Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Fez. We talk about its platforming and how it fits to taste, game style, and rule escalation. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: More cubes! Issues covered: platforming feelings and taste, inspirations and how they play out here, additional move set, floaty physics, a mental game with mostly generous platforming, a game that takes place in your head rather than in your fingers, seeking high highs, sloppiness and guiding the player, no longer seeing the whole world but only the tells, the pleasure of figuring things out, checking out the achievements, how many people get everything, the craft of the game, wanting to feel capable, finding a solution that was not the intended solution, dominated by the puzzle side, those moments where you give a big "no way," extending a simple idea and iterating on it for a fleshed-out game, iterating ideas, a chain of implication, not making the leaps of logic too large, ladders that line up and teach you how to think about the world, not knowing whether you can do a thing yet, not wanting to diminish the revelations, puzzles games Brett hasn't finished and why, editorial from the publisher and Key Performance Indicators, finding a tribe for your indie game, side games, smaller and more cohesive teams, a choose-your-own-email, having an experience, leaving endings open. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Hollow Knight, Indie Game: The Movie, Phil Fish, Nintendo, Mario (series), Little Big Planet, Guacamelee, Super Mario Galaxy, Demons's Souls, Dark Souls, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Tomb Raider (2013), The Matrix, Deep Thoughts/Jack Handey, MYST, Pierre de Fermat, Megaman, Resident Evil, The Witness, Braid, The Talos Principle, Obduction, Cyan Worlds, Super Meat Boy, Fallout, X-COM, mysterydip, Mass Effect, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Twin Peaks, Half-Life, While We're Young, Noah Baumbach, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia.  Next time: More Fez! Note: Amusingly, though I did not call out the actresses, Naomi Watts and Amanda Seyfried appear in While We're Young, and both also appeared in Twin Peaks: The Return Twitch: timlongojr Discord DevGameClub@gmail.com

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series of series on the independent games of the last couple of decades, starting with 2012's Fez. We set the game in its time, talk a bit about its precedents and the landscape of independent games in the middle of that console generation. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Single-digit cubes Issues covered: our real plan or lack thereof, early games, the indie revolution, the influences back and forth, the pressure of the space we're in, a highly visible indie, games from that year, sequels vs the different stuff in the indies, democratization of the market, the console cycle, always online fiasco, getting on the Steam store, opening console store fronts to independents, limitations, the broadband market and bandwidth costs, the publicity on the store, low cost of goods, continuing power of retail, a two dimensional puzzle game in a three dimensional world, charm, great music and MIDI with an unsettling feel, rotating the world, rebooting the game, achieving the effect without perspective, the Trixel engine, having a hard time getting it, trusting the game, having a new lens on a game, taking the time to infuse the whole experience, team sizes, telling a different story with an existing language, having fewer people to get on board, independent publishers and producers, influences, glitch aesthetics, map language, climbing on the sides of things, stopping time while the world rotates, how the editor might work, games from the past, CONFIG.SYS (dang it, could not remember), skipping over generations. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Will Wright, Indie Game: The Movie, Polytron, Phil Fish, Dishonored, Halo 4, AW American Nightmare, X-COM, Firaxis, Mass Effect 3, Forza Horizon, Far Cry (series), Counterstrike: Go, Assassin's Creed 3, Borderlands 2, Diablo III, Dragon's Dogma, Journey, The Walking Dead, Telltale Games, FTL, Spelunky, Papo y Yo, Bastion, Super Hexagon, Terry Cavanaugh, Supergiant, Hades, Transistor, UFO 50, Derek Yu, That Game Company, Sky, Sony, PlayStation, Microsoft, Steam, XBLA, Braid, Super Meat Boy, Nintendo, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Zelda (series), Super Mario (series), Metroid (series), Outer Wilds, The Sixth Sense (obliquely), Renaud Bedard, Trapdoor, Penny Arcade, blitworks, Tetris, Axiom Verge, Tron, Out of this World, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Super Mario 3D Land, Minecraft, Sam, Interstate '76, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Cheyenne joins Ben this week to talk about a word that gets a lot of bad press, but in reality, it is a necessity in most activities involving progress and self-improvement. After conversing about what games they are playing (and discovering Ben's Hogwarts House), they dive right in to deep end and commence with the festivities. Topics explored: the “Epic Fail” meme, Tom Platz, CrossFit acronyms, the invention of Post-It Notes, John Cleese's speeches and educational videos, corporate culture, points of failure in engineering, stories about successes and failures in the academic settings, the roguelike and roguelite labels, and looping game mechanics.  Games discussed this week are as follows—Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Infinity Nikki, Hogwarts Legacy, Uncle Chop's Rocket Shop, Papers Please, Plate Up, Baldur's Gate 3, Hades, Kenshi, Deathloop, Disco Elysium, Indigo Prophecy, Super Meat Boy, and Seaman. Light Table by Chris Granger Learnable Programming by Bret Victor When Lu says "It's The Line", they're referring to this thing they're working on called Seet (or "see it"), and you can sneak a peek at seet right heet. Paris Fashion Week absolutely struts, and so can you! The Canadian Tuxedo. As the representative of Canada, I can confirm that I own both a denim jacket and denim pants. If you see me at a conference wearing this combo, I will give you a hug. Jimmy runs a personal Lichess data lake. Hot Module Replacement is a good thing. Pygmalion has a lot of juicy silly bits, 'parently. Cuttle is awesome! It's a worthy successor to Apparatus. Toby Schachman, Forrest Oliphant, I think maybe a few other folks too? Crushing it. Oh, and don't miss Toby's episode of this very podcast! Recursive Drawing, another Toby Schachman joint. Screens in Screens in Screens, another Lu Wilson joint. Larry Tesler. Not a fan of modes. Lu writes about No Ideas on their blog, which is actually just a wiki, but it's actually a blog, but it's actually just a garden. When we mention Rich Hickey, we're referring to the talk Simple Made Easy Jacob Collier, ugh. Suffragettes, women advocating for their right to vote, absolutely had a principle. Not sure that we should be directly likening their struggle to what we do in tech. On the other hand, it's good to foster positive movements, to resist incel and other hateful ones. Instead of linking to e/ anything, I'm just gonna link to BLTC for reasons that only make sense to longtime listeners. Stop Writing Dead Programs by Jack Rusher. Jack Rusher? Jack Rusher! It's the fish one, the one with the fish. …Sorry, these aren't actually fish, or something, because they're just drawings. René Magritte is the creator behind La Trahison des Images, origin of "Ceci n'est pas une pipe". Or maybe it was Margit the Fell Omen? Magritte's Words and Images are lovely. Here's an English translation, though its worth taking a look at the original in context. Acousmatic Music Lu has made art with behaviour — various sands, and CellPond, say. Barnaby Dixon? Barnaby Dixon. Barnaby Dixon! Barnaby Dixon!! You can listen to part of Ivan's """Metronome""", if you want. Or you can listen to an early version of the song he's using this metronome to write. Or you can hear snippets of it in the Torn Leaf Zero video (especially the ending). But, like, you could also go make yourself lunch. I recommend mixing up a spicy peanut sauce for your roasted carrots. Shred a bit of cheese, tomato. Toast the bread. Pull the sausages right when the oil starts to spit. Put them straight into the compost. Look at the bottom of the compost bucket. What's down there? It's shiny. Why are you reading this? Why am I writing this? Why do we make thispodcast? Wintergatan — Marble Machine exists Oh, I forgot to add a link to Arroost earlier. You can also watch a pretty good video that is basically an Arroost tutorial, not much to it. There are also some nice examples of things people have made with Arroost. The Rain Room looks pretty cool. It's the exact inverse of how rain works in many video games. YOU MUST PLAY RAIN WORLD. Here's a beautiful demo of a microtonal guitar, and speaking of using complex machines to make music that would be "easier" to make with a computer, here's a microtonal guitar with mechanized frets that can change the tuning dynamically. This entire YT channel is gold. Shane Crowley wrote a lovely blog post about creating music with Arroost. blank.page is a fun experiment in writing with various frictions. Super Meat Boy (the successor to Meat Boy, a Flash game) and Celeste are great examples of communicating tacit knowledge through the design of a simulation. Newgrounds and eBaum's World and Homestar Runner were early examples of (arguably) computer-native media. Hey, here's this episode's requisite link to the T2 Tile Project and Robust-First Computing. I should probably just create a hard-coded section of the episode page template linking to T2, The Witness, and Jack Rusher. The pun-proof Ivan Sutherland made Sketchpad. Planner exists. The PlayStation 3 Cell processor was this weirdly parallel CPU that was a pain in the butt to program. The SpaceMouse Put all metal back into the ground. Join our Discord Community: https://discord.com/invite/aHjTSBz3jH Check us out on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@sasquatchbgames Welcome to The Indie Game Development podcast! Today, we're exploring the genius level design of Super Meat Boy. Ed McMillan, known for his quirky games like The Binding of Isaac, created a masterpiece with Super Meat Boy. Unlike Mario, this platformer keeps it simple with basic moves: walk, run, jump, and wall jump. But don't be fooled – it gets insanely challenging. Ed's level design is brilliant, introducing new mechanics and hazards at the perfect pace. From dodging saws to navigating disappearing blocks, each level builds upon the last, testing your skills in new ways. Super Meat Boy teaches players without holding their hand, making it a masterclass in game design. It proves that you don't need complex mechanics to make a great game – just solid gameplay and clever level design.

A Video Game Time Capsule: The Complete History of Video Games, presented by MRIXRT @reallycool

Between 2009 and 2010, the video game industry underwent monumental shifts. In 2009, as the world grappled with a recession, gaming conventions proliferated, transforming gaming from niche pastime to mainstream phenomenon. The rise of casual gaming, exemplified by the Wii's overwhelming success, signaled a demographic shift, pushing companies to reevaluate their design and marketing strategies. Yet, alongside triumphs came challenges, as evidenced by the Xbox 360's hardware issues. Controversies also emerged, like EA's "Project Ten Dollar" which aimed to curb used game sales but sparked debates about game value. Meanwhile, 2010 marked the indie game scene's further ascent, with initiatives like Humble Bundle and platforms like Kickstarter supporting indie developers. New gaming horizons were also unlocked with motion controls like Kinect and PlayStation Move. This period encapsulated the gaming world's rapid transformation, from the rudimentary games of the early 2000s to the technologically advanced, socially integrated, and diverse landscape of 2010. The industry faced both the excitement of evolution and the challenges of addressing the varied desires of an expanding gamer demographic.Featured Games:Halo 3: ODST, Halo Wars, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Demon's Souls, Street Fighter IV, Red Dead REdemption, Mass Effect 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Limbo, Super Meat Boy, StarCraft II: WIngs of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ (00:00) - Episode 9 (00:06) - 2009 (29:01) - 2010 Thanks to our monthly supporters FS Tabreez Siddique Mynx Mopman43 Ritsu William Kage Studio Devil Dallay_g Razu John H The Golden Bolt MykonosFan ErbBetaPatched Vornak Killer Space Serra Mr. Lindsay Autocharth History With Kayleigh Benjamin Steele Nick Makris minimme

Was ist so faszinierend an Super Meat Boy?

We relive the greatest crappy internet cartoons from the early days of the internet. Strongbad, Star Wars Gangsta Rap, GI Joe PSAs, and more. You know, the glory days of the internet. Also, Paul remembers listening to some bad music. We also talk about the fun, and challenges, of discovery in today's modern day of the internet. Nobody explains their biases, and algorithmic discovery trends back to the norm.Aqua Team Hunger Force sounds like a really bad show to Sean. This leads to a discussion of Super Meat Boy, which is good. Plus, other old games that are good to varying degrees.Paul explains the divergent sequences of Mario games. Warning: it is complicated. What does it have to do with Star Wars? The connection is dubious. Also, we discuss the quintessential vs the most interesting.

Then it's time to talk about Transformers: Devastation, Super Meat Boy and Uncharted before providing half-informed analysis of the Star Citizen debacle and talking about your ideal video-game dance partners.
