In this episode, I touch on some recent Travel Photographer of the Year competition news and dive into a really interesting email I received last week from a regular reader and follower of my work, the crux of which is included below:'Hey Josh, You know I love your photography as this isn't my first email :-). You have a unique minimalist style that really sets your work apart; its truly wonderful that you not only find and create such amazing photographic art in this insane world but that you help others also achieve their photo dreams. But something has been bothering me and its these other workshop leaders who seem to be copying everything you do. I have followed you for years and watched you lead unique first of their kind trips for Arctic Fox, Greenland winter, Pallas Cat in Mongolia and more. I have also watched others copy exactly what you do. I am sure you are aware of it, but I get quite annoyed on your behalf when I see these others market themselves as 'the first', or 'class leading' or whatever term they choose to use. I have no idea if it bothers you, but I hope you continue to look forward and not back. Keep up the incredible work. I know there are many others out there who feel the same as me about your work and how you are being copied. I just wanted you to know you had some support out there and that we have your back."Firstly, thank you so much to the author for the wonderful words about my own work. Hugely appreciated. After I received this email, I had to think long and hard about how I felt about this topic. I had a subsequent follow-up email discussion with the author, and we both decided that this topic was worthy of a podcast. It's bound to be somewhat divisive, and perhaps that's what is required at this juncture? I am unsure, and I certainly don't want to come across as arrogant, but what I do know is that I have no rear-vision mirror of consequence for those who choose to follow in this field. I have always looked forward, and I believe it's firmly up to the person choosing and booking a workshop, whether they want to go with someone who chooses to lead in their field - or someone who follows the crumbs. Every person can and should decide who they travel with and why. Just one of the many reasons it's so important to do your homework when booking any trip. In Karen's own words: “I was 17 years old, traveling alone, when I boarded a plane to Europe. Living in a different culture I experienced the world in new and surprising ways and discovered myself. My love of travel was born. I didn't return to the US for three years. Since then I've traveled to more than 90 countries. I climbed Kilimanjaro, conquered my fear of falling to go on an elephant trek in Thailand, spent time in Berlin shortly after the wall came down, stayed with a Japanese family who taught me to make sushi and made friends across the globe. In pursuit of my passion for travel I've lost and gained friends and lovers and made a radical career change. Travel is my addiction, and I don't want treatment I studied ceramics in college and graduate school but abandoned that career and switched to marketing so that employers would pay for my travel. In my new career as a marketing strategist and researcher I've traveled the world conducting thousands of meetings, focus groups and interviews. My skills as an interviewer have persuaded total strangers to talk candidly about the most intimate of subjects, personal bankruptcy, illness, and religion. When traveling for pleasure, those same skills helped me to draw out people's stories. I've learned about their lives, as well as local customs and fashions and what makes them laugh. These conversations often led to invitations for dinner and personal tours. “Travel Mania: Stories of Wanderlust” is a compilation of stories that explore how travel can change a life. Like my readers, I am an ordinary person. Through travel I've learned courage and risk taking and succeeded at things I didn't know I could do. Each story can be read and enjoyed independently. My hope is that they will tickle the travel bug in readers and encourage them to set off on their own adventures. I live in New York City.” On this episode of The One Way Ticket show, Karen shares her one way ticket to see what New York City was like from the 1920s onwards. Plus, she also shares her second book, "Wanderlust: Extraordinary People, Quirky Places, and Curious Cuisine". Throughout the conversation, we talk travel, travel, and more travel!
This episode of the SheClicks Women in Photography Podcast features an insightful conversation with award-winning photographer Marina Spironetti. Marina is a Milan-based travel and food photographer who has found great success by entering prestigious photography competitions.Originally studying languages and journalism, Marina discovered her passion for photography serendipitously through developing photos in a darkroom. She went on to study photojournalism and has since built a successful freelance career focusing on travel and food photography assignments around the world. In the podcast, Marina discusses how early rejection from a photography competition motivated her to keep improving. Her persistence paid off when she went on to win categories in competitions like the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year and Travel Photographer of the Year. Marina shares valuable lessons she's learned about entering competitions, including researching the right ones for her style of work.Winning awards provided major career boosts for Marina. Photo editors suddenly contacted her about assignments rather than the other way around. She offers insights into how recognition from competitions opened new opportunities that allowed her to grow her freelance business.Marina also discusses her portrait of Martina Bartolozzi, a female butcher from Panzano in Tuscany, Italy, that won her the very first Claire Aho Award for Women Photographers in the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year Awards. Marina gives a fascinating perspective on how photography competitions can elevate photographers' careers when the right strategies are employed.Connect with MarinaWebsiteInstagramFacebookX (Twitter)Support the show

PRODUCTION NOTE: I unfortunately had some issues with the guest audio on this show, so you will hear some echo at times. My apologies to my guest, and to you - the viewers and listeners. Tim Gerard Barker is an award-winning photographer and filmmaker based in Hanoi, Vietnam, who I met through the folks over at Wonderful Machine. As soon as I saw Tim's work, I knew I needed to get him on the show. When you look at Tim's portfolio you'll see photography categories for Hospitality I Hotels and Resorts, Lifestyle, Corporate, Industrial, Portraiture, Travel, Landscape | Aerial, and NGO | Documentary, and trust me.... he's amazing at all of those. Looking through his work I was immediately struck by some of his commercial lifestyle shots. The detail in how he structures a scene for a client just blows my mind. His understanding of where the goals of a client and the craft of photography meet is next level. He writes about some of his shoots, and reading the post about today's image was very enlightening. You can find that here, or at the link below, under the subhead "Male Financial Professionals | Hanoi Train Street". Of course, none of that is surprising. Tim has extensive experience working throughout Asia on a wide range of photography and videography projects. His results are not cookie cutter images either. His ability to capture real people and real places, and the uniqueness of a culture, is refreshing. He manages to convey his stories with a colourful, graphic style that has resulted in numerous awards over the years, with citations in the International Photography Awards, Australia's Top Photographers and Travel Photographer of the Year. His client list is a who's who of corporate giants, including Nike, Forbes, Novartis, Discovery Channel, CNN, BBC and more. Her work has taken her across the globe and has been featured in Vogue, Condé Nast Traveller, National Geographic, Architectural Digest, and Travel & Leisure. Ms. Rudd suffered from Lyme disease for 10 years before she was diagnosed in 2021. She balanced her pre-diagnosed symptoms and travel by visiting over 50 United States (US) and international doctors. Knowing her body was out of balance, she pursued a wide variety of medical diagnostic testing; including, bio-resonance, blood, and clinical. After locating a diagnosis, Ms. Rudd tapped into her artistic skill set to build a healing plan. She utilized multi-sensory treatment tools such as blue, red, and sun light, diffused lavender oil, 54321 sensory exercises, adaptogen herbs, ozone, parasite and mold cleanses, meditation, Qigong, and energy healing. Today, Ms. Rudd continues treatment, but she has returned to work and her social life.
