Caring for a loved one with dementia often means navigating challenging behaviors and emotional moments. But what if those behaviors, often labeled as "challenging," are actually normal human responses magnified by communication gaps? In this episode, we tackle real caregiver questions about controlling anger, managing paranoia, and determining when a loved one can no longer live alone. Using a practical framework, we offer actionable insights to help caregivers respond with compassion and clarity. Throughout the caregiving journey, faith serves as an anchor. When moments feel overwhelming, leaning into prayer and trusting God's guidance provides strength and peace. This episode emphasizes that caregiving is not just a responsibility—it's an opportunity for growth and sanctification through serving others.
Did the Deftones influence Sleep Token? This month, Alain kicks off the third of our four-part series exploring albums that sound like they were influenced by other albums. Or perhaps, more broadly, bands that sound like they were influenced by other bands, focusing on an album from each band that demonstrates the similarities. Can you find the influences when listening to Deftones' White Pony and Sleep Token's Sundowning? Join us at the end of the month for our discussion episode.
We're live with national security expert John Guandolo who says the signs are visible that an attack on America is in the works and may be imminent. The former undercover FBI agent explains how the Democrats are openly calling for the assassination of their political enemies. "Sundowning" becomes the word of the day and a Washington Post editorial imagines Joe Biden's political eulogy and raises plenty of eyebrows.

Here is our analysis of the incredibly depressing, even shocking first presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. While the topic of this episode is self-explanatory, it's worth making a few comments about our conversation. We recorded this on the afternoon of Friday, June 28, the day after the debate (thus, you'll often hear us refer to "last night"), and you can tell we're still somewhat processing what happened—in particular, we'd have a clearer sense of what could, and could not, be done in the weeks ahead to find an alternative to Biden if we were to record it now. Even more, in the past 24-36 hours new reporting has emerged that portrays Biden's capabilities in bleak terms, from the claim that Biden has about six "good" hours a day to damning portrayals of his confused, stumbling performances at key international meetings with foreign heads of state. Because that reporting largely confirms an off-the-record story shared with Matt, we thought, especially given the circumstances, it was worth including here. And because of the seriousness of Biden's apparent decline, your hosts' positions to continue to evolve. Matt, for example, has called for Biden to not just step aside from the campaign, but resign from office.Sources:Daniel Schlozman, "Elder Statesmen," Dissent, Spring 2024Alex Thompson, "Two Joe Biden's: The Night America Saw the Other One," Axios, June 29, 2024Annie Linskey, Laurence Norman, & Drew Hinshaw, "The World Saw Biden Deteriorating. The phenomenon known as sundowning is when a person who is living with dementia no longer has the capacity to participate in normal, day-to-day activities as they did earlier in the day. Sundowning - Psalm 107:1-3, 17-32 - from Sunday, July 31, 2022
In this episode on the Living with Alzheimer's podcast, Christoph discusses sundowning with Claudia Schwenzer, a Care Counselor for https://www.alz.org/ (Alzheimer's Association) Michigan Chapter. Care counselors help families develop individualized caregiving plans that fit the specific needs of their family member impacted by dementia. Their help can be requested at Alzheimer's Association's 24/7 Helpline at 800.272.3900. Sundowning is a state of confusion that occurs for people with dementia, typically in the late afternoon. It can cause a number of behaviors such as confusion, anxiety, aggression or wandering. We discuss the impact, causes and resources for dealing with the phenomenon of sundowning. Claudia also talks about safety considerations and research projects related to dementia and sundowning. Then I speak with my friend Jordan Gilliam who describes his experiences as a caregiver in long-term care facilities. He shares his insights about and approaches to increasing personal dignity and reducing agitation for people living with dementia. Finally, I speak with Ginger about her perceptions and awareness of sundowning as well as how I can help her when she's dealing with the confusion that occurs when sundowning happens for her.
Kathie Murphey has been caregiving for 42 ½-years.her son, Matt, is down syndrome.18 month/ 2-year level! He is non-verbal and uses sign language to communicate! He's always required 24/7 care then about 7 years ago she noticed that he was regressing! Finally got the diagnosis that he now has Alzheimer's!! Down syndrome people start progressive aging at about 30 and by the time they are 50, about 50% have Alzheimer's!! Something about the extra gene in that 23rd chromosome. All the down syndrome years were easy but, this Alzheimer's is hell. Sundowning, incontinence, eating problems, agitation, horrible for all the caregivers! She is on line with Alzheimer's caregivers from around the world and we support each other!! 24 hours a day!!I thank God every day for my caregiver site!!
As many of you know, especially those of you here in Winnipeg, Dub Ditch Picnic Records' Chris Jacques died last week. Chris meant an awful lot to the community, and was a good friend and inspiration to so many people in the local music scene -- going back decades. He was also a guest on this podcast twice -- once on an early episode in 2014, and again for a one-on-one interview about Dub Ditch's 10th anniversary in 2020. Both of those episodes are here in one two-hour-and-fifteen-minute mega-podcast for those who want to remember him.The 2014 episode, in particular, was one of the 'lost episodes' -- a series of about 40 podcasts from the early days that, due to my technological incompetence, didn't get added to to the Witchpolice Radio feed when I switched podcast hosting companies, and hasn't been easy to find in the time since. Please enjoy. It's not really a tribute to Chris so much as a reminder of what he was passionate about with Dub Ditch and his other labels (Sundowning and Prairie Fire), and while he's not with us any more, all of the releases he worked so hard on -- and there's a lot of them -- are still on Bandcamp in perpetuity. Check 'em out.(Also, I totally stole this photo from a great piece on Dub Ditch from years back by Sheldon Birnie. You should read that too). Thanks for everything, Chris. You are very missed by all of us.
