Online game design veteran Raph Koster recently posted a new piece about how he thinks about game design, which got us talking about the history of online multiplayer, so then we figured, why not talk about that subject in a (slightly) more comprehensive way on this podcast? So that's what we did this week, dipping into topics like pre-TCP/IP network gaming, the early video game consoles' various half-baked online solutions, how Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies were both way ahead of their time, how much the infrastructure has evolved for facilitating multiplayer -- and how expected it is as a feature these days -- and plenty more.Koster's new piece: https://www.raphkoster.com/2025/11/03/game-design-is-simple-actually/PC Gamer's Everquest history: https://www.pcgamer.com/breaking-the-internet-the-story-of-everquest-the-mmo-that-changed-everything/Dreamcast online functionality and Sega.net history (with links to similar pages for PS2, GameCube etc. at the bottom): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamcast_online_functionality Support the Pod! 25 years ago today, the PlayStation 2 launched in the US. I recount my lonely camping out at a local store that nobody knew had PS2's, only to get a PS2 that didn't work. Once Upon A Katamari is a new entry in my favorite game series, and reviewers love it but there's an aspect of it I'm not as much a fan of. Microsoft has told the Xbox division that they must make 30% profit margins, something that no game company has been able to do. This explains why Xbox has made the decisions they have made for the past year. Then we talk about how Microsoft has opted all users of the Xbox Game Bar on PC into a Microsoft Copilot feature that periodically takes screenshots of your gameplay and sends it to their AI for learning - even if it's a game you're developing and under NDA.

This week on The Free Cheese, what ever happened to Y2K? After ranking it our number one console a few years ago, we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the PlayStation 2 by sharing our favorite games, the best features of the console, and what its legacy is today.
Contraband was announced back in 2021. Since then, we've seen just about nothing from the game. No messaging beats, no trailers, and even the Xbox executives didn't yap about this one! After four years of development, this collaboration between Xbox and Avalanche has come to a close. Adding it to the list of canceled Xbox titles, this one feels different to Dependable Cog and Choco Matty. Part of it is apathy, but it's also a new angle from the previous shutdowns where we really don't know much about what was lost. It's a valuable lesson in why Xbox shouldn't announce things early. Beyond our headline, we get into Xbox's president offering her talents to Tyson Foods (?!), Halo coming to PlayStation, a legend leaving Xbox, and diving deep into Matty's recent interview with ex-BioWare vet, Mark Darrah. Director Fumeto Ueda has been hailed by many as somewhat of an auteur of the gaming landscape. A creative whose style embraces minimalist desolation. Known best for his work on Shadow of the Colossus, Ueda's directorial debut took place in 2001 with Ico, a boy-meets-girl action-adventure released for the PlayStation 2. Born with horns in a small village, Ico was seen as a great misfortune and was locked away in an eerie castle across the sea. Just as Ico settled in to his stony tomb, an earthquake strikes, freeing him and beginning the long journey to freedom. Along the way Ico meets Yorda, the daughter of the evil shadowy queen who rules over the land and the two work together to escape. While the premise was simple the game was considered by many to be a success, and has been cited by many prominent directors as an influence in their games. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Uncharted, Dark Souls, The Legend of Zelda, Metal Gear Solid 3, you name it, Ico as certainly left its mark on the world. But is it still fun to play today? On this episode, we discuss:Puzzle Solving.Ico often presents the player with simple diagetic puzzles that make use of the environment.Unlike many other games, it makes almost no attempt to guide the player. Is this too harsh, or is the lack of handholding refreshing in the moden era?Combat.Despite its claim to fame, Ico's combat has very little going for it.What exactly makes it so unsatisfying and could it be improved?Yorda. An enscort quest that lasts an entire game would surely raise eyebrows if released today.Did the team at Sony Computer Entertainment manage to bring Yorda to life?Or is she simply a frustrating Key for the player to drag about the gameworld? We answer these questions and many more on the 131st episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast!--Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen KOutro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to anotherIco OST: Michiru Oshima--Is Ico worth playing in the year 2025 and beyond? The year was 1985, Freddy Mercury was bringing down the house at Wembley, Rocky Balboa won the Cold War by defeating Ivan Drago, and the Nintendo Entertainment System was release in the United States. It took the country by storm on the overall clad back of an Italian plumber named Mario. Nintendo ruled the home video game market until 1989 when a new player joined the game. The Sega Genesis' step onto the scene wasn't a home run right away. Sega decided to bring in a legend of the toy industry, a man named Tom Kalinske. This guy had his hands all over your childhood (not in the bad way) . Flintstone Vitamins? He created them. Barbie? He's the reason she's around today. Matchbox Cars? Who amongst us hasn't smashed one with a hammer when they no longer rolled properly. Tom and his team decided the only way to fight Nintendo's death grip on the market was to appeal to an older more mature and rebellious audience, teenagers. Sega became MTV to Nintendo's Disney Channel. Their battle took place in the stores, at the conventions, and on your TV. It had everything, corporate sabotage, defection to the competition, Joey Lawrence, Japanese rent-by-the-hour hotels, and a Hedgehog with attitude who's still doing his thing today. It's debate time once again! This time, Teebs and KidPhoenix delve into the evolution of gaming consoles, focusing on the PlayStation 2 and its impact on the gaming landscape since the console's inception in 2000. The duo debates the strengths and weaknesses of various consoles, launch titles, and the franchises that emerged during the PS2 era, ultimately highlighting the significance of the PlayStation 2 in gaming history. On the other side of the coin (Teebs's coin), the merits of the Xbox 360 as a revolutionary console are compared to the PS2. What impact on gaming culture, online gaming, and its extensive library of games. The discussion culminates in a light-hearted debate about which console would be preferable on a deserted island, the PS2 or the Xbox 360. Send us a textWhat if the gaming industry's future lies in breaking down exclusivity barriers? We dive into this provocative question as we explore the recent breakup between Kojima Productions and Sony, leading to Death Stranding's expansion onto Xbox. This shift signifies a broader trend of AAA games seeking profitability through multi-platform releases, echoing the iPhone's pivotal departure from AT&T exclusivity. We celebrate the financial success of Black Myth: Wukong, a testament to how modest budgets can still yield staggering sales, challenging the traditional gaming distribution narrative. The console wars heat up as we examine Nintendo's rumored Switch 2 and its potential impact on the market. With features like backward compatibility and enhanced handheld play, this new console could be a game-changer for holiday shoppers. We also compare Nintendo's strategy to Xbox's robust backward compatibility, contemplating whether Nintendo's sales might eclipse the legendary PlayStation 2. Could a strategic price drop be Nintendo's secret weapon to claim the top spot?Fighting game enthusiasts, rejoice! Our discussion buzzes with excitement over potential gaming revivals and EVO announcements, from the anticipated return of Virtua Fighter to fantasies of a Marvel-DC crossover. We critique the missed opportunities of Jump Force and dream of a Transformers fighting game that pushes boundaries. We wrap up with a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Quincy Jones, celebrating his indelible mark on music and eagerly anticipating the launch of our YouTube channel.
