In this episode of Navigating Rough Terrain with the Dementia Sherpa, Christy Turner and I discuss the importance of incorporating simple pleasures into the daily routine and care plan for your person. When caring for someone living with dementia, it's easy to get wrapped up in the day-to-day challenges or focus on the negative aspects of the disease. But in order to have good quality of life for both you and your person, simple pleasures must be an integral part of your care plan. Simple pleasures will put a smile on a face and lift one's spirit. Among other positive aspects, simple pleasures also help create lasting memories.
In this episode of Navigating Rough Terrain with the Dementia Sherpa, Christy Turner shares ideas to help you make small changes to the care you provide that can make a huge positive difference and improve the quality of life for both you and your loved one. Although dementia is complex, these small adjustments to the way you provide care can be incorporated into your daily routine and approach.
Christy Turner, a former Memory Care director, shares her insider knowledge to help you get the facts you need to make the best decisions possible when selecting a community for your loved one. When you are considering moving a loved one with dementia into long-term care, it's likely you have many, many questions about what it will be like for your loved one and for your family. You've got hope that's shrouded in mystery, maybe false beliefs and misconceptions that are engulfing you in fear of the unknown. Not all dementia care communities are alike - some are great while others are less than stellar. But how do you cut through the sales pitch and determine if a community is right for your family?
Christy Turner and I not only discuss the importance of having a plan but we also give you suggestions on how to get started and things to be thinking about. You know it's important but the majority of us procrastinate when it comes to formalizing a plan. The thought alone might paralyze you; but not having a plan in place will likely have a significant negative impact that will be detrimental to the well being of your loved one as well as you.
In this episode of Navigating Rough Terrain with The Dementia Sherpa, Christy Turner and I discuss how you can avoid the pitfalls and have a great holiday season with your loved one. What a great time of year but the holidays definitely come with a unique set of challenges and accompanying stress. When you're trying to balance your role as dementia care partner with the demands of the holiday, it's easy to have a bad experience or two. But there are so many opportunities to have a great experience with your loved one. So you must find ways to maximize the joy of the holiday season.
Doctors visits – who the heck looks forward to them? In this episode of Navigating Rough Terrain with the Dementia Sherpa, Christy Turner shares her expertise with you to help you more easily get your loved one to the doctor. Because when you think your loved one needs to go, this situation can, and usually does, turn into a mess. But with the right technique and maybe a little practice, you can turn this situation into a positive experience for everyone.
If the person you are caring for has a form of dementia, then it's likely they do things that they may not have done in the past. Or maybe, because they have dementia, you think they shouldn't be doing something. But understanding why they are doing things is extremely important to providing the best care possible resulting in the best positive experience possible for everyone. In this episode of Navigating Rough Terrain with the Dementia Sherpa, Christy Turner and I have a discussion to help you better understand why your person is doing these things.
Sharing news with others is something we do routinely as part of our relationships. But sharing news and information, whether it's good or bad, can have unwanted, or maybe better said, un-needed consequences for the person who is living with dementia. In this episode of Navigating Rough Terrain with the Dementia Sherpa, Christy Turner, shares her expertise and wisdom to help you determine the best approach to sharing information with your person.
You hear it, but what does it mean to advocate for your loved one? And how can you be an effective advocate for your loved one? Christy Turner, the Dementia Sherpa, has run award-winning memory care communities in assisted living and skilled nursing levels of care. And in this episode of Navigating Rough Terrain with the Dementia Sherpa, she discusses how you can protect your loved one and help ensure they are receiving the best care possible.
In this episode, Christy Turner, The Dementia Sherpa, and I take a deeper look at the loss of independence and how you as a care partner can empower and support your person to remain independent for as long as possible.
For most of us, driving is an engrained part of our lives. We zoom here and there whenever we want or need to. This independence comes with a huge responsibility because of the safety element. So it's now wonder this is a huge problem for many families as they worry about their loved one. In this episode, Christy Turner, The Dementia Sherpa, is going to share strategies to help you navigate this delicate situation. Visit https://togetherinthis.com/episode60/ for the show notes including any mentioned resources and links.

During this conversation, Christy Turner, the Dementia Sherpa, shares what she has learned during her time with more than 23 people and their families as they transition from life to death. Death isn't a topic most of us are comfortable with discussing; however, it's an inevitable outcome of life for all of us. But talking about death and planning for it can make what might be otherwise a bad death, a good death. This is the first in a three part series on end of life. The next two episodes will discuss “things no one tells you about end of life,” and “the end of life specialists.” I hope you find this mini-series beneficial. Bye now.
For the past 3 episodes, Christy Turner and I have been discussing the four elements that I teach strategies for in my signature course, Adapting Your Home for Dementia. In episodes 48 through 50, we discussed the importance of safety, function, and stimulation in a dementia friendly home. In this episode, we close out this series with a discussion on the fourth element: eliminating triggers which result in negative outcomes; aka. unwanted behaviors. If you've been incorporating the elements of safety, function, and stimulation into your home, then you are already well on your way to eliminating negative triggers. Adapting your home for dementia and making it dementia friendly is a lot of work but by taking incremental steps each day, you can keep your loved one home longer, safer, and happier. Thank you and I look forward to sharing more with you next week when Christy and I start a 3 episode series on end of life – Creating a good death, things no one tells you about end of life, and the end of life specialists. Bye now.
