets-talk-when-youre-free/) – An Article by Chris Guillebeau discussing the misnomer of “free-time” - [PriceJump](http://www.savings.com/pricejump#less+doing+more+living) – A website that will show you a comparison of prices across online stores _and_brick & mortar stores - [Gigster](http://www.trygigster.com/) – Pre-vetted, high-quality developer outsourcing - [Vyte.in](https://www.vyte.in/?utm_content=buffer7b270&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer) – This a personal assistant, meeting scheduling service - [GigSky](https://www.gigsky.com/en/) – An international mobile data service designed to let people access data on the go at local rates - [Is College Worth the Cost?](http://us.cnn.com/2014/11/19/opinion/ivory-tower-andrew-rossi-higher-education-cost/index.html?sr=sharebar_twitter) – An article by Andrew Rossi discussing the prevalence of the student-loan/debt problem ** ** **Reviews, Comments and Questions:** - 1:50 – iTunes Review from _DefeatTheDrama_ – “This podcast is filled with great guests and valuable information.
