We all understand that meditation is beneficial to our overall well-being, but it isn't always easy to do. Stress can have a damaging effect on our body and mind, but fortunately, we can reduce its impact through meditation. Although it can be challenging to start meditating, just like building any muscle in the body, consistent practice will help strengthen the skill over time. With meditation, you'll be able to manage your thoughts more effectively and better respond emotionally to life's stressful situations. Making meditation a habit can positively affect your life. To build the practice, start by choosing the easiest days and times for you to meditate regularly. Consider doing it in the morning, during lunch break, or in the evening, and always try to do it at the same time each day. Don't worry about picking the ideal time; just pick a consistent time that works for you and stick with it. If it is difficult to calm your mind, Ariel Garten, the co-founder of Muse, a brain-sensing headband, shares how we can use brain wave technology to monitor when our brains are calm or when it is active. She helped to invent the Muse that you can use it at home to assist you with attaining that calm brain wave state. Want to check out the Muse or give it a try? During the past two years, consumers have signed up for health apps and wearable technology, like FitBits or Apple Watches, in record numbers. Everybody is looking for something—anything—to help calm their minds, sleep better, or boost productivity. Meanwhile, a new generation of entrepreneurs is taking wearable health technology a step further to solve some of society's biggest neurological challenges—including depression and traumatic brain injury—as well as find ways to enhance our quality of life.In this episode of Disruptors, an RBC podcast, co-host Trinh Theresa Do tackles the recent explosion of neurotechnology in Canada with her guest Derek Luke, CEO of InteraXon. InteraXon is the maker of Muse, a popular EEG-powered headband that senses brain activity through meditation exercises and provides real-time feedback to users' phones or tablets. The idea is a simple but powerful one: by leveraging neurotechnology, consumers can find meaningful ways to live a healthier, happier life. But this technology is not without its limitations, as Derek and Theresa discuss. There are important privacy considerations in handling sensitive data—and ethical considerations with more intrusive forms of neurotech. Still, there's little doubt that as brain-computer interfaces and headsets like Muse's grow in popularity, the era of superhuman cognition may be just around the corner.EPISODE NOTES:To learn more about Muse and its brain-sensing headband, follow this link. In the episode, Derek talks about some of the ways in which Muse and its EEG technology is being used in research. Now, she is the Founder and Chief Evangelist Officer at Muse (The Brain Sensing Headband by Interaxon) where she has designed meaningful and transformational experiences, ranging from a levitating chair to a thought-controlled beer tap! Fear is just a feeling and something that I won't allow to rule over me." - Ariel Garten What Meditators Can Learn About Their Emotions "As a meditator, what you learn is that emotional experiences rise and they move. So, for a non-meditator, an emotional experience can feel very overwhelming and thus they try to not have emotional experiences because they don't want to be overwhelmed by them. As a meditator, what you learn is to sit with the physiological experience of a feeling without creating a dialogue around it." - Ariel Garten Facing Fear Head On "When I made myself do the things that I was afraid of and felt the fear that was associated with it, I realized that I was fine once that emotion washed over me. Fear is just a feeling and it has no power of you. If you want to break through the fear, you can. Ultimately, I believe all of us want to do just that - to break through the fear of our lives. When you start to do it, you realize that it's really not scary at all; we've just built up a bunch of stories around it that made it feel scary." - Ariel Garten Links From Today's Show Ariel Garten 011 Beyond Meditation: How To Get A Better Brain With Ariel Garten Organifi 235 Drew Canole Awakened Futures Summit Leave Wellness Force a review Rumi 302 Mark Groves Attached by Amir Levine and Rachel Heller How to Change Your Mind by Michael Pollan NCBI PubMed - Meditation leads to reduced default mode network activity beyond an active task. 292 Pavel Stuchlik 290 Dan Brulé Research Projects Involving Muse A Study of a Mindfulness-Based Intervention with a Wearable Wellness Brain Sensing Device in Newly Diagnosed Breast Cancer Patients Undergoing Surgery Jordan Peterson Women && Tech - Ariel Garten Exponential Medicine - Ariel Garten Untangle Podcast - Ariel Garten: Your Brain On Meditation Michael Pollan | Dissolving the Default Mode Network Know Your Brain: Default Mode Network The meaning of freedom | Ariel Garten | TEDxGatewayWomen Ariel Garten Facebook Instagram Twitter Muse Facebook Instagram Twitter YouTube About Ariel Garten Ariel Garten is a neuroscientist, innovator, and entrepreneur whose driving purpose is to empower and help others overcome mental obstacles in order to live healthy, happy lives and reach their maximum potential. Join in for a conversation with Graeme Moffat, Chief Scientist and VP of Regulatory Affairs at Interaxon. Interaxon is a neurotech company based out of Toronto. They are the creators of the Muse headband where it uses technology and neuroscience to help you meditate effectively, one of the world-leading companies making this happen. Graham earned his PhD in neuroscience at Universite Aix-Marseille in France but he had his sights set on joining the private sector during his early neuroscience education at McMaster university. He was bit by the startup bug whilst building the largest neuroscience publication platform in Switzerland and that led him to become the Chief Scientist at Meta, a NeuroTech company that got acquired by the Chan-Zuckerburg Foundation, and later to become the Chief Scientist at Interaxon. In our chat we cover Graham's fascinating global journey as a neuroscientist, the academic world, the childhood that started his fascination with the human brain and much more. I should also add that I selfishly wanted to learn more about neuroscience and meditation so we also geek out about all of that in the episode as well!

Ariel Garten is probably one of the most interesting people you will meet. She is a psychotherapist, Neuroscientist, mom, former fashion designer, and the female founder and visionary of an amazing and highly successful tech start-up Muse. Muse tracks your brain during meditation to give you real-time feedback on your meditation, guiding you into the "zone" and solving the problem most of us have when starting a meditation practice- letting you know when you are doing it right. When she is not reading brains (literally) or investing in, inspiring and advising other start-ups and women in biz, you can find her on stages across the world, from TED to MIT to SXSW, inspiring people to understand that they can accomplish anything they want by learning what goes on in their own mind. “there is nothing to fear but fear itself. Really, we are so held back by the thoughts that we have in our head, by the voices that try to warn us of things that we don't actually need to be afraid of, by the fear that we create ourselves. And if you move that fear out of the way, if you move those voices out of the way you can really accomplish and do anything you want in the world. You don't need to have the skills and capabilities; you can just hire people who are good at it; funding there is lots of sources to find it these days. You can really accomplish anything that you put your mind to”…[Listen for More] Click Here for Show Notes To Listen or to Get the Show Notes go to https://wp.me/p6Tf4b-782

Ariel is the Founder of InteraXon, the makers of Muse: the brain sensing headband. She is also a neuroscientist, innovator, mother, and entrepreneur whose driving purpose is to empower and help others overcome mental obstacles in order to live healthy, happy lives and reach their maximum potential. We’ve had Ariel on before talking about How to Overcome the Knots in your Head on Episode 45. Real tactical tips to overcome your obstacles and help change your mindset. I’ve received so much feedback on this episode that people have really liked the tactical exercises versus the theoretical stuff. In fact, one of our listeners shared it the episode with her teenage daughter and she was saying that it really built her confidence! About Muse 2 Muse® 2 uses built-in biosignal, inertial, and heart sensors to create real-time audio experiences in four key areas to help users find focused calm, improve posture, and increase breath and heart awareness. With the companion app, Muse® 2 translates meditators’ internal states into immersive soundscapes to provide subtle guidance during meditation. Muse 1 gives you real time feedback on your brain during meditations. It is essentially the personal meditation system that fits in your head and gather data on when your mind is focused or when it wondered so that you can build a stronger meditation practice of data. Muse 2 teaches people that brain is amazing but meditation has a much greater gateway. Meditation is all about breathing, sitting, how your heart is moving, how your body is moving and then they built a sensor to each one of those facets just like what they did for the brain. The new headband also has a PPG sensor the tracks your heart rate so that you can get real-time feedback on your heart, it has sensors that will be able to track breathing so that you can see each inhalation and exhalation. It also has sensors that will be track your movements. From there they created this three beautiful experiences around heart, breath and body so that you can get real-time feedback around those practice. How Muse 2 Works Muse 2 had the same factor as his predecessor Muse 1 which is a small little headband that fits in your head just like an eyeglass. The form factor is a little bit slimmer and along the way they have created a smart glasses that read EEG and through the process of building smart glasses that could read your brain they develop the EEG smaller so they can take that and incorporate it into the new Muse. The new Muse is smaller and lighter but it has more power and more sensors. They also added a PPG sensor next to the EEG sensors on your forehead that turns out to be more accurate than reading EEG on your wrist because reading your heart rate from your forehead is more reliable then your wrist. Just like the Apple wristband where a red light go through your skin to be able to see the blood flow at any moment so it sinks in real-time in your heartbeat. In that perspective, they develop the headband that translate your heart's activity into a beating of a drum so you can actually hear every single beat like a beating of a drum plus they paired that with real-time feedback with your breathe. When using your heart rate you can actually track each and every one of your breath and correlated it with your movement when you breathe in and out. Using these fusion of sensors, you can actually track each and every one of your breath in crisp real-time and then from there gives you guided reading exercises. “The first sensation is never the right sensation” “When you practice meditation over time, the impact of your emotions is not as dramatic in your mind and your body” Ariel also shared about Muse Facebook group community which allowed them to support each other and hold each other accountable during their meditation sessions, their struggles during meditations and finding their best practices. “Give yourself time” “Turn of your inner critic” About Muse® by Interaxon Inc.: At Muse®, our team of neuroscientists, meditation teachers, and engineers develop state-of-the-art experiences using research grade EEG technology. Our goal is to help individuals build a rewarding meditation practice and live healthier, happier, more connected lives. Greetings, SuperFriends! This week's episode is a really interesting one, which I'm so happy we did! We are joined by Ariel Garten, a neuroscientist, an innovator, a mother, and an entrepreneur, whose driving purpose is to empower and help others overcome mental obstacles in order to live healthy, happy lives and reach their maximum potential. What is probably most known about Ariel, is that she is the founder of InteraXon, the makers of the wildly popular device Muse, which is also known as the brain-sensing headband. But, what I didn't realize, is that behind Muse's award-winning wearable technology, there is a lot of neuroscience. In fact, Ariel herself was a neuroscientific researcher. So, you can just imagine how much we geeked out about the brain, about learning, about health, and about optimizing our lives. You will immediately see why Ariel has been so successful, and you'll be fascinated to go into a side of meditation that we've not covered before, which is the science behind it. How does it actually work, what is going on in your brain and why should everybody, even those of you that think "well, I just can't meditate", be meditating. It's a wonderful episode, which I know you folks are really going to enjoy! -Jonathan Levi
Have you ever thought about meditation as something only level 5000 yoga instructors or Buddhist monks practice? Today's guest, Ariel Garten (@ariels_musings), is here to enlighten us all about not just best practices when it comes to meditation but also the true science behind what goes in our brain and the myriad of benefits it can bring our everyday lives! Ariel is a co-founder of Muse: the brain sensing headband. Muse is the award-winning headband that makes meditation easier. During guided exercises, Muse senses your brain activity and sends that information to your phone or tablet, giving you real time audio feedback to help take the guesswork out of meditation. Ariel studied neuroscience at the University of Toronto and worked in labs at Toronto’s Krembil Neuroscience Centre researching Parkinson’s disease and hippocampal neurogenesis. No mere science nerd, Ariel is a fashion designer whose clothing opened Toronto Fashion Week in '03, and has had her work displayed at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Ariel’s uncommon combination of science and art is integral to the design of Muse and to InteraXon’s unique approach to brain sensing technology. Ariel was also a therapist in private practice. Ariel and her team are merging technology, neuroscience, art and design. As well as her full time position at Muse, Ariel keynotes around the world on technology, mindfulness and entrepreneurship and supports and advises a variety of start-ups. Can thought-power control the world outside our heads? Thanks to new brain-machine interface technology, the answer is yes. But the real question is whether it can it help us control the world inside our heads. In the Season 3 opener of Soonish we meet Ariel Garten, co-founder of Interaxon, a Canadian startup that’s one of the first to offer a consumer neurofeedback device. Interaxon’s Muse headband reads brainwaves to help people with the sometimes vexing task of meditation. It points toward an era when may be able to control our brain states and share our thoughts directly with our computers, and with each other. And there are startling implications—not just for our capabilities as humans, but also for our privacy and individuality. Featured guests: Ariel Garten, Sam Langer, Mary Lou Jepsen. This week we welcome Ariel Garten to the show. Ariel Garten is the CEO and co-founder of InteraXon, which creates thought controlled computing products and applications. Ariel has also researched at the Krembil Neuroscience Institute studying hippocampal neurogenesis, displayed work at the Art Gallery of Ontario, been head designer at a fashion label, and opened Toronto Fashion Week. Referred to as the “Brain Guru”, Ariel and her team’s work has been featured in hundreds of articles in over 20 countries. Questions we ask in this episode: Please explain the process of meditating with Muse? What diet/supplements are useful in enhancing our brains capability? How important do you think a positive mindset is for overall health? This week I'm excited to welcome Ariel Garten. Ariel is an artist, scientist, entrepreneur and CEO of InteraXon, a company specialized in thought controlled computing. In this episode we discuss Muse, the brain sensing headband. Muse is a wearable device that sits on your head and tracks your brain activity in real time, which brings the practice of meditation into a whole new light. We chat about how meditation can impact our overall health, and discuss the tools, tips, supplements and strategies that can help us get the most from our meditation sessions. 01:18 I like so many of us personally struggle with meditation, but it looks like Muse could be a real game changer in this space. Enough from me. Over to Ariel. Hey, guys. This is Stu from 180 Nutrition, and I am delighted to welcome Ariel Garten to the show. Good morning, Ariel, how are you? Although I say good morning, so it's probably not good morning for you, is it? Ariel 01:44 I'm in Canada. It is nighttime here, so good evening, good night to everybody in this side of the hemisphere, and good morning to you Stu 01:52 Thank you very much. First up, for everybody that may not be familiar with you and your work, I'd love it if you could just tell our listeners a little bit about who you are, what you do and perhaps why you do it as well. Ariel 02:03 Sure. My name is Ariel and I'm the founder of a company called Muse. We make a device that is a brain sensing headband that helps you meditate, gives you real-time feedback on your meditation so that you can know when you're in the zone and when your mind is wandering. Yes. Stu 02:21 I was just literally going to jump in there with the meditation aspect as well. Ariel 02:29 Jump. 02:30 Jump straight in. I was just telling you before that I really struggle with meditation, and after running a podcast for almost five years the take home for me from a lot of the world experts are that meditation is so critically, or it is so critical for overall health in terms of switching off all of the noise. Stu 02:52 I liken my own personal journey with meditation as to perhaps standing outside a shop and sells televisions, and in the window of the shop there are 100 different screens. Each screen is showing something quite different. That's how my mind is. I'm thinking about this while looking at that, and there's something else happening up here. I've through Headspace, a billion different meditation apps, tried transcendental, tried many different practices and I really struggle with it. 03:21 Very, very interested in Muse and you sharing what Muse is in terms of a tech perspective with our audience, because I'm thinking that it might open up a whole different way of approaching meditation. Ariel 03:34 What you described is essentially why we built Muse. Everybody knows meditation is fantastic for you, but frankly it's very hard to do. You can sit there even if you're guided by an app and your mind is still wandering all over the place. For some people that can be really scary. You're sitting there. Your mind is supposed to be blank, you imagine, even though that's not what meditation is, and it's bouncing all over the place. You say, "Oh, jeez. I'm not good at this. This is not for me." You end up feeling worse about yourself and not meditating. 04:02 We wanted to build a tool that literally would hold your hand while you meditate and let you hear in real time what was going on inside your mind and guide you and show you what it is that you're supposed to be doing, and reinforce you when you do it right. Stu: 04:16 Sounds like a very useful piece of kit. How does the process work? 04:23 You slip on this little device. This is your Muse. It slips on just like a pair of glasses like this, and it tracks your meditation in real time. There are sensors, two sensors on the forehead and two behind the ears. These are actually clinical-grade EEG sensors. They're actually tracking your brain's brainwave activity in real time. It then sends that data to your smart phone or tablet, which interprets the data and lets you hear the sound of your own brain. 04:52 The metaphor we use is your mind is like the weather. When you're thinking, distracted, it's bouncing all over the place, you hear it is stormy. As you bring yourself to quiet, focused attention it actually quiets the storm. Most people think that meditation is just the idea of letting your mind go blank. It's not. Meditation is actually mental training, and the most basic form of meditation is focused attention meditation. In that you are focusing your attention on your breath or on a neutral object. 05:20 How you do it is you focus your attention on your breath. Your mind wanders. You notice it wanders and then you bring it back to your breath. In doing so you're able to train and maintain your attention. Now, what happens for most of us is our mind wanders, it continues to wander, and then we catch, and, "Oh, right. We're supposed to bring it back." 05:39 This act of noticing it's wandered and bringing it back is like doing your bench press rep at the gym. That's the rep of meditation, noticing it, bringing it back. In a regular meditation you might be wandering one, three, five minutes before you notice and bring it back. With Muse, it cues you instantly. You instantly bring it back, so you can literally get in many times more reps at the gym. You really are honed in that practice of noticing and returning. Effect on Emotions I would say I'm a much happier person now as a result of being introduced to mindfulness. I think this really comes from understanding myself that much better and understanding how to live in a way where I don't have as much conflict with myself. [Mindfulness has given me] the capacity to really understand how other people are experiencing things. This makes for a much more frictionless flow in life. It feels great. Thoughts on Breathing The breath is fascinating. I've recently played more with intentional breath work where breath is sort of an energetic tool to influence your nervous system. In my mindfulness practice, just recognizing that there is an automatic function of your breathing and a conscious aspect of breathing and simply watching your breath really isn't so easy. There is a really amazing rabbit hole there just to discover what it's like to try to simply observe the breath and not influence it. It's a beautiful biofeedback tool. And so Muse is a biofeedback tool, but actually, the practice of meditation is like deep biofeedback at work because of the things that we use to anchor our attention. Suggested Resources Book: Wake Up To Your Life by Ken Macleod App: Social Media like Instagram Bullying Story Like I said in the beginning, mindfulness for me is all about awareness and a big part of that is self-awareness. I think for an individual who might be a bully, for example, growing some deeper self-awareness, really provides an opportunity to understand what's happening and how your actions are being received. [Also], what those actions are and what they're related to in your own emotional experience. I think being aware of something is the first step in change. If you can't see what's happening there can be no interest in being any different. Seeing what's happening provides an opportunity to become interested and motivated to do things differently. That in itself doesn't allow you to change necessarily, but it certainly can make you aware of what's happening. So I think that's a really important first step is just expanding some inner awareness. You can actually see what's happening emotionally and how it's manifesting in action, even as a retrospective. So I think doing any kind of inner practice, you know, out of context where you're just with yourself can be perhaps simple enough. The things that come up in meditation seem to be better received and you can hear them more clearly. And so that's the really great first step in that someone who is being bullied, it's both an inner and an outer awareness that comes into play. Free Gift Thinking of launching your own podcast? She's a Nobel Prize winning scientist and she actually talks about and this sounds [Inaudible] which is why reference at this is a Nobel Prize winning scientist and this is her Nobel Prize. In that voice and so her work talks about the fact that negative thoughts actually lead to cellular aging. So, when we have a negative perception of the world in a negative sort of viewpoint what ends up happening is we create cellular stress in one of the ways that you measure the cellular stress is the length of your telomeres. So telomeres are kind of like the shoelaces the little plastic knobs on the end of our DNA. They're there to protect the DNA. When your cells are in a state of cellular stress those little telomeres those names decrease in size and see your DNA is much more readily subjective subjected to a damage through reproduction or through general copying. So when we meditate [Inaudible] work shows that meditators actually have increased length of their telomeres so their processes of cellular aging have actually been slowed.

There are five waves commonly observed in the brain: Alpha, Beta, Delta, Gamma and Theta. 2. These waves can be measured at anywhere from ½ Hz up to 100 Hz 3. MUSE™ matches form with function, an attractive accessory designed to accurately measure EEG. 4. Due to the sensitivity of what's being measured, the MUSE™ must be used in a calm, inactive environment. 5. HRV and EEG are correlated, but there is no causal relationship at this time. 6. _Everyone_ has a “voice” in their head; managing that voice is key to becoming effective. 7. Remember the “voice” in your head is more like a demon…the truth is you do not need it. ** ** **Resources Mentioned:** - [Let's Talk When You're Free](http://chrisguillebeau.com/re-lets-talk-when-youre-free/) – An Article by Chris Guillebeau discussing the misnomer of “free-time” - [PriceJump](http://www.savings.com/pricejump#less+doing+more+living) – A website that will show you a comparison of prices across online stores _and_brick & mortar stores - [Gigster](http://www.trygigster.com/) – Pre-vetted, high-quality developer outsourcing - [Vyte.in](https://www.vyte.in/?utm_content=buffer7b270&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer) – This a personal assistant, meeting scheduling service - [GigSky](https://www.gigsky.com/en/) – An international mobile data service designed to let people access data on the go at local rates - [Is College Worth the Cost?](http://us.cnn.com/2014/11/19/opinion/ivory-tower-andrew-rossi-higher-education-cost/index.html?sr=sharebar_twitter) – An article by Andrew Rossi discussing the prevalence of the student-loan/debt problem ** ** **Reviews, Comments and Questions:** - 1:50 – iTunes Review from _DefeatTheDrama_ – “This podcast is filled with great guests and valuable information.
