I just really wish you the very best, Mindful Tribe. I wish that you feel this amazing feeling in your life of calm focus, and happiness. And that's because way back in 2015, when I started the Mindfulness Mode Podcast, one of my goals was that through mindfulness, I would be able to help you, my listener, learn how to experience calm, focus, and happiness. And that's why I chose that as my tagline; reach new heights of calm focus and happiness. I've been learning the subtle details of mindfulness along with you, Mindful Tribe. I've been learning from all my fantastic guests, and I've learned that it's important to understand about our emotions. That we have to live with our emotions, and to welcome and open to our emotions. That's pretty much where it all starts. Understanding that when we suppress our emotions, that's not a good thing. It's not healthy to suppress your emotions, push them away, do things so that we can just ignore them pretend they're not there. That's certainly something I've done a lot in my life. I've learned from my guests that many people push away their emotions. Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify A Book Being grateful is an important part of my life. Is this important to you, Mindful Tribe? It's great when you can truly allow yourself to appreciate whatever is in your life. a book called, ‘Letting Go; The Pathway of Surrender', by David R. Hawkins. What a great book. A number of guests on my show have recommended David Hawkins. This is only one of the books in the series, and I'm absolutely enjoying it. One of my favorite books, which has to do with letting go is called ‘The Surrender Experiment', by Michael A Singer. Quite a few of my guests have suggested this book as well. This book is written like a novel and each chapter ends with a cliffhanger and it's very much an easy-read. It's about the how the author makes a decision early in his life, to simply let go; he makes this decision that he's going to lead his life by letting go and letting things unfold naturally, and basically to say yes, to whatever presents itself. And he decides to meditate a lot and have meditation as a central part of his life and use meditation as a way that he will deal with most aspects of his life. And it's really fascinating how things turn out. So if you haven't read this, I would recommend it. A Wish My holiday wish for you is that you are able to notice and embrace your emotions, whatever they are. Some of our emotions, of course, can be very painful. The emotions of fear, anger, and bereavement, you know, if you've lost a loved one in your life, I truly feel for you. It's really important to embrace these emotions. Also, besides learning to embrace the emotions, my holiday wish for you is that you would be able to genuinely ask yourself, these three questions. And the three questions can make a massive difference in your life as to how you process your emotions, and whether you actually do process your emotions. Hold a Pen Before I tell you what the three questions are, I just want to say that, one of the things I've learned is that the most effective and most life changing things that I've learned in my life have been the simplest. As humans, we tend to over complicate things, we tend to think that for something to be effective, and really worthwhile. It has to be something that either costs a lot of money or takes a lot of time to learn, or is just very difficult to comprehend it. Well, actually, I think in some ways, the opposite is true. Sometimes some of these things are very, very simple. And the person who teaches this process of focusing on these three questions, suggests you pick up a pen and hold it. He says, just hold the pen loosely. Then he says okay, release it and drop it. Easier Than You Think That's how easy it actually is to let go of your emotion that's holding you back. Simply let go of what's bothering you. This method is taken from the Sedona Method, and that's at sedona.com. This is something that I learned from Hale Dwoskin, the man who teaches the Sedona Method. I interviewed Hale Dwoskin back in July of 2020. The episode was # 570. So you can go to MindfulnessMode.com/570, and you can hear Hale on that episode. He is a New York Times bestselling author of ‘The Sedona Method', and he's featured in a movie called Letting Go. You'll learn more about him if you listen to that episode. This method called The Sedona Method was invented first by Lester Levinson and he wrote a book called, Happiness is Free and It's Easier Than You Think. This is a five book series. The teachings boil down to three questions. What Bothers You? Think to yourself, is there a situation in your life that really irritates you, that really bothers you. Do you realize that you're thinking about this a lot? Maybe there's a person in your life, that that really rubs you the wrong way? Or maybe someone at work irritates you? Maybe you think about this person a lot and you wish that they weren't in your life. Start with this focus of, what is this thing that is bothering you? Listen to the episode to hear the three questions. Finding Peace So I encourage you to just consider these three questions. And in my opinion, that's a holiday gift is to help you understand that peace, for all of us can lie in the answers to these three questions. Calm focus, and happiness can be achieved by answering these three questions. Calm focus and happiness can also be achieved in other ways, too. I mean, there are a number of ways you can find peace in your life. Self-hypnosis is one of the tools that has really worked for me and made a big difference. The thing about hypnosis is that it works for nearly every issue. Hypnosis is incredible. I am so fortunate to be a trained hypnotist so I can help other people. But I can help myself, I can do self hypnosis, and understand that hypnosis works for almost anything that is holding you back or causing you angst, whether you're not sleeping well. Whether you have a lot of fear, you have a bad habit that you just really want to release, you want to let go of it? Well, Self Hypnosis will help you do that. And maybe it's trauma or pain or motivation, you know, you just can't get motivated for something. Well, hypnosis can help. 27 Ways? My hypnosis teacher Erica Flint taught me that hypnosis can help with almost every issue (Erica on Mindfulness Mode). Maybe you've tried 27 ways to quit smoking, and then the 28th way was hypnosis, and that worked for you. Well, hypnosis works for many people, including me. When so many other things didn't work, no matter what you've tried already, hypnosis can be the answer you're looking for. So I have been very grateful to have worked with quite a few different clients throughout 2021 and we've met with success. Suggested Resources Book: Letting Go: The Pathway of Surrender by Daniel R. JV Crum III Interviews Bruce Langford on how to use mindfulness to discover your true purpose in life. Bruce explains his TIME acronym and how it relates to finding your purpose in life using mindfulness and meditation. Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify Contact Info Website: www.consciousmillionaire.com Website: www.MindfulnessMode.com Podcast: Conscious Millionaire Podcast Book: Conscious Millionaire by JV Crum III (Free Download) Meaning of Mindfulness To You I define mindfulness as living in the moment and thinking in the moment. If I'm focusing on the past I know that is going to pull me away from my purpose and from the focus that I really need to have. If I'm worrying about the future and what might be coming up tomorrow, or even in a few minutes, then that's pulling me away from the present moment and from being a mindful person. To me, being mindful is living in the moment and also not being judgmental. It's so easy for us as humans to be judgmental of other people and of other situations. It is really a natural part of being human. But when I do that, I notice it and I pull myself back from it. Your First Thoughts About Purpose When I was around 11 years old I started thinking of time passing, the importance of time, and what that meant. What was that concept of time? I remember so clearly that I would spend time reflecting on what certain things meant in the world. And that's one of the reasons why I use the TIME acronym. Time has everything to do with mindfulness, of course. Thoughts About Your Purpose Throughout my life I have had a dream where I'm leaving my body and I'm rising up and looking down and seeing myself down there on earth. I'm looking at myself from this incredible position way up in the universe. That is what gave me the perspective that I'm here for a reason. That reason is to help other people find their purpose and to use aspects of mindfulness to do that, to help them understand how they can do the work, how they can reach out to others because of that TIME acronym. Learn from authors, learn from speakers, learn from friends, surround yourself with like-minded people. And as you're moving on your journey in life, you will understand more of what your purpose really is from other people who are looking for similar answers. The TIME Acronym The T is about together. And I think for too much of my life, I felt like I had to do it myself. That was a real learning step for me. And so I teach other people that you can do this together with other like-minded people. The I is Inner work. You must do the inner work. You need to write, you need to explore those thoughts that are running through your mind. You need to give yourself the time and space to really understand what's important in life. A lot of times we don't spend enough time in nature and that will help us get clear on our goal and life's direction and understand what our true purpose is because it's not going to come all at once. A lot of it comes to me through writing. So that inner work is incredibly important. M is meditation. I feel like everybody meditates in their own way. You might have been taught formally. You might do TM, transcendental meditation. Meditation is a huge part of this picture. And you can use an app like the calm app that will help you learn how to meditate. There's Insight Timer where you can get yourself a meditation teacher right there on the app. You need to start. You need to take action. Maybe you've never meditated, or maybe you have meditated sporadically, but I really feel it's important to meditate on a regular basis. Make it part of your routine, part of your habit, make meditation a part of your life. That is just so integral to what you do and how you think. E is Exercise. Move your body. Make sure that you're not stagnant. Make sure to move every day. Your body is created to move and some of your biggest revelations will come to you when you move. Your brain starts to operate differently when you move. What emotions do I actually want to experience? If I'm going to go golfing, what emotions to I want at play? Do I want to be playful, serious, competitive? I chose my emotions before I go out. When I don't chose my emotions, I'm reactionary. When I go into a meeting I chose my emotions ahead of time, like, I'm going to be direct, or forthcoming, or conciliatory. So I do my best to chose my emotions off a menu before an event. Thoughts on Breathing Through yoga, there's always breathing through the nose and out. Through my meditation practice I learned ways to breathe. I've done some work with Wim Hof and learned about increasing the oxygenation to the cells. I also recently did some work with Dr. Amy who taught me how to breathe again through my belly. She said, ‘honey, that wasn't a tough meeting, you just got gang-banged'. They were really out to get blood. They had this calculated. The biggest thing I've learned is to slow down. Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify Contact Info Website: www.Fortlog.co Most Influential Person My wife Effect on Emotions When it comes to dealing with people in crisis, it's pretty simple for me to come in as some distant professional, and sometimes that means to show no emotion. My journey has taught me that sometimes that's the worst thing to show as a professional. Sometimes things just stink and there's nothing we can do. I still remember doing a death notification of a woman, her son was in college, an only child and her husband had died in the country that she had come from. She was telling me about her son. All I could think of was, this poor woman. And I can remember tearing up and part of my journey is, big boys don't cry. My heart really ached for her. It allowed me to be with her. And it was a newspaper article, a couple of weeks later, that I cut out and gave to my wife because in the newspaper there was a thank you and it was written on the worst day of my life. I spent the early morning hours with an angel. My wife didn't believe it was me at first, but when I connected who that person was with her on the worst day of her life. What did I learn about mindfulness and about being present, about not being cognitive but not being a jellyfish just to own what I'm really experiencing and then addressing my mindset to say, I can't fix this, so I am going to be with her and just hear her stories. This is where mindfulness can be a very subjective definition. For me, mindfulness allows me to be present in that moment with that mindset that says, what is the best thing that I can do right now to help. Thoughts on Breathing Here's where my dark humour gets me into problems. Do not start smoking. However, I teach deep breathing from the smoking perspective because smokers do three things that we have to learn: 1. they take a break, 2. they are outside with social support, and 3. they're doing deep breathing exercises. A smoker who might be really stressed as they are exhaling will blow rings. That even slows the exhale down more. The smoke break principle is the triangle model: inhale for 5, hold for 5, exhale for 5. Suggested Resources Book: n/a App: www.MindfulnessMode.com Bullying Story I sucked my thumb till I was seventeen. I quit during the summer when I was a junior forest ranger up in northern Ontario. I was bullied for sucking my thumb to the point where the school would call my parents and say that if I didn't stop sucking my thumb, I would be bullied more. Having sucked my thumb for that long, I believe that it prepared me to deal with opposition in a way that doesn't always beat me down. I don't fear them, I feel them. And I let them pass through. And I have learned to give myself that space and that grace to not always have to feel wonderful. Perfection is only a perception and it's usually not rooted in reality. Thoughts on Breathing Breathwork grounds us. I believe that it's virtually impossible to be truly mindful without being grounded. Proper breathwork, conscious deep breathing, also activates the parasympathetic part of our brains which is part of our central nervous system. It regulates so many functions of our body and when we're in the parasympathetic state, also known as rest and digest, we are doing just that. Our bodies are in the flow. Suggested Resources Book: You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay Book: The Freedom Promise: Seven Steps To Stop Fearing What Food Will Do TO You and Start Embracing What Food Will Do FOR You by Mindy Gorman-Plutzer App: Calm / BrainTap Bullying Story I bullied myself for so many years. I belittled my needs. I bullied myself into believing that I wasn't enough as I was. I bullied myself in such a way that belittled my needs for food and proper nourishment. I thought that I could buy my ‘enough', by denying myself. That for me was a form of bullying and self-betrayal. It wasn't until I went through that dark period that brought me to this period of light and self-discovery did I realize that until I found my enough and reclaimed it. As I said in the book, the freshly baked brownie, the glass or two of wine, the new pair of shoes, was never going to do it. What I needed to do was to dig deep and find what I like to refer to as my sacred space of solitude where I could dig deeper than myself. For me that became my higher power, my deepest self where I knew I was safe. And what does someone who is bullied want? They want to feel safe. They want to feel they belong. If you think about the bully, the bully is really a coward. My bully was my eating disorder self who needed me to believe that I needed her or else I couldn't function. That is what a bully does. What Does Mindfulness Mean To You? Mindfulness means being aware of bringing ourselves back home to ourselves. Connecting with our body. I call it the Universal Slap. It's a reminder from the universe that we need to bring ourselves back to ourselves. Suggested Resources Book: The Black Ball: Does Anybody Else Have A Secret? Bullying Story One of my first bullying events was when I was about 6 years old and it was through a teacher at school. Imagine a classroom of 20 children and the energy of that room is green, green being positive. So you're 6 years old and you're in this room playing and you're talking about the Simpsons. Then a teacher who is very angry, comes into the room and says, ‘wipe that smile off your face, Lovell'. He shames me in front of the other kids at a key developmental age. This happened multiple times. I am now creating a story that says, I'm not good enough, what's wrong with you, you're bad. When it comes to your present life, that interruption of energy from green to red, when I'm being shamed by the teacher, it's called hyper arousal. It's that hyper arousal that sends you into fight or flight. If that doesn't get resolved, you will continue to live a life where, when I'm 13 years old and I'm in a shower room being bullied by a rugby kid, now based on the earlier event, do I now stand up to the bully in the shower room, or do I cower? I cower. Effect on Emotions Crystal says mindfulness has affected her emotions tremendously. It helps me realize that whatever is going on outside of me that's causing me to feel these things can always be questioned and it's not necessarily the truth. If I go inside and be still with myself, then I can find the truth. Thoughts on Breathing Mark's thoughts on breathing: Breathing is everything because breathing brings you back to center. I wrote a forward to a book called Three Deep Breaths, by Thomas Crum. Three breaths are what you need to take before you go into meditation, I believe. It relaxes you, it centers you, and you get in touch with your soul, the essence of who you are, the god in you, that's what I believe. Suggested Resources Book: Molecules of Emotion: The Science Behind Mind-Body Medicine by Candace B. Pert App: Ask – The Book Club (www.AskTheBookClub.com) Bullying Story When I was in 8th grade I got a ride to school with the minister in this purple car. It was embarrassing to go to eighth grade in a purple car. We arrived at school and I had grown so tall, so fast. I was the tallest kid in class at 6′ 4″ and 13 years old. I was gangly and uncoordinated. I wrote to the radio station, WLS in Chicago. Wrote to the Great Pumpkin, who would answer every kid's question. My question to him was, Dear Great Pumpkin, my name is Mark Victor Hansen, I go to Webster Junior High School, I'm in Eighth grade, I'm 6′ 4″ and too tall for my class and I'm uncoordinated. So we're in the car with 6 kids and this question comes over the radio. He says, I'm going to tell you what to do today, Mark. “Cut off your head and carry it to school in a paper bag.” Every kid kept asking me, where's my bag. In the operating room, everyone always says, how come he's so calm. That calmness is because of mindfulness. Just taking time, having peace and presence of mind. That's how mindfulness has impacted me. It's given me a great amount of equanimity at times of duress. Thoughts on Breathing Mindfulness is very central and it's foundational to keeping myself centered and I also believe it helps to regulate my heart rate. I wear a sensor watch so I'm always proud of myself when my resting heart-rate is in the 40's. Sometimes I can get it down to 41 or 42. I'm also a runner so I should qualify that. I don't take any beta blockers. It's my way of saying to myself, I'm doing well. He embraced mindfulness and found a lot of value from it. I remind him now that he's in the stress of high school with a rigorous curriculum that he should use it as a way to bring himself back to present. It will give him the calm and the space to look at the world and understand how you fit into life holistically. Mindfulness gives me the opportunity to have gratitude and that has been very helpful. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is incredible. I personally have a feeling that the reason the cold showers give me so much energy is not just because of the temperature, but because they cause me to start breathing so deeply. So breathing is the key and if you are ever in such a panic state that you cant even conceptualize the idea of meditating, forcing yourself to breathe is the emergency solution. Suggested Resources Book: The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle App: Calm / Headspace Bullying Story When you break down bullying, it's a human being that is looking for some sort of validation or attention or love, and through their recklessness, as a lot of us are as kids, just having fun, laughing, crazy, just doing whatever we do, we find something that gets peoples’ attention. Think about a little baby who is trying to get attention and then it knocks something over and the mom responds. Then the kid starts laughing and now realizes that if it knocks stuff over, it’s going to get the attention and the validation it wants. The same thing happens in school. I genuinely think that the reason that someone is bullying, especially in younger years, has little or nothing to do with an actual issue or problem or pain that they’re having in their lives and other times it does have a lot to do with them expressing some other pain or challenge they’re dealing with maybe at home. That being said, the main thing that I’ve experienced was that person in Los Angeles taking advantage of me as a young person who was motivated and driven to be successful in the music industry. About 10 years ago I was doing some research with a colleague of mine who works with EI4Change, Doug Haynes. Doug and I were researching this concept of resilience. Everybody was talking about resilience, but what does it mean? We put together something called, Images of Resilience. Later, we set about designing and creating cards that supported the field of bullying. We covered confidence and assertiveness and rising to the challenge, with a knight fighting a dragon. Both of the cards have now been integrated into the coaching toolbox. This has resulted in wonderful, cathartic conversations around bullying in organizations, schools, and industry. Breathing also bridges the mind and the body, so when we connect with our breath, we create harmony between the mind and the body. I never really spoke and when I was a child I was made fun of for being very quiet. At the time, I didn't really notice how much it affected me because I was a very good athlete so my mode of expressing myself was always through my physical body. At the time I didn't really think all that much of it. Fast forward to my adult years and even up to this day, I notice any time that I want to express myself, speak in front of a group doing teaching or workshops or even doing podcasts, I notice that wounded child still coming up for me that was made fun of for never speaking. When I look back at that experience and work with clients that have been bullied, it is understanding that whoever the bully is, is really ultimately a bully to themselves. JJ: Hand in hand. Just be in a state of allowing and that's what the Law of Attraction is about, it's about a state of allowing. They're not 100% the same but they're needed and they both co-exist at the same time all the time. Bruce: When was the first time have you heard and learned about the Law of Attraction? JJ: The first time I really understood the Law of Attraction on a different level about it was in 2002. My life coach at the time sent me an Abraham Hicks CD. When I heard “You are the creator of your own reality”, that really hit me pretty hard. Bruce: What are your thoughts on the movie The Secret? JJ: I think it did a good job of making people aware of the Law of Attraction but it did not do a good job explaining the power behind it. Bruce: What are some of the tools that you use when someone first comes to you and seek out your coaching? JJ: I run a 30-day manifestation challenge. I develop guided visualizations, meditations, that people can use. Bruce: What are the biggest hurts and pains that people have who are coming to you for help. JJ: Relationship is a big one. I have a lot of people who want to work on their relationship. Do you want to hear more about their conversation? Listen to the episode to learn more! Mindfulness is being aware of your thoughts, why you're doing what you're doing, it's about living in the moment, realizing that you're okay and enjoying life at the same time. It's about realizing that you don't have to be focused on the past or the future. Of course, you can think about them once in a while; we're not going to ignore things that happened and not learn from them but the problem is that sometimes we focus way too much on what has happened in the past or worry way too much about what might help in the future. Mindfulness is focusing on the moment and being aware of your thoughts. - Bruce Langford Please leave us a review at http://reviewourpodcast.com Get on the waiting list for the Sky Fit Challenge Join our Open Sky Fitness Podcast Facebook Group! Do the 7 Day Paleo R This week, I am joined by Host of the Mindfulness Mode Podcast, Speaker, and Co-Author of Cracking The Success Code, Bruce Langford. We actually met at the Growth Now Movement and I was so inspired by his talk on self-love that I knew I had to bring him on the show to share what he knows. In today's episode, you'll learn all about: His life story and how he's now helping people bring more self-love into their life. Why fitness and nutrition are such a small piece of the puzzle when it comes to being healthy. Why people have such a hard time why they're bullying others or not taking care of themselves enough. The fact that we're all being bullies to ourselves and how we can change that by how we deal with it. Focusing on being quiet with yourself and what really matters to you and how to deal with your emotions. How he helps people who struggle with or are afraid of meditation and sitting still with their feelings. Why we should choose to be happy now rather than seek it or see it as an accomplishment because we will never have this moment in our lives again. Cracking The Success Code Click here to get your own copy of Cracking The Success Code How to Crack The Success Code is a task that humanity has reflected on from time immemorial. The sages and philosophers of every generation have pursued this question with unrelenting determination because everybody is looking for the answer - regardless of their field. So, who has the answer? Has this book found the "Silver Bullet?" The answer to this eternal enigma may vary for each one of us according to our definition of success. However, in this book, these Celebrity Experts(r) render their conclusions based on their proven experiences and core principles. Their answers are based on their firsthand knowledge versus academic hypotheses or philosophical assumptions. So, if you decided to learn more about success and achievement in your world, where would YOU look for the answers? The "nuggets of wisdom" that the Celebrity Experts(r) in this book offer us look at a world that is new and unfamiliar economic territory for us all. They have "been there and done it." They provide practical answers to these questions. Brian Tracy, for example, looks at changes that the business world and culture have experienced over the past hundred years, and, based on his knowledge and wide experience, projects how people will need to think and perform in the future to achieve success. This kind of visionary thought will enlighten and guide those who wish to achieve successful or outstanding accomplishments. We are therefore left with the options of spending our lives trying to "reinvent the wheel" on our own, or we can use the proven experience of people like these Celebrity Experts(r) to Crack The Success Code for us. Achievement seems to be connected with action. Successful men and women keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don't quit. - Conrad Hilton About Bruce Langford Bruce Langford became an entrepreneur in 2003 when shocked by the bullying he observed, he transitioned from being a teacher to a full-time advocate of bullying prevention. He founded the company, ‘Stand Up Now’ to share the message that respect can replace bullying. Bruce is also the host of the podcast, ‘Mindfulness Mode’ where his goal is to share how mindfulness can increase calm, focus and happiness for everyone, and ultimately reduce bullying. When you are self-aware, even when things are not going the way that you want, [it's important] that you don't get too hung up and you are not having emotional ups and downs. Thoughts on Breathing I meditate once every two or three days and I empty my mind and just focus on my breathing. Because of my martial arts training, breathing is a big part of what I do. One day I was in the cafeteria. I was eating my lunch that my mom had made for me. This kid came over and grabbed my hair and yanked my head back. He yelled at me, “why are you looking at me like this”. I wasn't looking at him. He said, “you wanna fight?” I was a skinny little guy of 110 pounds and I didn't want to fight. So he had his friends with him and he dragged me by the hair, out of the cafeteria, all the way out to the playground area. This happened in front of a lot of people because it was lunchtime. Then he beat the crap out of me. He had me on the ground and was kicking me. Then he yelled, “don't you look at me again.” Then he made some racist comments and walked away. I was crying and there were bruises and blood. I was so afraid. I went home to my mom and she asked me why I got into fights. I didn't even want to explain. I was getting beat up for no reason. I didn't know the language and I had no friends. There was a lot of resentment and a lot of anger. It was a very difficult time. Thoughts on Breathing That's a good one. Breathing is something that I need to be better at quite honestly. It's something that I'm consciously getting better at. I practice hot yoga and that's a great place for me to remember to breathe. I also am a big proponent of what I call 'power mottos'. Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify Contact Info Website: www.JasonLinett.com Book: Work Smart Business Podcast: Work Smart Hypnosis Most Influential Person Steve Martin, Actor. https://www.stevemartin.com/ Effect on Emotions I would say it affected my ability to respectfully call myself out, if I'm in that stressful mode. To recognize that even that stressful mode, anger, resentment, anxiety, whatever it may be, is a moment that from my language is already hypnotic in nature. Let's use a simple definition of a word that some people would have connotations of, the word trance. That's a loaded word, but my definition is rather simple: When internal perception carries more meaning than external reality. So that mindful moment just to take a deep breath, observe the environment that I'm actually in, become aware of my body occupying space is often that number one strategy to solve whatever stress or frustration may be there. Thoughts on Breathing You always get to bring your breath with you, and as long as you're breathing, you're going with the old George Burns line that I woke up in the morning, I read the obituaries, I didn't see my name, it was going to be a good day. But it has that ability to centralize the focus of the breathing and even at times to play with breathing that, from an almost hypnotic standpoint, to play with taking that breath and moving that in to a part of the body just dissolves away whatever stress or unresourceful emotion would be there. Sherife is an artist with a very unique perspective. When asked the question 'Who are you?' he replied: I'm god. And I'm not saying that in the sense like I'm the religious god, what I'm saying is, who I am truly is beyond the physical, and that being is hard to describe in words, because the potential of that soul or that spirit is so vast, it's endless. You're an infinite being, and if you're an infinite being, there's no way to really sum up in a few words who you actually are. Being able to go to sleep, having a dream, living in another dimension, coming back into this dimension and living out that dream, or having predictions of things, seeing the future, out of body experiences, there's so much to me as far as what I can do as a human being, it's hard to really sum it up. Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spreaker / Spotify Contact Info Website: N/A Podcast: No Most Influential Person Not a specific person, just nature. Effect on Emotions I was able to feel my thoughts. You know, when I monitor my thought, I'll say, okay, you know what? I'm not going to go any further to hurt myself or to hurt anyone else because I know that, in order for me to evolve will become better, I have to give up. But see, you gotta have a passion for these things. So I've always had a passion for it. So, the more mindful I became of my own thoughts and what I was doing at the time, it helped me snap out of it. And you know, sometimes I look back at the good deeds I've done for so many people and I fall in love with myself, you know, I've fallen in love, and it makes me more mindful. So in the middle of an argument, sometimes I can stop and tell a person, 'Hey, I love you' and people are scared to say that word today. You know, it's like a nightmare just to say that word. People are so afraid of it. Thoughts on Breathing Well, you know, the brain needs oxygen. Oxygen is a part of the ethos of the plants. And when you breathe in these, um, I mean we've get, when you breathe in the oxygen these plants are giving off, it's not just a cycle. It's not just what happens. This air that we breathe from these plants is communication. You received the oxygen from the plant. You inhale and when you exhale it's carbon. That carbon goes back into the plant. Then the plant knows now what you need to heal yourself, if you got cancer or if you got a liver problems. So now in turn, what the plant does is start growing fruits and vegetables for certain parts of our illnesses. It's no coincidence that the plant produces fruits and vegetables for certain parts of our body. That's not a coincidence, that's from the carbon that we breathe out. The plant knows now because, the oxygen that the plant has set out actually went into the bloodstream. The blood carries the oxygen to the brain, the muscles. And that has helped me heal. Definitely. You know, so when we exhale out, the plant takes that information back in. It's like oxygen has spied on your body by the oxygen traveling through your blood and through your kidney. Then you look at pecans and certain nuts you'll see that some nuts look like the brain, you know, and some foods are like different parts of our body, but that's not by accident. That's because the oxygen that we're breathing, the ether, the things that we shared with plants and stuff, it's important for us to breathe. You know? So when Shifu told us to breathe from the stomach and inhale, exhale, and you know, dealing with Tai Chi, that helped me a lot. Suggested Resources Book: The Celestine Prophecy: An Adventure by James Redfield App: Youtube (Chanting Shaolin Monks) Bullying Story Oh yeah. Well, you know, I was always fighting when I was young because I was picked on a lot. And so I learned how to become a bully myself at times. I'll tell you what, I was bullying somebody and that person turned out to be handicapped, you know, I'm teasing the person talking about them real bad. And then when they opened their mouth to respond to me, I found out that person was handicap, that that person couldn't really speak. And that hurt me. It hurt me really bad because see, that person was innocent. And when that person went to speak to me, when they turned around and talked to me and they sounded so crippled inside. I was really hurt because they can't defend themselves. It was a girl I was just picking on, but she would be considered ugly in today's society because she doesn't match up with the average models and so, she's not ugly to me, but by average standards that people would normally say she's ugly because she don't look like Beyonce or look like any other model out there. So, I had to tell her I love her. She's beautiful. I apologized to her and then she gave me thumbs up like she, you know, like, okay, we cool. She accepted it. Yes. And that made me feel so much better. It eased me because I walked away, but, you know, I just couldn't accept what happened, what just took place. So I had to apologize to her and everything. Effect on Emotions Many people say I'm super emotional. Sometimes I even cry in my classes and some students get disappointed if it didn't happen to cry in that specific class. And I'm like, guys, come on. It's not a competition about who makes me cry. It's just emotions are something that come through your body and it's better to let them manifest, then go and be there and be present with all those things that happened, the good, the bad, the ugly. Everything that happens is there, and cultivating that awareness and sitting with yourself sometimes is a very, very good experience and sometimes it's not. Being aware of your emotions is a big deal of practicing mindfulness because sometimes those uncomfortable moments where you're realizing you're still dealing with some stuff or where you get the most Aha moments where things just really come to you and you're aware that you still have to deal with this unsorted business. With mindfulness you can name them, you can make sure that you know are present and you can still choose what you want to do with those emotions. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is super essential. I. I always say in a yoga classes, the first five minutes is [crucial]. Call it whatever you want, but connecting to that inhale and exhale, there is no better way to really be in the present moment. It's just as simple as that. It's deeper inhales, longer exhales and everything comes into place. All the thoughts before that needs to happen to this breath really doesn't have any importance in anything that will have to happen after it. It's not there yet, so that one breath that you have, each and every time is the only thing we have, but it does take time to notice that it's really true. Suggested Resources Book: The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle App: The Breathing App Bullying Story When I was growing up in Siberia, (I didn't even think of it being as bullying), but I had a difficult time speaking to kids in school and I would be mocked and maybe few accidents where it was proper bullying now that you know it. The way I handled it was maybe not the best way, but kids are mean. And you start thinking, oh, I should have a thicker skin and just become tougher and don't cry and don't show weaknesses. And there was a moment where you really have to put the shield and to make sure that no one can come close to you. And it manifests it in many ways. It's not the only the way you do one thing is the way you do everything. So it's only recently I started realizing actually there are some childhood traumas there that I need to be dealing with. Mindfulness helped me to just be present with the uncomfortable feelings. These are things from more than 30 years ago. in Yoga we speak about letting go a lot, but it's actually a very difficult act. The task requires awareness and you can cultivate that awareness by simply meditating or being mindful about it. And as a child, I don't think I would have had those capacities, but as a grownup I can heal and I can understand and I can do the work of healing right now. Given the energy I have in my life right now and the borders I'm pushing, it's helped me not be trigger-happy. That's all right though, life has a way of teaching us these lessons. I got punched in the head a bit for mouthing off. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is about releasing and remembering. We have a thought, a good or bad thought, it doesn't matter, we often get so caught up in the content of the thought, we don't realize that if the thought were a pen, we're squeezing the crap out of that pen. I can hold the pen, or I can loosen it, keep in in my palm, or I can drop it. So this muscle of being able to hold with conscious intent, our thoughts and experiences without clinging and just let them go for a minute, that's powerful. I think breathing allows that. For me, the exhale is a way for me to release the grip on the content of my experience. I certainly have always stuck up for the underdog. I've come to understand that we do a lot with energy that we're not always responsible for. I once had a job at a design company and the woman had a sadistic quality and she would turn on people. She could be nice one day and not the next. It was that culture of fear. It could get kinda dark. There were a lot of girls who would get together and have therapy sessions downstairs. I confronted her about that in a calm way. I wasn't attacking, I was just saying, sometimes you turn and it feels like there's a serial killer in the room and it makes me feel real unsafe. I don't know if mindfulness would have helped because I think I was mindful. It was an interesting moment because she was all tough and cold and then she got really quiet and said, do you mind if I cry for a minute. And then we hugged and all. It was like she was vulnerable. There was such a weak, fragile little child underneathe that cruelty, which is true of all bullies by the way, that it was shocking. And now I've been consistent for almost five years and I still have the same person when the doorbell rings because I have the trainer come to me because I still don't trust that I'm going to go there, but when that bell rings, the same Layne still shows up and I greet her with love because I don't want to answer the door, but I am mindful and so that is how I use my mindfulness. I say, you're going to answer the door dear, and you're going to do the workout and you're going to be happy after it's done. And that to me is how I use mindfulness during my waking life. Thoughts on Breathing I guess it's similar to what happens for me in a meditation when the thoughts are scattered and they're all over the place. It always comes back to the breath. I don't see for me that much difference in that coming back to the breath is the same thing as saying it's okay girl, answer the door. It's getting back to the breath about my intention. I lost my eldest daughter about two years ago. There is a 20 years spread between my kids, they run from 45 all the way down to 25. When the older girls were young, I remember that one of them had a kid that was bullying her like crazy at school and the mindfulness mode that I used with my daughter, it didn't change the situation, but it sure changed how she felt about herself because, what I said was there's always something that we don't know. There's a blind spot that all of us have. And how do we know, for example, whether maybe her parents had a big fight this morning before she went to school. Maybe she has a parent who's screaming at her and maybe she's walking around with that so we don't know what's going on for someone else. We're blind to it and it's so nice to not take something personally and instead be thinking, wow, I wonder what's going on for that person that makes her be the way she is. Effect on Emotions I believe that mind or a thought in motion, (thought and feeling) are inextricably linked. My bias is that thought probably occurs first, although we may not see it, or be aware of it. So I have learned that when I'm in a particular mood, whether elevated or deflated, if I check in as to what was the last thought I had, I can find the thought that set up the feeling. Now the thing is, once you have the feeling, that feeling then will summon up more similar thoughts, which is why we tend to cycle up or down. But there are different words and labels that we put to describe human experience. So we think of thought being from the neck up. I can't say it resides there and we think of feeling as being in the gut, and who knows. But what we call thought and feeling are different aspects of the same whole. Think about a coin. The head and tail aren't separate. They are different aspects of the coin. Thought and feeling I see as different aspects of human consciousness Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is not sufficiently part of my mindful practices. It's something I need to work on. I tend to reside in my spirit and in my mind. My work is to develop more awareness in my body and to be more conscious and mindful of my breathing. So to the point of embracing vulnerability and sharing your truth. That's work I still need to do Suggested Resources Book: Read Alfred North Whitehead, the philosopher, 19th century. Bullying Story This has come up in a number of circumstances around bullying in my work as a therapist. Take an individual in a marriage where one person felt bullied by the other, and in this case atypically. Perhaps it was the man who felt bullied. Now, why was he allowing and tolerating the bullying? Because his self worth, self esteem was questionable. So when other than someone physically bullying you and them being twice your size and in the moment not knowing what to do about it, bullying is often emotional and verbal. When it is such, the question is, if I am tolerating it, why? It reflects back to my core issue with myself. Do I value myself? What do I deserve? What stories and narratives am I telling myself about the bullying and why I might endure it. The story might be, if it happened to a child, if I told mom and dad, they'll be angry at me because I didn't stand up for myself. Or the story might be, the word will get out and then I'll feel embarrassed or ashamed. We make up stories. We have to penetrate the stories we tell ourselves and come to the authentic truth, which is what's my fear? No, we are taught to act strong and to avoid vulnerability. That is a misunderstood and misinformed belief. Acting strong is acting, it's weak. Embracing my vulnerability means that I'm sharing who I am, what my self doubts and fears and insecurities are, and that means I'm not worried about you judging me. That is authentic self esteem. Culturally self esteem is misunderstood. I call what we do other esteem. So you ask a parent, what will give your child good self esteem? Well, if they're popular and they're great in sports and they get great grades, that doesn't give you self esteem. So what we do is we betray our authentic sense of self to manipulate things so that others will like us or approve of us. But when we do that to an extreme, we don't develop a core sense of self. That will lead to allowing bullying. Free Gift Become more calm, focused and happy by reading the top 12 books recommended on the Mindfulness Mode Podcast. It's about understanding those emotions and having nothing attached to them; allowing them to be. It's not about shoving those emotions away. It's about seeing those emotions and being present with them and just allowing them to have their light. Not to be attached to what they are or what I'm feeling about them. Thoughts on Breathing Whenever I get into an emotional state, the first thing I start doing is noticing my breathing. A mindfulness practice is usually centered upon noticing your breath and your belly rising and falling. The first thing I do when i get tense or stressed or really upset, I start really feeling my breathing. The worst thing you can do in those moments is to get into shallow breathing. Bullying Story I had some experiences as a child where I was bullied a little bit. I was a smaller guy, and of course, you know people will pick on you because you're smaller sometimes. I had good friends and they were always around to help take care of me if it was needed. I was really good at standing up for myself. One time I was up the block from where I used to live in Santamonica. I saw this guy walking quickly down the sidewalk and he had a dog on a leash. It was a smaller dog and he was almost dragging it. The dog was suffering. I thought, this was not right, so I stopped him and said, what the hell are you doing, this dog is not able to keep up with you. I had the presence to intervene and I really made it a point that what he was doing was not okay. I think he heard it. He was very upset about something. What I regret was that I didn't take more control because he continued on. I thought afterwards, he might have just continued on with that and I thought I should have done more. I had the presence, which is all about being in mindfulness mode, to do something, but I felt I could have done more. When I think back to being present, or not being present, it's about being fully present to actually see the experience through to a conclusion somehow and now just let it take on it's own life. Mindfulness has been absolutely huge because in the most stressful situations in life, which are all compliments of being an entrepreneur. My emotions have allowed me to self-regulate and to keep myself as calm as possible in every situation and I faced some pretty traumatic circumstances in my business and in my life and I've always looked at them in a way where it's, what do we need to do? What's my next move in this situation? So mindfulness has been critical for me. Thoughts on Breathing Like I said before, if I couldn't ride my bike, I wouldn't be able to breathe and breathing was really critical to my being able to deal with my debilitating flying anxiety. I think breathing, more than anything else, is the number one thing that people must be doing when they are trying to get of themselves. Suggested Resources Book: Brain Lock: Free Yourself from Obsessive-Compulsive Behavior by Jeffrey M. Schwartz Book: Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain App: Listening to music Bullying Story When we talk about bullying, I won't say that I experienced bullying in the way we see it today. When I was in high school I was in a situation where I had people threatening me and this was in the seventies. I grew up in Detroit and there were was a lot of racial conflict at that time. There was a TV show called Roots that came on. It was a mini-series with LaVar Burton, I think in 1976 or 1977. There was tremendous conflict between the African American students and the white students in all of the schools in Detroit because we had come out of the race riots and the violence of the police against African Americans in the late sixties. And we moved into the seventies and we experienced something called white flight where a judge ruled that all of the city schools must be integrated or desegregated. So now they were busing white kids into black schools and black kids into white schools. And the amount of violence that was going on in the schools at that time was just unheard of. And I was one of the white students that was taken out of an all-white school. This was completely random. It's just like they picked your name out of a hat and you had to go. And so I was taken out of an all-white high school and moved over to an all-black high school and there were six white kids in my graduating class. And I had an instance where I was in a locker room. I was asked to come be the token on the basketball team and I couldn't play basketball to save my life. But there I was and apparently, some kids had done something and they got in trouble for it and they thought I told on them. So one of the other basketball players came over and she grabbed one of these metal cages where we would put our clothes in lockers and she picked it up and started shoving it in my face. You know, saying that I was the one who did it. And I kept pleading with her saying, I didn't do it, I didn't do it, but when you're in a situation like that you know, you're guilty until further proven guilty. What I knew in that moment is I had been, up till that moment in my life, someone who was very much a diplomat, even though I'm telling everybody to f**k off, it was always around doing the right thing and you never caused harm to people. And I was very much about justice and making sure that people treated each other properly. And I spent most of my time in that situation, pleading with her to get her to understand who I was and to see me properly and to know that I would never do something like that because that's just not who I am. But the circumstances were such that it was such an incendiary environment that there was nothing I could do. And so the remainder of the year I was pretty much alienated from the rest of the students and I'd try and engage them, but you know, there was nothing I could do. And so I just kind of went about my business, but I think the thing with mindfulness and a situation like that is when you know yourself well enough and you feel really rock solid in who you are and you have a moral compass and a guide that is all about knowing what it is the right thing to do in a situation. I didn't have a real problem with that because I always knew who I was and maybe that's why early on I could tell people to go f**k off because, you know, they were not going to tell me something and they're not gonna blow smoke up my ass. I wasn't going to have any part of it because I knew exactly what they were doing. And so that, that's been kind of a guiding principle for me throughout my whole life, which is all about being mindful of other people and behaving in a way that's respectful of them and always working toward finding a way where we can work together so that everybody wins. Because I don't believe that it's beneficial in life for people to lose as a result of what someone else has done. Competition is one thing, but when people are losing in life because somebody else gets to win, that doesn't work for me. Most Influential Person Richard Rohr, Author Effect on Emotions I will say very briefly that for much of my life because of childhood influences, I was plagued by anxiety and even depression and mindfulness has enabled me to realize that most of that came from distorted thinking. That was not anything relevant to the moment that in the moment I was just fine and all of that other talk, self talk was really not even true. I didn't have to pay attention to that and that really has, has helped me be much more content and I'm secure, emotionally. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is so easy and in fact, when I give keynotes and workshops on the ComeBACK formula, this is one of the practices that I recommend because it's easy and it's nonthreatening. There are all kinds of different ways as you know, that are projected to do this and recommended, but if you just focus very simply on taking a deep breath in and holding it for just a second and then letting it out, it does calm us down. It's a physiological as well as mental and emotional intervention and it's totally self guided and possible. So breathing slowly and consciously and mindfully is a great, great practice. Suggested Resources Book: Everything Belongs: The Gift of Contemplative Prayer by Richard Rohr App: Focus@Will also Headspace Bullying Story I have been very fortunate in my life not to have been the subject of bullying to a great extent. I already mentioned that there was that manager who was probably the closest that I came to bullying. She was out of control. The more I think about this in this mindful moment, the more I think that really was bullying. She was bullying the entire team, our entire office and eventually to the degree that she got bounced out of her position. But not before she did a lot of damage. And that was before the fire. It was before I was able to learn these deeper lessons and I didn't really handle it well. There was a time that I remember I was kind of toe to toe yelling. I mean, we were yelling back and forth. It was that bad. Well, how can I not say I've never been bullied when I'd forgotten about this? Okay. So you brought it back and if I had been more mindful, certainly in she had been more mindful that never would've happened. You know, I think mindfulness also leads us to compassion because if we're mindful of not just what's going on in the here and now with us, but with others around us, we can see the situation more from their perspective even if we don't agree with that perspective. And certainly there was not a lot of that. So had I been more mindful in those days, I probably would have let a lot more of that slide. I would not have been so personally offended and, and defending myself, which really didn't do any good. Corporations that implement mindfulness training have experienced increased ROI by as much as 27% due to higher productivity, decreased sick leave and reduced employee turnover. It only makes sense that when we’re calm and grounded, our performance improves. Mindfulness affords us the clarity to choose the right path and allows us to course-correct when challenges arise. During his 14-year career in bullying prevention, Bruce Langford discovered that we often bully ourselves, engaging in self-sabotaging behaviors that erode our confidence and happiness. Bruce began to incorporate mindfulness techniques to help students in a variety of bullying situations identify their blocks and overcome the fears that were holding them back. In August of 2015, Bruce launched a podcast with the intention of sharing the value of mindfulness with a wider audience. Two years later, Mindfulness Mode is on the list of Top 35 Podcasts to Watch in 2018 as well as the iTunes Top 50 in the self-help category. Beyond the podcast, Bruce is a Mindfulness Life Coach, helping professionals, corporate employees, entrepreneurs, team leaders and CEOs decrease their anxiety and stress through mindfulness. Today he joins Emerald to explain how he leverages the practices of meditation and journaling to achieve clarity. Bruce shares the story behind the Mindfulness Mode Podcast, discussing how reconnecting with his initial inspiration gave him courage in moments of fear and how mindfulness informed the process. He offers advice around discerning between overwhelm and fear, employing breathing and focus exercises, and using accountability partners to stay on track. Listen in for Bruce’s insight on how mindfulness relates to money and the value of mindfulness in the corporate setting. We can get trapped in depression and anxiety. And folks, I'm a trained professional psychologist and a participating member of planet earth, of the human race and so I get to feel these things too. Even as a trained professional, the feelings that I have; this is part of the powerful effect of mindfulness. These feelings that I have are perfect and completely consistent with the way my mind is doing those two processes we talked about today; evaluation and creation. And you're never wrong about the way you feel. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing; I recommend it every day! Breathing is something that I teach my clients as a way to calm the limbic system response. There are structures in your brain including the amygdala that create a fight or flight response and in the meantime we experience threat. The easiest way and the quickest way that we have a lot of control over is to engage in conscious, deliberate, breathing exercises. This has a calming effect on the limbic system of the brain and reverses some of the chemical processes that are going on that allow us to get back into mindfulness mode. When the limbic system is triggered it actually changes the blood flow in the brain and makes those higher cognitive areas of the brain less accessible to us. The first thing you may say is, 'I don't have the time'. People get on a vicious cycle with looking after their children, husband, demanding job. Women have taken on these really big jobs in the last twenty or thirty years, but they didn't take away very much. They still try to be the perfect wife/mother and homemaker. I would say you must make time for your mindfulness and find a resource, listen to the Mindfulness Mode Podcast, or find any other mindfulness website or resource and just try it. Make the time. Bruce Langford believes in mindfulness and it's power to help people. He became an entrepreneur in 2003 when, shocked by the bullying he observed; he transitioned from being a teacher to a full-time advocate of bullying prevention. He founded the company, ‘Stand Up Now' to spread the message that when we all focus on respect, bullying will decline. Bruce is also host of the podcast, ‘Mindfulness Mode' where his goal is to share how mindfulness can increase calm, focus and happiness for everyone, and ultimately reduce bullying. On today's episode of The Game Changer Podcast, I have the pleasure of speaking with Bruce Langford, a former school teacher, whose mission it is to stop the bullying he saw happening in schools. In our discussion, Bruce speaks to the value of his program on mindfulness and meditation, and how it greatly lowers bullying both internally and externally. If you have followed my blog or podcast for any amount of time, you know what an avid supporter I am in having a daily meditation practice. I don't believe it's as much about how long you meditate each day, but rather, how you wind up leading a more mindful way of life through this practice over time. So when that internal critic shows up, we become much quicker at squelching it, and instead focusing on what helps us to reach our greatest, highest good. Now imagine learning mindfulness and meditation at a young age, and how different your life would be as an adult. Hi, I’m Bruce Langford. I’m a teacher, bullying prevention advocate, and podcaster. Mindfulness Mode Podcast is my way of sharing with you what I’ve learned through helping thousands of bullied teens, adults and children over the past 12 years. I want to connect with you, provide content that matters to you, I want to make your life better, and share with you how you can have more calmness and more focus in your life. I’d love to hear from you. Let me know who you’d like me to interview and what you think of the 2-day a week show, with episodes approximate 30 minutes long on Mondays and Thursdays. My email is bruce@mindfulnessmode.com. Mindfulness has changed me. I’m a lot more relaxed and more focused than I used to be. One of the things I love about mindfulness is the scientific side to it. There are quite a few scientists out there studying the brain and human behaviors, there are more and more studies showing that mindfulness changes neuro-pathways in the brain, proving to the science community why this works. Experts like, Dr. Zindal Segal, who’s a professor at the University of Toronto, specializing in mood disorders and depression. In his TedX talk, he explains the science behind using mindfulness to help people deal with stress and achieve mood balance. I believe The Mindfulness Mode Podcast will be interesting and valuable for you. I’ve interviewed so many successful people who share their personal views on mindfulness. You can’t help but learn from them. That’s why I say you’ll reach new heights of calm, focus and happiness by listening in. Our Mindfulness Mode guests are people from all walks of life who’ve experienced the benefits of mindfulness first-hand. You’ll hear them talk about the changes they experienced in their lives, the way they used mindfulness to move forward, and how you can practice mindfulness much like they do. If you go to mindfulnessmode.com, you’ll be able to click on the podcast link and subscribe. If you subscribe, it’ll help us stay on the air and create lots more episodes. If you like it, we’d be thrilled if you were inclined to leave a 5 star review and oh …. we’ll mention you at the top of an upcoming show. Like I said. I’d love to hear from you. Please subscribe to the show, and download the episodes. Listen in and give me your feedback. You can email me here. In the meantime, Stay In the Mode.
