Nate, Ryan, and Jordan are joined by new guest Andrew Elmore to discuss DARK SOULS, FromSoftware's 2011 cult classic action RPG. We discuss difficulty versus approachability, grim fantasy aesthetics, and what it means for something to be called "the Dark Souls of [X]." Jordan gets lost in the narrative weeds, Ryan and Andrew discover a mutual love of Chromehounds, and Nate tries holding with both hands.

In this week’s episode, JD and Eli break down a number of game rumors, including the PlayStation 5’s price, the remake of Resident Evil 4, and Phil Spencer teasing MechAssault for Xbox Series X (anything to help us get over Chromehounds). There are deep dives on rumored Mario games for Switch, Last of Us Part 2 being delayed, and Randy Pitchford as the ultimate villain of Gearbox (save us, Claptrap). Finally, JD pitches a game that’ll teleport you to a magical world...er, actually, it’s inside a hard drive or something?

Recorded on March 26th, 2013 with Brian Fife, James Fingal and Thomas Westberg. Now that video games are big business - perhaps bigger than movies - they have advertising and promotional budgets to match. It is common to see video games promoted in a way similar to other mass media - billboards and television ads. The group talks about the way they learn about games, keep up on game news (or at least used to) and the way game reviews and metacritic scores are handled. They also discuss their game buying strategy, when (if ever) to preorder, and how they track game sales. Referenced items: PAX East 2013, Borderlands Two, Simcity (new), A Question of Competence - Tobold, Square Enix CEO Stepping Down, Indie Game: The Movie, Super Meat Boy, X-Com Enemy Unknown, Bioshock: Infinite, Diablo Three, Guild Wars Two, World of Warcraft, Spaceteam, Rogue WiFi at Super Bowl - Ars, Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, Fez, Minecraft, The Castle Doctrine, Steam Greenlight, Spy Party, Kickstarter, Planetary Annihilation, FTL, Planescape Torment, God of War, Gears of War, Jerry Bruckheimer, How Early Reviews Hurt Sales - Ars, Kill Screen Daily, GameSpy, IGN, Why We Avoid Metacraitic - Ars, The Verge, Engadget, Gizmodo, Tom Bissell - Grantland, Catherine, Daring Fireball, Joystiq, Kotaku, 1up, I’m sorry, Marcus - Quarter to Three, Steam Mobile, Humble Indie Bundle, When TED Lost Control - HBR, EFF, Child’s Play, Gabe Newell Left 4 Dead Sale- Shack News, Kingdoms of Amalur, Stephen King, Chromehounds, G4 Channel, e-Sports, Call of Duty is Making Us Dumb - PAR, Curling, PS4 Video Sharing, Counterstrike, League of Legends, Letterpress, Anno 2070, Red Dead Redemption, Why I Played Bioshock on Easy - PAR, SLI Graphics.
Klei's Nels Anderson and Firaxis' Scott Lewis join Rob and Troy to talk about fog of war and hidden information in game design. They talk about Mark of the Ninja and how information-gathering becomes a key game phase, and how games like Civilization use fog of war as a way to keep the player focused on a small, manageable area at the start of the game. The group discuss other ways to represent information-gathering, touching on games like Wargame, XCOM, Panzer Corps, and even 2006's Chromehounds. Apologies for any audio issues. We lost Scott Lewis's audio track to a software glitch.
We talk about portables....a lot. Portable games, maybe we go a little crazy in-depth with some stuff, please forgive us we will explain less when we aren't talking about cult classic games we love. Other than that we talk about Contagion. R.I.P Chromehounds. Enjoy.
Digital Firefly, gk128 and FmLuder bring you Level 1 of ThreePlayerGame. GK and Firefly lament the loss of Chromehounds. FmLuder and Firefly discuss Lost. Everyone discusses some of the most anticipated games of 2010 and beyond. In the second segment we discuss upcoming games of 2010. Will Starcraft II come out in April? Will Halo Reach be more like Ghost Recon or Team Fortress? We almost reach two hours but decide to cut it short and wait until next week to discuss some upcoming movies of 2010. We also discuss the recent beta code give aways for Star Trek Online. Follow ThreePlayerGame on Twiitter for news of upcoming shows.
